Sonys Ego Cost Them Their Own Halo

Sony has had a ton of opportunities to capitalize on Microsoft some worked, and some didnt' but the most crucial missed opportunity was having Call Of Duty all to themselves. Sony would've been in such a bigger position than their in now but a couple of slip ups has kept them away from even greater strides they would've currently had.

I bought it for 360 and was playing it and was just thinking to myself that something felt off. Now I have only played cod on xbox 360 but really havent touched my 360 for a year and have been playing fps's on ps3 alot lately. Let me just say this, after I played my bros ps3 version of MW2, the problems went away because I have come to the conclusion that xbox 360 joysticks are way too imprecise. The ps3 joysticks are sooo much better and smoother imo. I am not making this up nor being biased. I bought it for 360 thinking it was going to be the best version but boy was I wrong, if you like better precision or better sound, the ps3 and pc version is where its at. Trust me!

COD4 was so big that an exclusivity deal with the next one would have been immense. IW's going to make a bunch of money with a multiplatform Call of Duty - how much money would be needed to recoup the loss of profits with a deal?

You've gotta pick your battles, and I think Sony has picked the right ones, staying with their core second-party companies and leaving a few multiplayer blockbusters to the entire market.

PS3 HAS its Halo. It's called Warhawk, it came out 2+ years ago, and it is light years ahead of Halo 3. Unfortunately, it was an early PS3 title and Sony didn't grease any palms, so it didn't get the press. It still has the best sound effects I have heard in any game on any platform, ever.

Halo is kiddie stuff that PCs were doing in the 1990s.

Oh Boy, for a few months I was actually feeling bad for HHG. So many people hate the guy. I listen to the Warzone and dude gets chewed out by all the fanboys in Tor's crew. But I cannot in good conscience defend the dude anymore.

How does one post an V-article (not my word) about a meeting that no-one knows actually took place or what terms where discussed, or the price tag attached. And just make up a scenario that somehow Sony's EGO was the cause of the deal breaker? So why even have a meeting if Sony's ego was so big? After CoD4 price of IP or even exclusive contracts skyrocketed to astronomical figures. After that, they could have only bought exclusive DLC for next game (just for 1 game) with $100 million, it wouldn't be enough for timed exclusivity. Exclusivity for next CoD may have cost $400-500 million and IP would probably have cost way past $1 billion (even $2 billion is possible). Price of exclusivity is high because revenue would have dropped by several hundred millions and they have to take in to account. And revenue of the franchise is huge so IP would have to cost huge money. Because Activision is in good financial shape, I don't think they would sell them for any less.

I don't think neither MS nor Sony IP would be worth that much considering sales would drop after exclusivity. CoD franchise should have been bought BEFORE CoD4 when it was relatively cheap.

@Frostypants - I see where you're coming from, and I really want to agree, but I just can't because of your last sentence - Sure, Halo is something that PC's did in the 1990's, but that's not a bad thing. Modern Warfare is something Halo did on the Xbox, Street Fighter 4 is something Karate Champ did on the NES, and Rez was nothing but Star Fox 64/Panzer Dragoon gameplay, and that's totally fine.

A big part of moving the video game industry forward is refining current assets. There was a great article a while back (I think it was in Kotaku) about how this current generation is about subtle changes to things like user interfaces, more cinematic experiences, the abolishment of loading screens (Tekken 6 notwithstanding), stuff like that, and I agree. You have to rehash certain stuff - in some ways, Dragon Age is just doing what Pong was doing in the 70's.

Just my opinion. I used to prefer the 360 controller for fps but I just changed preference. It is just a preference but it is a fact that the ps3 joysticks have less dead zone than 360's. I found it easier to go from 360's controller to the dualshock 3 than the other way around.

@talltony - THANK YOU. I've been saying that for a while, I like the 360 controller, and it is very good for shooters, but the sticks are not as precise as the PS3 controllers. I mainly had an issue with this on Halo 3, and was just after I had played Resistance 1. I noticed that Resistance 1 just controlled way more accurately than Halo 3, especially during sniper firing.

