GameSpot: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Preview

You'd think that after 16 years and a bevy of installments, the Mortal Kombat series would have lost its ability to be shocking. The passage of time has seen the game evolve from now humble-looking digitized origins to the sleek, robust 3D models in 2007's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The fatalities, which were once a lightning rod of controversy, have grown along with the series and become a key part of the franchise's appeal. The series has become an institution that's managed to change with the times and keep its fans--and this is no mean feat.

The downside to that kind of longetivity is that 16 years in the public eye makes it pretty hard to deliver a surprise. Of course, after spending some time with MK series creator Ed Boon, gamers GameSpot have seen it's not impossible. The veteran developer dropped more than a few jaws with his announcement of the eighth entry in the series, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Yep. That's right Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and the MK posse versus Superman, Batman, and familiar faces from the DC universe. And yeah, it's not going to be M-rated. How's that for some curveballs?

Gut is telling me this is actually going to be a fun game to play. Will it be in the upper echelon of fighting titles, I doubt that. The air combat could give it a whole new love for fans if it plays out well...Very interesting indeed...

Hmm...honestly, im intrigued. Mk was dying. Ive been playing since the very first came out. I grew up with it. Im keen to see some change. If they released just another Armageddon style with next gen graphics would just be so tired.

That's it. "The game will not be M rated", that's the death of Mortal Kombat.

HAHHAHAHAAH so its true...there will be no Fatalities (prob no blood)
LOL at E10+ or T for Animated Violence!

This game will be the biggest bomb EVA
Ive owned EVERY MK game....sure as HELL not buying this. I was so excited when i heard news of MK8 was coming soon.

MK series is just going down and down
In MKA, it had a AMAZING concept, but too bad Everyone had same > > Square moveset, and NO fatalities (wtf at create a fatality).

Now Midway is like, how can we screw this dying franchise more into the ground?
I got it...lets throw something that makes NO sense and lets take out the blood/gore/fatalities that MK is traditional to.

Midway....YOU OFFICIALLY SUCK (until you TRY to redeem urself with MK9 (considering there will be one after this ARSELOAD of profit loss from this game).

Ahhhh....i take back what i said about Blood...there is that, but still THIS GAME SUCKS ARSE!

Doubt they can do fatalities without the M rating, even the lame generic combo ones like in MK:Armageddon.

With every new article about this game, I fall deeper and deeper into disappointment.

3 - It is a sad day
for 'true' Mortal Kombat fans. This game seems more geared towards the new generation of gamers. As a diehard MK fan I am truly sad.:(
Good Bye Mortal Kombat, you were a good friend over the years.

Mortal Kombat without blood and fatalities isn't 'Mortal Kombat' in my opinion.

sigh you ruined it Boon! You fuc*ing jackass!! I won't lie the premise and idea is interesting, the fighting looks fun, but as a GIMMICK! This is not MK, damnit damnit damnit..."we wanted to keep the brutality of MK intact" Oh kiss my ASS! You wanted to keep the brutality, so you interjected DC characters and got rid of the ONE thing that made your game cool, G-O-R-E!! God Midway how you've lost your way. We bought the game for the wild unimaginable things we got to do after beating the sh*t out of each other, we didn't buy the game cause we got to kick and punch each other. I'm betting sub-zero is freeze-less and F'ing Scorpion has no spear. Only way this game can be fair is if everyone is equal and can only kick and punch. BOO BOO BOO!!!!

Now I am mad not M what's it going to be E. I will say MK VS DC could have been really great if it was M and allowed Blood and such. I have to say why would Time Warner not allow the DC characters get killed. They die all the time in the Comics. If any thing the game should have just been MK VS Batman. Batman is the darkest in the DC universe but if Batman can't even get to Kill some one that really sucks.

6 - Not M?
Why? Come on Boon, don't let this happen. I bet it's DC who's pressuring them to keep the violence to minimal level. He only mentioned no stage fatalities so that kind of leaves the debate open for whether or not finishing fatalities will be integrated. From looks of the videos, graphics are not awesome for a nex-gen game, still it looks fun.

R.I.P. Mortal Kombat. You provided me with years of violent and brutal fighting entertainment, you'll live on in my memories as you were once viewed and not this atrocity which stands before me.

