Microsoft: Oops, We Forgot About The Wii In Worldwide Sales

Microsoft totally won the race to 10 million in the U.S. That's for damn sure. But worldwide? They're not exactly the leader in the "current-generation console" race, at least not if you include the Wii as a "current-generation console." They may have an impressive Xbox Live user base, but 19 million Xbox 360s sold does not a current gen leader make.

1.3 - Not really
it just means MS looks at it more or less like a horse race between Sony and themselves. Sort of the "who's d!ck is bigger" type of thing i guess.

MS said "we reached 10 Million" first in the USA.

From their press release:

"REDMOND, Wash., May 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Microsoft Corp. today announced that the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system has sold over 10 million units in the U.S., making it the first current-generation gaming console to break the 10 million mark in the U.S. The U.S. install base contributes to global sales of over 19 million, more than any other current-generation console."

World-wide sales are relevant, but that doesnt change the fact Xbox 360 reached 10M first.

Kotaku is really stretching for traffic with this garbage.

That sounds like they are saying their global sales are more than everyone else...

Yeah, MS doesn't like to talk about the Wii. I don't really count it either, but whatever. Pretty soon they'll be saying, "We have the highest install base of any next-gen console released in 2005."

"We have the highest install base of any next-gen console with 'x' in the title."

jokes aside. The wii is not next gen so ill agree with MS for once

The point isn't if it's next gen. The point is when it came out, the point is that it sells.
They have made something that sells this gen, and it does!
M$ are talking bull, just like they often do...

I dont count the Wii as competition. It doesn offer anyway close to what the other two offer and I dont care what its sales are. Coke sells more than Chateu Le Teur is doesnt mean its a better drink.

but yeah bathyj's point is true. Making a car that can go fast doesn't make it a 'sports car'. ps3,360 = Sports cars, wii = car that can go fast.

Like I say, the Wii is to the 360/PS3 is like McDonald's is to Ruth's Chris. McD's might sell more, and some adults may like it, but it's for kids. Give me a ruth's chris or any USDA Prime ribeye anyday!

So Microsoft talks about sales in the U.S.A & Kotaku mentions something else & changes the topic & is blowing this out of proportion. They must be losing visitors so they come up with these very over exaggerated news stories. Kotaku should merge with News 4 Gamers. It would be the perfect match

11 - microsoft just likes to spew and cover up FACTS with HALF TRUTHS.
what happend to WII60?microsoft pushed that as well as 360 fans.

answer:once they saw they were getting outsold, they disregarded that idea as sony still outsold them in 2007.the PLOY didn't work.and nintendo outsold them worldwide.

microsoft is not the leader.they have no leading console, they claim leadership for online when the mass market doesn't see online gaming or even care for online gaming.and no part of the 360 platform has anything innovative that they can claim as leading like the wiimote or bluray.

you have a marching band, and as the first person in front carries the flag forward, the masses of musicians are marching in a different direction.everyone wants to play something else and go in another direction.if they were behind the flag holder, then you can call him the leader.

microsoft is the flag holder.microsoft started out the gate first.but the masses are going in a different direction.by trying to beat sony by being first, they left the door open to get their @sses kicked by nintendo.

watch, when microsoft enters next gen "first" with 720 2 years from now,,watch how they claim they won the console war by spitting out USELESS NUMBERS:

we won the harcore game attachment rates
we won by having more achievements unlocked
we won by having more online gamers
we won by having more cross game invites

they'll never claim they sold the most consoles.that would be a LIE.but if you spew "half truths",it would make it seem like they won something.but in reality, they got outsold by nintendo and sony in the console race.because counting only one country instead of ALL countries is a half truth as well.when consoles are sold "globally."and america is not the whole world.

megaton..................bomb s bursting in air....gave truth through the night..........that our flag was still there.........

12 - Wow! what a poor attempt
MS said "10 million US", they never said anything about 10 million "worldwide". I don't even know what this is, spin I guess, or a poor attempt at damage control. Wont be long now till MS has 10 million US and 10 mill everwhere else. They are the leader in the US, and thats what the other article was talking about.

15 - Wait a minute...
I thought that MS was still holding onto the "we have sold more software" argument... What? Now they have to ignor the competition to get better PR sales reports out? So what is it? Do they simply have to stick their head in the sand and say "we're number one"?

The Wii is in a different league than the PS3 and the 360. The Wii is in the Pee Wee league with the Leap Frog Leapster and all of those "gaming" toys.

22 - really sad
by MS and thier followers. Technically Wii, PS3 and 360 are current gen consoles. No matter how you slice it, Nintendo is king this gen. Any attempt to belittle thier comeback in the industry is just childish and ignorant. Another sad ploy by MS.
