Xbox 360 to have a "long run" says Microsoft

Steve Wysowski from XboxFocus.com writes:

"Speaking at the Microsoft spring media summit in San Francisco, Kim Shane, Microsoft Game Studios' head honco, said it was the plan from the beginning that the 360 would have a "long tail" (we can only assume that means "long lifespan" in English)."

Microsoft simply doesn't have the exclusive first party studio lineup for people to continue buying 360s much longer. And it is years too late to start to build up a strong first party array for Microsoft.

The 360 hardware STILL isn't profitable with the online charges and other services keeping the division out of the red. And Microsoft has given no timeline for when they think they will start to break even on the 360 hardware according the most recent conference call.

A gimped smaller than last gen disc format
The smallest first party developer lineup by a huge margin compared to Nintendo and Sony
Approaching three years on the market and they still can't even break even on the hardware costs
RRoD still plagues the system
7 billion dollars in losses racked up since the start of the Xbox project

That's not a viable long term business model in the console market. Microsoft really needs to just drop their half-assed attempts at console hardware and focus on PC gaming. Continue to bring the good parts of the Xbox to Vista and put all this money they are wasting on their futile attempts in the console market to making PC gaming better.

Saugue king-
What are you talking about? MS has reduced the price of the 360 by $50 in two and a half years. Do you really think they aren't turning a profit on the hardware? Remember the 3600 wast costing MS less than 100.00 per console sold at luanch! Do you think that wih the price of the hardware only being reduced 50.00 in 200 years that MS isn't making a profit? Look at the Elite at 450.00 Ms is making close to 150.00 per console sold. HDD is about anoher 100 dollars on HDD sold.
Next time sop bing a d*ckridding fanboy and talk about crap you know.

They have forseen what is coming and they are trying to stem the blood flow. Why? Simple.

They already know what tomorrow's NPD figures are going to say. Bad news for the 360.

Besides that whole Xbox lifespan discussion by them is a bunch of tripe. They said the same thing about the first Xbox and look how that was forgotten.

And Kevincox it is called an act of the desperate. MS still has debts from the first Xbox. They also coupghed up a billion dollars to extend the warranties to 3 years on the 360 and that wasn't enough cash. You need to read more. Just because a company cuts prices doesn't mean they are making a profit.

I wonder if they are going to extend the 3 year warranty. Currently the hardware failure rate is still not yet acceptable.

@ kevoncox and bladestar Microsoft has reported they have positive revenue but we all know that little revenue they made does not cover the losses they have accumuated. And how can you not know what the losses the xbox 1 amounted because that has been in the news before. It's known the xbox 1 put the MS gaming division to $4 billion in debt. The 360 has been profitable for 2 quarters the quarter before Halo 3 and the quarter of Halo 3, but as I said before that does not cover the losses such as paying Take 2, xbox 1 debts, and faulty hardware costs. So in short 360 nor the xbox brand is profitable. Stop trying to spin things.

2 - Microsoft needs more exclusive, diversified IPs
Just Halo and Gears of War are not going to cut it.

Honestly, I think Shane Kim has seriously mismanaged the Xbox IP business. He has made Xbox 360 overly dependent on 3rd-party developers and multiplatform games.

I agree with you, but it kinda looks like Xbox is doing exactly that with this years line up. Too Human and Fable for example.

2.2 - Too Human won't be a hit
Too much damage has already been done on that title. And I've looked at all the videos. Too Human really does NOT look good.

Yeah, Fable 2, I give you that much. But seriously, Microsoft should have TWICE as many titles than they have now for this year. For every big IP Sony planned for the PS3 this year, (like MGS4 and Little Big Planet,) Microsoft should have TWO hot IPs to counter it.

Microsoft has just been very stingy and conservative on the money it spends on creating and acquiring IPs, and that's a recipe for losing in this generation.

Microsoft could afford to drop $45 billion to buy Yahoo. Surely it can drop a couple billions to give its gamers some more hot new IPs and totally decimate the PS3.

2.3 - @ the round peg
let me say that you have no idea how investment works
dropping 2 billion buying exclusives left and right doesn't mean that they will recoup the money spent , without mentioning that this approach is counter productive and could easily ruin innovation and discourage new IPs

The 360 is a great machine with a great lineup of games. I own neither Gears of War nor Halo and I still have many great games to play. I think that Microsoft Game Studios has done a great job of releasing great games since the console released.

It's too early to count anyone out yet.

2009 will be the year MS introduces a new console mostly likely, im guessing that Nintendo will milk the Wii's popularity before releasing a Wii 2 presumably in 2011, and Sony will definitely not rush the PS4, 2011 or 2012 is probably when the PS4 comes out

Eh, as long as it's 5 or 6 years I'm happy. The PS2 did have a longer one, but I don't really consider time past the next gen console part of its lifespan.

the longer the ps3 and 360 fight it out, the more gamers get their money's worth on not having to buy another console so soon. this generation is just starting to heat up, folks.

He said that microsoft will support the 360 to atleast 2013.I think thats pretty good since they just completely gave up on the original xbox after the 360 launched.

If the ps2 could last as long as it did. The 360 could milk out another 4 years. But when PC development gets to far ahead. The 360's console exclusives are going to thin out.

11 - They better! Sh*t...
I was pissed when they dropped support for my Xbox. Buying second-hand accessories is Not Fun. Buying second-hand games...well ok, that saved me a lot of money. They seriously could've had a lot more games though. I basically ignored my PS2 for a whole year 'cause of Halo 2 (still <3 it) but yeah.

Publishers, developers, and gamers alike didn't like being forced to go 'next-gen' so early. Eventually sold my Xbox and PS2 for my PS3. Ironically, my Xbox was worth about 4 times more (swear to god).

Hmmmm. That was interesting. I didn't know that Microsoft had intended the 360 for a "long run" but I know one thing for sure, the Xbox 360 sure wasn't built for the "long run" in terms of hardware and disc format.

I am confident that the Playstation 3 will be the console that will still be selling on shelves 7+ years from now, but I just don't see the 360 in that position.

The Xbox 360's limitations have already started to show and Rockstar Games clearly told Microsoft that if they want GTA5 on the 360, they had better do something about the disc capacity ( if they can do anything).

When there are 50GB games coming out on the Playstation 3 and games like Killzone 2 pushing the PS3's hardware and breaking graphical limits that haven't been witnessed, it's obvious that the Xbox 360 wasn't built for the future. The PS3 is future proof and that is the PS3's biggest advantage.

I expect that more 3rd party developers will start to make more PS3 exclusive games like Konami with MGS4, Digi-Guys with Wardevil, and Square Enix with Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3 because they know that they can achieve more in a game if it's developed exclusively on the PS3.

Also Microsoft's first party game publishing isn't anywhere near Sony's level and I really don't think that Microsoft's first party publishing was meant for the "long run" either.

Regardless of what Microsoft says, I think that they will discontinue the Xbox 360 once the new Xbox comes out because Microsoft doesn't have the amount of first party game studios to support both consoles at the same time. Unless Microsoft gets more First Party Studios up and running before the new Xbox is released, the Xbox 360 console itself wont be around as long as the PS3.

I hope they do support it for a few years yet. Especially after a new one is released like Sony did with Ps2/ps3.
While i agree the ps3 is more future proof i don't think this will effect the casual audience that make up most of the sales in the future.
The original xbox was more powerful and future proof than the ps2 but that didn't stop people buying the ps2 did it.
