Xbox LIVE Server Problems Cause Achievements To Disappear

your achievements will not go...it is all store on the hard drive...if anything happens to the severs and they fix it then you can upload it again...(it is more like just loging into xbox live)

Okay am I wrong or was Live the best online service until recently? I have lots of respect for Live but all i'm seeing are stories about live problems. What the hell is going on?

The problems is that so many people joined xbox live over the recent holidays that wasn't expected. They got slammed with too many requests at once and it started getting bad. It wasn't until Christmas morning when everyone got their 360's and live service.

While it hasn't been perfect since Christmas, it is still fully functional. Online gaming is lag free, voice chat is clear. It was bad for a few days where you couldn't do hardly anything, but it was only a few days and is expected after the holidays. Any network getting that many people signing up, logging on, and hammering servers at once will cause a negative effect.

The only problem that still lingers is the messanger, which is only used to chat with PC MSN clients (not other gamers). But this isn't a big deal anyway.

Most of the reviews and "news stories" are just Sony Fanboys making a mountain out of an anthill (over dramatizing it).

I just got done playing 3 hours of Halo 3 online and voice chatting. I didn't have a single problem and everyone had good signal.

until u go online with the console. once u sign in, it goes through xbox live, i know this for a fact because i had my hard drive wiped and then recovered my gamertag from xbox live and had all my achievements still

People that have a core 360 cannot get Achievments. As the core has no HDD it obviously cannot store achievments, unless, like email this info is stored on the Microsoft servers.

Logical thinking says that achievments are stored on the 360. But the fact that there are 360's with no HDD say this cannot be true.

On your HDD, I'm pretty sure. Downloaded game saves get you achievements, and before i had signed up for live i still had achievements.

No, it's not kept on the hard drive. You can get achievements from game saves because the save shows you got so many kills or whatever is required to get the achievement, then getting one more kill gets you the achievement. The actual status of your achievements is kept on Microsoft's servers, which is why you can see you and your friends' status on xbox.com.

Well of course you can get achievements when you're not online. I'm not saying you have to be on Live to get achievements. I'm saying that the Xbox Live servers keep track of your achievements and whatnot. How else could you recover your gamertag on someone else's 360? It's all stored on the servers. Obviously your game data is stored on the hard drive, and that's what the achievement system checks to unlock achievements for you. If, however, your achievement doesn't get uploaded and registered on the servers, when you log into Live it's going to think you don't have it and therefore take it away from you. That's why unlocking another achievement will re-register the previous one that got lost - it's scanning the data on your hard drive, and then it finds that you SHOULD have that achievement, but you don't, so it gives it to you. That's how the achievement system works. If he wasn't online when it happened, he would probably still have it. The servers screwed it up by not properly registering the data.

Its actually entirely the opposite to how you describe it. The golden "source" for the achievements attached to your gamer profile are local to the console (whether that is on the hdd or in some other local memory i dont know). Its pretty obvious this is the case, as otherwise it wouldnt be possible to unlock achievements while offline, then have your online profile updated when you connect to live. I personally have had a number of problems with my broadband connection, resulting in playing a lot of games (and unlocking achievements) while offline, but when i log in to live, my profile is updated with my newest unlocked achievements and gamer score.

The fact that the live servers are missing your achievement is irrellevant as it would update the next time you connect to the service. The only reason i can think of peoples online and offline profiles being out of sync is if that update is selective - i.e. only update those games that have a change in the number of unlocked achievements since the last time you logged in.

This is of course speculation on my part but makes far more sense as it does not therefore preclude those without consoles constantly connected to live functioning as they should.

Question: Wouldn't the loss of Achievements also remove the accumulation of gamerscore points? It didn't say in the article that specific points were lost (if it actually did then I am basically overlooking that detail).

Also, isn't it usually company procedure to...oh I don't know...warn everyone before you go and start rolling back server information? I mean...they -had- to know that it was going to mess with peoples scores right?

