Confirmed: Mass Effect 2 not on PS3

BioWare today officially announced Mass Effect 2, the sequel to the acclaimed sci-fi RPG Mass Effect.

Is this game available on the PC? I only ask because, together with my Ps3 I also have a decent PC rig... If I get sick of all the Ps3 exclusives and feel the need, which I doubt will happen, to play yet another decent game then I'll just pick it up for my PC.

Mass Effect was definitely underrated. Easily the best game of 2007. The story, gameplay, characters... everything was just awesome. A few times I just stopped at watched the sky on a few planets and it was incredible.

I'll say it one last time: MS has a deal with Bioware. How many Bioware games have ended up on a Sony console? When EA bought Bioware it didn't nullify any outstanding contracts they had prior to the merger.

Played Oblivion. Played Fallout 3. Played Lost Odyssey. Played Fable 2. Mass Effect is a notch above all of them.

OK, I'm not going to try to say that it's coming to PS3 or even that I think it's coming to PS3, BUT, I will argue semantics: This is not a confirmation that the game is not on PS3. This is a confirmation that it's on the 360 and the PC, with "no mention of the PS3." Failure to mention a platform is not the same thing as confirming that it won't be coming to that platform. Especially with Game Developer's Conference next week, why would they announce it coming to PS3 in a press release when they could do it at a major show? Again, the likelihood is slim, but this is not technically a confirmation that it won't be on PS3.

lol.. it had lack of polish because the unreal engine & the 360 couldn't stream load it to save its life. Just like Gears 2 wasn't bigger, badder or more badass. Expect the same lumbering stumble to the 1.5 version. But hey, we gotta wait till 2010 to see anyway.

while Im sure that this is an excellent game to many, I have both the 360 and later PC version and didn't finish either one. As a matter of fact I played about two levels of the PC version and realized that even without the glitchfest the 360 provided this game is actually REALLY DAMN BORING.

It looks like its unlikely that it will come to ps3 at least not at the same time, but really I wouldn't care if it did....I already know its coming to 360 so I'll be playing ME2 on the same platform I played the original on. Mass Effect is hands down the best RPG I've played this gen, hell is it really a RPG? I'm sure the few technical issues will be ironed out but hell I'd take ME2 with the same technical issues over many other RPG's with no framerate hiccups, seriously this game is fcking good....hell I advise ps3 owners to actually put their money where their mouth is this time and really get the PC version if they don't own or want the 360 version. for all the disagreers i just don't want you to get the impression that i am spoiling your party on me2 being exclusive. just check my xbox gamer profile (anhduong) you will see i have 29 xbox 360 games and one of them includes me. i got no gamer points on them because i am using a new profile. i.e. i have no reason to hate the xbox.

anyway, my point is mass effect 2 is 100000% coming out on the ps3. it will be out around 9 months to a year after the xbox version but it is coming nontheless. i used to work at EA a long time ago and my source says it is a timed exclusive.

as a further give away the EA press release never mentioned that the game was an xbox eclusive and nor did it mention that the game wasn't coming to the ps3 - it only mentions what console the game was going to appear on but no comment on whether it would appear on the ps3. hence every EA press comment going forward will be that the game will appear on the xbox 360 but no denial that it won't appear on the ps3.

Is it really that important anyway? It's not out for another year! There are so many cracking games on the PS3, both right now and over the next 12 months, so who really cares?

If it turns out to be THAT good, I'll grudgingly get it for PC. I'm just disappointed that EA haven't tried to widen the availability of the game to those of us with superior tastes in games consoles.

... was quite honestly bad. Worse than FO3 and definitely worse than ME. Sorry, but it's the truth. DEMON'S SOULS, on the other hand... that's an excellent ARPG on the PS3, but I digress.

As for ME, my biggest complaints with that game were:

1) slow framerate (price of the graphics)
2) repetitive grinds (but it's an RPG so I shouldn't complain)
3) ridiculous loading screens

I was hoping a PS3 version would alleviate at least #1 and #3, but oh well. I hope that Bioware will at least implement some sort of HDD install option so that those elevator scenes can be cut down or eliminated.

I mean, seriously... going ONE FLOOR up within the Normandy takes nearly 20 seconds!! And this is supposed to be the future where people are traveling faster than the speed of light with the discovery of the "Mass Effect"??

i dont really see where or when anyone who owns a ps3 hates on pc gaming, pc gaming and console gaming garner to totally different crowds. i, personally, like both, for different reasons.

you can get a gaming rig that can play pretty much anything now for under a grand, and if you build it yourself, itll cost you like 500 bucks, parts are so cheap now.

i stand fast by the belief that ps3+pc is definitely the way to go, because the pc version is usually vastly superior to the 360 version, and in terms of shooters kb+mouse eat the 360 controller for breakfast. if it comes out on 360, it is probably coming out on one of the two other platforms. if its a big title on ps3, ie kz2, its staying on ps3. even computers that people buy for every day usage can run most games at decent settings, and it takes like 100 bucks to upgrade it to the point where it will run the game on par with consoles.