Theres no doubt that killzone exudes quality but i think the reason halo is so successful is because bungie for the most part gives its fans what they want. Halo on the other hand is full of creativity. Weapons and levels are full of sci fi bliss. The villains are full of variety and creativity. Everything about Halo screams originality. HALO is like Microsoft's equivalent of Nintendo's Mario. Microsoft built the Xbox brand around Halo, OF COURSE it's going to sell millions in a day. The thing about Sony is that they've never built the Playstation brand around 1 or 2 particular Sony 1st party franchises for more than one console generation except for maybe GT.

Gran Turismo is one of the few Sony 1st party games I can think of that Originally started on the PS1 that has had an iteration of it released on the PS3 (GT5P). Most of Sony studio's have always kept coming out with new IP's each gen. and Sony simply didn't go the Mario/Halo/Sonic approach where they built each of their consoles around one or two specific Sony game franchises.

Halo 1 was good, Halo 2 was good, and so was Halo 3, but it's been the same sh!t, so I don't understand all of the hype. I mean, did people just start playing Halo when 3 came out? Sales aside, a lot games surpass it. The game has been surpassed since COD4 released, and that launched in 2007. Sure sales are high for the game but the gameplay and formula is stale and old. After buying into the hype and getting 3, I was done with Halo games. When people act like Halo is god of gaming, it just drives me crazy. I still don't understand it.

@4.2: It's just marketing. Microsoft saturates all media channels with Halo coverage and promotions. Sony does a bit of TV but generally relies too much on word of mouth. Halo:ODST sold well due to natural human ignorance. It didn't even really get favorable reviews. Hey, marketing works!

It also had no co-op and no splitscreen. Halo allows 4 players to play online at once, KZ 2 cant even have local 2 player splitscreen. KZ 2 is good but there is no game that is made for multiple people at a time like halo 3. I think that reason so many bought it was because they were able to play it with a friend who had a 360 instead of sit around and watch and wait for a turn.

Killzone doesnt exceed halo in quality, if you think that your blind and know nothing about videogames. The Grafix were good(except the horrible looking fire) but everything else was standard.

Halo is Halo and you're either bored of the formula by now, or like millions of 360 owners you aren't-it's that simple. Noone can tell me there's ever been a great leap in gameplay post CE as there hasn't been, not that I've seen and up til ODST(which I rented for obvious reasons)I'd bought everything including DLC. I gope Reach vinally brings a bigger shift(while not killing what makes it a Halo game)in the gameplay as for me it's starting to feel and look it's age.

I don't agree that even Sony view KZ2 as their Halo either. I'd say Resistance is a LOT closer in terms of gameplay feel to Byhies monster seller and imagine a very strong R3 will point further to this argument.

When talking about Halo(which can be difficult seeing just how deffensive some fans are over this subject)it's important to remember just how important and synonymous it is with the Xbox brand. Without it's success on the first Xbox it's a reasonable argument to suggest we may not have seen the 360. Halo and Xbox feed each other and as such it's more similar to Mario on Ninty platforms than anything on Playstation, imo.

I won't argue the merits of HALO as a game, but as a franchise it is a MONSTER. EVERY one of the console companies would die to have a franchise that is instant money. Sure Multiplayer is fun, and it's the only game on the 360 to have a filming mode, and a forge mode, and Uncharted 2 is the game on the PS3 to have this feature besides the PSN games that have a direct upload to youtube, and Halo 3 is the only game to have a forge mode, but LittleBigPlanet has this, ModNation Racers has this, and GT5 might have this.

Had they released the full pack(for those who HADN'T bought the maps already) at a slightly cheaper price and a second even cheaper pack with just the new stuff people like myself would have bought it, it would have sold more initially and gone on to make amazing numbers. The "sluggish" controls(which were just different and more weighty and realistic to me-and gave a longer learning curve than the pick up and play likes of COD or Halo)gave it it's personality and their mistake was caving in to those COD fans who moaned about them but were always going to jump back to MW2 when it arrived anyway.

Well first of all, I think it's pretty safe to say that NOBODY (including Sony) ever thought that Call of Duty 4 would have turned out to be such an immense success, because before Call of Duty 4, the COD franchise was pretty well known, but it definitely wasn't as much of a Mainstream name that Call of Duty is now, so it's no surprise Sony didn't take a chance on it.

I think Sony made the right decsion to invest in their 1st and 2nd party this gen., because when you look at all the 3rd party Franchises that have gone Multiplatform, even if COD4 was only on PS3 it would've been only a matter of time before it hit the Xbox 360 because greedy Bobby Kotick wouldn't have it any other way regardless.

