How is Microsoft going to surpass the Gran Turismo 5 experience with so little space, I don't know. If Sony knows how to play its cards, Gran Turismo 5 will use a double layered Blu-ray disc.

Edit: Oops, I was beaten at the punch. Sorry "The Executive", it can't be done. All teams, fields, etcetera have to remain on a single disc, otherwise the game would be unplayable in terms of usability.

Edit 2: For more clarification. I say it would be unusable since you must be able to stream all the assets required real time. If you have to change discs for certain teams, that would be awful. If two teams are on different discs, then you're screwed. Obviously that would never happen, since nobody would make a game that is not usable. Therefore, it's always better to have more disc space.

I know you'll say Xbox 360 has an HDD, but it's not on every machine, and 13 Gigabytes just won't last. Sure, there's the Elite, but very few own it or want it. If only you could add any HDD you wanted, but you can't. So basically, you can't install parts of the game on 360's HDD. Therefore, 360 owners are screwed.

It's not a narrative/linear sort of thing, so putting it on two discs won't work at all. It's almost like GTA: Imagine you having to switch discs everytime you enter the limits of another area/city. It just wont work... A very similar case with sports games.

Amazing how people never learn....just like RFoM was 22 gb when it was in reality less then 5 gb, and elder scrolls, the PS3 bluray drive is too slow so they need to fluff it out so it runs faster, taking up more space on the PS3...it'll be quite a long time till any sports game takes up more then a DVDs worth of space under normal circumstances.

firstly more gb doesn't equal better game. Full HD does offer a more immersing experience (meaning if you have a HD tv)
10 extra GB could be useful to run a full hd game smoothly.

Even though the ps3 version might be better the game will still sell better on the xb360 cause of the larger install base. Especially in europe,where soccer is popular and sony launched their console kinda late.

how many xboxes do u think have been sold in europe dude. for pro evo heads (playstation 2 owners ) this might be a system seller and the fact that i hear and know 360 owners who prefered the ps2 pes over the 360 version in inself shows there was something wrong with the 360 version (Not saying the ps2 version was great). it was slow and felt a bit floaty but that might of been because of the d pad which isnt the best on the 360 pad and playing with the anolog sucks for football games. Pro evo was made for playstions. Once it got its hands on it, it was curtains for any other plats version period. Elders scrolls reuses a lot of textures and voices are heavily compressed. Because of heavy compression of data (think zipping), the game loads very slowly too, which is why Bethesda made PS3's port of Oblivion install on harddisk just like the PC version which was designed for HDD installation anyway.

If this turns out to be true and I was Microsoft, I wouldnt bother having the game on the 360 in the future, that seabass bloke was going on about the 360 being a next generation console, so if the article turns out to be true, they are forcing many gamers who own a next gen system to feel left out which is very wrong and will start a idiotic fanboy war. Despite Pro Evo 6's problems on the 360, it sold very well and if Konami have one brain cell between them they would make a just as good 360 version because at the end of the day money matters and a lot of people in europe by xmas 07 will still own a 360 and not a PS3. The PS3 will really take off here in europe next year, when the price comes down. £400 for a console with no games is just silly. When I say no games I mean bundled with the system at purchase. The PS2 has like 32mb of RAM and it uses 2GB for PES. PS3/X360 has 16X that amount of RAM so 18GB is actually pretty believable. Don't forget multi languages and sounds; PES is a UK title.

Ok, you know what's funny to me.. How people can really complain about something that really wasn't a problem before. For example, I know Final Fantasy had more disc to switch out, and no one had a problem with it. The player would get his happy a$% up and change the disc and keep playing. Now, all of a sudden it's a problem? If MG4 had taken up 4 disc people will still skip down to their nearest game store and buy it. It's getting ridiculous now. Now to me, there is no way in hell a sports game needs that much memory something doesn't seem right or we are getting half the information as of right now. People should appreciate that more disk space will always be better than less. At some point developers at the cutting edge will always use the maximum disk space you give them - this is a fact of life. Computing capacity has always grown over time. Cassette tape => 5 1/4 inch floppy => 3 1/2 inch floppy => CD => DVD => Blu-Ray/HD DVD. It's the nature of the business. The same people who said 18gb is not needed are the same people who said DVD weren't needed. Technology moves on and in this era of High Definition there will be no such thing as too much disk space - those who say it is not needed are clearly not learning the lessons of the past.

you guys obviously missed out on the point i was trying to make. i myself follow 7 european leagues like it's my second religion, watch any soccer match thats on tv even if i dont know much about the teams or players playing, and play the wonderful game myself. i constantly bs with those american types you mislabeled me to be as, bragging on how the world cup far exceeds spectators than both the world series and super bowl combined by as much as 4 fold.

