IGN: Splinter Cell: Conviction Review

Despite a few questionable level design choices, Splinter Cell Conviction is a great addition to the series. There's no way IGN could go back to a stealth game as it used to be; they've been converted. The only reason to hesitate and pick this up is if you only care about the single-player story and want nothing to do with anything else Conviction has to offer. If that's the case, then there's not a lot of game to be had. And also, you're nuts. The best parts of Conviction are the experiences you have long after you've left Sam Fisher behind.

The score is way above the average, it's that none of the individual category scores are even at, let alone above, the average. I don't have a problem with the game getting a 9.3, but that's just really weird. I don't know if I can take IGN seriously at all after this.

If gameplay was a 9.3 and everything else was a 5, and they still gave it a 9.3, maybe I could see where they were going, but nothing is even listed as 9.3. I can see that maybe they wanted to make a point about their score not being an average, but does it even take the category scores into account at all?

I think this game is probably even deserving of a 9.3, I expected it to score high, but even a hardcore splinter cell and Xbox fan has to admit this is a bit fishy. Seems like they gave the overall before giving the individual scores at least.

You should either be upset that the score shouldn't be above the average, or be upset that the individuals scores aren't as high as they should be. If they hadn't scored it this way, then there would be no room for doubt, but they did what they did, and now there are some very legitimate questions to be asked. Does anyone know if they've scored something quite like this before? I could be more accepting if there was some kind of precedent.

I'm playing the game right now and i was expecting more like an 8.5 but 9.3 is great for the people that care. The game is fun and the gameplay mechanics are cool. The mix between action and stealth is perfect. It's a great model that upcoming stealth games should borrow from. The graphics aren't spectacular but they are pretty and get the job done. My only gripe with the game is the control scheme which confuses me from time to time.

Great Game i recommend it to those that like action, stealth and "adventure" genres.

Oh well, it does have extras in Deniable Ops, like RB6 had the Terrorist Hunt and MW2 had challenges too. If I replay it as much as the demo it should be ok.

Still, can we please get a bit more content for Single players, as stated above, not everyone cares abut running around for another fragfest of deathmatching or CTF.

I want this game but I want to know how well optimized it is for PC. is the ui changed to accommodate pc gamers,are the textures higher res?, do the controls translate well to mouse and keyboard?, etc. assassins creed was a poor port so I'm really hoping ubi did better with this one.

It's because all the PS3 fanboys are jealous that Xbox fans are happy with their games getting good scores. If this was a PS3 game Deuce would get more agrees. A PS3 fan talking about how he loves all the great games coming out will get mad agrees, yet Deuce does the same and he gets massive butthurt disagrees. Anyways, this is a good score and the demo was fun. Was thinking of picking it up, but for a 5 hour game? Hell no. Unacceptably short for me to warrant a $70 pickup.

This game looks great and i liked what i read in this review, im pretty much sold on this game now.

Good year for the 360. First there was Mass Effect 2 which was amazing, now this, and we still have Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, and Halo Reach to look foward too, not to mention some great multiplats like Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space 2, and Dead Rising 2.

Honestly though, Ubisoft have been making games with great concepts, but there always seems to be something missing. Assassin's Creed for example, it was a cool concept, but it ended up being repetitive and the story was weird.

Same for this, it seems that the gameplay is rock solid and the story sounds decent. 5 hours though? Come on, do a little better than that, well at least there's deniable ops to play.

However IIRC, I beat Uncharted 2 in 6 - 7 hours and I paid in full for the game and the multiplayer was meh, just your average fragfest. Yet every PS3 fanboy praise it like it's the second coming. U2's singleplayer was a good experience don't get me wrong, but don't be hypocrites either, SC:C seems to have a good amount of stuff to do.

I'm still trying to figure out how some games can be greater than the sum of its parts, while other games that have similar parts that are all rated higher and better can be less. The GTA:L&D review is too crazy to ignore. On one hand you have a 50+ hour game complete with multiplayer with great gameplay, graphics, and replay value. On the other you have a very short single player game complete with multiplayer with good gameplay, adequate graphics, and adequate replay value. Yet the former scores lower on the same scale in total. I'm not saying anything is wrong with Splinter Cell. I am saying there is something wrong with the IGN review team.

Overall doesn't mean average. The game is probably better as an "overall" whole game than each one of its elements. Most likely due to the experience it gives out.

Your links don't work, but I checked the site. GTA:L&D has 9, 9.5, 10, 9.5, 10 respectively. The overall is 92. That doesn't seem strange one bit. And while it says it isn't an average it does say

"It's important to note that the overall rating is not an average of the five individual categories. We believe that no game will ever fit into a simplistic numeric formula. Many titles are more than a sum of their parts, so the overall score is left to the judgment of the reviewer. If one factor is more important than another, you give more weight to the factor. If more important factor is lower than the normal average then the weighted average can be lower than normal average.

But if every single factor is less than or equal to 9, there is no weighted average gives you 9.3. Similarly, the subscore of this game is all above 8, so it could never get less than 8.

I mention this because IGN divides the review into several section and gives each score separately. If IGN wants to do something like this, better erasing BS subscores.

Conviction is a Splinter Cell game in name more than anything else. You could easily swap Sam Fisher for Jack Bauer or create an all new character and no one would give it a second thought. The gameplay is fast, and Sam has been transformed into the ultimate killer. It's an amazing game, but so different from its predecessors you might not recognize it.

