And now to the PS3 you have Oblivion and then... (sounds of crickets) and you have... (more crickets) well you have Blu-Ray movies.

I know what your Droids excuses are. "devs are lazy" or "you cant use ports for compairing graphics" I say, there you go call the guys who make 90% of your games lazy and unless you can run Gears on a PS3 then the only posible way to side by side is with ports.

PS3 version looks sharper and exciting. I played the game and this article is taking shot a bit away from the comparing shot on the other console. There is not a fair straight up comparion.

Almost the same with the 360 version's lighting is barely more vibrant and little less blurry world and the biggest difference you can see between them is the jaggies in the PS3 version when i say biggest difference i mean hardly any at all. Although people are doing comparison with HDTV's with the console side by side which pics on the net usually handi capp a clear picture by default so the differences might be more profound.

Most will not see and difference(look at bed, edges of walls, street lamps) PS3 looks like it has last genertion over all lighting(alley shots).

360's police cruiser shots look darker when things are suppose to be dark and bright when things are suppose to be bright the PS3 version is over all washed out so to speak" in darkness and brightness.

The kitchen shot i cant tell if both version are different because the charectors are in different parts of the area or if the PS3 version has inferior lighting+ shadowing(like devs said we give up on shadowing just make the PS3 version room all bright forget showdows).

AS for the screenshots the 360 version looks a little darker and the PS3 version looks brighter. Not much of a difference.

I suggest looking at in game play on both consoles.

version yet again. With its highly advanced more powerful GPU. It has been shown time and time again that the RSX just can't compete with the Xenos.

This is yet another trophy to add to the virtual landslide of games that are graphicly superior on the 360.

Not to mention the 360 has an architecture that is optimized for game coding that leads to smoother overall framerates and generally better overall game performance including online functions.

Next time I'd like to see a "vote for which screenshots look better" where there is a blind implemented and the fanboys wont know which consol they're voting for. I played it on PS3 and 360 and they both look the same, but really why would you give a F&^k unless you were about to buy one of the systems just for this game. If you fit this description then you are a dumb a$$. It's a great game but its not that big of a deal. I'm tired of the comparisons of 360 ports to PS3. Lets be honest...Sony fanboys tout theirs either looks better or looks a little worse due to lazy devs in order to save face on their choice and justify the PS3 right now. Fact is this game looks great on both systems. PS3 may have minor slow down but honestly unless its really, really bad I have personally never been truly bothered by slowdown in a game.

I just wish both sides would face the fact that both systems are great and neither one is going to be justifiably better than the other, not now...and most like not in the future. Arguments to buy each can be reasonably made on a number of factors. Really its about which games you want to play because performance wise...they really are pretty much equals.

Just watched GTA4 2nd trailer in HD. In regular version jaggies were very noticeable, now when i watched HD version, i almost didn`t see them.
Atleast in motion, it`s not that noticeable.

I want to know what kind of tv's were used. was hdmi used and was it 1080p capable. Hdmi would definitely smooth out the jaggies. you can tell this reveiwer is bias "Online gameplay is better in the Xbox 360 because of Xbox Live" since it's the same game mode online how would it be better. Just to prove a point I'm going to rent the 360 and the PS3 version and play it on my 40" samsung 1080p and see if there is any visual difference. I'm sick of all this comparisons, especially when I see the pictures of the PS3 and they look washed out and I'm playing on my screen and they look more detail and colorful. So I think alot has to do with them using component cables since the 360 premium doesn't have hdmi, but that's not Sony fault.

Sorry, but, if anything, HDMI *introduces* jaggies that aren't there on antialiased games.
You ever hear of overscan? It totally kills anti-aliasing. And the majority of HDMI-equipped HDTVs out there stupidly overscan everything except VGA.

Of course, for some reason, PS3 developers *don't* appear to use anti-alisiasing at all, which makes things worse once overscan on HDMI and component kicks in. Wish somebody would explain why anybody would think resolution is better than antialising or higher frame-rates...

PS3 tends to always be blurry in these side by sides but having seen PS3 running, if anything it looks crisper than 360(don't know if that's true generally or if attal.).That said i have noticed more jaggies on PS3 especially Ridge Racer which funny enough looks very poorly blurred on 360's.I don't think it matters a whole lot though as you never play just a still image of a game anyway.LCD is more the culprit for making an static image blurry and as for anything moving,dreadful.Get Plasma if you can afford it

PS3 has more content on in-game TVs. That's a small taste of what Blu-ray can do. That kind of content definitely gives you a better sense of immersion and realism (next-gen) instead of having random TVs with nothing on them or a single video at best (last gen). I'm sure some Xbot will deny it.