Yeah I know. I really don't understand how this type of thing could happen though. I understand just having server issues, but alot is being effected in these "reported" issues. RROD doesn't happen to everyone either, but it shouldn't happen to begin with. With that being said, I still think this could possibly be a bit overblown. But even so, when you're being charged anything, even the price of one game a year, then you're still required to meet certain standards. None the less, as far as xbox live is concerned. I think it is still worth the money (60 dollars a year)It's not bad at all if you think about it. But i'm not going to say that we xbox users don't deserve some sort of compensation for the amount of time we have paid for and we haven't been able to play. A downloadable game isn't my idea of compensation either. I'm thinking a month of xbox live for free or a downloadable game. You should have your choice. As for me xbox live has been down for a solid month. It started december 3 of 2007, and wasn't fixed until shortly after January 3rd of 2008, (i had it marked on my calender) Thats the reason i beleive that you should be compensated for a month. More than worth the HUGE AMOUNT of $4 a month I pay.

I have experienced lag on XBL over the last two years a total of about, ummm, twice. And each time was for about 4 seconds. However, I did sit last night and try with no success for 20 minutes to get into a online multiplayer game of Motorstorm till I got so pissed off I just gave up. So feed your crap to someone without a clue.

Get over yourselves. Maybe someday you should actually try LIVE rather than pi$$ and moan about something many of you fanboys have never touched in your lives.

It is funny because up until christmas i was playing mad halo 3 online and live problems would have bugged me but then mass effect showed up :-D That game has swollowed my soul, it is fantastic. I have been logging into live properly though since the live problems stated showing up in the news so maybe i am just one of the lucky users :-)

I got all the achievements in Halo 3 right before the fall update. After the update, I went to compare my Halo 3 achievements with my friend. To my surprise It said I had 990 points in it even though I had the Katana and everything. I checked Bungie.net too and it said I had all the achievements as well. Turns out it said I had 990 points but only in the compare screen. My overall gamerscore wasn't affected and when you go in and look it says 1000. Pretty weird and I think it fixed self over the past few months.

click on friends list - check ur friends list, invite them to a game or a private chat, compare games, see where their at in a game, compare achievements, u can also check up on like the last 50 players youve played with in any online game. u can also check the friends on other people on these lists whether or not their ur friend, if their trying to invite one of their friends but cant (which sometimes happens), u can go to their friends list and send them an invite

go on msn messenger but its a simplified version. since theres no browser its kinda just a plain text message thing, and if u dont have the little keypad add-on, its a b*tch to use.

u can setup ur profile, edit ur motto, playstyle from familty type to a more hardcore "underground" way to play and online matches set u up with people of similar preferences and u can write a little bio about urself. profile settings also lets u block certain things like people looking at ur bio, friends list and stuff.

u can also play music directly from here for any game you play, even tho that doesnt have anything to do with live, its still an awesome feature for the guide. another thing is u can customize the look of the guide and background of the dashboard here also.

^those can be done with one button press which really makes things easier and besides online play, the rest of live is pretty much the marketplace. game demos/videos, arcade games, trailers, tv shows, movies, etc.

I think you just need to use both to see for yourself. PSN is fine but it feels very unfinished. Live has a much more polished interface, it's way easier to navigate through and has a great deal more content. Hopefully Home will catch them up a bit.

...you can't get your GamerTag back because Live is down. So there may be some truth to this... but (IMO) it's really more about the people not understanding their consoles. People are proly trying to play their games, having unsuccessfully tried recovering their Tag from Live when it's having issues...and expecting the saves and achievements to carry over. They won't.

When Live is down, sometimes you can't recover your tag. If you try and it doesn't work, your Tag goes into CyberLimbo. This sux big time cuz now you have to recover it from Limbo on a broken LIVE. If you don't have your tag, you can't access your HDD which still houses all your gamesaves and achievement info. Because you don't have access to your HDD, you also cannot save progress or achievements.

*HELLO M$ > this should be a priority fix when Live goes down cuz it's a far larger inconvenience than no MP.

This happened to me on the worst of the LiveIsDown weekends, but if this is happening when they actually have thier Tags, then, yeah something is rotten in the state o' Denmark... and M$ needs to address it.

Your achievments are NOT stored on your hard drive. They are stored on Xbox Live servers. The info is not garbage... it's just fanboys denying the fact that Live has become...well... unreliable. I own a 360. So this is kind of pissing me off.

The achievements system is something that most XBOX slaves love to hang their hat on. Now with their head held low, Dark Sniper would like to once again issue out harsh criticisms towards the former #1 online service known as XBOX Live.