There will no doubt be two versions of the game. There is no way to play a sports game on two discs, it's just ridiculous and defeats all logic. They will develop one game specifically for the Playstation 3, and one for the XBOX360. It may or may not be the same game in the end, but chances are, they'll be close, but different enough to warrant a entire team to develop for it separately.

in order to fit on one disc; they don't have much of a choice. It's impossible to ask users to swap discs because so much data would have to be made redundant that 3 or 4 discs would be needed then.

This is exactly what Sony has been pushing for, and in fact they are providing tools and guidance for 3rd party developers so that PS3 is the primary development platform. They have a right to say this as it's easier to port from the PS3 to the 360, and not the other way around (redundant programming functions, etc). EA has been tossing around this idea (as evidenced with Madden 07's higher-res textures), but we'll see how far such developers actually utilize Blu-ray's enormous capacity.

If this is true, bravo to Konami for taking advantage of the console with the most potential, not just porting over the weakest version. This is why I agree with the "Start on PS3" philosophy. I wish Rockstar were doing the same. It makes no sense to handicap this generation because of machines with different capabilities and Xbox owners AREN'T going to get a worse version then they would have anyway. It's hard for people to understand but the majority of multiplatform games were built on the X360 first. Which is why they look bad when they reach the PS3.

Okay now think the PS3 is a lot harder to code for than the X360.(Devs says this all the time). So the workarounds are that much more difficult to implement. (Make sense?)

Now if they were ported from the PS3 to the 360, the 360 is a lot easier to code for which means that devs will find it a lot easier to make it look exactly like the PS3 version. (and even in some cases better)

If you want to see what PS3 is capable of, you shouldnt be comparing the Xbox, PS3 versions. You should compare the crappy ports PS3 has recieved to the 1st party or exclusive games. Thats a much better indication. Dont look at CoD3 and say PS3's no good. Worse framerate. Its an Xbox game on PS3. If the want to compare it to something look at Resistance. That runs like melted Butter. Dont compare 2 versions of Blazing Angels, (even thou this is one port that actually looks a little better). If you have to compare, compare it to Warhawk or Lair. Compare in to something built for the machine from the ground up, because comparing games that were built for Xbox and then made to run on PS3 prooves nothing. It is slightly fairer if they were both developed at the same time but even then its no real indication. You want to know what PS3 can do. Look at the games being developed for IT from scratch.

PS I hope you dont think I'm have a go at you, I just wanted to say that and your post gave me a good spot to do it. Also I wouldn't be surprised if VF5 did look as good or even slightly better on Xbox given the extra time and I'm guessing they decided quite a while ago to put it on X360, but lets say they wanted to make a game with 50 characters, all with CGI endings. And a large quest mode. But then said it wont fit on DVD, let scrap that. Would you still not think the PS3 version had been held back? Devs are probably asking themselves alot of those questions right now. They have to decide in the beginning afterall, not halfway throught. What has blu-ray video games accomplished so far??? Resistance used most of the blu-ray and it only accomplished 10-12 hours of gameplay with average/good graphics. Motorstorm also used most of the blu-ray disc and it only had about 5 tracks. Not impressed by the inclusion of blu ray in the ps3.

I'm saying its not a fair comparison because most were developed with Xbox in mind. Xbox got them first, PS3 got a sloppy port. It not a good indication of PS3's power. Thats why I said why not compare a similar game to a PS3 exclusive.

Besides I'm not one of these guys claiming PS3 will just blow Xbox away, PS3 just happens to be my favourite. Personally I think the graphics between the 2 wont be the biggest difference, it will be the scale possible and the amount of action on screen at once, not necessarily how pretty that action is.