You may believe it or not, it`s your choice.

1. on x360 is the normal FSAA. On ps3 everything in the stairs and aliasing. x360 version also not ideal, but stairs and other artifacts is considerably less than in ps3 version.

2. to ps3 frequent and strong drops in framerate. Frequent and strong, moreover without the visible reason (i.e. fps falls not when there are many enemies and specials-effect in the sequence, but randomly). x360 also suffers the unstable of fps, but there everything considerably thinner and so strongly does not sag.

3. in ps3 versions load time are longer than in x360. Entirely a little, but nevertheless is noticeable.

All you need to do is play a few 360 games, its horrid.

i've been playing the PS3 version, and the biggest difference is that the PS3 has jaggies.

that bullsh*t ign vid where they say the PS3 has a choppy framerate is BS.

i'm running the game in 1080i (my TVs max setting), and i haven't seen any framerate issues *AT ALL. not even a slight hiccup. i'll run it in 720p and see if that causes issues, but i highly doubt it.

graphical differences, aside, why does this matter? the actual *GAMEPLAY of the game is identical, though i may have to give the immersion edge to the PS3, as all those cool movies and cartoons really does make the world seem more real and believable.

1st, the PS3 version is 1080p/7.1 pcm uncompressed audio. 360 version is 720p(or cheap ass 1080p upconverted),5.1DD. And all PS3 games are pcm some are 5.1 others are 7.1 but all pcm uncompressed remember 360 doesn't do that and can't do that. Next people say framerate issues, ok that's BS too. the people that say that the gpu of the 180 is better may be right, but may be wrong as well, you just dont get that the rsx is a gpu that has yet to be utilized in the correct way, the rsx is powerfull in a much higher way than many gpus today, if you believe that any gpu can compete with rsx in visuals, then you are on meth, the rsx isnt supposed to look powerful on this level games, phil harisson already stated that all games up to now on ps3 are only running on low level graphics engines, that is scary because rsx is the only thing rendering graphics, but what will happen when cell is used only? And since I have a choice between the 2 versions, I'm taking the one that plays in 1080p. It just so happens to be the same version made for a machine
thats built to last more a year so I think I'll be getting ALL my multi plat games on PS3, despite any tiny differences you think you can see. That way when my 360 dies (inevitably) again I wont need to be in a hurry to replace it as most my games will be on the machine that still works.

And its really funny to hear Xbots complaining about Jaggies and tiny graphic imperfections when just a few weeks ago when Forza came out they were all downplaying the importance of a beautiful looking game and Jaggies were worth it, as long as you could see your windshield break.

Actually I did... and guess what... even resistance developers admint that Gears look better... nothing on the PS3 better gears in terms of graphics... and you speak of games which are yet to be release and you have not seem with your own eyes. How can you know if any of these games will look better than gears? Or better yet... how do you know if by the time they are released the xbox 360 will not released a game that will surpass even gears in terms of graphics. (Considering the fact that most PS3 AAA will not be released until mid 2008).
Just remember that Gears was in development before the xbox 360 was launched... and yet... gears is king...

Minute graphic differences probably dont matter to many people (look at the wii), but for a FPS game, FRAMERATES DO MATTER. Why do PC FPS players constantly optimize their little config files and autoexec files to tweak every bit of graphic detail? So they don't get framerate drops.

As quoted above, IGN stated the PS3 has a drop in framerate. As a PS3 owner, this is quite pissing off that they didn't try to match the same experience as Xbox360 users have. Although from a business point of view, its understandable, since its faster and easier to develop for the Xbox360. They were probably optimizing the PS3 code when the release deadline hit and said nope, sorry, get that game into testers hands and out the door, screw those PS3 users, we have more Xbox customers anyways!

If you'll recall, PS1 and PS2 games got the same treatment in the beginning, same w/ the AA issue. It takes more time and effort to optimize graphics for Sony's systems, and history shows us that its worth it. But for now I think everyone can agree that PS3 users got snubbed again (although i'm sure not as bad as Spider-Man 3, I really wanted to play that game too, but it was too rushed for all platforms, and framerates.. ugh). I just hope that Sony gets a great showing in E3 so we have more to look forward to :)

There have been 3 or 4 reviews on this site. From IGN, 1UP, Gamespot. The game got 8.5, 9.0 and 9.1 reviews.

Only thing is, if it's your game. I've played it. It has great movie kind of feeling. Intro one of the best I've seen around in moviestyle. AI of enemies is not really great.

