Project Natal vs PS Motion Control: Which has more potential?

Project Natal and PS Motion controllers are both coming out 2010. But based on what the two companies have shown us thus far, which one has the most GAMING potential? Which one will bring in the Wii casuals? Which one is better? The video below makes it obvious. Enjoy.

i go with innovation

i think NATAL will bring something new to the table

that's just my opinion

krouse935241d ago

Natal is just the PSEYE or EYETOY with no controller....

sinncross5241d ago

At this moment in time I say the PS3 Sphere mainly because Sony has showed that it has a wide applicability range.

I am still at a loss as to how the Natal can play games like Halo and Gears of War. Until MS can show this to me, I'm more in favour of Sony's attempt in all honesty.

deadreckoning6665241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Well, the PS Motion Control will be better out of the gate because of its accuracy, but Natal will EVENTUALLY become as good as the PS Motion Controller once developers learn how to take full advantage of it.

And obviously M$ will advertise Natal like mad and they'll get the media on their side, thus getting the casuals on their side, thus generating more sales than the PS Wand. Also, Natal is taking a BIGGER risk than Sony to innovate. I applaud risk-taking.

In the end, the Wands have more POTENTIAL, but Sony's gunna have a hard time of convincing the mainstream of that once Natal drops and people are gaming with NO controller.

MaximusPrime5241d ago

i'd rather hold something physical.

i dont want to be like this grandma in this demo.

deadreckoning6665241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

@Bungie- If I had to chose one, I'd chose the Wands(mainly because I only have a PS3 right now). But I don't understand why any self-respecting gamer would AT LEAST want to give Natal a try. In all honesty none of us have a strong opinion of either since we haven't played either yet.

"Natal does not have a chance."

Ur a funny man. U do know there are more 360s in American households than PS3s right?

And ur saying Natal won't have a chance. The 360 community is USED to being nickled and dimed by M$ thus the 360 community spends MORE money on add-ons than the PS3 community. Therefore, more 360 owners will buy Natal than the number of PS3 owners that will buy the Wands.

U should rethink ur statement.

Lou-Cipher5241d ago

Considering that there is absolutely nothing Natal can do that Sony's Motion tech cant, but there is alot of things Sony's Motion tech can do tht Natal cant.

Considering that Sony's Motion tech will have 35-50 games available before Natal even comes out.

Considering you can Port several Wii games over to Sony's Motion tech, but cant port over to Natal.

Considering that Natal is riddled with lag, and Sony's Motion tech has the most accuracy of any Motion controls.

And knowing that the Eye Toy was a joke that nobody enjoyed, I think it is fair to say.

Natal does not have a chance.

Saaking5241d ago

I'll put it very simple for everyone:

1. Natal is just a more advanced version of the PSeye

2. The PS wands are just a more advance version of the Wii mote.

Simple enough? I choose neither. Unless I see something really revolutionary, I'll just stick to the Dualshock and 360 gamepad.

Homicide5241d ago

The wand is just a wiimote.

Saaking5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Yes, it's just a more advanced Wiimote. Just like NATAL is a more advanced PSeye. Get it?

@Cold

If you already have a wii why would you need Natal or the wands? You already have motion controls don't you? So what's the point?

Cold 20005241d ago

I already have a Wii, dont need Sony's wand.

presto7175241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

or hannah montana sing along. thats all I can think of. The ps3 wand however would be really nice for a hardcore gamer like myself. Just imagine playing demons souls with two wands, one in each hand. OMG. That would be too awesome

@MaximusPrime

I know right? There are so many things the Wand can do. The LBP demo was sick!! I'm really excited about it.

MaximusPrime5241d ago

@presto717:

Sony already shown a demo of LittleBigPlanet using a PS Gem (or Sphere)
I think its pretty good for family fun.

Arnon5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Really?...

"The device features an "RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software", which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities. The Project Natal sensor's microphone array enables the Xbox 360 to conduct acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression, allowing for things such as headset-free party chat over Xbox Live."

"The depth sensor consists of an infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor, and allows the Project Natal sensor to see in 3D under any ambient light conditions. The sensing range of the depth sensor is adjustable, with the Project Natal software capable of automatically calibrating the sensor based on gameplay and the player's physical environment, such as the presence of chairs."

