Microsoft claims 40% GTA IV attach rate for new consoles

VG247: Speaking in the latest edition of the Major Nelson podcast, perennial guest "e" has claimed that nearly half of all new Xbox 360's sold since GTA IV launched have also included a GTA IV sale.

"Roughly 40 percent of consoles going out the door had a copy of GTA going with them," he said.

I was thinking almost anyone buying a console right now would pick up GTA. I hope/expect this is higher on PS3.

Microsoft release a ton of stats on the game last week, in which is claimed that 60 percent of all copies of the title sold in the US during it’s first week on sale were for the 360 version.

So even with their big lead in the US ps3 owners bought at least 40% this coming form ms too so we got to imagine they are being as optimistic as possible..

Personally cant wait for the numbers especially the hardware numbers ps3 is gonna close the gap is the US a lot sooner than anyone thinks imo.

not bashing or anything, but as big a game as GTAIV is/was, shouldn't the MAJORITY of people buying a console that week or anytime subsequent to that week be walking out with GTAIV?

I dont understand why they're happy about this, shouldn't it be higher. I mean why would you buy an Xbox now if not for GTA?

Plus if they sold 100K consoles it means 40K bought the game too. So?

Heres a stat. M$ sold 3,288,125 copies of GTA and only 263,861 consoles, so for every 12.5 games they sold one console.

I wont do the Sony numbers, this isn't about Sony. I just dont see what they're going on about here. What they're really saying is we sold 105K games because of the console out of over 3.2 million and that means 3 million didn't need a console. Someone needs to teach M$ how to brag better. Its similar to how Halo didn't really drive Hardware sales because like everyone guessed if you wanted Halo chances are you would already have an Xbox.

Lots of kids play xbox 360 too, so if their parents are any good at being parents they won't be playing or getting GTA IV for their 360. Same thing goes for the PS3.

Actually no...If you read it Microsoft was referring to 40% of 360s sold. It had nothing to do with the PS3. = 40% of 360s sold were 'with' GTA IV and 60% 'without' GTA IV.

Really not that hard to comprehend.

Best Buy was giving a $50 gift certificate if you bought a 360 with GTA and Amazon was offering a $30 gift certificate with the combo purchase. No such deals were available for the PS3. The best I saw was a free blu-ray remote with the combo purchase...

This is a rough statistic based on a relatively small sample of sales and not a long term value. The game has been out for only a couple weeks. This percentage is an estimate of game sales with hardware and does not reflect the amount of game sales from existing console owners or people that are buying the console now or in the future with a GTA sales down the road.

What this number does indicate is there are people buying the Xbox 360 to play a formerly exclusive Playstation title. That is something to brag about. What the actual number is won't be determined untill next months NPD numbers come in.

well if you consider the failure rate is at 33% then yea that is pretty close to 40% ;)haha im a 360 owner just hoping for some laughs but in all honesty who cares does the amount of copies that gta sold how does that affect you? will you get some kind of prize in the mail from rockstar if your console sells more copies if anything it will probably just lead to more pricks online....

Then with over 100 million to 120 million ps2 consoles sold, and considering that its heaviest hitters like GoW, FFXII, GT4, etc each sold a few million copies each, how pathetic do you think the PS2 attach rate was/is?????

12.3 - I guess since we are just making things up nowadays...
It's also widely known that the 360 is more for hardcore gamers, where the PS2 was/is the first console to really tap into the casual market. IF you were smart, you would know that the only real way to compare is to either compare their attach rates at the same install base or wait until the 360 sells 100 million+ units, but we all know that will never happen.
