Feature: PS3 vs Xbox 360: The release calendar showdown

While the Nintendo Wii is off and running in a different direction (quite successfully), the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are left in a shootout for honor... and exclusive games. A few months ago, we began to notice a shift in the tides after Microsoft unloaded a volley of its biggest exclusive games: games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, and BioShock.

But now it's 2008, and Sony's poised to win the year with a huge list of compelling PlayStation 3 exclusives. Curious to see how the fight will pan out, we formulated a list of exclusive titles for the PS3 and Xbox 360 coming in 2008 and 2009. With Wikipedia and our own notes as sources, we've constructed the definitive release calendar comparison.

But first, a few ground rules. This list will not include multiplatform games, sports titles, or downloadable software; we're focused on exclusive retail games. That means Grand Theft Auto IV is not a factor on this list, so go read about it here.

If God of War comes out this year ill be one happy man

Everyone disagree with me. Seriously. I wanna see how many disagrees N4G can muster up. I consider this a article thats gonna have alot of degrees...im curious to see.

Edit: but i like God of War...

Ok...The PS3 Sucks, Two very average shooters that are only hyped by PS3 fans. Everyone knows its gonna blow. Ones riding on looks, the others riding on 60 player multi-player. By the way, none have the gameplay.

Fable 2 a sytem seller??? All that game does is destroy the name of Peter Molyneux, always a disappointment. It tries to reach for the stars but gets only as high as the toilet this game was made in. And Gears of War 2...The biggest piece of steroid garbage. With outdated graphics, a crappy meat model, and ass bad water physics that get out-trumped by Uncharted water any day of the week. Dont get me started on a million year old Too Human.

GoW3 almost certainly is going to be March 2009.

Too many of the 360 games aren't really exclusives:

Left 4 Dead
Splinter Cell Conviction
Alan Wake

will all be on PCs.

Gears of War 2
Fable 2
and most likely one of the Halo games will come later to PCs.

And Ninja Gaiden 2 will certainly have a PS3 Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma coming to the PS3 six months or so later. They already have their own PS3 engine written for the first Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Microsoft in 2008 is really showing their tremendous first party developer weakness. Nintendo has about 2-3 times as many studios and Sony has about 5 times as many as Microsoft.

on a serious note - Final Fantasy XIII & God of War III will not come out this year. Huge questions marks over the release dates of Infamous and The Agency. In saying that I also reckon Resistance 2 and LBP will be system sellers.

As for the games list. This basically confirms to me what i have been saying for a while. At least in my eyes ps3 has more titles worthy of my time. I still and probably will(by december, it will be 2yrs since i have had my 360 no rrod yet:)) have both consoles at least until the end of the yr. So i have the luxury of enjoying from both sides but its glad to know ps3 is stepping up to the plate.

The only reason why Gears 2 is going to be a system seller is because the 360 won't have a AAA shooter until November. Fable 2 is not a system seller since the people who were interested in these kind of games already bought the 360 for Oblivion or Mass Effect. Alan Wake would be considered more of a system seller.

Resistance 2 is actually written as a System Seller. They just forgot to add it in the first list.

LittleBigPlanet might be the biggest system seller of them all if you ask me. If the ball starts rolling and people see their friends playing it, it could be huge. I of course could be wrong.

Killzone 2 is also a system seller. The CG video probably sold some systems already. When the real thing hits some 360 fans (Who can't keep their hands off FPS) are going to pick up the silent black beast.

But as time goes on I think more and more people are going to get it and I think it will be a 'future' system seller. But I really don't think GeOW 2 will sell loads more copies than the first one sold unless they really include some beefy features that completely make GeOW 1 features seem like a free internet flash game. I mean gameplay features by the way.

I just have a feeling that most of the people who will buy it are ones who already own/played the first one with maybe a million or so added.

That is just straight up weak...also they can only do so much in the level designs of the game...remember they gots to fit this on a DVD9 disc. It will be the best Xbox 360 game though...and probably the only game to get for the Xbox 360...exclusive that is...this year.

But Resistance 2 will blow Gears of War 2 away...people keep knocking Killzone 2...but we all know it is gonna blow us away deep down in our hearts...Heck the online in MGS4 will blow GEARS of WAR 2 away...heck the online in GTA4 will blow GEARs of War 2 away..

Gears of War can never top that list. It's becoming the next Halo in terms of hype and overratedness. GoW didn't invent the friggin cover system. It wasn't even the first (recent) game to pull it off successfully. RS: Vegas was. And yet, all the fanboys compare every other shooter that has a cover system to Gears of War, ignoring the fact that the cover system is now practically a staple of the Shooter genre. That's basically like comparing Resistance to GoW because they both have guns.

Other than good use of the cover system, all it is is a pretty-looking shooter that only won widespread popularity because its fanbase of ex-Halo fanboys have never experienced anything as remotely tactical or logical as taking cover ever before in a video game.

And I bet you GoW2 will be more of the same, only with a few magic tricks like improved graphics to keep the kids entertained. Microsoft, with its preference for sales rather than innovation, won't change a thing if it wasn't badly broken in the first place (cough Halo3).

the withering of a piece of fruit, the degradation of a piece of wood after being subjected to the elements...all take place over a matter of time, etc.

all being done in real time by the console or PC's CPU and GPU.

the Playstation 3 (and i'm pretty positive the 360 also), are capable of producing 4D effects in game.

But I agree that most people that will buy it already have a 360 so I don't think it will be that dramatic.

I'm more interested in why they didn't put "SYSTEM SELLER" next to Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. Both of those games with blow Gears 2 away. Those two will sell more systems in my opinion.

First losing ground in their console sales. Now software sales and with all the great PS3 games coming out tempers are rising. Face it, it's only a matter of time before that spontaneously combusting console you have is finished. Don't worry though MS will make you spend more money on another that will just edge out the PS3. Of course by then with the understanding of the PS3 architecture the new space heater will just start competing a year or two after release when the even better PS4 hits.

The only game that's truly 360 only is Ninja Gaiden 2.

apart from fanboyism 360 is a nice console better thn xbox in terms of library...but everybody should respect the fact tht PS3 got diversity in games(exclusives)...It got games from different genra,some famous game studios and great franshises following up from PS2.but as far as 360 its mainly for shooters and XBL lovers.i dont c any AAA game aside the shooters on 360.M$ if want to survive they need to change the stratgy and go differnt direction....If 360 is really a must have console thn it would have dissimated PS3 by now,and would have easily passed the 25 mil fanbase which it acheived from xbox(in 4 years) in its 3rd year, yet we see blue victory ,NPD sales and no inspiring titles...if somebody wants to buy a console yet not a shooter fan what 360 has to offer him? M$ need to look in to tht...coz all shooter fan and diehard live lovers are already on their side.they need to convert PS2 owners now tht 120 mil fan base which sony seek to grab with their old franchises

I really think this would be a system seller maybe not. I really liked the ninja gaiden on xbox black though was meh and the one on the ps3 was not much fun for me but i had beaten it at least 6 times already. The only thing thats holds back sales in my opinion (which doesn't carry a lot of weight)is that most of its fans are in japan and it is a 360 exclusive but who knows maybe this will make sales rise in japan that would make it a system seller.
