Wii overtakes Xbox 360, becomes fastest selling console ever made

According to the report, total Wii units sold stand at 10.6 million, slightly more than the Xbox 360's estimated 10.5 million. Since its release, the Wii has outsold 360 by a margin of more than 2 to 1.

The truth is that neither point is valid; the PS3 and 360 wouldn't be that cheap and keep their attractive graphics and the Wii wouldn't have HD graphics and keep its attractive price point.

At E32007 Microsoft announced that they were selling slightly less than the Wii since the Wii's launch and selling 2 to 1 over the Ps3 since its launch.....But the most impressive stat of all was that the xbox 360 has sold more games than the Wii and the Ps3 combined since their launches.....WOW....

Well, that's not really the point of the article.

But hey, that's OK, I think most of the people understand. There's a kind of silent oath on N4G that as long as people keep dissing the Wii its sales are invalid.

You and I both know that the Wii's attach rate is probably low because of all of the non-gamers that have picked it up and just can't get enough of Wii Sports. I say that if the 360 or PS3 had been so non-gamer friendly then you'd see very much the same story.

No one reports it, though, so you have to calculate it for yourself, and that means using different times, most likely, so you can't get an exact answer, but it should be in that area according to the numbers I saw.

I used numbers from wikipedia and vgchartz, so accorting to MS and sony fanboys, the attach rate is actually higher.

That's a choice :) you don't have to buy it if you don't like the games...I'm guessing the casual crowd doesn't mind it only having one purpose, as the hardcore nintendo fans get their franchises, as well as the 3rd parties get a piece of the install base.

This probably isn't the best way to describe if you'd like the system or not. But if you've play Singstar, Eye toy, Buzz, are into a lot of the party games that where on the PS2(mini games, Olympic games etc etc). Or anything that has quirky controls that worked real well, like on the DS, Eye toy. Then I would defiantly recommend it. Thats why I got a Wii, because I knew heaps of games like that would be coming out for it.

Oh yeah and its quite a social console, so if you play a lot of games by yourself you probably won't enjoy it much.

It's gonna be a hot commodity this Christmas(as if it isn't already), and I wouldn't be surprised to see the user base in the neighborhood of 14-16 million by the years end. Amazing how the momentum has not stopped or reached it's peak just yet. We're all saying how well the PS3 and 360 will do after price drops...imagine what happens when this thing hits $175.00.

I think a Wii price drop is a long way off. The thing holding back sales now is production. By the time supply starts meeting/exceeding demand it'll probably still be the least expensive new system so they won't need to play the price-point card just yet. I could see it at $199 by holiday 2009.

The other possibility is that the hype will die down, sales will slow and they'll have to cut it to motivate them. I just think the Wii "fad" will last well into next year.

I however believe that people will move on from the wii as it's essentially a gamecube with a new controller. The online play still sucks the big one, which is something that should have been ready before launch. the "mii's" got lame pretty damn quick. I think
most will likely get a 360 and ps3 shortly after. most people I know with a wii are already bored of it, and plan on getting 1 of the 2 consoles this xmas.

I was planning on getting a wii, but I think i'm gonna pass, my money will be better spent on rock band and guitar hero 3.

sheesh - sounds like the Wii may not be the console for you. The only Wii game I have any interest in at the moment is Zelda, but it's just not enough for me. We'll probably pick up a Wii eventually, but for the moment I hardly have enough time to play all the PS3 and 360 games I want to - which will only be more so in the next few months.

Anyway - they do need to bring it with the games. They've talked about more/better 3rd party titles, but I haven't seen or heard anything that makes me believe it.

I think, if they can get enough Wii's shipped, Nintendo shouldn't have too much trouble surpassing the 360 in total units sold. 360 has Halo 3 coming which should move some units, Nintendo had several of it's big IPs on the way - so who knows how their respective paces will be affected by that. One thing that's certain is that the Wii has been selling a lot faster so unless that changes it's going to be in the lead fairly soon.

Honestly at this point I still hold my opinion that the Wii is a gimmick console. All it offers is a fun diversion for when you have a group of friends over and want to play some mini games or Mario Party type games.

People are going to realize that the Wii isn't going to be offering many deep gaming experiences like the other consoles can. Sure it had Zelda, but you could have played that on Gamecube...since then though the Wii hasn't offered much in deep gaming. And we will never really see games like BioShock or Oblivion on the Wii.

Wii's are selling fast because they are cheap and a unique diversion. But once the whole gimmick wears off, I think people will go buy a 360 or PS3.

but dude- that is the entire point of the Wii - it in general offers no depth to it - it is pick up and play for a while and leave it be, that's how it has got the non gamer crowd - that and a controller that does not look as intimidating as the generic two stick gamer pad. It is a combination of those things tht makes the wii appealing - while I will say that maybe some of the players of the wii will then move up to a 360/ps3, the majority will be happy with the pick up and play for five minutes type games - they have no desire to get into the more intense side of gaming.

And once that wiifit thing is released, I think the Wii will be even more in demand from the casual gamer crowd - all those alpha moms queing up for it - I can honstly see it now.

