Shane Kim: Xbox 360 Has Best Exclusive Content

As Microsoft's senior vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim is quick to point out that the gaming industry is "a hits-drive business." With one look at Microsoft Game Studios' upcoming lineup, it's easy to see that the first-party publisher is playing it safe, relying heavily on new installments in tried-and-true franchises.

Shane Kim Microsoft's Shane Kim talks up MGS' upcoming lineup. Sequels were in abundance at Microsoft Game Studios' Spring Showcase yesterday, with the publisher showing off follow-ups to Epic Games' Gears of War, Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden, Lionhead's Fable, and Rare's Viva Pinata. However, there were a handful of new properties on hand as well, such as Silicon Knights' long-delayed, just-dated action role-playing game Too Human.

So how will Microsoft's strategy pan out against the competition, and what is the publisher doing to keep the Xbox 360 on top? GameSpot asked Microsoft's Shane Kim just those questions at yesterday's event.

Indeed. Its really up to the gamers to decide because of course people are going to blow their own horn.

That being said I do think that Xbox has a solid line-up this year if only because they are pushing into different genres, expanding their library. Arguably not as impressive as PS3s lineup (depending on your tastes) but they have a good mixture this time, instead of just shooters.

As a matter of fact Im getting exactly what I wanted this year. Last year was the year of the shooter, each game giving so much innovation to the industry, every one with its own distingishing features, but at the end of the day what I am really craving are more action and rpg titles.

Ill still get my shooter fix with Left 4 Dead (so excited), GOW2, and Resistance, but Im really hoping we will get something special with Too Human, Fable, Banjo, Tomb Raider, and Splinter Cell. Hopefully those games will each add something great to the industry.

I missed a truckload of other games but yall get the idea. Innovative features, and solid stories, thats what I want.

PS I know Resistance is a PS3 game. I may buy it just for that. There are some great PS games coming out too, but for now I just own a 360, and this post is long enough without mentioning all the PS games too.

This is an area that Microsoft has almost completely dropped the ball.

Microsoft only has some three or four first party studios. A huge percentage of Microsoft's 'exclusive' content for the 360 isn't really exclusive. Way too many games are PC/360 games that you don't need a 360 to play. And at this point in the 360s life most gamer's PCs are able to run higher quality versions than on the 360, mod support, mouse & keyboard, no online fees, etc.

I see your point, but don't entirely agree.

I bought a new gaming PC recently. Far more powerful/expensive than I needed, and I'm still not entirely sure why I got it, but I guess I wanted to make sure it could handle a few years worth of games.

That being said, I still most 360/PC releases for the 360. For several reasons:

1. I love achievements. I could care less about my Gamer Score, but I feel like achievements add a lot of replayability to otherwise-short single player games. It's the first generation I've ever really found myself replaying games on higher difficulties.

2. Yeah, you pay for multiplayer, but you also basically guarantee a cheater-free environment. That alone is worth a little under $5 a month for me. Not to mention, everyone is on the same general playing level (same controller, same system), which is nice as well.

3. I don't have to worry about video card drivers. Buy the game, stick it in, it works. I mean, assuming the 360 does RRoD on me again. But, that aside. I bought the Witcher last year, and while loving it, it just couldn't stop crashing on Vista. It was absurd. This was a Games for Windows game, no less. Completely ridiculous, and made me remember why I stopped being a PC-only gamer.

But, of course, this is just me. These reasons may not matter to other people. But that's why I own Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, etc. on the 360 and not the PC.

For Microsoft a PC game sale is OK with them. 99.5% (no reference, just my guess) need Windows to work.

I understand what you are saying, I have been a PC and Playstation owner the last three console generations. Before that it was the Sega Genesis that ruled the console; 1 game - EA Sports NHL 92-95. Yes, I admit that I may have been a bit of a fanboy back then. The rule is, after the age of 13, you cant be a fanboy anymore.

Yeah, people referring to the PC as a console is a tired argument. A 360 plays games, you dont have to spend insane amounts of money to augment it, and you dont have to worry about the muss and fuss on a PC.

We are lucky enough to have a console that lets us play some of the must have titles from the PC, and, so far, seems to have the best ports.

I dont want to add flame bait, but the console war is essentially between 360, PS, and Wii. If (in that realm) the 360 gets a game that the other two dont get, it is arguably exclusive to that console.

Case in point: Left 4 Dead. Hopefully it does go cross platform cause that game looks SWEET.

Even those two big games are both getting PC versions. Fable 2 will almost certainly get a PC version latter.

It is hard to imagine that Ninja Gaiden 2 won't have a Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma on the PS3 since they already went through the trouble of writing their own engine for the PS3.

Banjo Kazooie is the only big 360 game I can think of that won't have a PC version.

I swear everyday this Shane Kim guy pops up outta no where and just starts spouting pro-microsoft crap. I know he's the VP but man it's as if they're scared and are trying to re-assure everyone that their e-peen is the largest. You don't see Kaz or Miyamoto going out everyday trying to flex their muscle. It sounds like MS is a bit insecure about themselves. I guess they can feel both Sony and Nintendo creeping up on them.
