Do You Want To Game In 3D?

Kotaku writes: Here's how it works: We ask a question, you answer it. Simple and no strings attached! This isn't some marketing survey or whatever. It's an emotional investment in you. Yes, we're interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person.

You probably know oodles about us - more than you even want to, we're sure. But, hey, we'd like to know about you. That way you won't be some faceless blob - and we might feel a tinge of guilt when we ban ya. Or not, because really we're incapable of human emotion.

The rage these days seems to be two things: 3D and Twilight. No, we will not ask you about Twilight. You can ask yourself about Twilight. Instead, we will ask this:

Question: Are you interested in 3D gaming? Why or why not?

Sure I would like to play some 3D games as long as I can sit in my Lazy Boy with my regular controller. I have more concerns with the motion sensing craze than I do with 3D. If I want excersise I'll use my weights or go outside and play a sport.

thorstein5215d ago

Not toward motion control (I think even Nintendo gets that) they are looking at Wii2 already!

JsonHenry5215d ago

Way back in like 2003-2004 Nvidia had a 3D setup that worked really well and it was a lot of fun playing Unreal Tournament 2003 in 3D. It made it easier to navigate a 3D space and I noticed I got stuck on corners/doorways a lot less than usual.

Immortal Kaim5215d ago

Definitely not, It really does seem overly gimmicky to me (the majority of industry professionals agree), and I honestly don't see it taking off. Just too many barriers currently in the way as well. 3DTV's are too pricy (obviously they will come down), but the biggest hurdle will be the ridiculous 3D shutter glasses...who wants to wear stupid, bulky glasses whilst playing?

I'm yet to see what 3D will offer to gaming?

Carl14125215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

I definitely agree that motion control crap is far more concerning that 3D. 3D i can live without, my games will be exactly the same in 2D, which ha been incredible for the last X amount of years so i don't see why it can't be anymore. But being forced to use motion control if i want to get the good games (no doubt they will include some form of the crap) is something i couldn't live with.

And in answer to the main question, no i am not the least bit interested: My HDTV is fine for me at the minute, and i am not pouring tons of money into a new sort of TV already.

SilentNegotiator5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

Do I own or have the money for a 3D capable TV? No, not right now :(
One of these days, alice, one of these days....

"Definitely not, It really does seem overly gimmicky to me (the majority of industry professionals agree)"
You and "Industry professionals" agree that a side feature is "Gimmicky"? ROFL, it's an optional side feature.

lordgodalming5215d ago

No thanks. 3D gives me an insta-headache. HD > 3D.

ReservoirDog3165215d ago

I'd rather not, no. I feel it would kill the immersion. Things jumping out at you that as soon as it doesn't really hit you, it kills the immersion.

Just work on good writing like my top 5 games (see bio). Those are all immersive because of the writing. 3D is just annoyingly gimmicky.

morganfell5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

Absolutely. And like any tech, 3D screens will be more expensive at launch. Remember LCDs? Considering most homes do not have a HDTV there is definitely room to grow.

Kratos Spartan5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

your in your living room sitting on the couch. Your playing a game in 3D with the glasses or however. You look over, and there is someone on the couch beside you. BUT THEY ARE IN THE GAME...

that is the future

PS3Freak5215d ago

I'll deffinetly give it a shot, but i'm not exactly anticipating it.

rockleex5215d ago

If people accept that motion controls add to the immersion, I don't see why 3D wouldn't either.

Wouldn't the best possible scenario be to INTERACT with the game in 3D (motion controls) and to SEE the game in 3D?

That is the closest we can get to hologram gaming right now, which everyone agrees would offer the most immersion.

blu_yu_away5215d ago

The problem I have with 3D is that it doesn't actually give you the feeling of reality and depth. It looks like what is basically a moving pop-up book. Not to mention that the glasses are annoying.

mikeslemonade5215d ago

Wii "boyfans" thought HD wouldn't matter for gaming and now where are they? There no such thing as Wii fanboys anymore. 3D is going to be the same and it will take off.

ikral5215d ago

I do want to play games in 3D, when time comes. It will be great. Only thing i would want to have TV with no need for glases.

Game13a13y5215d ago

after watching the movie Avatar in 3D, i can totally imagine every big blockbluster hits will go to the way of 3D from now on. its just basic economy, customers wants it, companies make money, why not?

mfwahwah5214d ago

I definitely want 3D gaming. It won't affect games negatively in any way.

It'll just be more immersive and fun. Imagine playing Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, or Dead Space and seeing **** jump out at you in 3D. That would be crazy.

Then Gran Turismo 5. What better for a racing simulator than some 3D?

First Person Shooters would probably be more intense.

Only games I don't really see this working well on are games like Valkyria Chronicles. I don't know how the art style would work with 3D (and RPGs in general I guess. I think they'd benefit the least from 3D)

I just really see nothing wrong with the concept. Of course the TVs might be a bit pricey (They won't be THAT much more than current models though), and it might be funny wearing glasses like that at first, but I can deal with that.

garos825214d ago

YES

long answer

YES PLEASE

Godmars2905215d ago

I'd like to see a continuation of sprites, but those are all but dead :(

Mista T5215d ago

heck yes, after seeing the movie Avatar I can't imagine the possibilities of 3d in gaming!!!

ape0075215d ago

imagine jumping off a helicopter into an air plane

that gonna shock the hell out of you

R6ex5215d ago

Not to mention the crazy sense of chaos if your're playing 3D Prototype.

Guess Mirror's Edge will be more realistic with 3D.

A 3D Prince of Persia will surely give you vertigo.

I can't wait for 3D!

However, please design proper 3D glasses for people who wear prescription glasses like me. :(

The Great Melon5215d ago

@R6ex

Many people who don't wear glasses complain about the weight of the shutter glasses. I find it funny that it doesn't bother me one bit because I already wear corrective lens. Yeah, they might not fit real well, but I am so use to glasses that it doesn't bother me at all.

EKWB reportedly plagued with financial disarray many gaming pc's left without parts

EK Cooling allegedly has slipped itself into a hot soup of seemingly endless financial woes, where it has not paid its staff, suppliers, and contractors for many months as the company is facing liquidity problems and a surplus of inventory left unsold, stuck in the warehouse for a more extended period. Gamers Nexus investigated these claims made by former and current personnel, where he found trails of unpaid bills lasting as long as three to four months and unpaid raises that accumulated for almost a year.

EK Water Blocks has two entities—a Slovenian-based headquarters and a US-based subsidiary, EK Cooling Solutions. Steve narrated the series of events in detail, stating that the company was reportedly irresponsible and negligent regarding payment. Consequently, partners and employees are forced to share the burden of alleged mismanagement. It all begins with its extensive range of products, leading to a surplus of goods. EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Yes this is not about video games directly but indirectly this will impact the pc gaming/workstation space hard.

This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

SO yeah i know not about a video game but think of it as amd leaving the pc space but this is ekwb that could be leaving water cooling in the pc space

Jayz2cents a supporter of there products also has issues

As someone that has built a watercooling rig. EK is big, but there's so many numerous watercooling part companies out there. EK's stuff isn't exactly amazing quality for the price compared to others either, it's just ok. Much like Corsair. The impact would be negligible long term. For perspective the majority of my parts are XSPC, at most I use EK for my gpu waterblocks and fittings. Both easily replaceable.
