More Capcom Wii Support? Okami Selling Less

Capcom Europe recently dropped a small hint of more Wii support to be announced in June.

Whilst discussing sales for Okami on Wii, Capcom's Christian Svensson has revealed that the game has sold less than the PS2 version at this stage of release.

I know that the Wii is the leader in console sales in probably will win this generation, but it is only a matter of time till some of these developers that are optioning for the cheaper console to develop for with the biggest install base realize that there games do not sell on the Wii. Now i have a Wii and I will pick up any game that looks fun, but in all honesty the majority of the people will never get anything else other than Wii sports or Nintendo first party games. Developers are bound to realize this soon and I imagine that a couple years done the road there will be less and less third party support.

I have to agree. The sales of WII have been phenomenal, but 3rd party games are not flying off the shelves. I
think Capcom will seriously regret putting so much dev effort into the WII as a platform and this will be reflected in their business results. If they concentrated on the other 'tech heavier' platforms, they would likely sell more actual units of software and be a profitable company.

I hope it doesn't affect them too badly in the long run, or that they prove us wrong and make a mint. I've always enjoyed seeing capcom products through the years and would hope they are always around and making good business!

Summary: Other than in Japan, 3rd-party Wii sales are comparable and have even outperformed 1st-party Wii sales over some half-year periods since its release.

EDIT: lol not really sure how someone can disagree w/ actual data...

have u seen the 3rd party releases that are out there for the wii? They are bad or ps2 ports u know....

Resident Evil 4 did good sold over 1 mill i think even when that is a port. So if the developers just makes an effort and a little quality they will sell games. simple as that

@ ItsDubC - thank you for link. There are some interesting statistics.

But I think you need to examine them further. There are a great number of third party titles available and not nearly so many first party titles. 50% (or 60%) of software sales for third parties looks like a decent haul until you split that up among the number of titles available! Similarly, 50% for Nintendo's first party titles shows how much of the pie each individual title has when you consider there's considerably fewer first party than third.

Of course theres a good reason for this - Nintendo have the quality and the mascots and IP's that people want to buy into, but I think in the final analysis its hard to point to any specific WII third party title thats bucked the trend - I believe Res Evil4 is the best at a million which is pretty poor for the install base size IMHO.

2 - I'm no fan of the Wii but did Capcom really expect a straight port
of a 2 year old game to sell better then the original? I mean the game is great but this has to fall into the "duh" category.

sidar is completely right here. The game didn't sell on PS2 either.

Also, Okami is a superb game and even after 10 years is would still be worth buying IMO.

I don't know why everyone actively denies the quality of the 3rd party Wii games. It's like they just don't want to put forth the knowledge that the Wii can sell games if they are good.

So far all of Capcom games have done great on the Wii. This one didn't do well on the PS2 even and it was promoted more so on that system so why would the Wii be any different. Shame yes but come on people use your noggin

3.1 - well
If the Wii commercials aren't made by Nintendo, people won't buy it. Also, "Okami" sounds foreign to most U.S. potential buyers. That means it's terrible to them.

The game was INCREDIBLE! It just needed the support of Nintendo.

Also, Resident Evil 4 didn't sell well on the Wii either. It's just not in the target market.

It would be tough to predict how games would sell on the Wii if I was a publisher. With the PS360 at least you know the customer base alot better, but with the casual crowd, once you move out of that mini-game sweet spot (and aren't named Nintendo) you never know how your game will sell.

Okami is a great title, but many people didn't like it, it requires some refined taste for this kind of games, is my fav of my PS2 game list and now it's a rare because not many originals exists

Why do I always get the feeling that only me and 10 other people bought Okami when it originally came out 2 years ago. Which is a shame because it's a great game.

Its too bad Okami did not sell well I missed it the first time and did not want to miss it again so I picked it up and really do enjoy it. I think if Capcom would have put more advertisement behind Okami it could have helped. Plus if Capcom said things like if you like Zelda you would like this too it would also help because you would have got people that like Zelda to buy this game.

