Are ps3 games really washed out compared to xbox 360?

it's about time someone has proven that gametrailers.com videos use an inferior setting on the ps3 which makes the colors look worse when compared side by side to xbox 360.

over and over we have seen these videos on every multiplat game and it makes me sick. they have the where-withall to record both games side by side with that moving bar in the middle, but cannot adjust the ps3 settings to make a fair comparison.

i own both consoles, and i will not be using gametrailers.com videos for any decisions on what version to buy, there are many other sites out there. do not trust news from n4g either, its always biased one way or the other.

i have a 360 with halo 3, dead rising, lost planet, and gears, xbl gold member. im a captain in halo 3 which is a great game.

i also have a ps3 with warhawk, r&c, oblivion, rb6 vegas, high velocity bowling (awesome game), pain, among others. i plan on getting uncharted for xmas (the demo is awesome!!). i find myself playing the 360 for fps and ps3 for everything else.

you all do know that this video is a fake. The video of assassin's creed is the comparison video, the part where he is like limited and full comparisons is just stamped over the 360 and ps3 signs. i remember how the video comparison went, and how it wasn't entirely synced at some parts. These are the exact same parts.

I'm not saying that by changing these settings that (your TV has to support) are not going to make a difference, but just that the video he has running of AC is fake.

for limited and Full, is because some older HDMI enabled TV's cannot handle the full RGB range (have 16-255 instead of 0-255). If you set Full RGB on a set that doeant support full RGB it will look too dark.

The original page for testing has been pulled off Gameswank, but it originally let you download a greyscale chart that you could view on your tv through the PS3. With Full RGB on and adjustment to brightness you should be able to see most of not all the boxes to deterimne wether your TV supports Full. I tested it and My TV works well, and looks fabulous with this set on.

When I look at Gametrailers comparisons, first I laugh at the piss poor encoding quality, even the HD streams look SH!T secondly I wonder if they even USE HDMI on PS3. It looks like they are using Component.

Your HDTV has to support it in the first place. On my tv, full range makes it too dark, so I stick with limited and fiddle with the brightness settings in the game itself.

I had the same problem with my 360 hooked up with a VGA cable, everything was dull/washed-out. A system update added 3 reference levels:
Standard [same as Limited]
Intermediate
Expanded [same as Full]

By default the visuals are washed out. This video is suggesting you modify the options on the PS3 versions in order to keep pace with the Xbox 360 versions.

GameTrailers isn't trying to run a scam or anything (or some cases, they must be paid off by Microsoft, right Sony fans?). When GT does a video comparison, both games are run on their default settings.

So yes, by default, PS3 games tend to look washed out compared to Xbox 360 games (multiplatform titles). It's no secret.

That is called tweaking your setting to get the best from it.

If I follow your logic, I should have left my Sammy HDTV on the factory settings which most call TORCH MODE since the default brightness, contrast and color looks like utter $hit.

That is why they give you differnt modes, color options, brightness options, contrast options .... for tweaking.

With these setting you get what you want. My TV after I tweaked/adjusted it, looks 1000x times better than out of the box.

I see what you mean with the "DEFAULT" settings, but they should have the same person tweak both consoles to get the best visuals from them and then compare. This shows the TRUE capability of your gear.

that is untrue. Previously on the 360, VGA(and in some cases HDMI) was almost always washed out(it was stated in comparisons from IGN as well). MS fixed it last May with the ability to choose reference levels. Every single comparison from GT has the PS3 version washed out and this is the reason for that.

I'm a sony fan, but being "washed out" isn't the only problem with PS3 multi-platform games. PS3 versions also usually have worse textures and aliasing. A good example of this is COD4. COD4 was supposed to look identical on both systems according to infinity ward, but after seeing both on the same TV, it is obvious that the PS3 version's textures are much, much worse. The aliasing is also much worse. I hope developers eventually get used to the PS3, because this is not good.

I've seen that comparison video before and it proves nothing. I've also heard the talking points from infinity ward and they are liers. You have to see them on the same TV with the same settings. They are definitely not identical. Of course it isn't that big of a deal, but the textures really suffer on the PS3. Also the aliasing. Believe in me, for I speak not but the truth in all things.