*sobs and throws reef made up of Scorpions harpoon and a few skulls*

Well guys, at least we still have Streetfighter HD, Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 for our next brilliant fighting game fix. I haven't got money to waste on a fighting game which isn't up to those games standards.

By the way, Rare? Now's the time to come back with Killer Instinct please!

8 - RIP MK 1992-2008
MK died as a result of Ed Boon pulling the plug on it, to the dismay of gamers everywhere. MK leaves behind a legion of devoted fans. There will be a public viewing at 7pm, followed by an immediate burial afterwards. In leau of flowers, give your money to developers who give a damn.

10 - I was playing MK2 last night
I was thinking they were going back to the "Roots" and the meat & Potato of the genre, but I guess I'll be playing MK2/Ultimate for ever.

I just hate the 3-D BS Fighing games. Certain fighters are just not made for 3-D. Leave that to polished fighters such as Soul Caliber, Virtua Fighter, and Tekken.

Games like SF, MK..etc should stay 3-D or maybe a mix of some sort.

13 - This would of been funny on April Fools day
I can guarantee you this game will have broken gameplay. The story is what was keeping the Mortal Kombat series alive for most fans. Mortal Kombat's gameplay died a very long time ago and now the story dies.....today...

Mortal Kombat's gameplay died when Mortal Kombat 4 came out. They lost the formula that gave Mortal Kombat that great replay value. MK1 was the start, MK2 they were definitely on to something, MK3 is when the magic started but unfortunately the game was rushed and they had memory issues that stopped certain characters from being in the game plus some major bugs, and UMK3 is when they nailed every aspect on the head that makes it a true and most balanced Mortal Kombat game to date! Mk4, they completely lost the formula. UMK3 remains THE BEST Mortal Kombat game Midway has and will ever create.

Mortal Kombat's gameplay died a very long time ago.
R.I.P. to MK's story...which died today.

I was hoping with the introduction of the DC characters that they would go back to the days of MK 2 or UMK3. thats when MK really shined. once they went 3D they ruined it for me!!

Ugh, I can't get over this. Even the game delivers on the gameplay and improves the fighting system, I can't see myself playing this. It just does not mix well. And why DC? Batmans pretty cool (on his own) but superman is just lame, IMO.

18 - what the...
I remeber them saying the new Mortal Kombat would be departure from the old series, with gears of wars quality graphics. And an new fighting system, so they can compete with other better fighters like DOA, Tekken etc..

Now, I look at this and nothing has changed except for the inclusion of DC characters.

Ya know to be honest the last few MK games have sucked even though they got good reviews they never really played like good fighters. It seems they have run out of ideas and cant figure out how to improve the series so they are going for a gimmick to try to save it. All the things that MK is known for will be thrown out the window due to the inclusion of the DC universe which is a odd choice for this indeed. This is most likely the beginning of the end for the MK series.

Why DC? The ONLY good character that DC even has is batman every other hero they own sucks ass its just wrong. Its almost as bad as Star Wars in Soul Caliber IV

20 - Why?
Boon is straying away from MK's core product. NEVER--------NEVER stray from your core product. Blood, gore and fatalities are the life blood of MK. With out it, its a hollow shell of what could be.

I was eagerly anticipating this game for some time now. I am, by every stretch of the imagination, disappointed beyond belief. My dreams of a next gen MK experience are all but shattered.

Im so genuinely upset.

Okay so one things good has come out of crap news. Was thinking how I actually miss Mortal Kombat since the last one I played was Deception. (Didn't get Armageddon as I didn't like the idea of the generic fatalities) So I popped in Decption into my PS3 to reminisce. Then I thought, "why not play MK2 on the PS3" so I did yet the online as everyone knows is VERY laggy but I had found some people to play against crazily enough and it was fun for about three matches.

Then I had a brainwave!

I just remembered that while I was packing my old PSOne games in a box a few weeks ago, I saw one of my favorite fighting games in that generation:

Mortal Kombat Trilogy!!!!!!

Man, I loved that game.

Now playing it on my PSP via remote play on my PS3 in bed :) I'm in MK heaven!
