Video Thirst: Throwback Gaming: Resident Evil 2 (PS1)

Colton West: Resident Evil 2 is widely considered to be one of the best entries in the Resident Evil franchise. It introduced us to two of the series' most popular characters and improved upon the formula created by the original. So much so in fact that it surpassed the first title in every way possible.

I really have to disagree with that. RE2 was crap compared to the original.

Agree, 100% completley.

RE2 is where the series 1st went wrong... While it tried to retain the elements of the 1st it failed teribly.

The original is classic to thsi day. The story. The plot. The interaction. The creepy, isolation. The unknowing nature of the Mansion. It was absolute brilliance. It was so good because it was so new and so lonley feeling. It was so good because it was a big story set into one location.

RE2 failed because it tried to get bigger and grander. They tried to make something more out of a basic story. Sometimes, and you see this mistake alot in hollywood screenplays, less is better. People don't understand that. hollywood doesn't get it, either. The less you show and the more you ellude to the better for everyone. It never lets us fully know everything. Some of the best things about RE 1 were what we didn't know. What we wanted to think behind closed door 1 or 2 or even 3. It's a lost art in both games and Hollywood. One we won't ever get back, probably.

RE2 is the series demise. RE1 worked because it was absolutley new. It was absolutley minimalistic on the details. Don't give me everything.. Give me pieces and let me put them together... RE 2 and Racoon City felt like rooms. You entered them one way and exited another. It was stupid.

The giant Aligator was lame too. The Giant Spider and Snake in the Mansion were chalked up to experiments gone wrong in the lab. The aligator, to me, was an age ol tale of flush the gator and it ends up in the sewer.. It wasn't scary. It was pecular and funny.

RE2 is my favorite. The first was great, but this one was amazing. The dual stories, the ability to see how things changed depending on who went what way at the very beginning. It was great. Not to mention lickers. Freaking scary game.

I remember playing RE2 for the first time back in high school and to this day its still one of the best games I've played; back when story AND play mechanics made a difference. I'd fight to either play this or Metal Gear Solid on the weekends in between my FF7 time.

Remember the reverse scenario? Awesomeness. This game lasted me a long long time.

The reverse scenarios did entice me to play through the game at least 4 times, and everytime I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I also remember how freaking hard it was for me to unlock Hunk and Tofu, which back then I thought Tofu would be an actual soldier, not an actually piece of tofu with legs and a gun!

I never played 2, but I did buy and play the original on my PS. Had my PS and everything hooked upto my music system.

I remember turning out the lights and cranking up the sound.

RE1, 2 and 3. They're the only games in the series.

While I appreciated and applauded the effort to put Resident Evil on the 64, the big blocky polygons on the zombie were painful to look at. I much rather prefer playing this and Code Veronica on the old trusty Dreamcast, which NEVER had any hardware failure issues.

On the contrary, Resident evil 2 caught my attention because it was bigger and much grander in scale.

I enjoyed transitioning from one set piece to the next, because it felt like I was slowly peeling away the layers of raccoon city and unveiling the secrets that lay beneath them.

To me, the different areas were crucial to the story, because Hideki Kamiya was trying to show how widespread umbrella's control and destruction had reached. The corruption within the police dept., the secrets within in it, and the secrets below it. Every single area that I traversed was like a long walk down a dark, descending hole. The further I ventured, the more horrifying secrets I discovered and in the end it made me realize how powerfully terrifying umbrella was. RE2 really played out the fear of corporate conspiracy to it's fullest potential.

Honestly, resident evil 2 was the beginning of when the franchise started coming into it's own and creating something original.

I see the original resident evil as merely a carbon copy of alone in the dark. That is, until resident evil remake came about and redeemed itself. That version, I do consider it as the definitive version of old-school resident evil. But, not the original that was merely a rough concept that had ALOT of room for adjustment.

RE4 was still amazing, but RE5 crapped all over the series' reputation for me. Complete load of sh!t.
