PS3 and 360 are killing off PC gaming

Triston McIntyre of Gamer.Blorge.com writes:

"There's a dying breed in the gaming industry, and I'll have to beat you with a stick if you try to save it. PC gaming, which for a long time defined the cutting edge in game innovation and advancement, is nearly vanquished in the face of console games. Say goodbye to those gaudy cases and flashing lights; consoles are moving in!"

I actually only see a decline coming for the PC. As the ps4 and the xbox 3 come out there will be less and less of a reason to spend that money on a pc.

I was just about to post what you said. Having a foot in both worlds is the cause.

MSFT is doing everything they can to revive the market bringing the console/arcade style to PC trying to make PC more appealing.

How can the PC market compete with consoles when people want to play their games with company/socially in their homes on 40" to 60" HDTV's hooked up to sound systems, consoles are doing what PC is doing when it comes tp core appeal(Multi-player/deep RPG's like Mass Effect/FPS grag-fest.

When consoles let you surf the net, use a keyboard and mouse in EVERY game, and come with a fully upgradeable motherboard - then I will stop "PC" gaming.

Oh yeah! That is right! Console gaming is trying to mimic PC gaming! I wonder why that is? Oh yeah - PC gaming is still superior in almost every aspect. That is why.

Consoles try to mimic PCs for a reason people...

Json Henry, as much as your comments are normally good, this is one is really stupid. Console gaming is about diversity (well, for the PS3 at least). Can you imagine playing a fighting game, or a racing or football game with a mouse or keyboard?!

Console gaming for me is the best because it caters for all game types - simple as.

More and more people dont care about M+KB. I know I hate it. A controller is familiar and easy to use. No one want to have 100 buttons in front of them while they are playing. The only games I like M+KB is RTS games, but if they can implement the controller then that will be fine too.

The 360 is stealing more PC gamers than the PS3 is. Most PS3 owners were always console gamers. ALot of PC gamers I know's first console was the original Xbox. I have a crysis level PC, but my PS3 came first.

PS3 has mouse and keyboard support as well as mods (UT3) over 360, so I think PS3 would be more of a better choice for PC gamers.

The fact that one game that currently has mods on PS3 over the not yet released 360 version doesn't make his point moot. The Game didn't even sell that well.

He's right PC gamers are multi player centric.

xbox live i believe made the xbox console alot more attractive to PC gamers as well as having alot of good shooters. I do also believe the PS fans were inherited from the Sega and Nintendo console era's as well as new fans which could explain why the xbox/x360 fanbase is mostly hardcore.

Alot of people also came from Nintendo and the PS crowd and now are Xbox fans. Xbox base is actually made up of an healthy mix vs the other platforms that almost completly lack hardcore gamers.

Look I'm getting dissagree's from all my favorite followers. Shocking!!!, much of what I'v said is what others are yet I'm ahead in dissagree's lol.

Only the elite gamers with money can play the latest and greatest on PC. Everyone else plays the console...which is why it is more popular. If computer accessory prices ever come down, this could swing in the pc gamer's favor again

The price of PC peripherals is the main reason in the decline of PC gaming. PC gaming is very expensive. It entails yearly upgrade just to play those new PC games.

I was a console gamer first then I got my first PC game, C&C Red Alert, and I was hooked for life. I still play console games. I've got a PS3, a Wii, and a more than capable PC (It runs Crysis on high, not highest). You can complain all you like about PC's, but as long as there is a market and a community there will be games for us.

6 - What's been killing PC Gaming
has been Torrents and Pirated games.

I think developers are not making as much money as they would if everyone was buying their games so the titles we see out there today also suffer.

Sucks but it's true.

Besides the Home Consoles that can get the job done modestly, depending on the game. In the long run, Consoles are cheaper.(That's just FACT)

Consoles have slowly killed ARCADES as WELL with the debut of Online gaming. Now you can play against someone else without being next to them. (nothing beats a true outing at Arcades thuogh, but so few are left these days.)

7 - No PC gaming for me.....
I gave up on PC Gaming a few years ago. I was upgrading components every 6 months like clock work for several years. When the Xbox came out, that did it for me. No more PC gaming. Saved myself a ton of cash and never felt like I had to keep up with the Jones.

Psshhh this happens every time new consoles come out. When the consoles come out they are nearly on par (graphically) with PC's, then two years go by and the PC is leaps and bounds ahead in capability once again. Its an ongoing cycle thats been happening for two decades. Nothing new here.

9 - PC gaming only made up 14% of games sales in 2007
I only see this going lower as the cost of a PC to run the newer games with graphical glory is far more than a console with comparable graphics.

Sure, high-end PCs will alway have better graphical capability, but they will cost 3-4 times as much as the latest console. Furthermore, as more and more people get HDTV, the graphical difference between PC and console narrows even more.

My 360 and PS3 connected to my 50" 1080P HDTV look better than anything my PC can pump out on my puny 20" monitor. I have a decent PC too. Did I mention playing on a 50" TV over a small computer monitor. Yes, I can hook my PC to my TV, but to the average mainstream gamer this is too complicated for them.

I remember fondly my gaming days on the PC - but I'm afraid those will remain in the past. Consoles don't require latest driver updates, etc, etc. The average computer user knows nothing of keeping a PC updated to run the latest games.

For hardcore gamers, the PC will always reign supreme - too bad there will be very few games to play on it - unless you like MMOGs

9.1 - Completely agree...
But the PC still has a chance to make one more push - if the PC can reach the point where ray tracing and procedural generation of graphics is possible then it might enjoy a brief resurgence. But it will be brief - gaming on a large screen TV is the way to go.

the released numbers of computer game sales do not include digital distribution.