"The skeletal mapping technology shown at E3 2009 was capable of simultaneously tracking up to four users for motion analysis, with a feature extraction of 48 skeletal points on a human body at a frame rate of 30 hertz. Depending on the person's distance from the sensor, Project Natal is capable of tracking models that can identify individual fingers."

There has also never been an actual report of a previewer experiencing lag whatsoever (from what I've seen) with Project Natal's demos such as Burnout Paradise.

Natal also has support from over 12 major developers such as Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, Capcom, Disney Interactive, Electronic Arts, Konami, MTV Games, Namco Bandai, Sega, Square Enix, THQ, Ubisoft, EPIC Games (As Mark Rein stated, "All our future games will support Natal."), Rare and Lionhead Studios.

So how exactly is Natal going to fail?

Microsoft Xbox 3605241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

The one that is most accurate has more potential, so obviously the PS3 motion control.

Milky Joe5241d ago

Neither! I have developed my very own motion tracking device for use with games console! It is called the Gyroscopic Boobitiser and it allows for full body tracking and voice recognition. It also has full button input so you can reap the benefits of a handset, but there is no handset or buttons so you are completely free to move around! The only thing you need is the device itself which connects to your microwave and amplifies the electromagnetic radiation to detect motion. You do also need a full body hazard suit to protect yourself from the potentially-dangerous rays but it's a small price to pay for innovation.

It's launching next february with a host of titles including new games such as Pac-Cat and Titris as well as games from more established series' including a sequel to the critically acclaimed Super Rub-a-Dub, taglined "Bath Time Blood Bowl", and the latest entry into the Duke Nukem series, "Duke Nukem: Just Never, okay?"

I'm anticipating limited supply so get those preorders of £200/$400 in ASAP!!

lowcarb5241d ago

Until i see both in action with games made for each I'm going to have to agree with you.

sikbeta5241d ago

·Natal is an Upgrade of the PS Eyetoy, more tech and all but moving like an idiot doesn't make gaming more enjoyable

·PS D!|dø is just that, a D!|dø, the same cr@p like teh wii-mote without nµn-chuck and The WORST thing, it doesn't have an Analogue stick

Motion-control-gaming = SHOVELWARE

RememberThe3575241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

But you need Natal?

It all depends on how their used. They could both be used is some really cool ways but it'll be up to developers to decide whether they're going to make shovelware or real games.

Natal could be used to interact with the game but on full control it; that could be left to the 360 controller.

The PS3 wand showed what looked like a pretty cool demo using a flashlight which now makes me think of the new Silent Hill game for the Wii that looks really good.

@below: That same developer said this:

"'I was actually more impressed with Sony’s motion capture solution than Microsoft’s Natal,' he said as part of this week’s Develop Jury Service.

'[Natal is] exceedingly clever, but the lag on the input and lack of physical buttons is really going to restrict the kind of games that can be done with it,' he added, before going on to praise Sony’s (currently nameless) alternative."

So there is much more to be said.

IdleLeeSiuLung5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

What Traveller's Tale director had this to say:

“The software behind Natal stunned me,” added Burton. “To be able to take effectively a bump-map of a person and turn that into a fully articulated and rigged polygonal skeleton is an incredible feat. We run a mo-cap studio and to get anything resembling mo-cap, live in real-time, from effectively a single camera is nothing short of amazing.”

enuff said!

randomwiz5241d ago

imho, i'd love to see natal work perfectly, but it's going to be tough for developers to work with something like that.

For Natal to be successful, Microsoft needs moer 1st party studios, or needs a damn good SDK.

Government Cheese5241d ago

The Wii already is in control of the 'motion control crowd'. This is just a bunch of copying by MS and Sony to steal some of that fanbase, but I'd rather them not bother and just stick to normal control schemes, but whatever.

lowcarb5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

That's some good spin saying they both suck lol. You see the sphere is nothing more than like Saaking said a Wiimote with better accuracy. Natal is a completely different beast that actually goes well beyond anything eyetoy could ever be and will bring new life to 360 visually and gameplay wise. Just because you know the PS3 sphere will suck because it's a wiimote does not mean you have to claim they both suck. You obviously no nothing about Natal or your playing dumb out of pride. It's just hilarious how every time something on PS3 doesn't add up they both have to suck. Hopefully we will see some games soon to really see whats going on but your view are backwards.

