The Halo Killer

The hype for Killzone 2 has been building for four years now. When the now infamous target render was shown at E3 in 2005 a backlash was created that still hurts Sony to this very day. Now with a month left until Killzone 2 is unleashed upon the masses GamingFront.net takes a look at how it has come to exceed every expectation that anyone could of had. Killzone 2 is the real deal. The real 'Halo Killer'.

So why is this game a Halo killer? There are three main reasons for it.

1. The single player is an epic sci-fi story.
2. The Multi-player is better than Halo.
3. Microsoft will suck the life out the Halo Franchise

I love how everyone has done a 180 with KZ2, remember how it was just months ago? Still sites like GamesRadar trying to downplay it. LoL. Thank god kz2 had a beta, now everyone knows when sites are just BSing and trying to nitpick. Its comin folks, im just excited because 2009 is going to deliver the one game that was shown for the PS3 that I thought personally was impossible to do, but christ. KZ2 is the truth. Cant wait.

ARGGGH!!! Why the heck does the gaming media hype up PS3 games so much? They should just let Killzone 2 run it's course and wait for the critics to say what they have to say in reviews before making such bold claims instead of possibly jinxing the game with the "Halo Killer" title.

The media did the same thing with Killzone 1 in terms of hype and they are doing the same thing with Killzone 2, the biggest difference this time around is that Killzone 2 lives up to that infamous E3 2005 target trailer both graphically and gameplay wise and and most of all KZ2 is TONS more polished than Killzone 1 ever was.

Killzone 2 looks totally amazing in terms of gameplay, graphics, and overrall production value, and I don't see Killzone 2 failing in any way, but I'm really sick and tired of all of this "Halo Killer" talk when it comes to KZ2. The gaming media needs to just let the game be a freakin' kicka$$ good game instead of a "Halo Killer".

People should be shot for saying "X game will kill X game." It just means you are a fanboy and not even a clever one at that.

Halo does some great things and I understand completely why plenty of people play it daily. For me though I put it down a month after its release for COD4.

My biggest gripes with Halo might be that there's no run feature and that the weapon balance really isn't there. It just doesn't end up being that fun or satisfying, but again someone else might feel it is just the right fit to their playstyle.

As for Killzone 2... I've been playing videogames since I was 5, which is just about almost 16 years of my life. In that 16 years I haven't been this excited to play any game, but Killzone 2 just makes me go crazy to wait to Feb 27th to finally play the full version.

The game will be great and I cannot wait.

Infinity Ward set a new standard in FPS with this game. I bought Resistance 2 and COD WAW at Xmas and still found myself drifting back to COD 4 MW. It's one game I wont ever trade in(again!).

Killzone will probabably will be good, just for the graphics alone. Just as gears was at the time of release. But one thing is for sure. I got the 360 just because it has halo. Im freakin addicted to the multiplayer. I have to wait and see if killzone have good multiplayer. Im waiting for a game since halo 2, to control my addiction to halo multiplayer.

Halo killer? Here we go again. KZ2 is going to be amazing or I hope it is anyway. I enjoyed the Beta but did not fall hopelessly in love with it like many of you. I play the Halo series but am not a big fan of it either. It is lacking on so many levels but the 4 player co-op is a blast to play and makes up for the other issues I don't like. Plus it has sold 10 million copies and KZ2 isn't going to come close to that...ever. As for an epic story, how about we wait and play the finished product before we bestow epic upon it. It is hyped like no other PS3 game ever and can't possibly like up to it. No game ever does.

Okay, guys. Killzone 2 is not going to kill Halo. The two can't even be compared, not because one is so much better than the other, it's because they're opposite in almost every way.

Halo has it's own style and feel. It's a matter of opinion. Halo still does things that no other game does. If you don't like Halo's online, then that's your issue, it doesn't mean that it sucks. To say that K2 will have better online is just ignorant, they're completely different. One is colorful, one is gritty. One is weighty, the other lets you jump 10 feet in the air. They're different, they have different audiences.