Sony already was investing a ton of money in Killzone 2, so I don't really blame them for not wanting to dish out loads of more money for yet another shooter when they were already building their possible flagship shooter. And you can't forget that Sony has a pretty large 1st and 2nd party, and were funding a SLEW of other big projects on top of KZ2, in addition to loosing a LOT of money early on from PS3 sales....You have to take into consideration many more factors HHG before you go mouthing off.

As far as Microsoft treating some big 3rd party games like 1st party games... well, they HAVE too because there's not as much going on in Microsoft's 1st party lineup compared to Sony's and Microsoft isn't supporting 3 platforms on the market at the same time like Sony.

There's no doubt that Sony was a little arrogant that the beginning of this gen., but Sony has humbled themselves for quite a while now, and I don't think their "Ego" has anything to do with not wanting paying for Call of Duty.

@cyrax you do have a point a game doesn't have to sell 4 million in a day to reach that number and be a success, but look at it this way the quicker you can get your return on investment the better it is for business. that goes for stock shares, financial reports, development of newer titles, and there's a ton of more situations that occur when the return on investment happens at a faster rate.

Also the perception on those type of titles ensures faster growth within the company that's making and publishing the title. gamers see halo, call of duty, and gta, gran turismo, god of war, and nothing else matters but halo, cod, and gta is on a higher level even gears of war is in that category. and within that list you have microsoft exclusives not sony exclusives in terms of that super record breaking fast return.

Uncharted 2 did a million in a week which is great but a game of that quality with multiplayer should've , and maybe the 3rd times the charm, but that should've done 1.5 2million day one i mean look at it.

If Sony had Call of Duty as an exclusive it would sell the same numbers as any other PS3 exclusive.

So why would Sony bother with CoD exclusivity when they already have their bases covered? People can choose Killzone or MAG or Call of Duty - Seems like a sweet deal to me!

Halo is the exception, not the rule when it comes to sales - so people really need to realise that we will probably never see another IP that sells in those volumes. Halo is MS' flagship title. It gets 30million+ dollars in advertising alone - that guarantees a certain number of sales irrespective of the quality of the product.

People also need to remember that Call of Duty is one of the biggest selling IP in gaming. To have it on one console would mean less sales, which means less revenue, which means less money available to develop the next CoD title - so it's arguable whether MW2 would be the game it is today if it was an exclusive. The developers get zero benefit by being exclusive.

Great post m,ate. I'd go further though-people just don't think about the way Halo became SO important to MS do they? It released at a very good time for it to grow among the userbase of the original Xbox and at the time offered what nothing else did on a console shooter.

This informed MS of the importance of getting in first on the console market and led to the rushed release of the 360-this didn't, however, work as well as Halo itself did because many gamers have a relayionship with Sony and Ninty from past generations and weren't as desperate for a hero to rally behind as Xbox gamers were with Halo.

The relationship is symbiotic if you ask me and MS know it-if Halo does well, they do well and they support it however they can as a result throwinga ll kinds of cash at doing so. A huge fanbase, a game which sells their system and a system you nuy to play Halo, no? Sony has NEVER had that kind of game.

Even GT, which is a bigger franchise than Halo if anything isn't AS im,portant to Sony as Halo is to MS or we'd have seen one for the PS3 by now(Prologue doesn't count and is like releasing ODST as the first Halo on 360). Not that when it lands GT5 won't sell loads and sell PS3s, it will, just not at the percentage Halo does for 360.

Halo, then, is in a unique position and should be seen as such. However the merits of one game being SO important to a console are limited at best and is like putting all your eggs in one basket which is why I'd have thought they'd have bought Hears lock stock and barrel by now. One game, even Halo, isn't big enough to warrant and attack on first place in the console race, imo, and the more spread demographic Sony support might be a better bet long term. Imagine, btw, if Bungie or whoever, made a really poor Halo or went too far unpdating it and angered the fanbase? THAT would be a disaster for MS-maybe not for that games sales but for the next one, certainly, and possibly for the health of the series and MS as a console maker.

I'm not digging them out but do think it's a little risky to have one game so important to your console model.