edit above gov cheese: The Wiimote is not the 1st motion controller to exist. The sphere I will admit is nothing more than a copy cat but Natal goes beyond anything the Wii thought of being.

sikbeta5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Sorry for not thinking that both are the HOLLY GRIAL OF GAMING as you do

IF someone WANT Motion-Control Gaming, wii is valid option, Nintendo came first with this, so why now everyone is trying to copy this

What gamers can win with this?
Maybe, shovelware games instead of great games that deserve $60

At the beginning of this motion-madness, I thought it's going to be OK if is implemented in REAL Games, but then what I see about the "wand" don't convince me

Sorry, but I think using the "wand" in one hand an the DS3 in the other to play a game, is JUST STUPID

And after watching M$ E3 Conference about Natal and the "xbox avatar shoe" cr@ppy glitch, that was even worse

The stupid avatar had one leg behind the neck (???), imagine playing Gears and after shooting, Marcus get wounded by his own Lancer, is going to be the more annoying thing ever lol

Well that's my opinion, I can't do anything to prevent this new trend to convert Gamers into Casuals, enjoy both for me

masterofpwnage5241d ago

well i hate ps eye so
im sure not going to like natal
i like the wii and the wii mote so im sure going to get ps motion controll
i think
natal more to kids because dam i dont think grown men or teens or 17 to 19 year old would want to that whole moving aroung unless there with friends trying to have fun.
but i think it will get boring.

ps motion. well i like the wii and playing resident evil is fun with it so yeah, i can also see it more of you playing it by your self and with people around. and i also saw a demo of it where is like aln wake with the whole flash light thing but in first person.

but all in all who cares. is just motion controll. alot of you guys bash the wii for having it and now ps fanboys want it and alot of 360 fanboys bash the ps eye, but now they want it.

to tell you the truth i dont think harcore gamers is not really hardcore gamers if they are fighting over a motion control

DaTruth5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Natal is just a more advanced PSeye!

Motion wands is just a more advanced Wii-mote!

Which one, the PSeye or Wii-mote has ever been successful?

You have your answer!

But this is exactly what we were all worried about when we saw the ridiculous Wii sales; The end of hardcore gaming. I own a PS3 and Sony has 2 sequels to games that never sold well. But MS is where the money's at, so I feel real sorry for you all! Sony will continue making stuff I like whether it sells or not! Once something can make back the money, Sony doesn't lose a dime and it makes some gamers happy; They will continue producing!

ThanatosDMC5241d ago

HAHAHAH! Bungie's so funny. I swear, i think he's Why Dis or Crabs.

Anyway, 1:1 with the PSdil would be nice and apparently Natal would mocap properly... but hell do i care, i think standing around while playing a game will be a pain in the ass. I could just jog around the bayou or campus for that...

itisa5241d ago

Only to some of the people in a controlled and closed environment. Why all the secrecy.Natal is not working as advertised?

DMason5241d ago

Playstation site claims Playstation product is better. How original.

kparks5241d ago

Come on man!! i seen most ur videos on youtube im a ps3 owner and your obviously a ps3 fanboy and i dont know how this got approved u cant make a video of yourself and put it on N4G who keeps approving these things

marinelife95241d ago

That has to be the video of the day. I rolled when I saw the ending.

spacetattoo5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

For one, half of you don't own a xbox 360, so of course your going to answer the question as going for ps3 wand, I own both consoles, so with that being said.

I like how ps3 is more for hardcore games but who said you couldn't pick up a xbox 360 controller and stand up and use it as you are playing a game. not only that but you could use anything u want to simulate a experience. Either way I like the controller and will stick with it for hardcore games.....

for the casual games, I think natal has it in the bag.. holding on to a wand and hitting buttons is just another wii... a controller free experience is huge to people that can't use controllers or are just not good with them.

This will bring in people like my mom who has tried to play xbox or ps1 and just gave up due to button mashing and frustration. She already seen it on good morning america and wants one. So there you go a sale that is going to happen which would have never with a controller.....

either way, none of you are thinking outside the box. Natal has been talked about so much and most people never even heard of the ps3 wand.

So knowing that, who do you think is going to sell out the door? remember people are, no matter what your gamer needs are, are going to see the ps3 wand as another wii..
Natal is going to sell millions and not only that but it will make japan hop on the xbox 360 band wagon.....

with all the triple AAA titles and natal from M$, do not count them out.