The only thing I can say with any kind of certainty is that K2 will kill Haze. You can't be sure of any more than that.

That said, I'm excited to play K2. If I enjoy the demo I'm going to buy it. I've got high hopes for the game, but I'm going to be realistic about them.

And just to be clear, I was not one of the people that hyped up Haze when it came out. I didn't think they existed. I was sure that everyone could see that it wasn't any good. Also, I own both a 360 and a PS3, but my bias definitely slides in Sony's favor. So please save the fanboy cries for someone else.

Also, I like COD4, it's a great game that I play frequently. But it's not perfect. Seriously, it's not the end all, be all of gaming.

One more thing the only people who should care about the sales are the companies who develop and publish the game. Its not like your getting a paycheck.

Anyway, a bit off topic (or on topic depending on perspective). I have a Sony Bravia KDL-46W4100. The tv has 120 Hz refresh rate. My question is simple. Is the 120 Hz always on or do I have to turn it on. The reason why I ask is because I was at Best Buy and saw a Samsung showing a video, wherein said video was split showing 120Hz on one side and 60 Hz on the other side. It had me thinking. Is it on by default or always on. If not, how do I turn it on? I'm reading the manual and nothing is mentioned about it, but I want to make sure. Anyway help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No, it wont. Compared to Halo 3's fun factor, Killzone 2 may barely pass. The only thing Killzone 2 wins in is graphics. The only thing that can be debated is things like story and music. You guys can be excited all you want for KZ2, but i choose fun and variety first and foremost over anything else.

ps: Halo also has rich, vibrant colors to assist its deadly enemies, environments, and vehicles. Killzone 2 has blacks, grays, and browns, just like almost every other shooter ever released, like Gears, Resistance, STALKER, FEAR, Doom, Quake, etc etc etc.

Killzone 2 will not kill Halo. Now, lets see how many disagrees i get from the SDF.

The 360 version of COD4 did not sell as many copies as Halo 3 did, did not receive better reviews, and as of the first week of January 09, according to IGN, COD4 ranks #4 of most played on XBL while Halo 3 ranks #2. COD WaW is #1, but Halo 3 is a year older. WaW also was not better received or sell as many copies as Halo 3 either. Halo has not been killed, and most importantly i dont think Halo 3 should have been killed.

Well don't care if it sells more than Halo or not but for Sony it would be nice if it did. but that won't have an effect on the games quality. This is going to be THE shooter online no matter what. Well, they were almost right. It will be killer, but I hate the term "Halo Killer." It is derogotory to the game being labelled as one because, quite simply, it doesn't take much to surpass Halo. Well maybe not in terms of sales, but gameplay is what matters to me (and most other gamers).

Killzone 2 seems like it is going to be an incredible game and i plan on playing that hell out of it. But I dont understand why a lot of people keep making the statement "Halo-Killer". I sure the multiplayer aspect will be amazing, but the unfortunate thing is that it is going to be played on PSN. There are about 5 Halo killers now (there may have been more but I don't know). How many times does it take to kill Halo? I mean Halo must have many lives cause it's already been killed by Haze, Resistance, Resistance 2, COD4, Killzone, Killzone 2, and the list probably keeps going yet Halo still lives (and will continue to live with Halo: ODST coming out). Instead of calling it a "Halo Killer" you should just see the game for what it is. I don't see why Halo and KZ2 are being compared. Different styles of gameplay, different focus, different consoles. Halo is fun to pick up and play, but I hardly consider it the end all be all of FPS. I certainly respect what it did for console FPS, and I LOVE the recording feature in Halo 3, but overall the series doesn't do it for me. I despise the muzzle drift when you shoot, especially in such an "arcadey" styled shooter. My personal all time faves are still GE007, Perfect Dark 64, UT2004, CoD4, and Q3TA.

