The Lies We Tell : BioShock's Exclusivity

Lida reports:

''The cat is now out of the bag, people finally know that BioShock is coming to PS3, after it was 'confirmed' not to.

Well, I worked on the PS3 version, I was even lead programmer for the PS3 SKU at one point, but then there were a lot of lead programmers that worked on the PS3 version, but that's a sordid tale for another post. Today's post is about one of the lies of the games industry, the exclusivity deal.''

1.3 - that was a REALLY good article
this is what i learned:

" all high profile games from 3rd party publishers are planned from the beginning to be multi-platform" because of marketing money can be spent in on one big campaign.

"cost of developing for multiple platforms can easily be recouped" because both of the consoles have good install base.

"Once you’ve created a good code base for PS3, it is easy to turn that into a well running 360 version." sort of knew this.

Microsoft paid for the exclusive deals. Knew this also.

exclusive because of "unsureness about the success of BioShock" New developers will look for money from microsoft.

Good read, we've been seeing this happen for a while but it's good to have some meaning behind this kind of stuff. It's obvious once the install base gets higher devs would start to show more love for the ps3.

1.5 - My take on this read
f everyone of Microsoft's third party titles are "timed"exclusives, then it tells me one thing: I should only keep a PS3. Why?

If every title except for 3 Microsoft studios (rare/lionhead/silicon?) will all be available on the PS3, why would I buy the console?

I know I can expect about 16 additional 1st party exclusive titles coming from Sony because they have so many first party studios. Also it means that the 3 titles I'm missing out on, I can get for PC.

To me this article boils down my decision as a consumer to who has the most "TRUE" exclusive titles this gen. Sounds like it will be Sony.

Does that make sense?

1.8 - Silicon (Knights) is NOT a first-party studio for Microsoft
In fact, Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack has said they're working on undisclosed PS3 title(s).

Microsoft's first-party studios are: Rare, Lionhead, Ensemble. They make good games, but NOT "AAA" titles. The only Microsoft's first-party studio that made "AAA" games was Bungie (which is no longer a first-party studio.)

your opening words were correct: "it really depends on what exclusives you like".
calling something "AAA" means nothing if you don't like the game. for ex. many people consider halo(x360) or final fantasy(ps3) to be AAA. but, if you don't like one of these, why would you buy the system(or the game).
i buy ps because of of exclusive titles like ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, socom, FF, GOW, KZ, resistance, MGS, twisted metal,(hopefully more come out!) uncharted....and what you think doesn't mean anything to me. just like you can like halo and what i think shouldn't matter to you. buy the system for what games YOU like that aren't on other systems, not what you are being told you should be playing.

gaming is nearly as bad as most governments now. We only know what they want us to know and by the time we find out the truth it doesn't matter any more. This is why I don't follow politics and don't care for gaming reviews or trust "most" gaming information. I believe what I see when I have game and gaming products in hand to judge for myself.

1.13 - EPIC were honest about Unreal Tournament being a timed exclusive. 2K Boston & Microsoft shouldn't lie
I understand the business of business, a timed exclusive makes sense for 2k Boston and promoting BioShock for the Xbox 360. However there are other developers who make deals for timed exclusives and are open about it. EG. EPIC had a timed exclusive with Sony for Unreal Tournament. THEY DIDN'T LIE and say it was an exclusive. They let everyone know it was timed.

Im less inclined to trust Microsoft or 2k Boston. Lying to customers isn't the way to go.

1.15 - corrections
"1.14 - SONY started the PS1 with this same method.........
Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil: just to name a few. So you SONY only guys can just chill."

mortal kombat - when MK was released, the playstation did not exist. the first MK titles were on the genesis and super nintendo respectively. the ps1 did not receive a version of MK until ultimate MK III came out, well after the release of umk3 on 16 bit consoles.

final fantasy - final fantasy was originally slated to be a nintendo game. when nintendo eschewed the cd format, square had to take the project elsewhere since they could only fit the FMV-filled game on a cd based format.

tomb raider - tomb raider was released for the sega saturn first.

resident evil - the game was released for the ps1 and the saturn version was released very shortly after. given the known difficulty in developing for the saturn, the saturn version would have had to be in development at the same time as the ps1 version.

2.3 - Bioshock 2 timed exclusive?
At the most.

Depends on if Microsoft can get some value from what they pay.

