GTA IV: PS3 outselling 360 3:1 at UK's Asda

VG247 writes: "Both titles have generated great interest on the Asda website, with strong pre-orders, and the PS3 version is selling three times that of 360, which is surprising and not in line with what we'd expect" said Duncan Cross, Asda's head of games.

2 - I know its rough math
But if the 360 install base is 20 million worldwide, and the ps3 is 13 million (upping these figures from the last confirmed-ish numbers because they are both still selling)but there are 3x....ok lets make it 2x (just to take into account the fact that NA may be swinging more towards the 360 version) the pre order numbers for the ps3, to me, in my humble opinion, that shows that either alot of people with 360's are not interested in gta4, or there are a hell of alot of people planning on buying a ps3.

I think it's a lot of people buying PS3s for GTAIV.

I personally know 4 people, one of which with a 360 already, who are buying a PS3 to play GTAIV.

That's the power of brand recognition.

2.2 - Correction
Thats the combined power of brand recognition and quality

EDIT: The thing is 3:1 is a big ratio. Assuming the same percentage of the userbase for each console are going to buy GTA4 (actually i think a smaller % of ps3 owners would buy it due to the more diverse nature of the ps3 gamer) and you put that number at say, 10 percent of the userbase (your only talking 10 out of every hundred gamers), thats 2 million 360 sales (which i believe is high, yet attainable within a short period) and 6 million ps3 sales. Your talking huge numbers here. 6 million is 10 percent of 60 million. This is all theoretical of course, but hopefully you can see where i'm coming from. your either looking at a massive surge of ps3 sales, or 33% of the user base is buying this game. Either way those numbers are big

@Fallen Angel - Asda is owned by Walmart, and is the second (I think Tesco is first) if not the biggest Supermarket chain in the UK. So if it's outselling 3:1 there then you can expect it to be a little similar elsewhere too.

From what I've seen of the specific Game stores, most of them are advertising the PS3 bundle specifically, no mention of 360 DLC anywhere.

Retailers aren't advertising the DLC for the simple reason, they make the same amount of money from the games and more from the PS3 bundle, while they make nothing from the DLC.

3 - I think it will go like this:
Every other region outside of the US (UK / Europe, AUS / NZ, etc): 2 or 3:1 in favor of the PS3

Inside the US: 1.5 or 2:1 in favor of the 360.

I have a feeling the PS3 version will hold its own against the might of the 360's attach rate, however I think that because the 360 is strongest in the US it will be slightly outsold here in the US.

I hate sales articles with a passion, but this is one game where I will be interested to see which version, after being out for at least a week, will come out on top.

4 - Each shop
Will report different pre order sales, Asda is one of the cheapest supermarkets here in Britian so ps3 owners will order it from there so they dont have to pay the full rrp. At game its £10 more expensive than the 360 version, where as at Asda the prices are the same so its common sense that people will want to save £10, i know i would

4.1 - It's a good point
that you make. we have to remember that these are only rough numbers, and things like variable prices do come into the equation. We wont really know until the games been out for a few months.

gamehubs.com have the game even cheaper... reading the shoutbox at one point, someone asked about his order of 10 copies of GTA4 for the 360.

The problem is that going to Asda means that I'd have to mingle with Chavs. Call me a snob, but I think I'd rather buy my game from somewhere that doesn't have an overweight 16 year old screaming at her child:

"Beyonce-Shakira! Put that f@cking tin of f@cking beans down and f@cking come back here"

I can never imagine buying a game from ASDA or TESCO's.I rather buy from HMV or GAME.

I only know one person that has bought a game from ASDA in the past 6months.

Anyway it's cheaper for PS3 owners over at ASDA, so if i was getting it for the PS3 then i will definately shop for it there.

7 - Another Microsoft mistake
I have never doubted for one second that the PS3 will sell far more copies of this 'game', i use the term loosely, because i think it is more geared to the PS3 user mentality, than the 360 core user.Using myself as an example, i have absolutely no interest in this type of game and suggest the PS3 has a much younger audience for this type of software. So, yes it will sell bucket loads on PS3, but more possibly by reason of target audience, than other reasons suggested here.