Also, what I find interesting in this thread is, for a site purported to be run by "Ps3 fanboys," I see plenty of people acknowledging Halo as a solid title. I also see them calling out the absurdity of the GAMING MEDIA to label a title a "______ Killer." I guess there are more gamers here than the fanboys would like to think. It's perfectly okay for Halo and KZ2 to be successful and fun titles, as its entirely okay to enjoy more than one title per genre people. 2 was ok.
3 was poor by other FPS standards.

COD4 is the current console FPS champion (although i personally think Resistance 2's multi-player is better than COD4s), but i have to say, after being in the Killzone 2 beta, i think it beats COD4 on the multi-player front.

not only does it have leveling up, but you can mix classes primary and secondary badges, a great improvement over class based games like Team Fortress and Resistance 2.

if the campaign mode is as good as it looks like it is, then KZ2 could easily be the next big FPS that all other FPS titles are judged by.

COD4 came out when? 2 years ago? its about time a worthy challenger stepped into the ring.

i remember when Dark Cloud 1 was supposed to be the "Zelda Killer" according to the press, and what was actually a genuinely good first time RPG from the then unknown Level 5 got reamed by the media that THEMSELVES set it up to fail by calling it the next Zelda.

outside of outlandish statements by folks like Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai, and other Sony PR people, most of the games on the PS3 got hyped by the PRESS.

Lair? that was hyped to be the first mega-hit of the PS3 by the media, so Playstation 3 fans rallied behind it. afterall, the press gets to play these games early, and they all said great things about Lair. come review time? it's apparently the worst game ever made. i played Lair. i beat it. it was mediocre, but i enjoyed it. the graphics were amazing, the soundtrack was equally so, and the story was rather good, considering that it revolved around dragons and warring countries. it got torn to shreds by media and non-PS3 owning haters alike because they hyped it up so much.

Heavenly Sword was next to receive the "Savior of the PS3" moniker, and all the expectations that that entail. Heavenly Sword is a truly badass game. it doesn't redefine the genre, but it most certainly sets the bar for audio/visual presentation in a game in it's genre. well, it COULD have, if people gave it a shot, instead of listening to the media tear it down for "issues" that are present in EVERY OTHER action game, but somehow get overlooked. but oh no, a PS3 Action Game has to be flawless, with never before seen game design, and innovative in every way.

like Lair, instead of going the "XXX Killer" route, they had a much more effective method of slander: "This game is going to justify the Playstation 3's existence." that phrase alone caused more damage to the Playstation 3's reputation than ANY "XXX Killer" moniker ever could. go back and read the reviews of the first year of PS3 exclusives. from launch titles to Unreal Tournament 3. just about EVERY.SINGLE.ONE has the phrase "this title DOESN'T justify the cost of the PS3." or some such take on it.

it's a low, and pathetic tactic. ONE game NEVER justifies the cost of ANY console. a strong LIBRARY of titles is what keeps people interested, and coming back.

sure, quite a few people bought a 360 for Halo 3. but they also picked one up for

Crackdown (the Halo 3 beta bonus game that didn't get the love it deserved)
Dead Rising
Bioshock
Eternal Sonata
Fable 2

and so on. those games (and many more), justify the cost of the 360, and upcoming games like Ninja Blade, Alan Wake, Huxley, Star Ocean IV, etc continue to drive interest.

Playstation 3 fans didn't buy the PS3 for just ONE game either.

