First image of new Cel-Shaded Borderlands

Gearbox's amazing looking RPG Shooter has been out of the spotlight for quite some time now, and for good reason. Behind closed doors Borderlands has gone with a completely new style, once a gritty looking shooter is now going to be sporting an interesting and visually striking cel-shaded style and boy is it looking great!

I hope that is how the game looks. Do developers realize that games like wind waker, PoP, and VC are timeless due to their art style? Just a thought smart move on this devs part because the game will hold up 10 years from now and never will look dated.

It's great to see some dev houses actually attempting to be "non generic",have some style and creativity. Enough of the "safe cookie cutters" already...Too many brown/gray grunge follow the herd games.

This is more along the lines of POP.An "Illustrative-painterly style",concept art brought to 3D...Fresh and out of the mainstream,a risk for them I am sure,at least somewhat.But if all things gameplay/tech wise work out,one risk that can pay off for them and for players...

Overall a promising style,I look forward to more details....

Hard to tell if the images used in that box contain some in game or if it's all still just mock up drawings in concept art.

The upper left image looks to be in game and if it is could lead to a very promising game in terms of just art style.

I'm sure E3 will be when they draw up the curtains to unleash what they've really got planned for their game. It'll be an interesting one to pay attention to.

Bold move, hope it pays off. I wonder though why the change? Was there something they didn't like with the direction it was going? I'm currently playing PoP and that has benefited well from the handdrawn look.

Well cell shading with some incredible lightning, shadows, and art might be very impressive. I guess they didn't want to compete with rage and decided o give us something different.

I had lost a little bit of interest in this game, but ever since I played Valkyria Chronicles I've had a soft spot on my heart for cell shaded games. I think this actually helps the game a lot. It can make somewhat bland visuals look more impressive in my opinion. For example, textures can be less detailed but still just as striking, where as if they went for a more realistic look and didn't quite achieve the right look it becomes immediately noticeable.

I dig it! I love when companies try new things with visuals. Just for that I'll be giving this a try.
You're right though, very prince of persia. I'm glad they finally realized that cell shading can have detail too... ha ha. Took them a while.
I bet the lighting will be great.

i think it looks great, and honestly, considering how "me too" shooters are these days, some identity and uniqueness are welcome.

Prince of Persia set itself apart from other action/adventure games with it's art design.

Valkyria Chronicles did the same.

Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, etc are other titles that have their own unique feel and style that makes them instantly recognizable, and therefore a breath of fresh air for gamers.

other games simply don't bother to do that, and look like they have simply copy pasted the assets that come with Unreal Engine 3.

it's really nice to see that there are some developers out there that aren't so afraid of what the mainstream market may think of their game that they don't take chances on presentation and art design.

they all look the same but have a different setting, while games like tf2 and halo3 tend to seperate themselves apart more by using NPR(none photorealistic rendering) to achieve a more distinct look.
