President and founder of Allegorithmic shares his views on PS3 graphics. According to him, "Gamers will be seeing more graphically impressive games than ever" with the new ProfX. He further states that "A very cool side effect of the PS3's architecture is that ProFX should be able to continuously stream textures -- using one or two SPUs to compute the textures to be given to the GPU to be displayed, that's a huge bonus for adding rich content to games without having to stream that content from the BluRay or overloading the sole GPU of the machine."

Its simple (ready?) 3D + Time! meaning the textures (being procedural) can have their parameters changed over time to stress, damage or age the environment for example.

That was not the best part of what was being said as its the memory usage for textures is reduced by ashtonishing amounts.

Yet there are still those that feel that 512 MB of RAM isn't enough. I beg to differ. If Quake 4 showed up on XBox last generation, the future is bright. If Shadow of the Colossus showed up on PS2 last year, the future is bright.

We've got games like Gears that came out a year ago, Mass Effect on the horizon and others like Killzone and Metal Gear Solid. The future looks very bright for game developers...I just wish the sports studios would attempt to make the same leaps and bounds, the annual sports games we've seen are more evolutionary than revolutionary. It seems it is at least easy to integrate into the UT3 engine, what the first demo on their website shows. The lake/boat scene rendered by UT3 and done by Epic.

Its also interesting to read, that the PS3 version gets that virtually free - if you can spare just on SPU and use the rest for the games (still 5+ppu left).

The title quote on this page is seriously misleading. It seems to me, that most of this stuff from the source article applies to both consoles. He(Sebastien Deguy, president and founder of Allegorithmic) mentions multi-threading. The 360 has 6 thread capability. Each of the 3 cores has two threads. Anyway, read these excerpts. One implies that with this technology, you won't NEED to fill a Blu-ray disc. Making more artwork costs too much money. Procedural synthesis, lets the computer make the images out of algorithms.

"Now imagine that applied to a game, where the whole environment and characters are changing, evolving, according to time but also to your actions within that environment. Actual PCs AND CONSOLES can handle this, and I must say I can't wait to see games using this as a feature."

That includes the 360(consoles.)

MMORPGs are a good example here, filling up a BluRay of 50GB of content (instead of 5GB for a single layer DVD) is another one.

Of course, going from a traditional approach for content production to using generative techniques can be quite a challenge by itself, but it's worth the effort, and one of the only ways I see for raising the bar in terms of next-generation content creation."

The 360 is basically a dumbed down PC (Which is why 360 "exclusives" are usually available on the PC). When a lazy developer takes a game and ports it from the 360 to the PS3 they still go at it as if it is a PC/360 game, instead of utilizing the features of the PS3. Since the PS3 and 360 are completely different setups, a game that is designed as a PC game doesn't utilize most of the PS3 hardware. Which is the reason behind the crappy results. You won't see this happen with Call of Duty, just like the GRAW2 port was actually more stunning on the PS3. They weren't simple ports. Read up on the hardware in both consoles to understand better.

You might feel it is a contradiction, but these consoles are like night and day in comparison to their last gen forms, and maybe my wording was improper, but I'm short on time.

That power could be used for something else (like graphics, AI and physics) if the textures were static! That's the good thing about having blu-ray though... you can store almost as many textures as you want, and you won't need to use the processor (unless you WANT to.... you have the OPTION, not the obligation), unlike Xbox 360, which will have to compress a lot of things by procedurally generating them... and therefore, taking an otherwise unnecessary performance hit.

Haze... OMG I was totally underwhelmed by the dumb AI, no AA and it almost looked if the PS3 was drunk. Graphics in the distance made water like waving effects. And that wasn't meant to be in any way. The standpersons said they couldn't tell why it was in there and after I showed them they agreed it didn't look well.

Well considering E.A plainly stated they'd had xbox360 kits for 3.5years, i'm just going by what they said.

Comparing graphics is fine, i enjoy it, if a game looks crap on 360 or ps3 then it looks crap.

But to dig at a machine for the sakes of it, is silly, thats why i have fun bashing 360 owners. They can't see past the red rings.

I'll tell you a few things i know about the 360 games.

Gears of War is maxes out the 360 using all cores and bandwidth.
Lost planet Maxes out the 360 as stated by capcom devs.
Bioshock does not max out the 360. Why? Because it doesn't need a monster to run it.

A dual core with a 7800gtx runs that game fine @ 1280x1024.

My m8 who has a 8800gtx and core duo 2 o/c @3.5ghz and at 1920x1080 he gets 60fps.Full up. With x16af.

What most are saying, and for what is known about ps3.

There are so many ways to do certain tasks, It'll take awhile to work the kinks out. And for your amusement, nothing more then 40% has been used of cell.

Thats why its an interesting prospect.

(aside @ Fanboi: if games are having frame rate issues, that goes back to the devs, not the power of the system. for example, Bioshock on the 360. I'm not blaming the 360 for the cropping of the game to avoid frame rate probs, i blame the developers.)

Sooner or later someone will figure out this crappy systems problem. Im convinced sony bought this machine from the same store that guy bought a GREMLIN at. Maybe they stole it from area 51. maybe they shot it down from the sky. either way its worthless and should have been left alone because now all it does is torture the gamers thaat bought it.

theres nothin else. Hey can I come and play some split screen with you on motorsport. NO! they forgot to add 2 player to that game and resistance i boring... I played that game before when it was called medal of honor. Nice guns though but i liked that better when i played halo. Get lost loser. Sony's biggest lie is that its he most powerful system. It might juice you're electric bill more but it isnt better than a 360 because the xbox is #1 to none. Sony is no competition suckers

Sony does talk alot of this and that, but we really do not know how things will turn out. Alot of ps3 games are getting bad reviews because the dev's havent completely worked out the technology behind it. Who knows, maybe they never will. And perhaps they will. We can only wait and see. I have a ps3 and yeah, I do like the few games that has released on it so far. My brother has a 360 and Wii and the games that he has are fun too. I am not entirely into the graphics thing, but it does make games more interesting.

graphics are quantitative, while gameplay is qualatative. Graphics have increased in quality immensely over the span of my life, while gameplay hasn't.
Better graphics are just expected now. Better gameplay is hoped for but not really expected. Remember how awesome bullet time was the first time you used it? Remember slowing / rewinding time in Prince of Persia? What about the combat system in KOTR? How about the first time you ever played a FF game (assuming your an RPG fan)?

I caught my long time friend in a fanboyism! Then i told him he was blind and he cant see past his fat belly! Kinda like almost all you 360guys cant see why the PS3 is the sh!t! You seem to 4get ur 360 didnt have many games on launch and in fact the first 8 months you didnnt have much to play! Look at the history of gaming and you will see all nextgen consloles dont have the games on launch and it takes time for ppl to use this new form of tech!

In a year from now you can judge the PS3 fairly in compareison to the 360 just because it will have had the same amount of time as the 360 has had to this piont! How long has the 360 been out? 3 years? I dont really know cuz i didnt look into it.

360 guys dont like to look back and they sure as all hell dont look towards the future and this is where u all stumble! U harp on the fact that the PS3 has no games but u dont say "the 360 didnt have the games in the first 8months of its life" ever!

its ok thou! U guys are feeling good with ur FPS360 and its all good. When they get that new chip in there and they can tell me this machine will never break, like Sony can say, i will buy it!
