Should In-Game Advertising Anger You?

It's becoming abundantly clear that advertisements are playing and will continue to play a role in gaming. What is needed now is a clear recognition of what is and is not acceptable ad encroachment.

Not if they throw a ton of cash at the developer so they can make a better game.

It doesnt anger me. If anything it gives the game a sense of atmosphere...the only time it would piss me off, is if its blatantly everywhere. (See Trans-GMC-formers the movie)

That pissed me off to no end, every shot was a GMC commercial especially the one at the dam. Also the Mt. Dew Transformer was an abomination unto Cybertron.

The whole movie was an abomination. I knew exactly how it would play out the moment I heard Michael Bay was directing it. They should have called it what it really was: "Shia Labeouf and the GMC Robots".

Optimus Prime didn't even make an appearance until 1 hour into the movie. How are you going to make a Transformers movie that revolves around the humans? Hollywood, is there no childhood memory you can't crap on?

I think it shouldn't anger us if the ads were reasonably placed. For example, maybe a Sprite advertisement could be put on a soft drink dispenser machine.

It is rather awkward when I am playing Battlefield 2 and there is a big Nvidia sign in the middle of the battlefield.

It doesn't make me angry as I long as I don't see it in the middle of the screen for every load or pause in gameplay.

It angers me when I get blatant in-game ads and still get charged $60 for a game. It doesn't anger me when the ads fit in with the game(i.e., ads in baseball stadiums) and add to the atmosphere though.

Doesn't bug me in Burnout one bit. However if it were all over a game like Call of Duty I think I would be more then a little miff'd

I don't really care, even if its something that has not been announced yet or even if its where they mock their own products

As long as the ads don't detract from the experience than I really don't have a problem. I think that at times they could make the game seem more realistic, but if they are plastered all over the damned place then I'd be pissed. I don't buy things because of advertising and the only reason I watch commercials or pay attention to an ad is so I can have a quick laugh.

Can anyone tell me what the hell is wrong with ads? They're just pictures that take the place of what would've been another picture.
WHO CARES?

It doesn't bother me in Burnout Paradise because they're just so well done they make Paradise City seem more alive. Need For Speed Underground 2 was the greatest offender of ad whorage though with the giant Cingular logo on screen and ad shout outs from the storyline chick. When tasteful and well placed they're not bad, but when done like the aforementioned NFS then well, the developers should be ashamed.

if im playing Pro Evo or FIFA, and the stadiums didnt have billboards or have nike or adidas boots and kits etc, then it would take away the realism factor in the game and i wouldnt like it. i remember when PES 1 had just konami billboards and FIFA had the full shebang, and i enjoyed FIFA more because of the realism. Pro Evo owned at gameplay though. call me weird, i dont care.

17 - I'm actually doing a project on in game advertising
I'll be undertaking quite a big global research project over the next few weeks but the bottom line is the consumers/gamers need to have a say in develoment and levels of aceptance. Also, there is a reall opportunity of having a game for free in exchange for advertising. Again, as long as the advertising is not obtrusive then I can't see a mjor issue. I'll have to wait and see what the gamers say! I'll see if I can post the results of the survey later this year.

In the end it won't be up to the gamers or the developers. It's always up to the man who's paying the money. Remember advertising has standards and methods that are always employed. It will be the developers job to place the ad into the game and make sure it's not obscured, visible and easily recognizable.

The perception that developers and gamers have the last say is false and misleading. Advertising is part in your face and subtle. I don't want my games becoming like the internet. Look how complacent we've become about internet advertising. That will be reflected in the game world as well.

Remember, it's not hardcore gamers that they're going to be asking about the advertising, it's Joe Average gamer who gets the majority of questions thrown his way and his opinion counting for more.

Just beware.
