Japanese Love PS3, Hate Xbox 360 - Google Trends

According to the latest google trends, Xbox 360 was ahead of the PS3 for most of the season. And only recently PS3 seems to be catching up with XBox 360, as it is becoming more affordable and has more games.

With time people gets better knowledge of PS3 features while at same time strong game titles are getting out, next 2/3 years we should see PS3 replacing good space PS2 owns now in gamer's home leaving other systems behind.

PS3's features like PSP connectivity, Video on Demand, very low failure rate, joined with new Home Service to be launched this October (as also PES 2008 and GT5 Prologue get out) will glue gamers on PS3 world as never before super boosting sales worldwide.

Japan is where gamers are well informed about PS3 and this upcoming features and games makes all the point when gamers look for a system.

I own one x360 too and its nice interface for users, but not very functional and not very open about 3th party hardware, PS3's hard drive is very easy to replace to any other compatible while x360 don't allow nothing else than hard drives supplied by MS.

PlayStation Network (PSN) is FREE while x360 Live is PAYED, here we have one big PLUS for Sony's PS3. Mixing all this with PS3 power and integrated Blu-Ray player, it's hard to PS3 NOT TO WIN.

U know i use to own a wii and a 360 core. i traded both for an elite. i also own a ps3. 3/4 months ago i always thaught the ps3 would be better than the 360 once it has more games. i know 360 came out in 2005.

Doesn't bother me I find most japanese games to be uninteresting and sub par when it comes to elements that I enjoy in games like storyline, plot and gameplay.

Nope I am an old PC gamer and only reason I got back into console gaming is because the great game developers (pc game developers) started making games for consoles.

I prefer western RPGs, found most JRPGs to have same old save the world and save the princess storylines combine that with awful dialog and getting attacked every 5 steps. You have a mediocre gaming experience.

@RadientFlux: You obviously haven't played any of the Suikoden games, as well as many other quality story-based Japanese games. WRPGs are as confined by cliches as any JRPGs, such as the inclusion of elves and dwarves in many titles.

I believe that in Japan pepole are very brand loyal, not only because it's japanese, but because they have a special relation to a certain brand. It's much harder to penetrate the jap marked with new brands.

I do do research, idiot. I never said all Japanese games were bad, I just said many that THEY LIKE TO PLAY are mediocre. I've read articles before supporting that the Japanese like games that are easier, and where the camera is stationary. I've played Metal Gear Solid and RE4. Two of my favorite games ever. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been awhile, but aren't the camera angles stationary in MGS and most RE games (except for 4?).

Also, just because a game is made by a Jap. company, doesn't mean it's aimed towards Japanese players. The Japanese like happy, shiny games, not shooters or violent slashers for the most part. They just simply have different tastes and are incredibly loyal to the Sony and Nintendo brands. Read posts more carefully before replying, thanks.

Japan not liking the xbox 360 has nothing to do with how great the xbox 360 is. The only way Japan will adopt a foreign product is when there is nothing like it on their country... Games is more of a tradition than anything else in Japan... besides one only have to see the success of the xbox 360 on every other country compared to the rest of the world... Japanese arent aliens you know... people think that Japanese people don't like what the rest of the humans like... or like what the rest of the world don't like. Unlike Americans that hate the person that live next to them... don't support their economy by purchasing goods manufactured in the country.. Actually, Japan is the 3rd largest market.. The America's are the biggest by far, followed by the European Market, and then Japan.

Fair of not on how they divide the markets, that's how it is. Japan comprises some 14% of the worlds video game market, while the America's comprise of some 45% of the video game market. Don't give Japan more respect than it deserves, those are just the numbers.

And I enjoy strategy games more, but thanks for the generalization.

What's worse for the Playstation 3 is that the Xbox 360 has sold very poorly in Japan--although better than expected.

The FACT is, Sony's Business Plan fully EXPECTED the Playstation 3 to sell MUCH BETTER in Japan than it is!!!

The FACT is, Microsoft's Business Plan actually expected the Xbox 360 to be doing slightly worse than it is. Microsoft never had high expectations for the Xbox 360 in Japan. Microsoft has said all along that their goal for the Xbox 360 in Japan is to use this generation as a stepping stone so that progress is made each generation.

The IMPORTANT FACTS are that the Wii continues to outsell the Playstation 3 by a ratio of 6:1 in Japan!!!

Even this past week when Sony was bragging that the Playstation 3 had a "good sales week," the FACT was that the Wii STILL OUTSOLD the Playstation 3 by a ratio of 3:1.

But the overall sales numbers are what count the most. This past week, when Sony thought it would be a good idea to brag...The Wii sold 75,000 systems, compared to only 25,000 for the Playstation 3. That means over 50,000 more Wii systems were sold in a single week. And the next week, sales were back to normal for the PS3, and the Wii outsold it by a ratio of 6:1...AGAIN.

Microsoft has said that since the $50 price drop of the Xbox 360, sales of the Xbox 360 have increased by 50%, which once again means that the Xbox 360 will outsell the Playstation 3 each week by a ratio of 2:1.

Japan is LITERALLY the ONLY country in the world where the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360.

It is also important to remember that Japan does NOT represent the importance that it used to in terms of sales.

