Xbox 360 Spring Update Touts "Motion Sensor" Features, Game Installs

If Microsoft follows the same schedule it did last year, the Spring system update for the Xbox 360 should be right around the corner. Today, an alleged list of changes included in that update was sent to us, supposedly forwarded from an internal source. The full list-which is after the jump-features about 80 new feature additions, tweaks and changes.

I really hope this is real because that is an excellent update if it is.

Still no x264 video support which sucks but I have a feeling they will never add it.

Oh, it looks like we can't give the PS3 a hard time for game install's now. haha

It's a mixed blessing because HDD's on the 360 are not cheap. But if it could make gameplay smoother and increase load times I am all for it. Please BioWare release a patch for Mass Effect to take advantage of this!!

@1.1 - That is a good point.

And btw I meant to say decrease load times instead of increase.

I dont know why anyone would give the PS3 grief for HD installs. I think its a legitimate idea. However having them optional seems to take the idea a step further.

1.5 - x264 is already supported
as long as its in mp4 format and AAC audio. google "gotsent" for an easy way to go from MKV to mp4 (without transcoding the video). usually takes 10 mins or so for a 4 gig file

Because is HAS to be optional. Otherwise some customers (the ones without a HDD) will be alienated.

I agree, if there is one game on the 360 that needed a install is Mass Effect, it is a great game, but between all the loading and texture pop in, it really detracts from the game.

Well, at this point I see a 360 motion sensor inevitable. Personally... I'm not terribly thrilled. Partially because I own a PS3 and a Wii and I've realized how insignificant motion sensing is in the face of solid game design and true innovation. In the Wii's case, motion sensing is exploited to peddle mediocre games on consumers who don't know any better. In the PS3's case, it seems (to me) sort of like developers are lazily implementing it for gimmicky grenade throws and such without really using it to improve the game (except for a few instances such as Uncharted's balancing areas and hopefully MGS4's FPS mode).

My concern at this point is that with all 3 consoles supporting motion sensing, the next generation will be filled with Wii's. A lot of kids and grannies might be thrilled at that prospect, but me? Not so much.

PS My guess is that Rare will try getting motion sensing in the new Banjo Kazooie, and that'll be MS's platform for selling the gyroscope tech. Makes sense from a business standpoint and a gameplay standpoint.

Actually I think Kim essentially dodged the question. It still remains to be seen, however he did state that they did have a lot of accessories in production. Im at work so I cant quote from the actual article, but I dont think the Xmote rumor is completely dead just yet.

it may seem lost in the shuffle, but i think one of the best items from the rumored update list is the ability to private chat with 4 people at once. i have been hoping for this feature for a long time since i play with 3 of my friends most of the time online, and it sucks when we want to talk about random stuff, but when you are playing team-based stuff, everyone on your team can hear you instead of just your friends. i feel this feature will get rid of alot of the randon dribble (which i have contributed to alot) you hear on xbox live when playing team-based games

I agree. I'm glad they're finally adding 4 way chat that's awesome!

Also, the ability to install to the HDD game data to increase load times...GTA IV, Mass Effect (may be playable now), and Oblivion will all benefit greatly, no more pop up!

Other than that the update seems kind of blah, although, the community features sounds nice. I have a feeling clan support for the fall update will help with Halo Wars sales.

Microsoft did not "have an idea" to make games installs mandatory; game installs on the Xbox 360 have to be optional because allowing a game developer to make games with mandatory installs would break the Xbox 360 platform into two pieces.

The PS3 can use mandatory install because they all have hard drives.

4 player private chat would be welcome indeed. And if there really is an option to install game data, then I will be REALLY happy about that. There aren't a lot of games for the 360 that would need an install, as most games already run smooth as butter without it. But for a game like Mass Effect or Oblivion, this could work wonders. I would seriously go back and play through ME again sooner than expected just to enjoy it with no stuttering and less pop-in.

"Option to delete titles from gamercard with 0 gamerscore and 0 achievements"

"Show dates of an achievement unlocked when comparing."

Great stuff, I really hope group chat makes it, that'll be the bomb.

19 - If true - this will be huge!!!
"• Support for titles to store installation data on Storage Device for faster loading."

Currently it is common to use one of the cores to handle decompression of data (because there is a lot of compression on a DVD). Therefore, by locally saving you can free up the core and this will basically increase the performance of the 360 by 50% - assuming you can program the 360 well enough and your game can handle at least three threads (one per core). If this is true it basically makes what is currently a very close race in performance a significant advantage for MS and the future games for MS should be better than the PS3.

Now I know everyone is still learning the PS3 but the architecture is such that it will be impossible to fully use all the available power for almost any gaming code so in the end - MS will have a more powerful console with a better GPU. This, in turn, will allow future games to be even better on the xbox 360. After all, right now the PS3 uses downloading just to be close (GTA is pretty close) to the xbox 360 and there is the huge bluray disk so there is little need to compress data. If you can remove that need to decompress data on the XBOX 360 you will suddenly find that the PS3 has no CPU advantages compared to the XBOX 360 and the XBOX 360 has a better GPU.

The one exception will be games that use large amounts of cut scenes that are not done with the in-game engine - those cut scenes take up space and the bluray disk (or multiple DVDs) will be the only way to do that. But the ability to store data on the HDD will allow larger levels on the xbox 360 and should, imo, definitely tilt the landscape in favor of the xbox 360.

It will be interesting to see what 2009 brings if this is true. Of course, right now it is still a rumor and MS may decide to chicken out on the idea but I hope not - for the gamers in all of us.

ip-student - 596 days 21 hours ago
19.2 - That is a pretty weak response...
If you feel my opinion is incorrect (and or biased) please explain. Do you have proof that a core is not often used to decompress data off the DVD? Or do you some reasons for why you feel decompression is not a cpu-intensive process? Because it is.

I don't think you are suggesting that the PS3 is not that close to the XBOX 360 so I am not sure how to response. I will say that the PS3 will still probably have some advantages from a CPU standpoint so that was perhaps too strong but the advantages will mostly be nonexistant for gaming code.

22 - Sony and microsoft are gonna be USING UP OUR PRECIOUS SPACE which equals $$$
MY problem with madatory installs when you buy alot of games from the virtual stores and original disks and they are actually using 3 to 5 gigs per game i feel that is a problem because you definitly will have to buy a new hd sooner or later. every game on ps3 seems to be doing this and that is a pain. i will need to buy a 500 gig hd for the ps3 soon just to keep up that is not fair i hope the 360 doesnt do the same.
I see $$$ signs in the eyes of microsoft and sony, for that we should be just downloading them from the virtual store so its not like were paying 65 bucks for a disk plus using our hd space to install it anyway wouldnt the games perform even better then! Do away with disks then!

The price of the 120 GB HDD is crazy - shouldn't be more than $100 USD - heck you want people to download movies and things - that is how you make money.

Oh well - until the price drops I am sticking with the 20 GB HDD and just not buying as many arcade games.

24 - really looking forward to....
moving up the smaller downloads in my que. I would que up 3-4 items but try and do it by smallest first and leave the game demos last. Now if I am have just started a demo dl, I can move up the smaller stuff to be next.

I also really want to try the copy content from ext source to hdd. Sweet if it is true. Next update should include copy non protected content from hdd to ext source. If they give you one way, they should give the other as well.