Despite a few questionable level design choices, Splinter Cell Conviction is a great addition to the series. There's no way I could go back to a stealth game as it used to be; I've been converted. The only reason to hesitate and pick this up is if you only care about the single-player story and want nothing to do with anything else Conviction has to offer. If that's the case, then there's not a lot of game to be had. And also, you're nuts. The best parts of Conviction are the experiences you have long after you've left Sam Fisher behind.

So its not really splinter cell he admits the story mode is pretty crap and the best thing is the online (which is really not even testable since game is not even out). I dont understand what is so must-have about that.

I did. Both the graphics and sound are much better than a 8.5 out of 10. Since we're talking about these games we can compare at least the graphics and sound. On one hand you have some of the best character models ever imagined versus Unreal engine looking old. You have sometimes bland environments versus sometimes bland environments. You have important environments that look stellar versus important environments looking mostly bland. It would seem that one is much better than the other. Sound shouldn't even be compared to be honest. There is no way in God's green earth that custom musical scores are equal or close to equal when one is 7.1 lossless audio and the other is compressed 5.1 sound at best. Unless you prefer one or the other. And in that case, FFVII beats them both. That being said. . . The review scores are inconsistent at best.

it's a grade on the game as a whole... though I think lowering the presentation for breaking up the combat with the Iraq level is a bit picky it's really something he felt was a negative... I think this is a case where I'd like to see the SP and MP score separated and he didn't go into detail over the co-op which is suppose to be a great deal more difficult

I don't believe they needed to change their formula that much.
It's now an action game with a bit of stealth.

I was really hoping that they would go back to Pandora Tomorrow's kind of gameplay or chaos theory. Both spectacular games. I loved the single player and loved even more the online multiplayer. I sunk too many damned hours into both those games.

Have you played the Splinter Cell's I mentioned? because if you have, you'd know that I am a wee bit concerned as to how MUCH they've altered the gameplay.

5 hours?! All the other Splinter Cell campaigns were at least 8 hours long. This better not be due to disk space, I would have been happy with 2 disk, one with single player and one with multiplayer...tsk tsk Ubi tsk tsk...

if you add the scores and multiply by 2 which is how this scoring works as i assume
you'd get 8,7 score ..
anyways, he mentioned a lot of downsides and at the end they only listed
-the iraq level as a bad thing and the game got 9,3 although he said some things that would
downsize that score
his review was good but his score seems to be pushed or wasn't his to put

plus, MW2 and BFBC 2 got their grades a little bit downsized because of the short single player
and this game is supposed to be mainly focus on single player, but it turned out to be 5 hours?

looks fun but i don't agree with Hilliary(actually don't agree to most of what he says overall about games)that it revolutionizes stealth games. Its fast paced and action oriented so call it as it is a great action title with stealth elements, why must every game be revolutionary. Five hour campaign is a very dissapointing and seeing as i will not play online it sounds like a bargain bin buy for me(no rental in my country).

With Hillary always minus a .5 from the score with Xbox games as he is the most biased reviewer on IGN. This is not fanboyism just look at his past articles to see what I'm talking about.

for me, SC having a 5 hour single player is very disappointing. I guess because I'm so used to taking my time being all 'stealthy' through each level. Looks like they did change the target audience for this game.

I was a little worried about this one. Being one of my favorite series i am relieved to see the great scores it has been getting. First edge with a 8.0 and ign with a 9.3. Another triple A for the 360. Lenght wise it isn't a problem since i do have buds who will be getting this so co-op is a go.

The single player campaign is 5 hours according to the review.
However, anyone who knows anything about the game (everyone except Sony fanboys) know that there are multiple other modes in the game and the review clearly states (if you actually watched it) that these modes add another 15-20 hours. Most of the modes can be done single player also, not just coop.

Anyone who is mocking this game for being 5 hours is a fanboy who didn't take their time and do any research play and simple.

PS I really like the SC games but don't think I will be getting this run and don't really care what the score is.

I know IGN doesn't "Average" their score points together, but how did a game that didn't score higher than a 9 on any single aspect (graphics, sound, etc) score 9.3?

And a 5 hour campaign? That's really short, and I'm surprised it didn't affect the final score.

Guys something smells fishy here im almost 100% certain that the score has been changed. When I logged to IGN this morning the score was 8.3 that when you think about it actually makes more sense

A game that should have an adventure campaign that clocks in about about 5 hours? I'm sure PS3 owners are throwing a hissy fit over losing out on this exclusive...that was a good joke!!!
I own both by the way and I seriously doubt this is anything to get jealous about, which is once again I'm glad I got for 40 bucks.....even though the gameplay mechanics look great, it is definitely not a 60 dollar title, they even said the bulk of the game is in the multiplayer, so that right there should constitute it as a 40 dollar game...and to those that disagree....don't be mad because you spend 60 bucks on a "short end of the stick" campaign.
You have some people that like a good single player game and the online portion is just an added bonus...hell I'll wait for a price drop.
And it does even have to be about a PS3 or 360 game....I don't care how good the game is for either console, if you have a game that only last that short length of time (and another thing about the change in this installment, its much faster paced so it looks like you can just plough this (not good, unless you crack up the difficulty level to make it last a bit longer), no way can you justify that price tag, if multiplayer is really where its at, then they should of went the online player route like other games and just sold it for 40.