I agree...

However, I hate when people compare a masterpiece like Okami to a crappy series like Zelda. I'm sorry, but Zelda is just not fun at all...and the storyline is weak and cheesy...

It's just a very overrated series.

Wii is just not the choice system for 3rd party games. Everyone assumes that because its selling at triple the rate of the other 2 systems, that it will equal success for 3rd parties. Its just not true because of the market the Wii is targetted at. Its for non-gamers. Sure a few gamers buy the Wii, but most have a 360/PS3. This generation is different than all the others. Every other generation, each machine was competing for the same market, the core gamer. I would go so far to say that even if the Wii had a 100m install base, while the PS3 had only a 40m install base, a game like FF14 if released for both systems, would sell better on the PS3. The Wii software totals on VGchartz every week are only because of the amazing 1st party sales. I keep telling everyone that Wii will sustain itself just as the Gamecube did. With 1st party games. Don't expect to see Final Fantasy 14 on the Wii...

" while the PS3 had only a 40m install base, a game like FF14 if released for both systems, would sell better on the PS3."

Because FF!13! is actually meant for a specific audience, people who are familiar with FF will buy it( or not if they didnt like it).

So much of that is complete BS that a trip to the same site you mention can prove how wrong you are. Guitar Hero 3 Wii outsold all other versions of the game, and that was with a six week recall due to mono sound.Half of the million sellers on Wii are 3rd party.True there are none in the top 5, but Nintendo was working on their Wii games a lot longer than most have. You do know that the Wii has a higher attach rate then PS3 right? That most months it leads in software sales with decent 3rd party game sales. Let me ask you this though. How many of those games would you buy on PS3? You want Okami PS3? you want a port of RE4, My Sims, Carnival games, Hannah Montana? If you dont want them why should Wii owners? Wii's 3rd party support far exceeds what the GC had.JUst look at the amount of recent exlusives announced for Wii as proof. It will have more 3rd party games on it in its first 2 years then the GC managed in 4. BTW at one point FF was thought by many to be a Nintendo game much the same way you feel it is a Sony game. The attachment you feel means nothing to them. If they felt they could get more sales by putting the original FF line back on Wii, they would. Just look at Dragon Quest 9. A game that has had a similar life to FF. Started on Nes, went to PS, yet now its on the DS..I really dont think it is as improbable as some think.

GOTCHA!!!

if thats the reason! then the PS2 owners must have thought the same!
The game didn't sell well on the Ps2 either!

HA Ha HA ! NOOB !

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Edit: Voice of reason has a good point.
PS2 had at least 100m users, so in theory Okami sold as poorly(even worse?) as it did on the Wii(25m users).

Ready At Dawn did the port. (They did Daxter and GOW:Chains of Olympus.)

You also have to look at the number of consoles. PS2 had at least 100m sold when Okami came out. Wii is just at 25m. Capcom is really pissing me off as a Wii owner. I will not buy another port of a PS2 game. Capcom owns the rights to Okami. They are the ones responsible for the port regardless of who actually did the programming.

Some gamers don't like last-gen ports for current-gen systems....
Wii owners may own a ps2
Okami is more "hardcore" in a sense....

Various reasons for it not selling.

I got it, loved it & want some more ORIGINAL Capcom games or at least not a last-gen port.

19 - Ok here is a test.
Make a GTA for the Wii not a port yet a new one and then lets see what happens. You will not get any new sales if you make a port unless it uses the Wii controls in an incredible way like res evil Wii make. All I know is GTA sold really really well on the PS2 back then I'm wondering What would happen with GTA on the Wii? I mean right now every one is putting their second rate games on the system, well not every one since there are some games to play not made by nintendo. Better yet how about putting quake 3 on there hell it still plays better than most shooters out right now(my opinion so don't melt down OK).