If you own a 360, I would say (if you like driving games) get Dirt to enjoy yourself the coming month, buy Bioshock in August. Not that Bioshock is the same game as The Darkness, but if you want the best games for your 60 bucks now and next months, it's Dirt and Bioshock. The Darkness is still a game to get, if you have the money to burn, because its just a good game!

yeah then you should get it dude. I mean The Darkness is like a movie, it sucks you into that world. The gameplay is twisted and dark. The demon thing and the voice over... pump up your 5.1 sound system LOUD! Eating hearts and the little Berserkers killing off your enemies are on one side insane on the other hand its humor there.

There are many funny jokes in the game also, or just small things that seem to be useless but are just great for the atmosphere.

If you only own a PS3 and have been waiting for some games, get this one. You won't be dissapointed (much better then F.E.A.R. for PS3), although it just has the probs that IGN says it has... As long as you don't run a 360 besides it with the same game, you won't mind I guess

The game is great. I recommend it to any and all shooter fans. The differences between the versions were actually pointed out by the guys over at NeoGAF, and they consist of lack of motion blur and AA on the PS3 version. PS3 also seems to have sporadic frame rate problems.

Antialazing should in theory slow a game down if the hardware cannot deal with it right, so why is the game without it the one with the frame rate problems, that's right PS3 version has no AA yet still has the frame rate issues.

If I was a PS3 owner I would not be happy about this; not because the PS3 is not a good console but because Sony keep telling us that the hardware is superior to the Xbox-360 when this just is not the case; if Xbox-360 had not had the red ring issues then the only argument Sony would have is Bluray which so far has not been a big deal.

At the same screen as the first one with "jaggies" on that level where swat rams the wall on PS3. Honestly they nearly look identical but oddly enough the PS3 looks to have more little details in wood, brick grafitti, blood, etc../that needs to be pointed out. With multiple characters there doesn't seem to be a slowdown to me either, I think they're nitpicking quite honestly because these are two very good copies of the game. period.

but again There are no jaggies on my T.V. Repeat no Jaggiez on my PS3. Samsung 50" plasma with rocketfish HDMI. My picture looks clearer than that and the lines look good, plus I look at a lot of tv in the game. just my observations.

Having watched the video, (not those crappy scrren shots, I can honestly say there is next to no differance between the two. The 360 version does seam to run a little smoother than the PS3, but you cannot notice any differance in alising and hardly any differance in lighting at all.

Hell, I just bought Ninja Gaiden black to play on my 360. Even though it is an original xbox game and it doesnt have the next gen look, I bought it because it is fun. I mean, I'll be the first to admit that I get on here at times and play wargames, but it's all in fun. Both versions of The Darkness look good. Even if the 360 version looks better, the PS3 is getting alot more good games than we did back this time last year when we were still early out the gate. I know some people swear, they have the best 1080p monitor can buy, and the best 20+ MP cameras out there, well to each his own, and like they say whatever makes you sleep at night. In the End the Multi-games for the Xbox360 have fared very well, head 2 head. Something I thought the PS3 would of been crushing the 360 in that department, but we all now, understand, what Sony was touting at E3 2006, is still promises and potential, that have not yet materialized. At least not yet.

Until, I see a "Huge Gap" in the difference with these Multi games, that makes the PS3 warrant my attention, I will continue to Embrace the Xbox 360, for is why I bought it first.(As we all know, first-PArty games on both consoles will look awesome) The 360, hardware may have issues, but "when it works..hehe", it works wonderfully, besides the tools/support MS gives the developers.

Right now PS3 is slowly catching up but no cookie for the developers that have had a hard time with whatever piece of architecture/support Sony has given them.

Who cares which version looks better. To me the true power of both systems are the first party games. If games like Heavenly Sword, Lair or Uncharted Drake's Fortune start having problems like this than people could criticize the PS3. XBOX 1 was more powerfull then the PS2. Sony's marketinglies said the PS2 would be 10 x more powerfull then a supercomputer, or at least 2 x as powerfull as the XBOX 1. Which was wrong.

Now again, Sony puts out paper specs (remember the Emotion engine TFLOP story, now what did it bring in output exactly?), about the Cell, but the cell is great for playing/streaming video, folding @ home, but not for games. The 360 GPU is more powerfull then the PS3 one...

Doesn't matter that much. Systems are about as equal in power. But still the 360 has the better versions. No matter why actually. It just does. If its the ports or the free AA because of the 10 MB extra fast embedded ram/extra die on GPU or anything else...

Fact is: a 300 or 400 dollar/euro machine outperforms a 600 dollar/euro console over and over again. That combined with the premium and most optimal online experience, it's just pretty clear. The 360 kicks the PS3's ars. And that's visible in the sales. The 360 just sells double the number world wide as the PS3.