Microsoft has issued out achievements for nothing more than a subliminal ploy to make gamers think they have longevity to most of the garbage games on their platform. A true achievements system will ensure gamers are compensated with their hard work with an incentive plan for each achievement through the online store. Dark Sniper thinks it would be nice if Microsoft offered 200 Microsoft points for reaching some achievements. Thankfully, Sony solves these very issues through the Playstation Network and HOME.

Once again, XBOX Live is nothing more than a skewed online service with immature and irrational members. For a yearly fee, you're guranteed for your online experience to have steady lag, constant server maintenance, blackouts, and information deleted. Now that's shoody service.

Acheivements dont disappear. They are stored on your hard drive...when you log back into live it will update your score if you have unlocked something while offline. This article was written by an un-informed tool who just wanted to put something up for all the Fanboys to go screamin back and forth at one-another and give him some hits on the site during a slow gaming news day.

And just to punctuate that...the very last part of the article after his insanely LONG rant...

I'm very surprised that I've seen very few complaints regarding all the glitched achievements in GH3. Most of the co-op career achievements are only unlocked by the player who created the band. Soooooooo pissed when, after many a lunch break, a buddy and I had gone thru and 5 starr'ed all the songs on easy only to find out we have to do it all again for the other player... same with getting Wizard and Backup achievements.

Well... guess that was a rant. But I'm not sorry ;)

It gets old hearing about the "lag free PSN" compared to the "laggy asss Live"... Umm, you people do forget one BIG thing. PSN has what like 2 mil people on whilst the 360/live have like over 10 mil. Yeaaa, for 10 million people playing on Live and I hardly EVER get lag, than that's pretty damnn good..

But, the problems right now are getting annoying and needs to be fixed, however, I still haven't run into any major problems.

For everyone who says XBOX LIVE is fixed and has no issues your full of it. From a owner of PS3 and XBOX 360 who has COD4 on both systems... PS3's online is far superior at this moment in time! I got on LIVE last night and waited 10-20 minutes to find a match and even when I do, trying to get your buddys in the same game makes it even harder because someone always seems to get dropped. Some of my friends cant even start the match because some of us can't even connect to the host. Take it from someone who has compared both Live and PS3's online gameplay through a microscope. I have friends on both systems therefore I have games for each system. Comparing COD4 on both systems online gameplay I have found PS3's to be far less of the frustration. Plus I don't have to hear kids ranting and making fools of themselfs as much on the PS3 because it seems there is an age gap between the two systems. I would tie that to the $$$price$$$ gap between the two consoles. Another thing is I live on the West coast. Live seems to get better at night here (worse durring the day )and I assume the reason is because far less people are online at that time.

My brother is a heavy user of Xbox LIVE, but he's not so much a hardcore gamer as in he cares about the console war and such. He called me to see if I could help him since he knows I'm into all this. Given that I'm tired of my Xbox 360, I didn't know if I would have issues since I ceased using it after having to send my Xbox for the thirdtime to Microsoft's sh1tty repair center. It seems that the lame sh1tty service which I'm still paying for detects the gamertags whenever it feels like it. I haven't even bothered into watching if my achievements are still there.

Microsoft is pretty much done with, I don't care for a few frame rate problems on the initial batch of games.

Achievements aren't stored on your HDD. I've had to replace my HDD two times already (HDD failure, Microsoft can't even do proprietary HDDs right), and guess what? I still have my achievements. Well, I had, I don't know right now, as my Xbox 360 has been collecting dust since the last time it RRODed out on me.

Achievements are NOT stored on your hard drive. What is wrong with you people? Do you not read? I provided a link above which states, on Xbox's own site, that achievements are stored on Xbox Live. Ergo, it is stored on their servers. It's simple. Read and comprehend. You learn this in first grade. You fanboys are rediculous. You perpetually make false claimes without providing fact - which is why most of you sound rediculous. Again, search Google, and read up on it. It states on their site that it is stored on Xbox Live... not on your hard drive. If that were the case, then I wouldn't be able to see my achievements on a friends 360 with my username (which I can do).

If you haven't noticed, you're unable to unlock achievements unless you're connected to Xbox Live. Which is another flaw that the Live service has. That means that if you're not connected to the internet and have beat a game, you're going to have to go through it again - while connected to the internet - in order to unlock it's achievements.
