Honestly, if I saw the Gametag "thegayergamer", I wouldn't assume it was actually a gay person, but someone mocking gay people.

Not sure why. I guess I just tend to assume the worst about people on Live, based on my experiences there.

This is, sadly, a very grey area, because there's no obvious right or wrong. Even as I write this comment my opinion bounces back and forth. I mean, what if by "gayer" he just meant "happier"? That's a legitimate usage, too.

On the other hand, I can see why gamers would come across it and assume the Gamertag was using "gay" in the derogatory sense and thus report it as offensive. I doubt it was done by homophobes, as the the author of this article seems to think.

I guess the question is, in Microsoft's case, what do you do? This isn't an easy call to make, no matter what people may think. It's easy to say Microsoft should "do the right thing" and stick up for homosexual rights, but how do they know the guy is actually gay and not just lying to keep his Gamertag?

The article says: "What isn’t right is that Microsoft would react to complaints that are based on hate and bigotry.", but this is going by the assumption that the complaints were based on hate and bigotry, and not people being genuinely offended because they thought this guy was actually insulting gays people.

As I said, my opinion keeps bouncing back and forth. There's really no obvious right or wrong in this situation, it just sucks for everyone involved.

While reading the article I got the impression the author had issues with his sexuality.

I got the same I'm a victim tone that seem to also stem from female gamers writing about being discriminated against.

The one where she said

missing the point of gaming and labelling all gamers as homophobic or sexist(guess the irony they are in fact discriminating)

His opinion that all the complaints made was because everyone was homophobic and M$ would only act to help those bigots and not the bigot that wrote the article were very onesided.

He deliberately chose the negative in this story and to see the worst in "straight" people without give on his beliefs.

He's as bad as the other bigots.

You're right when you say that the situation sucks for everyone. Personally, i think the right decision was made based on what XBL sounds like. I could understand why "thegayergamer" could spark controversy and hate while playing online and therefore I could see why MS would want to prevent that. Maybe to protect the gamers or maybe just to protect themselves. You can't please everyone but it sounds like its an attempt to keep the talk of hate away from online play.

In this circumstance it looks like Microsoft did the right thing, if the gamertag was causing controvery and multiple complaints, just as they would be likely to ban other tags like
'the [_FILL_IN_THE_SKANK_] gamer'

The real issue is that we insist on distilling the broad range of human sexuality into three words 'Straight' 'Bi' and 'Gay' ?

It's thinking within those narrow labels that makes it that much easier to hate, and that much harder to understand. Both of those ended up in this gamertag ban, and pretty much all the problems we have as societies living on this planet.

As a species I think we can be pretty embarrassing. It's why I always say:

OMG, I have been an AVID supporter of XBL for almost 7 years now. But this has really begun to open my eyes. I cannot play a game of Halo 3, GTA 4, or R6V2 without running inot some jackass named "ISMOKEWEED" or "WEEDSMOKER" or something like that, and they ban someone for representing themselves as gay? I applaud Microsoft's excellent customer service and community system to help maintain the high standard that makes Xbox LIVE the premier online service for all types of people.

MS helps maintain the most tolerant community of gamers online, and I think that is terrific.

The term "gay" is used more as an insult than as an identifier of sexual preference. That is why it is offensive. I guess if more people used "straight" in their gamertag, then it might be accepted. It is 3 letters that you can no longer use in that sequence...there are a million different letter combinations that people find offensive so I say get over it. People are offended easy...for example...why can't I have the gamertag "fukshi!cokballscunt" ;...that's not even a word...just a series of letters in a sequence that people identify with and find offensive...I can't even spell out that sequence properly for this example!

This is very flawed logic. If my gamertag was L0vesb0obs01 I'd never get harassed for it. Microsoft might eventually catch on and change it, but as a whole the community wouldn't think twice about it.

Saying you're gay is no more than stating you're a Lakers fan. He didn't ASK for anything, accept to be able to be himself in public venues.

I still don't feel it's asking for anything. It's more a problem with American society (I can't speak for other countries since I only live here.) and specifically the demographic that plays on Xbox Live.

Ahah! I never mentioned I HAVE a Xbox 360 now did I? Unfortunately the only Xbox 360 I had got RROD, this was before the warranty, I had no choice but to sell the thing. That doesn't mean I don't like the Xbox 360, it just means I haven't found anything that makes me wanna spend another $400 on, except perhaps Gears of War 2.

Furthermore, the right of free speech was included only so that that the wealthy newspaper owners involved (there were quite a few) could print what they wanted without recourse.