No dude. You Sony droids are always claiming that your BluRay player does better. So as long as the 360 owners have games that are at least equal or just better, your machine isn't living up to its ghost, created by Sony themselves. There have been enough comparison video's where the 360 version is clearly better. If you don't accept that, that's your problem, not ours.

Besides COD2, there was PGR3, Kameo, Condemned, just after that (within that launch window) FNR3, Oblivion, GRAW. Just after that (about where the PS3 is now) Moto GP 06, Dead Rising and more. The 360 just had a better line up in diversity and own exclusives (although sometimes timed because the PS3 wasn't there at that time).

I don't think comparisons between time of release should really be considered too important in terms of game quality. After all its not like Sony wasn't developing games for that year the Xbox was released. Microsoft took a gamble and got its system out early with a few hardware bugs, but in the end they get to enjoy a larger user base and more games thanks to that 1 year.

If you've seen my comments or news, you'd probably figure out that I'm no xbot, but once again, you want another game that looks obviously better on the 360? Spider-Man 3. The difference in buildings and framerates when swinging around is too dramatic to be dusted off as mere difference in AA optimizing.

I will admit that that one does as well. But both systems can pump out pretty much the same stuff (that was where i was going with it).
And the dvd9 has its limits, in the sense that the best game out for it had a very short first player campaign, only 5 acts. whereas prabably the best game out for the ps3 RFOM had 52 levels and roughly lower 40s in full levels.
So unless bungie wants halo3 to have only 5 levels they will have to have a multidisk game like what the gamecube did.

i've actually compared this game on my SXRD 50A200 with both systems. PS3 via HDMI and xbox via component. Given that set up, the PS3 looked better than the 360 with 720P but the 360 did a better job with 1080i. Overall 720p on the PS3 looked best for this game. Would be curious what HDMI via the xbox would look like but I don't have an elite. At the end of the day, the differences were minute at best.

Why would Halo show the limits of the 360? Will Heavenly Sword show the absolute best graphics that the PS3 is capable of? Of course not. Both of these systems are still relatively new and developers are still figuring them out.

Plus, it's almost impossible to get a good comparison by using two different games. One may have much better graphics, but the other could have 800 enemies on the screen at once. Does that mean that the system is less capable of great graphics?

Both will continue to improve their graphics over time. Eventually, you will probably see the hardware advantage of the PS3, but I really don't think it's going to blow away the 360 or anything.

I'm sure there are differences, but really, give it up. Whatever minuscule differences there are between the two version is non-important. The Darkness on xbox 360 and ps3 truly are identical. I own a ps3 and the darkness my buddy the x360 and the darkness.

I conducted a test where I asked a few of my friends if they saw any differences between the two images in all cases

I covered the left quarter of the screen so that they could not know which was 360 and which was PS3 and neither could notice a difference between the two.

Proof that they both look pretty much the same.

And no I did not rush through the screens i gave them at least 30 seconds to view each set.

When a game is created on both platforms at once- the rule of thumb is its made on the xbox first and then ported and modified for the ps3. This ususally works in xboxs favor. But when a game is developed on one platform and ported to the other months down the road. It usually favors the later console. Keep in mind that it is still easier for developers to make games on the xbox. And most games that have come out or are coming out this year started on the xbox. Sony still hasnt really dug in and helped developers get a hold on how to program for the ps3. So things like lighting for games will be more advanced for xbox right now. But please understand xbox fans that this wont be the trend for long. The ps3 is capable of everything the xbox is capable of. Its just more complex to do right now. So leave it at that. Xbox has the better looking games for the moment but in the long run the ps3 will most likley take over in graphics. The cell is really that powerful.

Armored Core 4 with the 360 having HDR and AA and the PS3 version didn't, smells like a 7800gtx 256mb in the ps3 which is weak comapred to the 360 gpu. No HDR and AA together is a dead giveaway that the rsx is indeed a 7800gtx or lower. View attached pics of Armored Core 4 where the ps3 got pwned!

The top pic is the 360 version with the smooth AA andreflections that aren't present in the PS3 version. Same with F.E.A.R, Call of Duty 3, Def Jam Icon and many others.

as a PS3 fan and gamer (not a fanboy), it really is that simple.
The 360 has a better GPU that is more powerful. And the coding for the 360 is a lot easier as well. So most if not all of the multiplatform games are gonna look better on the 360. But the combo of the RSX mixed in with the CELL if nothing to sneeze at when coded for properly. Example Resistance, this game looks better than COD 2 at launch for their respective system. Motorstorm as well is in a league of it's own, maybe not in term of graphics (even though they are great) but physics, A.I., and environment defacing are all well above greatness.
The 360 is easier to code for and has a more powerful GPU, but IMO the PS3 is a more powerful machine, but the work needed to put out that power is a lot and maybe to much for most multiplatform developers to even want to mess with, when the products they produce usually have to have a quick turn-around.

