Shane Kim: 'Gears of War 2' Is Biggest First-Party Xbox 360 Game Of 2008

MTV Multiplayer writes: "Not that anyone should be surprised, but Shane Kim, head of Microsoft Game Studios, told me, Brian Crecente (Kotaku), Chris Grant (Joystiq) and N'Gai Croal (Newsweek) yesterday that "Gears of War 2" will be the biggest Xbox 360 game of the year, the flagship exclusive for the holiday season.

Not "Fable 2"? He said that game is coming along really well. But "Gears 2? is the big one.

So no giant surprise game for Holiday 2008, 360 fans. You already know which title Microsoft is betting its chips on.

UPDATE: Just to be clear, he's talking about titles coming from Microsoft Game Studios."

unless there is a Wii game I do not know about, but the pre-orders are already in the bag for this game. It's proven and looks to be better after that video.

MGS4 is PS3 biggest 3rd-party title, and I'm guessing resistance 2 for 1st-party. technically EPIC makes games for all consoles so gears game is not really a 1st-party game.

Unless you have a sleeper game?

3 - Gears 2 clearly is their "Biggest" title...

It has the largest fan base so obviously its going to be their flag ship. That said, that doesn't mean they are only going to promote it or push the most money onto promoting it. I think they are actually going to pimp Banjo very, very hard this X-mas. Gears is going to take much less effort to sell. They will do some Dorrito's or Pepsi tie-in with Gears and get other companies to help foot the bill for promoting Gears (aka Halo3) since its well established now. MS is good at the hype machine that is for sure!

I think there's no doubt that Gears 2 will sell very well (9+million), and Fable 2 should do quite well (5+million).

For PS3, MGS4 could do well amongst the hardcore (6+million) whilst Resistance 2 may well do similar figures (6+million).

But this all ignores the Wii and it's WiiFit monster! That thing, whether you think it's a game or not, will sell more than any other this year (12+million) thanks to the casual waggle loving masses.

Im a GeoW fan .. but the second one isnt as impressive as the first one ( in 2006 ! )

everyone knows that chainsaw battle and meatcover isnt enough to blow our mind! .. the graphic improvment isnt noticable..

30 characters in screen without shadow and with fool animation? (I saw the HD vid 10 times with Quicktime frame by frame) same animation , same character models , same sound effects,etc(I hate gun sound, its like a spray! )..

anyway we didnt see enough vid s to judge this game.. its not the biggest MS exclusive for 360 this time , because everybody knows that there will be a PC version ( unlike the first one )

imo Fable 2 , Too Human or Banjoo must have more hype than GeoW2..specialy Fable2

are un-proven titles.

1. Fable is looking great but gamers felt it was underwhelmed on the Original xbox.

2. Too human has been threating to come out for years and looks like SK finally got their act together.Gamers have bee Hot/Cold/Hot/cold about that game, hopefully it does heat up.

Banjo has been missing in action for quite a while, I wonder the gamers that used to own an N64, what do they currently own? Or would they buy a 360 for just that game? We'll see..

Gears of war 2, well it's gears of war 2.

The fist game was pretty good in terms of graphics/gameplay and sold pretty well. They are focusing on gameplay and Story which were the major gripes of the first game. graphics is less of a determining factor. It's does need to whoa!! you that much this time around, it just needs to improve on the weak areas.

At least that's what I think.

1- Fable isnt an unproven franchise imo ( the first one was decent , not AMAZING but enough to have some hardcore fans )

2- gears of war was unproven in 2006 too , but with excelent production and design and New Unreal 3 engine and amazing gampley it did ROCK!

so Microsoft can make another mega hit with enough Hype and excelent dev.

or just waste their time and money on Geow2 that wont attract any new user to XBOX360 and just sell 3 or 4 million to current hardcore 360 users..

I guess they mean first-party published as opposed to first-party developed, which is generally what people mean when they say "first-party".

@ above - I think technically "second-party" refers to when a contract is in place that the studio will only make games for a certain publisher or the publisher owns part of the developer.

Geow 2 isn't a first party title as MS doesn't own the property. Just like NG2, it is a third party exclusive with the developer owning a IP rights. Fable 2 or Banjo 3 would be their biggest First Party titles

Yet Epic still hasn't signed on for another Gears3 for Xbox. The next one will probably be MP. Now that PS3 has gained significant ground on the 360, and it leads in alot of territories in Europe and Asia, Epic has more incentive than ever to bring Gears to PS3. I think there is a good change GeoW3 will be a PS3 game, its not like the PS3 can't run it.
