Colin McRae: Dirt Preview - Colin's latest stuns CVG with shocking realism

CVG visits Codemasters to check out Colin McRae: Dirt.

"We'd seen the impressive screenshots for Colin McRae: Dirt but we were totally unprepared for the actual visual treat Codemasters has put together with the sixth instalment in their rally series.

Seriously, those shockingly realistic screenshots are absolutely true to the in-game graphics. We seen it and played it. The scenic detail in Colin McRae: Dirt is astonishing. Playing it on a sweet 40-inch HD TV, we could see every blade of grass in the thick forestry that lines the dirt tracks as we raced along.

When you drive on the grass you can see it bend as it folds down underneath your car. Look behind you and you'll see the grass remain compressed as you drive away. It's not that there's never been nice grass in games before, it's the sheer amount of it that's impressive. The grass is so thick it forms a gorgeous furry texture that covers the banks.

Compare this to the usual flat green texture with the odd stick off solid grass you see in other racers - PGR 3 and Gran Turismo HD included - and you can see why this is special."

This game is multi, Codemasters even developed the graphics engine in collaboration with Sony to make it as Ps3-friendly as possible =)

edit: *I noticed that the preview is of the 360 version and not Ps3*

Btw, the game looks fekin' ment'l!

I know about all the things you mentioned senced they were anounced, like you realized!; these guys are talking about the 360 version. This game ownes MotorStorm graphiclly and techiclly game vs game and as the milestone of offroad racers. Never mentioned PS3 or 360 at least you edited your comment a PS3 fan would have ran with the missunderstanding/right or wrong.

Reguardless of the graphics engine" i'd like to see if the PS3 version can atleast match the 360 graphiclly( I wonder if they will use more than one core in this title and the extra RAM to set it apart or will they feel more obligated to make them the same due to Sony's involvment(save Sony some face at the cost of handi capping the 360 version to match the PS3 version).

RAIST" I know 360 games have used more than one core what's you point?, see what i mean when i say PS3 fans will twist missunderstandings and run with it, again i hope they use more than one core to the fullest. HOW DID YOU GET NOT KNOWING WHAT HAS BEEN DONE EAIRLY ON OUT OF" HOPING THEY USE MORE OF THE 360's POWER THAN THE AVERAGE GAME?.

#12 this is part of the story: "Compare this to the usual flat green texture with the odd stick off solid grass you see in other racers - PGR 3 and Gran Turismo HD included - and you can see why this is special.":

^^^You see they have compared the two sub genre's themselfs before the posters. MotorStorms style is arcade but what was suppose to be acheived was a graphical & phyiscs milestone; that's universal, sorry!. Fighting is the only real differnce the rest was to put the most pretty, physics based game out and it looks like it has just been beaten in the offroad racer sub-genre. It's a multi plat game it has everthing to do with comparing console's folks do care about 360 vs PS3 $300 and $500 bucks is a grip of cash.

The worry isn't so much how a game looks PS3 vs 360 anymore as they seem to be more worried about how it runs now.

"I wonder if they will use more than one core in this title"

Considering that even launch games for the 360 use 3 cores, I'd say there's a great chance it's the case for CMR : Dirt.

I can't believe there are still people that believe this "360 games only use one core" christmas tale.

D+PAD Magazine: Colin McRae: DiRT 2 Review

The first DiRT title was released just before McRae's horribly premature passing, and saw Codemasters essentially rip everything up and start again, giving the franchise a face-lift fit for the next-generation. It highlighted the tone of a series moving increasingly further from the realistic, 'pure' brand of rallying in the earlier games to a more arcade-orientated, thrill-seeking approach. Whether seduced by the bright-lights of, for example, Project Gotham Racing, or whether Codemasters were just seeking change for the sake of change lest creative stagnation take hold, DiRT 2 (yes the strange lower case 'I' is intentional) represents the consolidation of this new approach.