Why 4 Live Arcade games (released in a pack) takes 7 GB, while I own some of them on PC and they are less than 20 MB.

As mentioned before the compression helps a lot and developers don't have time to write longer game couse if they've written 9GB of pure game without movies and sound their progress would be similar to Duke Nuke For(n)ever.

A 2 hour 1080p movie can be in standard format(BR,HDdvd) and it would take let's say 20GB - a 2 hour movie in H.264 would take only 4GB.

Similar is for audio.

Sure there are plenty of methods of making data fit into a DVD9..but not all data is the same. What exactly is the advantage of H.264 codec of mpeg4 @1080p?? Do you know the difference between uncompressed 7.1 surround sound audio versus a compressed format? There is a difference. Sure you could compress the hell out of all your movies/sound and repackage it. But why would you do this if there was a medium that allowed you to store all of this data without compression? I don't understand why people are waging a war against a higher capacity medium? What is so wrong with being able to store massive amounts of data and having uncompressed hd audio? What is so wrong with a game being 18gb? I mean extra stadiums, teams, leagues, high res textures, better commentary...is this really that threatening? I think you are too optimistic about size - If there were more stadiums of course I would want them, but every stadium has to be built (drawn) and in 1 year (a cycle that this game is released) we can only see some of them. I'm saying that stadiums takes time to draw (and not as many size as 30 minutes of uncompreesed video). I would like to see each and every stadium if that would be possible. But I gladely would watch CGI compressed with h.264 and 5.1 wma comppresed sound at high bitrate if they would really used all remaining space for gameplay, tactics and physix.

Graphics don't equal the size of game. The optimised game engine could make "miracles" in graphics look. Not a single PC game yet needed more than 4GB if we cut out videos. More possible significatly less - arround 1,5GB (Rips) or just enough with videos. I'm not saying that games won't get bigger. But not in this so called next-gen.

I still remember how game was made when CD's came out. Almost every game jumpped from 50-100MB to a whole 650MB. But you could get pirated versions of CD's with 10 (sometimes 50) ripped games in 1 CD. The remaining space was used for videos (mostly uncompressed avi's), wav files or just demo's. I think the history repeats.

I don't think its changing disks that bothering people. It's the fact that so many are against having a higher capacity medium, and are willing to settle for DVD9 when so much more can be done w/ blu-ray and hd-dvd. The fact that they would settle for only 4 voice actors, when you could have 20+, the fact that you could settle for reused assets when you could have numerous in game assets. Does this make any sense? All of these comments sound the same, it just sounds like you are ok with a game being good, not great as it could have been...I just don't understand why people are fighting the fact that game developers can and will use the extra space on blu-ray..switching disks is not that big of a chore...but for a sport game you really can't do that. This is especially true because not all xbox's are guaranteed to have a hard drive to cache data.

As reported by the Naughty Dog Developers the demo level of Uncharted is already too big for a dvd. Factor 5 has already admitted to using more than 16gb's, Resistance- a launch title used the same, so what then is the basis of your comment? I already know the responses I'm going to get, but..but teh compression. but..but..teh graphics is not teh gears. Denial is not a river in Egypt. This is not an attack on xbox fans or ps1h1ch. More so my observation on responses to comments such as these. We will have to wait and see what differences there are between this title for either system. I have a PS3 so dont attack me.

Its for padding to decrease the load times of the game and on top of that you will probably still have to install most of the game onto the hard drive to make it load a bit quicker.

Am also assuming it will have in game HD movies etc things that are NOT required.

They will most probably have less intro movies, less victory movies for teams etc.

And most probably split the teams - national teams on one DVD and premier league teams etc on other DVD. Meaning you most probably on XB360 will not be able to play Liverpool against Germany national team etc.

Not the biggest deal in the world - well... for me anyway as I don't plan on getting a XB360.

And no - it is not for "padding" to improve loading times. They will rather use disk caching for that - easier to do - and simply a football game is not going to need very high streaming speeds.

Blu-Ray is too small for a game like spore. The only way for a game like spore to work is if everything is generated procedurally.