I'm not a big fan oh HHG but anyone with a internet connection, camera and a youtube account can become a game journalist. This site makes it worse by carrying straight gossip but I'm sure that's why most of us come here anyways.
I've played all the games being debated here and I'm not a big fan of Halo at all. It's cool to bash Halo, but it seriously takes dedication to get good at that game. I agree that the graphics have been weak but it is over 2 years old and yes ODST was made using the same engine but noone cared about graphics it was all about gameplay, ie: Firefight mode, multiplayer and co-op. I don't think it was a system seller but I guarantee this holiday season we'll see an increase of ODST sells and systems being moved.
Now my opinion on some of the PS3 games mentioned. I've played everyone mentioned and been part of the betas of said games too. I wasn't impressed with KZ2 at all, but I can see the appeal to it. I'm not gonna bash it, I just don't care for it. I enjoyed but Resistance games but I wished Insomniac would've done more with R2 after the release but they haven't. I can't say much about MAG seeing how I only played the beta so I will hold of judgement till it releases.
To anyone that's been playing MW2 on PSN knows about the issues that IW has had, but MS has had none of these. It comes down to MS hosting dedicated servers which what you pay for with LIVE.
I don't agree with making your fans pay for a weak demo (GT5). I'm sure it will sell millions though but that game has been in development almost as long as Prey/ Too Human and we know how that came out.
I'm just glad that I have been fortunate enough to own both systems and play great games on both. That's all

360 owners are FPS lovers mostly. The PS3 was more expensive, and the PS3 demography has shown that FPS are not record braking sellers.
If CoD 4 were PS3 exclusive, maybe the game would not be as huge as it is. And Sony not paying for exclusives is not ego, is company policy. The PS3 - It Only Does Everything.

How many people just purchased a Playstation 3 for the Blu-Ray player alone? I know for a fact people do this, they aren't worried about games they were looking for a great blu-ray player that is upgradeable via FW's.

There will never be a statistic for us to see how people use their PS3 for Gaming or for dvd/blu-ray playback.

THE PS3 HAS SOLD AROUND 27 MILLION PS3 SYSTEMS, VERSUS AROUND 32 MILLION XBOX 360'S. That is pretty good and damn near even in my book. (Not that is matters...both companies are making bank!) I don't know a ton about games, but I do know that Call of Duty has never been a exclusive. If I am correct, PC, PS1/PS2, and Xbox/Xbox 360 had Medal of Honor, which most of IW staff developed. Don't agree with anything said on this Vlog. Everyone has their opinion but nah, nothing here made me think Sony was wrong for not acquiring CoD as exclusive.

They already knew they had 3 FPSs coming down the pipe line and how much better KZ2 was than CoD4. Why would they spend money for yet another FPS back then? Nobody knows 100% how a game will be recieved and Had KZ2 released before CoD4, CoD4 would have looked weak as hell but it released first which is fortunate for them.

I think if both platforms released day and day with each other, things would be very different. Sony has also openly noted the trend of multiplatform games. This is why Sony has been building a set of first and 2nd party studios/relations, for years to come. Exclusives sell a console. Do you think a 3rd party exclusive where both install bases are equal is smart?

I think the ps3 fell into the "Worst Case Scenario". Xbox has stronger online features, while Nintendo had such a small price point. Most games were on both xbox and ps3.

Think about that. Its literally the worst case scenario for the ps3. I do think this generation was a full generational leap for sony and the hardware architecture, but i see sony reusing all this Cell/Bluray tech in the ps4. If they come back from where they were, this is a massive win for sony.

The Call of Duty series has always been better than the Halo series in every way. While I agree that if Sony had exclusivity with the CoD series it would have been a huge advantage, I've got to say there's no way that the exclusive deal would have lasted this long given the well documented greed of Activision. As far as Sony having their own Halo, there are more than enough generic FPS in the Sony library. In my humble opinion, there are only two FPS this generation that are substantially different from all the others. Borderlands and Bioshock. The co-op mode of Resistance 2 had lots of promise but wasn't nearly extensive enough in my book. The rest, including Killzone 2, are the same damn game with slightly different graphics, sound, and story. Couldn't care less who feels me.

Theres no way CoD would be an exclusive to any platform, activision make FAR too much money off all the platforms, and the 360 is the lead sale platform by a long shot. It wouldnt make logical business sense to even let any platform have exclusivity of CoD.