NINJA GAIDEN SIGMA HAS 4X AA AND HDR. Xbox and Ps3 are not similar. Its not apples to apples.Xbox has more in common with a pc as far as the hardware and programing required. cell is a brand new technology that it appears only sony knows how to tap into, and hopefully soon they will release better dev kits. and some dev kits have been released, but the games on the market now have all been designed using microsofts dev kits. Just because something isn't coded for it properly isn't the machine's fault. Corvettes are nice cars off the assembly line, but if you do the minimum upgrade aftermarket and I go all out, I'm going to leave you sitting at the intersection..get it?

Just like there aren't many / any games yet that are PS3 to ===>> 360 we don't know how they would look. So everyone needs to calm down. The comparisons are negligible at this point and the game has it's perks on both consoles - wow. The 360 does what it does well, and so does the PS3. How long has each console been out since launch comparitively and the time devs have had w/ the machines? Everyone knows that the 360 offers an easy template for devs to dive into right now. Give it a rest N4G we're beating ourselves up for NOTHING. E3 FTW!

I don't think Snoop is a pu$$y for playing it cool, but I have to agree that he is playing it safe a bit. There's nothing wrong with liking all of the consoles, because no matter what side we choose, deep down we all know that both the ps3 and the 360 are awesome. I love the 360, but if it didn't exist (or if I had a ton of extra cash to throw around), I'd have a ps3, and I know many ps3 fans would do the same in regards to the 360. Because no matter which console we prefer, we're gamers first and foremost. Hell, I wish Sega would make consoles again.

Snoop, I've been curious since I started reading your posts on N4G. Which console do you prefer? If someone is a big enough geek to get mad depending on which console you prefer, then screw 'em.

what's really funny to me, is that the most vocal people on this flamewar probably don't have a 360 *OR a PS3, yet they hop on the bandwagon because IGN said so.

i admit, i haven't played the 360 version, but i've been playing the PS3 version since it came out.

TRUTH: There are jaggies on the PS3 version.

FALSE: The PS3 has framerate issues. During 5 hours of play so far, i have yet to run into *ANY framerate issues.

honestly, first it was; the PS3 sucks. ports suck on the PS3!

now that the console has gotten some rather solid ports (Oblivion, Rainbow Six Vegas, and The Darkness), it's now time to nitpick? this is getting ridiculous.

if you only own a 360, please, run out and get this game, it's great.

if you own both, well, it then just boils down to how much you like the idea of tons of cartoons and cool movies like To Kill A Mockingbird and The Street Fighter, and if you'd like to see them playing on tvs throughout the game.

on a *GAMEPLAY level, the games are exactly the same, though i feel that the inclusion of movies, cartoons, and videos in the movie on the PS3 version make it feel a bit more "real."

go look at the videos of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and tell me that the PS3 isn't capable of some amazing things.

what is it going to take for you all to realize that the RSX/Cell *COMBINATION can produce visuals on par, or arguably better than, Gears of War, which, last i checked, was the only 360 game i've seen that even remotely comes close to *LOOKING next gen.

when games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Gears of War start becoming the *NORM for the 360, *THAT'S when you boast.

Folklore, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, FFXIII, Heavy Rain, Heavenly Sword, and White Knight Story all look *AMAZING on the visual end.

much like how there are those that accept that Mass Effect will look as stunning as it is now, there are those that accept, based off of released games and upcoming games, that the PS3 is capable of some fantastic visuals.

all this bickering is ridiculous, and reinforces my belief that most of you guys have yet to reach puberty in any form.

personally, i think the 360 and PS3 are great pieces of technology for what they do, but the failure rates of the 360 is what keep me from picking one up (that, and i don't like Gears of War, try as i might). when Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Fable 2 hit, i may consider picking up a 360. as it stands, i own a PS3, i'm enjoying HD movies and games, and online gaming at no extra cost to me, and i get to enjoy cool games like The Darkness, even though it may not be the "definitive version" of the game. it's all good guys. really. it is.

I have the x360 and ps3 i love both consoles but ps3 blows it away on 1080p but also on 1080i ps3 has a slight edge but both games are graphicly amazing so buy it!

i dont even waste my time arguing with the xbots. just give it some time for the devs to truly harness the power of the ps3, time devs have had for 360, and in bout a year, ps3 games r gonna blow em away. how much is a five year subscription to xbox live? and the add-on for HD-DVD?