THE PEOPLE BUYING NATAL DON'T CARE ABOUT HARDCORE GAMES...
THATS WHAT YOUR TO BIASED TO SEE.

Like I said, hardcore games need a controller and to put the wand and natal in that category is kind of missing the point, maybe you can use it but it doesn't mean you should. It would be fun until your nerding it out on MW2 and you are out of breath in 10 min. You will
just switch to your regular controller...

there you go. both will be cool but natal is new tech and new tech with the right backing sells well....

THIS ARTICLE IS FROM A PS3 SOURCE THAT IS AS BIASED AS YOU CAN GET

@Arnon I AGREE WITH YOU BUT THIS SITE IS REALLY BIASED AND YOU COULD SHOW THEM A MIRACLE AND SONY WOULD SHOW THEM A PIECE OF CRUD AND THEY WOULD CHOOSE SONY. Non like like you or me, this site doesn't understand a good piece of technology when they see one.

The Happy Baby5240d ago

lol. I guess thats how he gets all the ladies.

Waste of 14 mins. I truly hoped I would get something out of this, but alas, nothing.

Solidus187-SCMilk5240d ago

Which will have more potential? No offence being a gamer I am ok with a controller and mouse so if I'm perfectly honest neither for me.

PAPERCHASER03965241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Let's take a simple game of kick ball or even tennis... played online with natal are you telling me natal will be able to respond quickly enough to be fair to each player?....hell no... I have not seen an online versus demo yet or can somebody direct me to one.. and what about peer to peer servers does this create problems for Natal?

ThanatosDMC5241d ago

Remember the wiimote incidents with their TVs? Imagine people complaining about flinging their whole bodies at the tv and complaining! It'll be funny and moronic.

reintype5241d ago

NATAL: Camera
Playstation Motion Controllers: Camera + Wand

It's fairly obvious which one has more potential. While one can only do camera-based motion controls, the other can do that plus a whole lot more. Anyone who even thinks otherwise, needs a new brain.

deadreckoning6665241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

I agree reintype, but which one do you think the mainstream will BELIEVE has more potential?

@gold5225- "Natal is just the PSEYE or EYETOY with no controller...."

The Wii is just a GAMECUBE with Motion Controls, yet its been dominating this generation..whats ur point?

ZombieAutopsy5241d ago

Neither, theyre both gimicky peripherals that most likely wont catch on unless they are bundled with every console from launch....but thats just my opinion.

TheXgamerLive5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

even though the media ONLY talks about the XBOX "NATAL", and I've not even heard of what was it ps motion, lol, well i'll guess the biased ps supported droid will say the ps. ok, now I'll go and watch it and come back with an edit if I'm wrong.

edit HAAA HA, I was sooo right, lol, and the dude whom I swear with them ears is a disney character was trying to pretend what you saw w/natal was a finished product, you saw concept footage giving an example of it's uses, but dumbo only loves the sony dildo, ha ha, and wow was he boring, i almost lost it 3 times.

end result, natal has phenominal possibilities, and the sony dildo, well i can't say, i really saw nothing except some copies movies from the Wii.

EvilBlackCat5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

OMG this guys think he is the smartest dumbo in the room.

Whats next? Morganfell giving us some videos too?

People complain about Natal been a copy of the Eye Toy... HEY MORONS what with the NEW motion Control from PS3? Dont tell me that is different from the Wiimote!

HEY N4G... Why dont you guys instead of giving us GamerZone and OpenZone just give us one fncking zone because your PS3 ignorant fan base is treated with privilege.

Mike134nl5241d ago (Edited 5241d ago )

Simply because it allows for more creativity, this will ofcourse depend on the willingness of the developpers to spend time and sources on natal.
most importantly the software will need to be exceptional if they want to eliminate any potential lag.
One of my other concerncs with natal is definitely the accuracy.

Concerning the "gem" it has some similar problems like mentioned in the video that the camera will need to see the controller(s).

Find it a shame that the newton motion controller (from motus games) never made the market.

sinncross5241d ago

I don't think the PS3 motion controller needing to be seen by the camera is a problem of any kind.

If you are playing a game you'll be directly in front of, or in that vicinity, of the screen. What could you possibly do. besides being distracted or bored that would possibly make you move further away from the screen, or to not look at it?

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia10h ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator9h ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.