Why do these articles always appear with PS3 VS 360? I can understand the graphic comparisons for argument sake, but the way these articles are posted you would swear that each system owner owns a percentage of the company. Nobody cares who makes what money and who loses out on what. We buy the dam games and these things do not affect us. If Sony had COD to itself, we would still have to purchase it!

If they did take this offer (which they were never offered) they probably wouldn't have dropped the price and made a PS3 Slim. But if they were asked and they didn't put money into exclusives then Uncharted 2 might have been delayed into next year.

If it was a Sony exclusive and Sony was funding I'm pretty sure that Activision wouldnt even be in the picture as they only publish the games. If it was a PS3 exclusive I bet Sony would publish it, then again I dunno if Activision owns the CoD franchise or not.

Anyways what should have happened and what did happen are different and both have come and gone. Enjoy the game if you have it, thats all.

I don't think that's it, gametrailers.com has been caught several times maligning multiplatform games in favor of the 360 and lied about Super White and Full Color options not making a difference for PS3 images; when caught and confronted one time they blatantly stated that "there's nothing you can do about it". They also never gave a PS3 game over a 9.5, even though they themselves even admitted that some of those PS3 games were the best of or better than games that got a higher review score; but you don't hear the same calls of people demanding gametrailers to be taken off of N4G, or people insulting the staff for being provable low-lives.

Or how kotaku used to act, or how 1up used to be; no one called them disingenuous or spastic in terms of consistently; yet they made some of the worst articles known a year or two ago; which resulted in 1up being re-tooled, and the estrangement of Sony from kotaku for misusing Sony's trust a while back which subsequently made Sony pull advertising from kotaku... which resulted in kotaku posting a slew of negative Sony articles. Yeah, that's true journalism for you: fair and balanced all the way.

Or even the most extreme of fanboy B.S. articles (destructoid) from that guy jim sterling, he makes-up stuff without fact nor quote and yet none of his articles have been banned, nor have any articles been written about his obvious lack of journalistic integrity.

Yet, if another article is posted from any of those sites, not even the same magnitude of insults.

I don't know why yall hate on hiphopgamers videos. This particular one raises a good point of discussion.

There are probably alot of variables that came into play in the decision at the time. COD had/has a bigger install-base on the Xbox 360. Modern Warfare 2 would not have had quite as big of a launch had it been exclusive to PS3. Also, 360 fans would be in too much of an uproar and would demand the game be made for 360 as well. Look at how PC gamers are angry at their decisions. There are alot more 360 players than the PC gamers, the outrage would've been huge.

Or, perhaps the offer of "exclusivity" really meant more along the lines of having a delayed 360 port, in which case, it could possibly benefit Microsoft in the long run when you think of the particular online experience with friends that is synonomous with Xbox Live.

If 360 fans were willing to wait 6 months to a year, depending on how well Sony could migrate the user base to the PS3 Slim and improve their online experience in that time, the Microsoft fan base could use that against Sony by saying, "you know, you got it first, but we waited 6 months and you still don't have inter-game voice chat up to par" or stuff like that.

Also. Sony has already taken certain financial risk with the console itself and in pushing Guerrilla Games and Naughty Dog etc. Those 2 developers in particular spent alot of time and effort in making Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 graphically and generally overall superior to the 360s offerings, and are a proud mark for the PS3 brand. Whereas Infinity Ward has now made MW2 graphically as equal as possible between both platforms. They may have been more persuaded to make a better game if they signed an "exclusivity" deal perhaps, but then would Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 have stood out as much? In the 2009 time frame?

I'd like to hear one of the top Sony execs respond as to why they have adopted that philosophy of not acquiring exclusivity rights from their investments in 3rd party developers.

I want to know why people assume Modern Warfare 2 will not sell as well on PS3. I can't wait to see some legit sales numbers. I don't think any games should be exclusive anymore. I'm missing out on 360 exclusives because I refuse to buy another 360 after my RROD x2 experience. Not really fair IMO.

I'll tell you why these events HHG described don't even have a probability of being true. Infinity Ward can't go to Sony and offer them an exclusivity deal on Call of Duty. Infinity Ward does not own Call of Duty, Activision does. I highly doubt Activision, being the money lovers they are, would offer Sony exclusivity on a Call of Duty on a game when they can easily triple their profits with two other versions of the game.