Not a valid argument in my mind. i do believe that digital distribution makes up for a huge chunk of computer gaming sales and to compare only retail sales is misconceiving to the public.

10 - For me it's a money issue
I use to be a diehard PC gamer but I was constantly spending too much money upgrading my hardware. Now I feel the money is better spent on 1080p displays and surround sound systems to play my 360 and PS3 on.

One shot price for a console vs constantly spending money to upgrade a PC. The only thing I miss about PC gaming is they are better at patching and upgrading games. This is still one area console are lacking.

COD4 (my favorite online game) still hasn't been fixed 3 months after release. That is so frustrating. How hard is it to patch a game to defer the host to the next available person instead of having to look for a new game when the host quits?

12 - PC gaming strengths
MMO
RTS
First person shooters

First person shooters are converting over to consoles very well now. If consoles can grab MMO's too, the PC gaming market will surely be hurting. RTS games will always belong to the PC market, unless they get the voice comand RTS games working good (End War).

I am sick of PC gaming with all its updates, system requirments, system errors, virus, gaming problems etc etc etc.Console is the way to go.It works everytime you put it in, no need to update or change your graphic cards, just plug and play on a big screen TV + sit in a comfortable sofa with a comfortable controller.

15 - PCs not Dead
Well PC gaming is probably still long off from dying. There's limits to consoles and to PCs. Given that the PC gaming industry is just pushing things to require more hardware as it comes out (Ie Crysis and Oblivion when it came out) they've lost sight of hardware reqirements.

I don't entirely need my games to be flashy, but just functional without more of an investment. Some games won't work as well on a console as they would on a PC (Games like Civilization, RTS's in general, and Modding), but things like loading time and the sizes of games is getting out of hand.

The source engine are a testament to 'KISS' (aka Keep it simple stupid). All and all developers should take a gander at both sides of the isle and learn from each other in terms of balancing advantages and drawbacks.

I'm still a PC and console gamer; tbh, PC is not dying, everyone says this all the time. WoW, CSS and CS 1.6 etc are very popular games which are still going strong.

I think people have been saying the same thing over and over again but PC gaming will not die.

The main reason I'm a console gamer is that it's just easier; no checking specs, making sure everything is going to be fast enough, upgrading components every couple years... you just buy the software and go home to play it.
The constant game of making sure your computer is up to the task of playing the latest titles got old, and especially now that so many of the big games are available on both the PC and consoles, it just doesn't give me enough of a reason to keep playing on the PC. It used to be for the best multiplayer, graphics and general experience, you needed a PC. Anymore that's just not true, consoles have taken a lot of what made computer gaming great and brought it to the living room.

I am a pc gamer and always said a pc is far superior than a console. I have a Playstation that is now filling with dust.

I enjoyed some exclusive titles on the Playstion like Gran Turismo, Tekken and other games. But consoles never did everything a pc could, like play games with a mouse and keyboard. Games like Red Alert was just nicer to play on pc. On my pc today I still play great games like Crysis and others (Because I love the eye-candy). I also enjoy divx movies on my pc that consoles never could play.

But with that said I missed out on great console exclusive games like God of war, latest Tekken, Gran Turismo and many, many others.

Times have changed now I can play games with a mouse and keyboard on a console. Enjoy great Graphics, although pc Graphics will always be superior to console graphics. I can now also play divx movies on consoles (PS3). I can connect to the internet with a console.

Consoles is only getting better and better. They are easier to use than a pc although to a pc gamer it is just as easy. Consoles is cheaper in the short and long term. They have lots of games that never see the pc. This is why pc gaming is dying a sad slow death.

I still believe a computers is superior to a console, but the gap has closed when it comes to gaming. I will always enjoy pc gaming but I will be getting myself a console (PS3) in the near future.

World of Warcraft says otherwise.

Yes, PC gaming isn't as popular as it was just a few years ago, but it isn't going to be killed off by consoles any time soon. Some things--like RTS and certain RPGs--are best suited for the PC...unless consoles figure out how to do them as well, or better.

well i still play my PC to play all the 360 exclusives so i dont have to spend money on one and i occasianally play some random MMO games like Gunz or Flyff or some random crap like that

but il never choose to play a game on PC if i can play it on my PS3 because playing on your console is a much more enjoyable and relaxing (depending on what game) experience. Consoles may be limited in hardware (well they used to be anyway until the PS3 came a-knocking), but they do make playing games easy and much more enjoyable. You don't have to bother with system specs or hardware upgrades (or OC'ing your hardware for that matter) and consoles connect you with your community via the PSN or XBL to make gaming a more connected and mainstream experience

whatever i am tired and i feel that my last paragraph was utter bollocks and barely made sense so the bottom line is- consoles make gaming more mainstream and they are the future, PC gaming wont die, but it will never be such an integral part of gaming in general as they used to be

The biggest problem with PC gaming is that you have to upgrade you PC at least onces a year, in order to play they news PC games at MAX setting. While on a console such as the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360, you don't have to upgrade it for at lest 5 years. The reason why 5 years, is because then when a new console is release. Plus a lot of PC games are pirated software such as torrent, and limewire.

PC gaming is FARRRRRRR from over. Just look at the amount of steam servers and people playing steam games, more then console games? Thought so, also the modding community is HUGE, and will always keep the game new and fresh.
Whoever says PC gaming is dead has their head stuck in the sand.