Uhh....you're going a little over my head there. I don't know much about tech stuff. My TV is only a 32 inch sony bravia, and it only goes to 720p. Also, I have component cables and not HDMI. But if you only own a PS3 then by all means get COD4, it still looks good on the PS3, just not as good, and its still a great game. But if you own both a 360 and a PS3 then for the love of Buddha, get the 360 version.

someone on neogaf put up a post with mouse-overs of COD4 b/t PS3 and 360. For the most part they were identical, but on a few of them, the 360 definitely had better textures. I'd post the link but it no worky anymore.

i.e. the car ride sequence, the texture on the driver's hat, the dashboard/gages, headrests, etc. Everything was much more crisp in the 360 version.

Now, flame me if you want, but this is because of streaming texture assets (in game sequence) and is due to the seperate memory pools on PS3. SO, in some of the "sequence" portions of the game like car ride and the stage where your in the back of the truck, 360 pulls ahead on textures due to better access to memory.

However, it is up for debate but the PS3 version may have better AF..

Lost oddysey is something that is not impressive at all, yes, mass effect has incredible character models, but Forza 2's cars have less than 100,000 polygons each....the cars in Gran Turismo 5 have over 200,000 each ( http://www.psu.com/Gran-Tur... )....at 1080p ( true 1080p, not 720p scaled up like the 360 is famous for) and 60 fps....with up to 16 of them on the track at once...(go to bottom of the first page of that article to see about the multiplayer)

By the way, UNcharted, Drake's fortune is an amazing action adventure title, and for you to knock it is retarded. Have you played it?

The game uses the most advanced water effects ever put into a game....(sorry.....unreal engine [gears of war] doesn't put world reflections into its water, let alone wave reflection and light refraction)

Also, there are so many advanced and layered animations processed every second in Uncharted, that it simply wouldn't have been possible (at least at the same performance levels) on any other processor.

ALso, how about subsurface scattering? Do you know what that is? How about global illumination?

There are so many advanced effects that haven't even been tried in a 360 game yet...

Now the reason limited is there is for various reasons. Remember, the PS3 is also a multimedia hub. Not all media files look the same. You might have too much of this and too much of that. Hence, the RGB subject has two options, full and limited.

The colours displayed by the ATI chip seem a little 'deeper' if you will.
And I'm not talking about contrast, or brightness.

Now before you flame me I am a ps3 owner. I don't have a 360, nor do I want one.
But the black and colour intensity is just not quite perfect on the ps3 chip as it is on the 360. This is the same problem the xbox 1 had last gen. Yeah, it had better res etc than the ps2, but the blacks and the colours looked like sh1t compared to the ps2. Next time around Microsoft dumped Nvidia and whent with ATI.
The only thing I find fault with my ps3 is Sony's choice of chip manufacturer. Colours are a little, and I mean a little 'washed' out.

It's all apples and oranges when a game is running. But I have been gaming since the beginning, and being a fussy b4stard I notice these things.
Having said that, the PS3 is a far better console than the 360.

Yes, both look very similar for most games, but I have seen way too many games on the PS3 that look dumbed down from the 360 version, washed out or not. And yes, Gears of War is the best looking game on any console right now, period. Mass Effect may be a close second.

When making the comp between games why people put to much into the whole washed out thing or one being a little darker. You can play with the settings on your tv and your system to get them looking lighter or bright or darker or whatever. When looking at games to see which one you should get(if you have 2 systems like me lol) all you really need to know is if you can see a diffrence while looking at the 2 stright away Im not talking about still shots or having to study a video clip for hours to notice a little somthing. Which game runs smoother frame rate and loading times and finaly if one game has more content than the other. Now theres no dought that games do have diffrences on both consoles some are very small(only fanboys would argue) while others are big. If you have both systems get the one wich suits you if you have one then you dont have a choice and just sit back and enjoy the game. Good gaming

I honestly dont understand the point of this article. I own both consoles and not once have cared in the slightest about slight graphical differences between platforms - its the playing experience that is key (when the differences are big, it effects the experience. If they are small, it doesnt. Period). Its only the real technophiles (respect) and the fanboys (may you die of gonnorrohea and rot in hell) that actually give a damn. Who cares if uncharted looks better than Gears of war or not? Does it matter? If you like both games, great. If you dont, fine.

Drakes Fortune for ps3 outdoes anything on console graphically so far. And yes that includes,bioshock,gears,heaven ly sword,to name a few.

But as none of the 360 team have played uncharted, you wouldn't know that, what closed minds you guys have.