In the 16-bit era, Japan used to represent 30% of the worldwide market for videogames. Currently, Japan represents less than 15% of the worldwide sales for videogames.

In fact, Japan is no longer classified as its own market anymore. Japan is now referred to as a part of the "Asian" market by the videogame Corporation.

The one thing that is SUPER IMPORTANT about Japan, is that they have a lot of third-party developers and publishers of videogames.

And the SUPER IMPORTANT FACT is that the Xbox 360 receives MORE JAPANESE Third-Party SUPPORT than ANY OTHER next-generation console!!!

Even companies like Square-Enix, Konami, and Namco have more Xbox 360 games in development than they do PS3 games.

The bottom line is: Japanese Businessmen--Third-Party Developers--LOVE the Xbox 360 more than ANY OTHER CONSOLE!!!

It sure as hell isn't graphical superiority, or superior online functionality, since XBOX won both of those categories hands-down last gen. PS2 won off of the cheap built-in DVD, huge library of PS1 BC games, and a few exclusive franchise carryovers.

The thing is, the reason the PS3 hasn't taken off yet, is that those factors don't really mean as much this gen.
Blu-Ray is a long ways from becoming the established universally accepted media format, that DVD was after 3 yrs, when the PS2 launched. The BC PS2 library isn't really a draw either, since SONY has continued to push the PS2, with the newer versions, and most owners aren't ready to give up on theirs (especially if they've just bought a PS2 Slim). The # of exclusives has dwindled a lot, and a few others that remain, are still iffy.

CNIVEK, I'm not sure if you read my other post above. But maybe you should. It's more on topic than the post you just wrote. I restate again...I think the theme of this article is about "Japanese Love for the PS3 and HATE for the 360 (more specifically Microsoft)." Yes, that's a big reasons. I know you might just want to pick out parallels to the PS2 trends and how M$ is trying to follow in Sony's footsteps. But brand loyally is not something you can just ignore. And this is not only Japanese fans, but good'le American fans too! Yeah, we like Honda, Toyota, and Nissan (I'm going Japanese!). I'll leave you to ponder over those factors...

Next. Lets talk about tangible reasons just so you don't go accusing us PS fans of "blind" loyally. There's a method to our madness for Sony products. I can list them for you. But I'll just summarize. While PS2 BC is important and past exclusive franchises are important. Sony is not as concerned with those as they are with NEW IPs! IPs that will be exclusive to the PS3 for some pretty good reasons: Cell/RSX/Blu-ray/PCM 7.1 audio and the growing HDTV adoption rate. Long term goals. These will include games that are built from the ground up specifically for the PS3's hardware. Now, are you going to sit there and tell me that the discriminating Sony fan, whether in Japan or around the world doesn't know this? Patience grasshopper! We'll see games that were thought never possible on a console. It will happen. Yes, I'm talking about the graphical superiority which you mentioned as not being a factor in the XBOX success WILL have an impact on the PS3's success. There's also that HD PCM 5-7.1 audio that doesn't get as much attention by the media (thank you 25GB blu-ray!).

Remember the PS2? Cheap DVD player? Lack of HDD? Bad on-line capability? Not this time around. This is not your fathers PS. This is a new type of PlayStation that will push the limits of home entertainment. It's costly, yes. But the price will come down over time and the value will go up (in addition to the game library).

P.S. DVD needed a headstart since VHS had a different formfactor. DVD to Blu-ray shares the same form factor. Thus, it's a much easier transition (12 cm diameter disc). Not the clunky VHS to DVD transition. Try sticking a VHS in a DVD tray. Not pretty.

Oh yeah. Don't forget HOME. But of course, in your eyes, that not important since the original xbot had LIve. Oh well...that's Microsoft stick. Sony dances to a different drummer.

The 360 never had a chance in Japan. It is manufactured by an American corporation. Japan is known for thier Nationalistic style of life. If you put Halo 3 on the Wii or PS3 they would gobble it up. Put Final Fantasy, MGS4, or Mario on the 360 and it still wouldnt sell. Sell it for half the MSRP of the Wii, and the 360 still wouldnt sell. Bottom line is if you put a Nintendo or Sony brand name on the 360 it would sell like hotcakes. It has nothing to do with game selection, price, style, color, etc... The reason why the Xbox 360 is doing better than expected is because of the HUGE sales increase that occured when Blue Dragon was released. That game is very similar to Dragon Quest, and it caused nearly 200,000 people buy the Xbox 360.

Lost Odyssey is a game that is similar to Final Fantasy, and it will cause the Xbox 360 to go through another huge sales increase.

The Xbox 360 is still meeting all of the Sales Objectives of Microsoft's Japanese business plan.

Microsoft knew from the beginning that it was going to be difficult to sell a product in Japan, for all of the reasons you mention.

But Microsoft has made it 100% clear that the success of games like Dead or Alive 4, and Blue Dragon have made it so the Xbox 360 has actually sold better than expected in Japan.

The Playstation 3 is the system that has fallen FAR SHORT of its sales goals. Sony's business plan for Japan has not accomplished one short-term objective towards its long-term goal.

Sony has been forced to lower the price of the Playstation 3 to extreme lows in Japan, yet the system still is completely outsold by the Wii.

Japanese consumers simply are not interested in the Playstation 3.
