'Ghostbusters' Developer Prefers Working On PS3 First

MTV Multiplayer writes: "We've seen many developers struggle with multi-platform development this generation. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are different technical beasts. Complications with the wildly popular Unreal Engine 3 middleware have made things even more difficult.

Terminal Reality, the studio behind the upcoming "Ghostbusters," spent a lot of time evaluating each console before moving forward with their first next-generation game, Terminal Reality president Mark Randell told MTV Multiplayer at a Sierra media event last month.

In the end, contrary to most teams this generation, they decided to make PlayStation 3 their lead development platform for "Ghostbusters." Here's why."

2 - ps3 dev helps 360
It has been said before that when doing development on the 360 first then working on PS3, it turns out subpar. If dev starts on PS3 first then by the time a 360 version is made it is on par with each other.

So to benefit multiplatform development, PS3 should be lead as it will only serve to make the game equal on both platforms.

To add to this, it has to do with the way the 360 has the memory available to it. PS3 has seperate memory for video and system ram. If a game is made using the unified structure of the 360 (first) it then needs to be recompiled to work in a split memory system of the PS3. That isnt an issue for either platform if the game is made with the PS3 memory system in mind from the beginning.

I think I remember reading devs saying it is easier for the 360 to emulate the memory system of the PS3 than it is the other way around. Someone please elaborate on this for me.

I think it has more to do with how the Cell architecture punishes poor coding more severely than traditional multi-threaded processors. A game lead on the PS3 simply made it more efficient and well-written by default.

Here's a paper that does a very good job of introducing the pros and cons of the cell from a scientific (non-gaming) point of view, but I think it does a good job of highlighting what's so innovative about it:

2.2 - but
if the games are made first in mind with ps3 split memory, them x360 game has split memory too? If a game is made in mind with the unified memory of x360, the x360 wouldn't have better performance? That way xbox360 isn´t struggle?

2.3 - lol sorry kid
but you have no idea what you are talking about, all 512mb of memory are available to eithe the cell or RSX on the PS3. Stop reading MS propaganda and taking it as gospel, it makes you look silly when you run into people that know how this stuff works.

btw I finally threw the 360 version of GTA on 1080p flatscreen and let me tell you, you don't need 400% magnification to see the terrible dithering and pixel shading of the ATI GPU. To think I used to be a big ATI fan, how far they have fallen. This is definitely Nvidias market now.

So it's easier to duplicate the application made for the PS3 versus duplicating the process of the XBox 360? And yet the PS3 is the better system? (so they say) I have YET to see anything that the XBox 360 can't handle on it's system better.

erm not really owned, what he asked was a game that is not possible on the 360, and every game is possible on every system.. even MGS4, who uses around 50GB according to kojima, is possible even on the Wii.. the only thing is, it would have to be stripped down a lot for it to be possible.. and MGS4, uncharted and all are possible on the 360 if its either stripped down, or multiple discs..

so tbh there is not real argument in this question

Erm, yes. It was really an owning. He didn't say the 360 could handle them, he said handle them BETTER. So, that not stripped down, which would nullify your little "so tbh there is not real argument in this question " comment.

4.4 - oh dear
what they mean is they can pull back on code and processor intensive features of a game and make it run on a 360. This is more about the porting process than what console does what better. Try not to flamebait so hard.

I can confidently say that I believe that the 360 could handle each of those games better. If the games were designed for the 360 from scratch and not just an attempt to save money and port a game over from lousy coding on the PS3.

I have STILL seen NOTHING that the 360 can't handle better then the PS3.

(Comment from MTV page)
"And who owns the rights to the Ghostbusters film? Yes folks, thats right, Columbia Pictures…and guess who owns Columbia Pictures? Yup, thats right, Sony.
Sounds like Spin to me."

Lmao....of course. Theirs always a reason.....People never fail to be idiots.

And you just ignored to read the response to this from the same page? It takes a lot of fanboy faith to believe there has been an ultimatum on the Ghost Busters gaming license agreement to force the PS3 as the lead platform.

Why must you idiots (quoting you here - in case you don't see the hint) always bend everything as some sort of conspiracy against your console? The developer's words make perfect sense.

the fact that Sony owns the rights to GhostBusters movies doesn't matter tho.. coz the movie makes are only to give a company the rights to make a game.. i mean look at Spiderman 3.. the movie is Owned directly by Sony Pictures.. but it went multi-platform.. i'd bet SCE would have loved to have that game PS3 Exclusive..

There is a possibility that it might affect but firstly the developers should then be lying and secondly there would most likely be some sort of exclusive elements in the agreements as well.

ive said this many times. But I dont like the idea of multiplat games. I would rather developers spending more time optimizing 1 versian.. than piss assing around with ports.

6.3 - Ok and? What does that have to do with this
"We’ve found that writing for the PS3 first and then porting to the 360 and PC is a much simpler and more efficient procedure,” he concluded."

???

The Burnout Paradise people did it that way too and it's equal on both systems. I'm sorry but maybe you like seeing the PS3 get crappy ports but I don't. I don't understand how you think Sony owning the movie rights has to do with them "writing for the PS3 first and then porting it to the 360". It's been repeatedly said that it makes both versions more equal.

um, wasn't GTA IV a 360 port to PS3?, reviewers say it runs and looks better on PS3, although sharper on the 360.