My guess is that Microsoft won't pay for a timed exclusive as the secrets out that is game is now multiplatform.

Bioshock just isn't a valued exclusive as Halo or Gears are.

Microsoft's likely purchased some exclusive DLC instead. lol.

Now we all know. Maybe gears will come to PS3 someday. A 3 or 4 year timed exclusive. I'd still buy it.
It does make good business sense. And now PS3 owners get some extras.

True but its all about the deal. Thats what this article explained. I am sure Sony paid Konami very very well to have exclusive rights to MGS4. I am sure MS did the same for Gears. To see either one of these go multiplatform this generation would truly be shocking.

True, but they are using SPE in the ps3. It's kinda hard to transfer if did it that way.

I'be fine with sharing 3rd party titles, but then it would come to first party developers. Which sony would own.

3.4 - Gears is over-rated
FPS developers just need to exaggerate the action, make larger than life characters and make them really Gung Ho....and you have yourself another Gears.

Damn, had Insomniac done this with Resistance, that game could have gone down as one of the greatest shooters ever.

So having Gears 3+ on the Ps3 would be great but not necessary. Just copy and improve developers.

4.4 - i agree with the article
thats usually what happens, but really their is so many more people who would buy the game if it released same time, timed delays are f'in retarded, the games long over due, graphics have improved since the delay, so theres no point in doing multi-platform after the fact, espically more than a year apart... The game at that point is old and has to be made the same, cause then people would complain about buying it again... additionally less people will be aware that its on the ps3/360 thinking its exclusive to one...And then the fanboys rip it apart cause it "didn't sell good" on the console a year later...I agree with first party game, like mario and zelda for nintendo and god of war for sony, i can't think of any 360 first party games, i would think Halo, but thats bungie not MS...anyways it don;t matter....I personally would like to see all games go multi-platform, and let consumers decide what they want to play it on... I really despise devs who reach for the biggest wallet like Namco, which almost every games has gone to 360 exclusive...

I agree. I have nothing against 360. I just can't afford to buy that many games. I bought Xbox 1 a year and a half ago. I stopped playing PS2 except for God of War 2. I bought Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Halo, Doom 3 and a ton of other stuff. It worked out good. I played the heck out of it. So that is my plan again. Plus there are just to many good PS3 exclusive's coming down the line that are must buys for me.

Yes, multi-console is the way to go. I have PS3 and 360.
Now I just want to see the 360 have free online play. Then I have a reason to turn my 360 on.

I've been playing a lot of online games lately and they are all on the PS3 because I never paid the $50 a year to play the 360 online.

Microsoft really needs to fix this mess because they will be left in the dust once the PS3 has in game chat and in game music. I really hope Sony doesn't decide to go the way of Microsoft and start to charge for online.

Time will tell.

Lol. With all the bad press, would a multiplatform shift help it at all? I mean, the general consensus is that Haze is mediocre. Much like Blacksite which came out on the PS3 after a delay, no one bought it because of all the bad press when the 360 version hit months earlier.

Well yeah it would help. It would be really easy to make a 360 port. Had it been the other way around it would be a much more difficult question. Haze will come to the 360 and with some new "bells and whistles" to try to sell more copies.

9.3 - but they can't add bells and whisles
Haze om ps3 is mediocre...great that fine
if Ubi wanted to port it to 360, im all for it, but if they add new things and make the game great on 360...don;t think of achievements...but gameplay wise, whether single or multi
they would have to release that to the ps3 consumers cause people who bought it for ps3 would be pissed off (i know i would be) if the 360 version had features that the ps3 didn't.... a patch would be easy, but just saying if they didn't
Shut this user up Let user speak

9.5 - its fine if they try to hype it up
but if i owned it on ps3 and the 360 got the game later on and was better graphically and the what not, i would be pissed... I was disappointed about GTA4 with the 360 exclusivity, but after playing the game, im kinda glad, it didn't live up to the GTA i was expecting..but theirs still gonna be GTA 4 Vice City and San Andreas type expansions on both consoles, 360 just gets an additional story or two...maybe different cities and whatnot...we'll have to wait as everyone is still unclear on what it is..

10 - multi platform
I think the only way to get the best out of a game is to develop it for only one system and take advantage of that systems unique features. Multiplatform dilutes the overall quality in the name of equality. Sure there will be less games available this way, but it's better to have quality than quantity IMO.
