Wii outsells all non-Nintendo systems combined in April

GamePro writes: Despite the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360 and PS3, the Nintendo Wii again managed to trample the competition in April U.S. video game sales. According to NPD data released today.

Personally, as a Wii-launch buyer, the novelty that is the Wii wore off after about a month...namely around Christmas, when Santa started rolling the goods for my much-more-adored PS3.

Following that, it was used on occasion as a quite-capable web-browser and weather-forecaster.

Now it does nothing more than sit atop the big-screen collecting dust (but thanks to it's white outer casing, you'd never know it.) ;)

Here's the strange thing: Despite the fact that I have no intention to start waving that Wiimote any time soon, (Rayman Raving Rabbids was the last title I bought...not too far after launch(!)), I just can't get myself to sell it, nor do I have any regrets for having purchased it.

Maybe it's just too darn cute.

And that is the mysticism of Nintendo to which I have personally fallen victim to.

Supernatural voodoo, I say!

So am I happy with it? Hell no!

That said: Nor do I possess any any bitterness or resentment towards the Little Box that Could. You know, sort of that that numb, lifeless feeling a unwilling spouse eventually succumbs to following an initially-resentful and morbid arranged marriage.

5 - Could it be that the
HD/Hardcore gaming market is saturated? I have a feeling May will see a rise in hardware for both the 360 and the PS3 but, if it doesn't then I think it's safe to say Sony and MS need to do something fast. The stance of, "the Wii is not in direct competition with our HD systems" is starting to sound rather weak.

Both MS and Sony need to get their consoles down to price points that your average Joe will want to buy it at. 250$ please.

this is void......lets look at the Wii compared to May's numbers. The impact of GTA sells dont show til May's numbers are revealed....but still the Wii is a monster.....i still want one for Brawl.

12.1 - That's the point though
Casuals are dominating the market. If Sony and MS are stating that they're not in competition with the Wii for the casuals, and sales were this poor, then isn't it safe to say that the hardcore market is becoming more saturated? I mean seriously ... the game sold 5 million in 5 days and almost nothing on the hardware front. I know May will play a factor but, how huge? What if by the time Sony and MS get down to casual price ranges, the Wii will have already killed them? Will staying at these higher price points be the major factor of the Wii's continued dominance? Could it be that sales were actually worse and that the consoles were boosted? What if the Wii is actually stealing some of the hardcores as well?

Honestly ... I'm just tossing out ideas right now but, If I were Sony and MS, I would be more than a little taken aback by this. Cause right now Nintendo has a cheaper package thats a little different and is being marketed extremely well.

13 - Have nothing against the Wii or the people that buy it,
I just worry that the Wii is far more beneficial to Nintendo than the gaming industry. Certainly the Wii has a lot of pontential financially, I hope other can reap some of that outside of Nintendo.

15 - The wii is great
And how can people say it collects dust when Smash bros is out and Guitar Hero, and okami, and Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3, and Zack & Wiki, and Bloom Blocks and wii ware, and the virtual console, and great games coming out this fall and next year. Mad World (this game is bad a$$) Tales of Symphonia 2 (the sequel to the gamecube's best RPG) Skyes of Arcadia 2 (the sequel to the dreamcast's best RPG) and lastly Kid Icaris Wii (do I have to say anyhthing here)

17 - I MIGHT buy one
If I could find one. But i'm not going to search the whole f*ing world to try to get it.
After almost two years, I should be able to walk into any store and buy it off the shelf. But I can't.
And eveyone I know who owns one says they played it a few times after they got it and now it just sits there collecting dust.

Lame.

i love my wii.. there were times it sat there collecting dust.. but that was after launch cause i had no games to buy on it. Now i have like 15 games and i play it quite frequently. and i am a HARDCORE gamer.. i owned the NES, SNES, PSX, N64, GC and for a bit the PS2 but thats cause i borrowed it from a friend. I want a 360 or PS3 but the price is a lil steep for me and i am worried about the RROD.. i did have a friend selling the 360 for 300 but it was the one without the harddrive so i didn't want it.

The main reason i bought the WII was price.. i still play a lot of PC games.. i mean A LOT. but i like being able to plop down on my bed and play some wii.

sometimes i wish i had less agmes cause i'm not sure what to play

19 - With all the people saying their Wiis are collecting dust.
Who are buying all the games. It is outselling both HD consoles games wise since forever and only last month did the 360 outsell it due to GTA 4. So maybe people are buying the games before they get a Wii so that they will have games when they buy a Wii.

21 - I predicted this long time ago
People thought I was crazy when I predicted Wii's long term success even before it came out. The main argument against my prediction was that it was too underpowered compared to PS3 and X360 to have long legs, but the problem in the argument is that processing power was never intended to be the selling point for Wii. It's all about innovative software, just like with DS, and the software sales nowadays are huge for the Wii. Wii Music is going to be the next Wii phenomenon after Wii Fit.

For me the Wii is too overpriced right now though, and I don't intend buying any other new console either before RE5 or perhaps God of War come out.