PS3 owners got new IPs to champion (Resistance, Uncharted; sadly, Folklore and Heavenly Sword were killed off; they could have been excellent), BUT we also still have legacy franchises like Gran Turismo, God of War, Twisted Metal, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Team Ico games, etc, to look forward to.

but everytime a new PS3 title is announced, it's like the haters are nervous when they can't find a new 360 title to match it, that they result to "well, it's not going to be a 'XXX killer'," and nod knowingly at one another with crossed arms and furrowed brows.

did God of War "kill" Devil May Cry? NO. but they are both action/adventure games, and they co-exist in the same genre peacefully. Ninja Gaiden is right next to them as well.

does Splinter Cell "kill" Metal Gear Solid? NO. but they both co-exist in the Stealth/Action genre together.

i like VARIETY. i like CHOICES. i like having more options available to me.

i liked that there are multiple titles per genre, so if i don't like what one is offering, i can try the other.

i love Resident Evil, but i'm certainly glad that there were franchises like Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Siren to give me choice.

i love God of War, but i'm glad Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry exist to keep the series on its toes.

Halo was a great series that i personally think has run it's course, or needs a little bit of a break, then relaunch (like Capcom did with Resident Evil. after Code Veronica, the series was practically dead to most fans, as it was the same old thing all over again. they revamped the franchise, released RE4, and the series is back on track. although they are dangerously close to starting the cycle all over again with RE5).

there ARE better FPS titles than Halo out there. COD4, Resistance 2, and Killzone 2 are just three that have already surpassed the franchise in it's gameplay offerings.

just because a particular game or series has been surpassed, however, doesn't mean that it is suddenly a sh*tty game.

Halo 3 is decent, but to me it has already been surpassed by other games. However, the more important point is that Killzone 2 doesn't need to "kill" Halo. Those that enjoy Halo will likely continue to enjoy Halo, while Killzone 2 will likely carve out its own place among the best that the FPS genre has to offer and will be enjoyed by many other people.

2. 'Multi-player better than Halo' Mainly because of the all new mulit-player mode 'WAR ZONE'! Not to be confused with the 3 year-old Gears of War multi-player mode 'War Zone' And although Infinity Ward and Valve will have Guerilla Games in litigation for years and years over completely ripping off their games' muti-player modes. no one will even notice.

3. 'Microsoft will suck the life out the Halo franchise' Strangely similiar to articles like this one sucking the life out of non PS3 owners anticipation for Killzone 2. Easily the worst knock on Halo in years. Microsoft has released 3 Halo games from 2001 -2008. And This will be the 3rd Killzone game since 2004. Not to mention Grand Theft Auto who has released 7 GTA series' titles since 2001. Or maybe even the Call of Duty series which has released 6 games in 5 years!

Top 5 ways we will know Killzone 2 will be a Halo killer

1. Gross over $300 million in it's first week ($170 Million on day one)

2. Over one million people playing your game over your system's internet service in the first 24 hours

3. Sell 8.1 million copies in less than 5 months

4. Average at least a 93% Metacritic after 89 reviews (wait till the guy who sold the press kit eats K2 alive)

5. Have Killzone try 2 times and spend 6 years trying to Kill your game.

Bottomline..we all may end up playing K2 one day..but it doesn't come close to the console grandaddy of FPS gaming.

K2's one player game does not come close to Halo 3 Four player on-line co-op campaign

K2's multi-player will not even come close to innovating like Halo 3 did with Forge, Theater, the best online matchmaking system in console gaming period.

Im a Xbox person myself got halo 1,2,3 liked the first one and got more disappointed with each sequel that followed. But i still love Halos multiplayer. To me the halo 2 and 3 hype killed the game for me, the media make it sound so good and say how you can do this, do that, the graphics are like something you have never seen before. but when you get the game, put it in play the game and finish it, and realize its just not the same game you were expecting that was promised to you.

If every single PS3 owner in the US bought Killzone 2 it still wouldn't have sold as many copies as Halo 3. 40% of PS3 owners worldwide would have to purchase Killzone 2 to even match Halo 3's numbers. Fanboys hang on to this term like its gosepel. Sony coined it for back with the first Killzone because they felt threatened by Halo's success. There was no need to make a "Halo Killer" just a need to make a game that moves consoles. This is all Sony needs Killzone 2 to do.