At least i can admit to playing and enjoying gears,bioshock, and still think they look great.

since i bought my PS3 in February of this year, and when they became available in firmware updates, so i hadn't been having this issue, which is why i was always confused with the comparison videos i'd see.

a few weeks ago, i was playing around with the RGB and Super White settings, and it really is a big difference.

especially if you do it with a game like Uncharted, which is very colorful. even *THAT looked washed out significantly with the settings turned to Limited and Off.

i tried it with Assassin's Creed also, and the effect was the same: with the settings off, the games looked washed out. with the settings on, they look like they're supposed to.

i don't understand this notion to ignore things like the display options on your TV and gaming consoles.

when i first bought my PS3 and hooked it up to my crappy 20inch SDTV, i played around with the settings. then, when i picked up my 40inch 720p LCD Samsung a few months later, i spent a good twenty minutes or so tweaking the settings on my TV, *AND my Playstation 3 until i was happy with the results. i haven't been disappointed. movies and games have looked fantastic on my TV.

all this spreading of false information and FUD need to stop. seriously, now. it's getting ridiculous.

Most people don't even have their TVs adjusted properly in general, so I doubt the average person is going to notice any "problems" with what their PS3 is displaying when it comes to color/contrast.

Turn the RGB to Full, unless your playing a dark game. Thats the problem with the 360 though, yes it comes defaulted to already play games darker, but if your playing through a dark area in a game sometimes its too dark to see everything. At least with the PS3 you can change the settings - Full on non dark games, Limited on dark games. Plus it has to do with the lighting in the game and how advanced it is. Check out these pics, notice the very high settings look a little more washed out because it's trying to make the lighting more natural.

but.. alot of games today are being made from scrach 2 the 360.. and the PS3 gets a port .. if the port is good (Oblivion, COD4) it will look the same .. but in most cases it dosnt, and that has NOTHING to do with the consoles, sry 2 say..

Look at Burnout, The PS3 has better lighting (because it was made from scrach for the PS3 and the xbox360 got a port?)

The reason Sony has these options are for people who has 1080i TVs without HDMI but DVI..... I have to do the opposite, becuase I am using DVI-HDMI on my Samsung CRT 37" 1080i..Now I can be wrong..but those options benifit you only if you useing HDMI-HDMI.

-So if your TV has HDMI 1080p you can adjusted your setting

It does, because they do have their settings wrong. Right away when I saw their videos I knew they didn't have full rgb settings on. I clearly see a difference on my screen with it on and off. When it is off it does look a bit washed out but when on it looks great.

And by the way your wrong about Assasins Creed and COD4 are not PORTS, they were both programed or each console from the ground up. But just because it's programed from the ground up, it still needs to be done right - COD4.

Get Uncharted. It's a standard Adventure game lenght (10-15 hrs) and you'll probably want to get all the collectables to unlock other features. It's an amazing game and deserves more sales than it's getting.

the xbox360 has the best games offered on the console. it provides you with a realistic feel when you're playing shooting games as you press the triggers. and to top it off, it has the best online service compared to PSN. recently, PS3 officials have been begging to get some of the 360 exclusive titles, but we have never seen the 360 officials attempt to get a PS3 game on the 360. the PS3 is losing the console war along with the wii, and since both of their debuts, neither has really stepped up the competition against the 360 videogame wise. so what if the wii continues to sell well, but where are the games, which is the most important key for the console. as for the PS3, who cares if it's been having a successful month or two, it still lacks the games that the hardcore gamers seek. its not Microsoft's fault for being ahead of the competition when they released the 360 a year earlier, but every console must be prepared efficiently for the next gen and not struggle after the console is for retail. it seems that the PS3 has some pretty good games coming out next year, but none of them carry enough value for it to last long enough for the console, unlike what halo series did for the 360 and the same with super smash brothers with the gamecube. and the big problem with the PS3 was that how in the world was the average gamer even going to purchase a game when the console was around $500-$600. it's not hard for the PS3 exclusive developers to learn from halo, gears of war, mass effect, etc., so that they could apply the same type of content for their games.

gives it more color, the super white thing affects the white and blacks i think. All I know is I notice a big difference, add HDMI to that and it does look awesome. It makes everything look a lot sharper and the colors are way better.

I think the limited is set to default because most people haven't upgraded to HD TVs
