iPhone 3G is finally official, starts at $199

It's been a long wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack. Apple's taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around. Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they're also making sure it's available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps... and does it all for cheaper.

Nice, I'm interested to see some spec's on the internals. Flush headphone jack is a god send, it's my only complaint with my current model.

Oh, want to know how scratchy that plastic is?

Hit the jump fishy. There's a bunch of specs in the story.

"Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750"

"Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio."

"GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers. WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet."

"Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year. 8GB is available for $199, 16GB for $299 -- and the 16GB comes in white. Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th."

You wonder how they can justify adding 100$ more of a 16GB chip..

Oh, that stuff stays the same dude. Or else people would be really pissed that their iPhones don't play games as well as the new ones and whatnot.

I'm sure many people are already angry enough with 3G coming out a year after they bought theirs, instead of on launch lol. And for cheaper.

Yeah that's pretty much what I expected. Shame though ;)

Price thing and tech update doesn't bother me much, I bought one from the US at launch and well, I thought it was worth it then so meh... I'll flog it to a mate anyways and pick one of these up probably. Gullible friends ;)

The whole 3G doesn't interest me much either, I prefer to use free wifi than have my operator make a mockery of me.

And they need to grow up. Every other manufacturer releases new models all the time. Sometimes at the same price point, sometimes lower or higher. It's ridiculous that they can justify their purchase and then turn around and whine.

If you can jailbreak this baby I'm sold. I'll even renew my AT&T contract. Jailbreaking is the best thing to happen to the iPhone community. I need my homebrew apps. :)

4 - I'm confused about something
Ok, so Apple didn't really announce anything no one expected, but I'm confused about something and maybe someone can clear up.

During the keynote, Apple took a shot at ActiveSync software (that's push software for those unaware...and not a very good one either... in fact, it's the worst out there) by calling it ActiveStink and talking about their 'MobileMe' thing. Well, after visiting the official Apple Store page, it clearly says "ActiveSync". So, MobileME is just a rebrand of ActiveSync? Sort of like VZ Navigator and AT&T Navigator is just a rebrand of Telenav software. I thought this was pretty funny because they clearly expressed their dislike in the software, but it's what they are using.

Update

I got a disagree for asking a question. MAC NINJA ALERT!

MobileMe or whatever includes an ActiveSync conduit. That's why it's mentioned. But no, just looking at it, it's not even in the same realm as ActiveSync.

This is really about using Cloud-type infrastructure to introduce all Windows users to native Mac apps. The sync is fab and makes sense but it's really secondary to that.

6 - GAY GAY GAY
And I mean Gay as in "stupid", not "BOY ON BOY" action.
This isnt gaming news, its an abonmination.
Have you guys seen the Blackberry Thunder or Bold?
Not only are they FASTER, LIGHTER, AND MORE POWERFUL----but you dont have to sit around like a complete douchebag, talking to other people about your Iphone and how cool it is every second of every day.
Plus, Blackberries(even the curve series) are very open sourced, and most of the apps you find are total free to download and use.

Tired of hearing about Apple. *pukes*

With Verizon buying Alltel and Tmobile FINALLY launching a 3G network, At&T is gonna need alot more than a 3G iphone to save their a$$es.

SIDENOTE: blackberries can now use utorrent.

See that "mobile" tab up there ^^. Oh and the iphone/itouch are soon to be as relevant to gaming as both the DS and PSP.

6.2 - Thankyou for correcting me.
Sorry, forgot about that "mobile" tab.

Anyway, I dont know if it will be anything close to as great as the DS, especially with all the great DS games out there. I can see it beating out a PSP(3g web browsing vs wifi, 3g Voice network vs. wifi-based skype, ect) but that wouldnt be the case if sony would get focused on making the PSP a gaming handheld FIRST.

Just so many things out there that beat out this Iphone, you just never really see them b/c of the hype the iphone gets.

UPDATE: RAN OUT OF BUBBLES, LOL, if it wants to be as "Relevant" as either of those two---it better be as "GOOD" as them. Otherwise why bother?

Because gaming is a part of the iphone's functions, not it's main market.

Just like the DS is trying to be relevant to people besides gamers by adding software that's not gaming related, but there's no way they're going to outdo most other platforms. Apple's not in it to win the mobile gaming market. They're in it to add enough useful and sometimes fun software to their device so that people will have more reasons to buy it.

Yeah, while I agree that Apple products, especially the iPhone are way to overhyped. And many people don't even know why their hyping it lol.

It's not really anything new or innovative.. Sure first phone in USA with a full touch screen instead of a combination of touch and a keypad.

Apple does the same thing they do with Mac's. They over price it just because it looks good. Instead of pricing it based on the core hardware specs of it.

It should come in 32,64GB models.. 8GB and even 16GB is hard to get around on these days.

But you can't deny that they make a sexy product :P. And it is one of the top phones in USA, specs and design wise.

But I'm personally waiting to see what PMP's/Phones/whatever will be made from Nvidia's Tegra platform. Cause that thing is hella powerfull and efficient.

(Waits for onslaught of disagrees from people who only read the first few lines of my comment.)

Well, innovation is pretty rare anywhere in the industry these days.

I'd say the best thing that the iphone has done has to do with interfaces.

Lets face it, cell phone interfaces have sucked. Even just for basic calling, but anything else has been horrible for years. Now, it has improved in the last few years, still terrible, but gradually has gotten better. But Apple really made a lot of phone companies rethink their UI and that can't be a bad thing. I've seen vast improvements in interface since the iphone launch and that's good for everyone. Even if you don't like the iphone's interface... at least now you have options.

I'd rather have the iphone be popular than what we had a few years ago with the razr. That was a pretty phone, but the interface was probably as bad as it gets. I mean, 10 keypresses to turn on bluetooth? I eventually streamlined things with the shortcuts menu, but a lot of providers actually turned that menu off.

I prefer the HTC Diamond rather than the iPhone anyways. Until the iPhone gets off of that crappy AT&T wireless company and is able to be used on any phone market I will continue to NOT particularly care about any phone apparatus that Apple puts out.

I maybe completely off target here as I'm UK, but cant you guys use a jail broken iphone on any network?

Here you can only get them with o2, but after being jail broken they work on any.

7.2 - Buy the SDK
Then you can make sure its jailbroken and App-friendly.
Maybe even take a crack at making some of your own apps?
What service do you have?