When they released Bioshock they didn't say it was coming out for the PS3 either. Simply not mentioning a PS3 version doesn't mean that one isn't being worked on and given EA's love of money I don't feel that they would just sit on such a hot IP and not port it over to take advantage of another 20 million potential customers.
Also, Bioware hired all those PS3 programmers for a reason. It might be for Dragon Age or the new KOTOR but we will see Bioware games on the PS3. That's a given.

Yea its to early to tell. Who knows, sony might want them to hold of the announcement until gdc or e3, just to give a little stab in the back to MS like they did last year with FF. Or it might be as simple as ME2 being timed exclusive to 360 in which case EA is likely to announce ME1 for release on PS3 this fall and ME2 will follow a year later.

Regardless ME2 is not hitting this year so MS still desperately needs some more games for this year. And ive heard rumors that MS dont have a keynote at GDC. If they dont announce something soon then its starting to get a little late for announcing games that will come out this year. Whatever games they announce at e3 is likely to be either casual games or games that will release next year. And since MS have said they try cater more towards casual games this year i have a bad feeling we arent gonna see much more core games announced for this year and just some casual games instead.

...EA needs money since they took a loss. If they were UP, then I can understand this business venture. That's why I'm so perpexled by SQUAREENIX. In the way, I think they could've done a way to make the UE engine work on the PS3. It was worked before in other games. Well in the end, it doesn't really matter. It's a good game(I played it last year) and I hope they fix some of the freezes and glitches from the first one.

Someone mentioned that they are going to carry the save file from the first one. If that's the case, then it makes sense not to port it, unless they were going to come out with the first one on the PS3. But then again, is the save carrying over portion that important? Anyway, there are tons of games coming out for both systems, and that's what matters.

For example, EA is a third party company. That's a variable. EA didn't do so hot the last fiscal quater. That's another variable. I loved the first on 360. It's a shame that PS3 owners aren't (apparently) getting to experience the second. However, it does make sense a bit, as it is a continuing story. In fact, if they were going to put ME2 on PS3, they almost would have to port the first one as well just so new players aren't jumping into a universe in which they know nothing about. There's just way too much politics and story in the game to play this sequel without hitting up the original.

Well, the intellectual property rights to every single game that Insomniac makes are owned by Sony, so you can't really expect Insomniac to make Ratchet & Clank or Resistance multiplatform. The Mass Effect rights are not owned by Microsoft, so the developers and publishers are allowed to put it wherever they want. It's not quite the same as with Insomniac's games.

I think a large part of it is continuity, in order to provide the same ME2 experience on PS3 as players have on PC and X360, they would have to first release ME on PS3. This hasn't happened yet, and I'm not saying it won't, I'm just saying if it does, it will be a while.

Well I have a high end PC, and a ps3. Why would I have a ps3 you ask? Well idk, maybe because SONY exclusives don't get released on PC. Then for multiplats I got re5, and then on my PC i have L4D on steam. My PC stays loaded with fps/rts/rpgs...etc.. Console games that either don't come out for PC, or are best to play on the couch with a controller go to my ps3.

You can also build a very good gaming rig for little cost.

I've read recently that the hd4870's should be priced around $149 and will probably upgrade just so I can play at insane resolutions on my new 40" hdtv. I agree. They should have quoted the entire press release but instead they decided to omit any bit where it mentioned formats to be released on, therefore it's hardly concrete proof of anything.

However, there really is little point in releasing this game on the PS3 without the first one so I think they'd have to announce that first before they announce the sequel or to be fair what is more likely is that it's going to just stay exclusive. This article however is not 'confirmation' of either.

Unless you see the 1st ME pop up on the ps3, then you won't be seeing the 2nd one. ME2 is going to be using your saves to continue the story, so it wouldn't make much sense to release just the 2nd one on ps3. Obviously if you played the game, then your going to want to get it on the 360 again since that's where your saved games are.

I am a Sony Fan but I have ME on 360 and loved it and even if ME2 was multiplat I would buy it on the 360 because of that.

Anyone notice that the title does not represent what the article states. The articles only confirms that ME2 is coming to 360 and PC. It does not say that ME2 is not coming to PS3. Truth be told I doubt it makes it to PS3 but could we please have more accurate titles such as:

Would I consider getting it on the PS3? I own the 360 version and the PC version of the first one. If they get rid of that ridiculous Mako, do something about those horrid textures, actually let us explore the galaxy instead of one planet in a system that is barren as hell and has one building within the 1 kilometer space to explore, and they remove the damn elevator screens while fixing your dirt ignorant AI buddies. Then and only then will I consider getting the game.

I would rather spend my time in The Witcher. 70 hours is the average on the first play through with 5 distinct endings. And a game where choices actually matter. Or as I stated elsewhere I will drop in Valkyria Chronicles. Or by the time ME2 launches, Versus. This is all machts nichts as the game will likely do a Bioshock.

