5 Things PSN Needs to Address to Stay Relevant

Michael Prince:

"Last week I took a look at the Xbox 360's Live service and went over the five items I felt that Microsoft needed to look at in order to stay relevant in the online service realm. Obviously when you start talking about consoles, people are passionate and there were a number of large comments with some great points.

Now I am going to look at the PlayStation Network (PSN) and the five points they need to look at to stay competitive especially since they are new to this online space."

Robocop. What do I win?

Anyway, to reply to the topic. I was glad to hear the author had a hard time finding five things to complain about. I personally have no issues with the PSN. I fail to see why everyone wants every function duplicated from XBL. I think it is a "the grass is greener" kind of thing. Home sounds cool and very innovative. At first I am sure that I will spend some time dinking around with it, but I am not convinced I will use it all of the time. In game XMB would be something I'd never use so bfd.
I am happy to hear that Sony is listening to customer complaints and acting on them. Unfortunately that will cause people to complain more.

I can't help but wonder if a few years down the road we will hear Xbox owners wanting XBL to be more like PSN.

very, very, very VERY valid points. i cannot stress that enough. its kinda frustrating really. admittedly i'm no technology whiz, but i can't for the life of me figure out why Sony has yet to address these things. hopefully it'll all fall in place this year, sooner rather than later.

Number 1 - In Game XBM.
I like this feature but it is not too important. I don't get too may messages or play much online.

Number 2 - Video and Music Should be Here by Now.
I dont need this feature when you have TV and blu-ray movies. I don'twant to clog up my HDD with movies when a disk is far better.

Number 3 - Release PlayStation Home.
Good things come to though who wait and I like the idea but I want it to work fully on release so I am happy to wait. If we have a gamerscore I hope you can cash it in for some payable content.

Number 4 - Unified Updates and Stop Delaying Releases.
I agree with this Europeans get the short end of the stick.

Number 5 - More Content, Both Original and Classic Titles.
This will come in time but I rather focus on PS3 games

what Sony should do is give their achievements some value like allowing you to purchase items with it, like the good old game arcade days with the token tickets.

Lagfree dedicated server based gaming for everyone who owns a PS3 with no stupid charges just to be given the privilege to play online.

Sony wins. The question is will Microsoft finally get a clue and learn from Sony how to do online gaming right.

In game XMB will be here in the 2.4 firmware update.

One just has to look at the likely GoTY(besides MGS4) Resistance 2:

60 players per match
5 man squads within the 60 player matches
Dedicated servers for lagfree online play

vs

Gears of War 2:

Only 5vs5 players per match
No dedicated servers
The same shoddy P2P last gen networking setup as the first Gears of War - host advantages and lag plaguing the game
50 dollars a year just to be allowed to play the game online after you already spent 60 bucks for the game itself

The shotty P2P system is underwhelming, but most companies compensate with dedicated servers they provide themselves.

Both have their pay offs. P2P offers faster downloads (i.e. demos).

However dedicated servers are the only method that offer lag free service.

9 - psn must always keep pushing to stay relevant even when the things we all want now are implemented
Let the others brag how perfect xbl is whilst psn sneaks up from behind. Improvement has to be continual or you will be overtaken. PSN is far from perfect but I'm glad I'm witnessing the birth/rebirth of something that could potentially become great. In five years time we will reminisce about how psn was back in the day and how far its come whilst still being free (hopefully)

Stay competitive?

Here is just a sample what online gaming will be like with Home on the PS3:

Seamless gathering of friends inside of Home and creating a party and jumping right into a multiplayer game:

http://www.eurogamer.net/tv...

After you are done your go right back to inside of Home with your friends. Game companies are no longer forced to create their own lobbies, every developer can just leverage the work Sony has already done with Home.

And just a sample of what Warhawk has for Home party and game launching:

http://kotaku.com/361562/ho...

That just scratches the surface of what game companies will be able to do with Home and party and matchup for their games.

And here are Naughty Dog's Home plans:

http://kotaku.com/361563/ho...

Sony also has plans for custom Clan Spaces where a clan can have their own apartment type area like a player's own apartment where they can all meet up before and after matches and deck the place out in their clan colours and theme.

All this on top of the amazing foundation Sony has created with PSN:

* Free for everyone. Never having to worry about who has and has not paid their 50 dollar a year online fees

* Huge player counts of up to 60 players per match

* Dedicated servers for lagfree online gaming

A movie store will be nice but PS3 owners are already buying or renting BluRay movies now. The Home delay sucks but from the amazing things they are doing with it it will insanely cool when it gets here.

12 - give it time
its going to take a couple years to fully intergrate the online community for PSN

I would bet the PS4 will have something like HOME built into it.

not saying we PS3 owners wont see it because we will. It wont be perfect for some time thou

and im alright with that

i can still play online when ever i want

I think that is the only real problem, as long as they keep the online free and with no lag I am happy. I do wish they would release more PS1 classics though, I would buy quite a few as long as they are still 6 bucks.

I'll take what they'll give me when it's ready. I'm cool with waiting a while for Home and in-game XMB if it means they'll be good when they get here. I don't want half-baked product, thanks. :)

Let's sum up the "Five Things The PlayStation Network Needs to Address to Stay Relevant"

1 - ingame XMB -> not PSN related, firmware issue
2 - Video Store -> not PSN related, store issue, lets be generous and give it 50% relevance
3 - home -> wow, at least something PSN related, though its hardly a dealbreaker
4 - global Store updates -> erm, not PSN related its a store localization issue originating from the separate continental branches that manage their OWN store(SCEE,SCEA,SCEJ).
5 - store content -> see above

So the author managed to get 1.5 of 5 points relevant to his choosen topic .. thats like making a Ferrari topic blogpost and write on how nice the weather was on your last trip to Spain with your Nissan.