Nintendo Rules they would be my number one choice if it weren't for the console being so weak still have much respect for them, grew up on NINTENDO. The public/casual gamers see Wii as some virtual reality state of the art tech with a price cheaper than what consoles were at launch 2 generations ago who can compete. this console war is getting weirder and weirder by the minute . who would have thougth the king of last gen will trail in third place whilst nintendo's underdog shoots like a skyrocket ? I still support the ps3, but hey, competition is good for us gamers right? without xbox live, ps3 would probably never have gotten HOME for instance. So let them battle it out to the death while we watch with an xxl sized popcorn. ps...since nintendo has broken the rules of the console war (last gen graphics, amazing gameplay, wonderful execution and publicity), i do not rule out a nintendo zii launching before the 5-6 year cycle with graphics that will shame both of this gen's behemoths. I've said this before and I'll say it again. I don't believe the wii competes directly with the 360, or at least not yet. No serious gamer looking for a 360 will settle for the wii, and not many casual or first-time gamers drawn to the wii's simplicity will immediately warm up to the more intimidating 360. Each machine offers a vastly different gaming experience, and thus caters to a different market. Based on my own personal experience, they complement, instead of supplant each other. The wii's success may even help the 360 (and the PS3) in the long term because it will serve to introduce a whole bunch of people to electronic gaming and make them comfortable with the technology. This may allow many novice gamers to later "graduate" to the more hardcore machinery of the 360/PS3. The wii's success should be good news for the entire gaming industry.

I've been on the Leipzig Games Convention yesterday on the press-day and what I saw was all launch games and stuff we already know...

WiiSports, boxing, tennis, that was about what Nintendo showed.

I really don't see it as a serious console anymore. Although not for real gamers. Nintendo has sold themselves to a new targetaudience, which obvioulsy have fun with it, but thats about it.

Wii is a massive success, there is no doubt about that. It's not a fad. If it is a fad, then I bet Microsoft and Sony wished their consoles were "fads" if it would sell as much. The Wii is the fastest console ever. It has been selling like hotcakes since it was released in 2006. Nintendo can't keep up with demand.

Just face reality folks, Nintendo won this round. There is nothing that is going to slow down the Wii's momentum. To this day it is still difficult to find Wiis on store shelves. I go to my local Gamespot and the workers there tell me that dozens of people call in every day asking if they have a Wii. And the Wii was released almost a year ago!

And I wouldn't even consider the Wii "Next Generation". I consider it "NEW generation". It offers a new, fresh, innovative kind of gaming experience you can't find anywhere else

Admittedly, many of the Wii's third party games do suck. Many of them are ports with tacked on controls. But all that will change by 2008. Most third party developers were caught by surprise with Wii's runaway success and it wasn't reported around April that many developers have shifted resources to develop for the Wii (Capcom, EA, Namco Bandai, Sega, Square/Enix, Midway etc.). Since it takes about 10 - 18 months to develop a game. I don't expect many good third party titles until next year.

But even with the lack of good third party games, the Wii is still selling like hotcakes (imagine how much more in demand it will be when it does have them?). I bet you Microsoft and Sony are kicking themselves right now. Not only Nintendo is making massive profits but the Wii is winning based on mostly first party support.

Before I end this post I must say that enhanced graphics are overrated. It is hyped up by hardcore gamers. They are so obsessed with nice graphics its ridiculous. The mass market doesn't care about seeing every strand of hair on a character. If graphics were important to the mass market then the Gameboy wouldn't have outsould the Gamegear, PS2 outsold Gamecube and Xbox, DS outsold PSP, and Wii outselling 360 and PS3.

Fun, accessibile, innovative, immersive, intuitive gameplay is what counts to the mass market. So props to Nintendo for delivering it.

The best selling games of all time have been made by Nintendo. Mario Bros. 1/3, Dunk Hunt, Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Gold/Silver, Mario World/Land all rank among the most sold games of all time. In fact, if I am right, Nintendo was the publisher of the top 8 selling games, ever, and all of them were made by Nintendo except Tetris, which was created by Alexey Pajitnov and was not working for Nintendo.

So it is easy to see why Nintendo can push its own console, but its not hard to see what will happen when Nintendo starts getting good exclusive 3rd party games, either.

No More Heros, and plenty of other good looking games are right around the corner.

I don't care if Nintendo sells 200 Million consoles... They have being able to do it just by showing the wiimote... kudos to them... great marketting.. console designed to sell to the non-hardcore gamer and to somewhat interest the hardcore gamer enough to buy it.. only if it is to play 1-2 games.

i'm still feeling ripped off by nintendo for the wii (gamecube with a remote); it's not next gen. i hate that, just like the gamecube, i'm goign to buy maybe five games for it and be done. i'm ticked off at the gimmick, which isn't innovation. i can't help but feel people are buying it because they want to own a console and it's the closest to their price range. the wii fills a place in the market, but i don't think it should be compared to the 360 or PS3, ever. not in sales, graphics, anything.

Of course it's a 7th-generation console. Of course it offers ways to play games never before offered by a home console. Of course it allows you to download and play retro games.
