Modern Warfare 2 Beats The Dark Knight for Sales Record

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has been one of the most anticipated first person shooters this generation, yes even passing Halo 3 with the hype. So with that in mind, who didn't know the game was going to set sales records? No surprise there, we all expected the game would most likely set some kind of a new record in entertainment sales. Not only was Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 one of the highest selling games this year by selling 4.7 million copies opening day bringing in some $320 plus million dollars but it also blew away Hollywood films to become the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever.

Did anyone not know this wasn't going to happen? Anytime a game is hyped sales are bound to happen especially when it's a trusted developer that has proved exceptional quality.

Same thing happened with GTAIV and Halo 3. These games have MASSIVE hype and are backed up the entire casual fanbase. It's no wonder they sell as well as they do.

That's how money is made for them. We all praise that very first time that a game comes out, we are blown away by it's epicness in both gameplay, story and graphics, than here comes the almighty Publisher asking the developer to milk the franchise and over due it's games, therefore turning a once great game into something that everyone is getting sick of.

This is why the movie industry is considered serious business.

Somebody tell the guy who wrote this that a $9 movie ticket is MUCH cheaper than a $60 game, and that The Dark Knight made $158 million in its opening weekend.

158 mil / 9 = about 17,555,555.5 people saw The Dark Knight in two days

335 mil / 60 = about 5,583,333.3 people bought MW 2 in about the same time

And who knows how much TDK made on dvd and blu ray. Modern Warfare 2's sales are impressive, but it's not "blowing away Hollywood"

of course it made more money it cost $60(and cost more in other places plus bundles and limited editions) a movie ticket is about $8 so even if more people seen the dark knight mw2 would still be able to make more.

Well the dark knight did live up to the hype and this game doesn't. Next modern warfare will be just more perks and map packs like this one was. Infinity ward is a mediocre and lazy developer that pretty much did nothing in the 2 years except for f*cking gamers straight up the ass.

because movies cant sell more than 200 million in lunch weekend(in a day!! hell no), 4000 places each with 3 screens full of people can produce about 200 million in 3 days.. but you can sell 3 billion copies of videogames in one day because there is no physical limit ..

and btw 60$ compare to 10-12$ ticket is a good point too..

but in ""production budget"" point of view, some videogames did hell of a good job lately.. Mega-hit movies cost more than 150million to produce but in video-game world devs can make 10 AAA titles with this amount of money.

These type of comparisons are like apples and oranges for the simple fact that:

One is a $60-149 game.

One is a $7-12 ticket.

And until MW 2 grosses over $1 billion like TDK (which is only 1 of 4 that have done that) at $7-12 (theater) and $10-20 (Dvd, Blu-ray), then we can talk.

It doesn't look like they gonna spend more time and budget to push the nextgen to the max.

Of course MS will offer exclusive DLC for their system. PS3 owners think that this is all MS can do, paying for some DLCs but 360 owners WANT these DLCS. Having 20 Million GOLD members means PPL are waiting for DLCs!

And what makes Sony?? They bring 10 exclusives per year dont care if the customer pay attention on it. Just look on demons sould or the new ratchet & Clank.. they didnt even reach 300k after 2 weeks.. thats fukn sad.!

Impressive. A video game beating one of the biggest movies to come out in years. Put your hate aside and you have to be amazed about this accomplishment. Games like Halo 3, GTA4, and MW2 paved the wave for video games to go beyond their realm. It's rare when you have a video game hit the mainstream. And when it does, all gamers should rejoice. Because when you have these type of games make serious money like this, you will have more interest for future big budget games.

The key here should be profit. If video games start stealing all the consumers hard earned money, Hollywood will take notice. Until that happens, movies will remain king. As much as I'd like to see video games gain some spotlight, I do believe the two can coexist. They're entirely different art forms. ; )

Hollywood has noticed. Peter Jackson was long rumored to be working on the next Halo. Not sure if this is still on the works or it was just a rumor but Hollywood has definitely noticed. Like I said in my previous post, this is just great news for all gamers because of the possibility of future big projects.

Oh and the only huge seller among video games (mw2, GTA IV, Halo 3 ect) that actually does the video game industry justice as art is GTA IV. Maybe mw2 but I haven't played it.

I still have my Dark Knight, but I traded in that steamy, stinky pile of poop MW2 yesterday. Congrats IW/Activision, you've made the first game I've regretted picking up in a long while. MW2 was garbage, and only saw the success that it did solely on the name and pedigree of the first MW. After beating this game I knew I'd never pick that crap up again.

It's not the best game this year, but it's close. A lot of MW2 haters cry cause they are no good. They blame it on auto-aim yet even KZ2 had auto-aim. Good MW2 players will be just as good at BFBC2 next year.

COD has taken Online gaming to the next level. Making the game accesable to even the most casual gamer. No longer do you even need to try and get better if your're not that good. Just join and become and instant camping killing machine.

Console gaming has indeed changed from the Starwars Battlefront days when you didn't have Auto aim assist for the noobs. You had a choice to turn the auto aim lock on or off.

I do agree with the camping tho. It is strategic if your a sniper, but if your an assault class you should be doing just that.