7.1 - don't make assumption too early
just remember prior to the release of last month's NPD data, Patchter predicted that PS3 outsold 360 by a large margin and people started praising the PS3 so much but missed one thing which M$ themselves didn't make any statement beforehand like the previous 2 months! meaning that they somehow knew that they sold more(even only a mere 5000), this is just my assumption! but winning is still winning!

this time around GTAIV sales, as hopefully as I want the PS3 to reign supreme, I'm not anymore will trust anything like this! Just like the NPD scenario, M$ is currently acting 'cool' and remains silent! I hope all of u got what I'm trying to say! just don't be too happy just yet! but I still wish the PS3 wins!!

Ok frankly speaking, I never thought this would happen. I thought PS3 will sell as a hardware more but its selling software like this will help them so much so that other companies will realize that if you make a good game on PS3 it will sell & if you make a ugly half baked port of 360 then nobody is gonna buy your games. Microsoft will be fainting now. This was the ace they thought will help them save this year, they don't have any other ACE till November (Gears of War2) or Fable 2 if it comes around Oct. I guess.

9 - I guess you could chalk up any 360 victory in GTA software sales to artificial inflation of game prices
There is no reason whatsoever that PS3 titles should be selling for more than 360 counterparts. It sucks that Europe always gets the shaft for whatever reason...

9.1 - disagree (for once)
In australia anyway, the price difference doesnt exist if you pre-order, or at all at some retailers. Even if it does, i dont think 10-20 dollars is going to sway some one from purchasing one console to the other, and the only people its really affecting are people who own dual consoles.

Well like others have stated this is only one supermarket chain but I feel that it will reflect pre-order ratios here in the UK among the other stores too.

Outside of the 'hardcore' gamers, most of those who still play their PS2's will, more than likely, pick up the PS3 version - without a doubt. Of course that excludes those who have already got themselves a 360.

It's looking like GTA4 is going to be a huge system seller - whilst the attach ratio for the 360 gamers may be more, I believe Sony will sell more systems due to this game than MS.

11 - I certainly hope that this game sells well on all platforms
But I do have a hint of desire to see it sell better per capita or per lifetime sales on the PS3. It would just show that the GTA name is in fact a PS brand. ;-)

12 - I was a bit surprised
I have a PS3 so I'll be getting that version. But 3:1 ratio is pretty staggering. I wonder if it's a blip or whether it's a general trend. I haven't really seen any adverts or any real push from Sony to promote their bundle (I may have missed this though). Either way, and for once both PS3 and XBox360 owners can enjoy a wonderful game when it's made available - something magical :)

wow, war over cos more people are buyin GTA 4 in ASDA, if you live in the UK you would know that this means nothing, what about the other food stores? sainsbury's, tesco, CO-OP, etc, also how about the places that actualy specialise in games like Game, Gamestation, HMV, Virgin etc, if this was Game and not asda then it would mean something, who buys there games from Asda? all this is, is a website dying for some quick hits

15.1 - Game
has sold out of the 360 version but not the PS3, Gameplay has more 360 pre orders then PS3, and the same goes for Amazon.

I have only checked these online shops out, but I think it tells a story.

Which ever way, Rockstar is going to make a load of money from both platforms. Maybe a more from the 360 with DLC.

even if they only represent 5-10% of the total sales in the country...chances are that they will be at least somewhat representative of the country as a whole. Now the question is just how representative will they be...

think of it like you would a political poll...they only actually poll maybe a couple thousand people, but they extrapolate it out to the electorate as whole.

In all honesty I dont care which version sells the most and I dont see why anyone else should have more than just a passing interest in this really.

As long as they make it for the console that im playing then im happy and that should be the case for every single one of you (providing of course you own either a PS3 or an XBOX 360)

I think people have forgotten about all the PS2 owners out there. I work for Currys in the UK, and for the first time since the PS3 launch we have sold out.
