well the difference is pretty large.
but comparing a new engine to a 5(?) year old one is a tad unfair.
UE3 has lasted, barely, now everyone should use CE3

nveenio5151d ago

The main selling point of UE3 is that it's constantly being improved upon. That's why Gears keeps using it. But CE3 vs UE3 is pretty much common knowledge.

sashimi5151d ago

It's totally fair to compare the 2 since UE3 is still being used by so many developers.

joydestroy5151d ago

haha this is just a silly comparison but i suppose i'll look anyway

darthv725151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

isnt epic about due to reveal some info on the next unreal engine? Maybe gears 3 will be using unreal engine 4?

Scratch that last part. I just read UE4 is not coming till 2012. Hopefully Gears 3 comes out before then with some of the UE4 stuff to whet the appetite.

Bnet3435151d ago

I think the even bigger selling point of UE3 is that it's cheap. How much would it cost a developer to license CE3?

Greywulf5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

Its just sad to think that games could have looked like Cryteks technology, if developers spent time. Its running on the 360's hardware, as well as the PS3. The Unreal engine and the Source engine are old engines folks. Thats why you don't need super beefy computers to run Multiplatform titles, no, you need 5 year old techonlogy that ran the game higher than consoles can run them today, to play these titles.

I doubt Cryteks technology will get the support it deserves because of how moronic the industry is. Epic is a big player, and they aren't going to let obviously better & easier technology get the best of them. Every copy of underwhelming engine game x that sells, is a nail in the coffin for this type of tech. I doubt we will see many Crytek engine games in the future. The talent pool just isn't there. People have been making low polygon garbage with terrible textures for the unreal engine this entire gen, now you're going to tell these people to make Crysis\Uncharted2 quality assets for EVERY release? and multiplatform, restricted to a dvd? ha.. right.

Thank god I don't have to rely on multiplats for actual good visuals & gameplay.

Thank god.

This is the first generation that progress is actually shunned. If idiots really believed graphics don't matter, none of us would have bought the "next generation" of console games that had last gens benchmarks.

corneliuscrust5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

is trying to sell a product. NOT stagnate the industry.

They have an engine to sell. It is popular. They keep working in improvements, but you can only mod an engine so much. It's definitely not the best engine out there, but why does it need to be? Crytek pulled off some incredible feats with cryengine3, they should be commended. Epic should not be reprimanded because of Crytek's good work.

UE4 will be HUGE, but not due for years.

FragGen5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

1. It's not like Crytek's engines are known for their efficiency.

2. This is an Apples/Oranges comparison, especially considering the UE3 is a current version of an existing product that has been deployed in hundreds of products and the CE3 is a cutting edge technology prototype that has not shipped in a single product, yet.

I should certainly hope CE3 would look way better given these points.

badz1495151d ago

Gears is an Epic Games franchise. so...you would expect them to use their own engine for that! it's also part of promoting the engine to the masses. news flash...Gears 3 will also use UE! just the matter of UE3 or 4 but still UE!

Kakkoii5150d ago

@Kigmal:

They don't have a single flat rate for licensing on the CryEngine.

They review your application, and judge how much they would want you to pay based on the information you've given. That way small developers can license it also.

Lets see some games already.

alphakennybody5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

From afar the UE always looks good but once you zoom in, you can see some ugly mess. As for this comparison CE wins it by miles.

@ kaveiti
I hope they upped the lighting effect in the new UE, as it seems to be a major factor for the beautiful visuals in games nowadays

kaveti66165151d ago

Texture res is up to the developer. On a PC, the UE3 can go toe to toe with the CE3 in most departments except lighting.

Kakkoii5150d ago

@Kigmal:

Nah it can't. CE2 has a lot of procedural texturing features built in. And many other more advanced technologies that enable better realism.

Fuzia5151d ago

Cryengine ftw, please.
Now, let us have Crysis 2.

It's good SLI is dead and buried - and my wallet agrees

Kevin writes: "Multi-GPU gaming was one of those things that seemed like a good idea for as long as it lasted. I mean honestly, the idea of a modular approach to graphics upgrades – be that SLI or CrossFire – was brilliant. I repeat, the idea was brilliant."

darthv722d ago

Im old school... when i hear the term SLI, I immediately think of 3dfx. I still have a pair of 12mb Monster V2's in an old rig. I never tried out the more modern take on SLI or Crossfire for that matter.

Vits2d ago

I mean, it was mostly for bragging rights. It was a very temperamental tech that improved with newer iterations, for sure. But folks like myself, who have used it, probably recall that troubleshooting was an integral part of the experience and the value that you got out of the setup was really low.

However, none of that mattered because it looked sick as hell on a well-built PC.

babadivad1d 7h ago

It really did look amazing.

Wretchedstain1d 15h ago

I remember doing my research at the time 😂 I got 2 GTX 460's, as they in SLI were meant to be better than the 480 at the time. Not all games were optimised at the time, which meant some games meant setting them up for 1 card alone. Never forget the time I came home from night shift, turned on my computer like normal, went and made a cuppa, come back and it was still off. Tried to turn on again, and one of the 460's caught fire... good times.

shaenoide1d 14h ago

Why ? For the price of two SLI cards you only get one RqtX card now...

OpenGL1d 10h ago

Exactly what I was thinking. When SLI was around an Nvidia flagship card was $700, less than half the price of their current flagship.