Anyone else worried? They still have to crank out a third one before the console cycle is up, and they really had their hearts set on doing the whole trilogy on 360. I'm starting to doubt that the 360 will be MS's console in 2013, especially since they keep losing exclusives (like this) to PC and/or PS3. They're probably going to try to jump-start the next console cycle again.

But, we'll see. Hopefully they release these two versions at the same time, but if not, I still have my save on 360 from before I sold my 360 version back so I guess I'll gamefly it and then buy the (if ME1 is any indication) superior PC version.. for $10 cheaper. woot?

Mass effect will never come to PS3, why? because everybody knows ps3 owners would rather play the PC version of the game. Reason why bioshock did't sell so well? They had already played the PC version. I'm sure if killzone 2 had also been on PC it would only of sold a handful of copies, and only then so people could compare it to the PC version

I agree. PC version is ALWAYS better, unless it's a port from console, in which case it's USUALLY better, but not always (like Gears of War, for instance). The Halo 1 port was a pretty good port from what I remember, but the gameplay felt archaic next to the plethora of PC shooters it borrowed from.

But yeah, I always feel that there's hardly ever a reason to get a game on a console over a PC when they're made at the same time. The PC version will always look better, and even if your PC can't run it high enough for it to look better than the console version, EVENTUALLY you'll have a PC that can, even if it's 10 years from now, and when you go back and play that game you'll re-experience on a new level. The only exceptions I've made to this have been Dead Space and Prince of Persia, only because the controls are much better on console.

If ME 2 is anything like the first one count me out. It had some of the worst pop in Ive ever seen in any game. Load times were way to long. The game play is what killed it. The game play in that game was way to boring. I must admit it had a good story. Next time maybe they should use a different engine instead of the unreal engine. Its pop in is horrible.

there are loads of PS3 owners that saw this game as the ONE game they'd want from the 360 library. This for me was/the only game on the 360 that made me sit up.

I didn't get to play it to a significant degree and if/when I do I may be disappointed as some have been but I'm more than willing to find out for myself with this game.

I do know that what I played of the 360 version that reviewers didn't tell the community about some serious lagg and texture popping and I still think, judging from other Epic exclusive PS3 titles, what could this game have been using the PS3 as it's main development platform.

I am not just sure but 100% sure ME will be on the PS3 and I'm looking at E3 cause if EA is to announce this and state the lead platform is on the PS3 (cause of their earlier experiences with having bad ports from the 360) then there'll be much wailing and nashing of teeth in the 360 base for sure.

Regardless though, from what I've seen, ME is a great game that many PS3 owners would like to see on their platform and it's clear that they'll get their wish.

The article or Bioware have made no 'offical' announcment about a PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 (at all). That is not the same thing as "Mass Effect 2 not on PS3". Tecmo didn't mention the PS3 version of Ninja Gaiden 2 for the PS3, but it is still coming.

Most likely it will be a time exclusive as MS needs it. EA. Knows that this year is really hard to compete against PS3 exclusives.

I could play this on PC or 360 if I wanted to but I'm not really an RPG fan so not concerned too much.

I have to say though I'm not surprised it doesn't mention a PS3 version, it's obviously an anticipated sequel and MS wouldn't want it going to the PS3, at least not day and date. It may be a timed exclusive but who knows. I don't think the later release on another system of a timed exclusive title sells very well anyway so is it really worth porting it at a later date?

That said though, EA taking it to the PS3 would not have surprised me either because they're EA, they'd still publish for the Atari 2600 if they thought they'd make any money off it.

Why is everyone moaning and groaning about ME not being on the PS3? Both systems have their titles and if ME never makes it the PS3, so be it, PS3 has enough good RPG exclusives coming their way in Versus and a new Shin Megami Tensei exclusive.

If any PS3 fan really wants to play it, the PC version is dirt cheap or they can get it free online on just about any torrent site, just like pirated 360 games.

Overall sales according to vgchartz is 2.7 Million. Seems dumb to keep it exclusive unless Microsoft has a hand in it (which I doubt unless contract?).

But I know it's probably a pain in the a** for EA as whatever the problem is i'm sure they would want it as a multiplatform game. They need as many sales as possible especially on expensive games to develop like this one. This is especially poignant to the current financial predicament EA is facing.

They just need a AAA multiplatform game and the Playstation 3 (as much as the Xbox fanboys try to deny it) has to much of a marketshare to ignore especially when this title is'nt being lifted to the Wii.

In reality, the PS3 doesn't need ME more than the 360 needs ME to remain exclusive. After losing Deadrising, Bioshock and NG2, losing ME exclusivity would definitely send a ripple affect through the gaming industry that 3rd party multi-platform games should be the norm for most popular titles. With the cost of some 3rd party games, could you really blame a company for going multi-platform?
