Feature: Can PS3 Catch Up to Xbox 360?

Gamedaily: Is Sony's PS3 forever going to be stuck in third place, or can the console eventually catch the 360? We speak to leading analysts to see what Sony's strategy should be.

Remember how 2008 started? Sony and some pundits proclaimed that 2008 would be the "year of the PS3." With GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, the launch of PlayStation Home, addition of Trophies and a new video marketplace, one could argue that the PS3 should have fared better. And while total PS3 sales in the U.S. were up 40 percent in 2008, the fact of the matter is that 2008 was anything but "the year of the PS3." Indeed, it was the year of the Wii, and to a much lesser extent, the year of the Xbox 360.

Sony has been losing market share and it desperately needs to convert the majority of those 50 million PS2 owners into PS3 adopters. It won't be easy, and clearly the biggest obstacle at the moment is the PS3's price, but analysts believe Sony definitely still has a chance to catch or even exceed Microsoft in the console race.

GameDaily BIZ picked the brains of five leading game industry analysts to get their respective takes on how Sony can "rescue" the PS3 before the hole grows any deeper.

these journalists i swear smfh.

LISTEN! UP!: FOR THE LAST TIME!!!!

IF THE PS3 DROPPED IN LATE '05 AT $399 (same time as xbox 360 in other words), IT WOULD HAVE SURMOUNTED THE 360

tattoo that on ur damn arms if u have too cuz we're sick of explaining it

Key word is "if" but since it didn't release in late '05 you can't use that as an excuse.

LightningPS3PS35578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

Then it's possible. But, like everyone in the world with common sense knows, it needs a price adjustment, big time.

And it needs to be on the market a year after 360 is done, because they started a year later. If that balances out, then indeed the PS3 could catch up.

PirateThom5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

There's too many variables for timeframe speculation.

If the PS3 had launched at the same time as the 360, it wouldn't have Blu-ray and thus wouldn't cost as much, but Sony would lose their Trojan Horse for a new format and if that PS3 had failed, it wouldn't have pushed the new Sony format.

If the 360 had launched at the same time as the PS3, it might have had better build quality and HD DVD and the format war may not have gone in Sony's favour, and it might have been as costly as the PS3 was when it launched.

UnSelf5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

lol, oh thx man.

i really didnt kno it was GD. Just laugh and disregard ppl, keep it moving nothin to see on that site

@1.4: its much more than speculation and hypotheticals fueling my reasoning. Number clearly show that the ps3 did betta in its first 2 yrs den what the 360 did in its. The Trojan horse effect didnt help muc either Pirate and who's to say what about techinology? What i base it upon is that the ps3 is ONLY DOWN becuz of its own disadvantages and the 360's advantages (price cuts, cheaper initial price and headstart).

Think about it.......the ps3 isnt that much far behind the 360 GIVEN its disadvantages.........now imagine if it dropped with everything it dropped wit in 06, but in 05 at a 399 starting price?

im not merely speculating but drawing logical conclusions and evaluations from historical figures and number patterns.

If by Dec. 09 the pattern is the same as it is now (meaning with the 360 leading by 8 million), then i would neva open my mouth about the ps3 catching up to the 360

IQUITN4G5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

All very well Bubbles but it didn't

I totally agree with the arguement - Sony should have buried MS a long time ago but now has a real battle on it's hands

They did essentially p!ss away they're lead and it isn't guranteed they will get it back

Bad luck sure but some mistakes from Sony has meant they now have made room for MS

Bluray was in theory a smart move and still may be, but things are not always the same way twice and has resulted in Sony in a tougher place right now

Tomdc5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

I think it can easy from its current position, whether it does or not is an entirely different matter. It's 8 million sales behind, thats under what it sells in a year... Considering its pretty undeniable that the PS3 will have a longer lifespan than the 360 it could easily outsell merely because of the fact it lasts longer.

These articles are getting tiresome and boring yes guys, but if you dont wanna look don't bump up its temperature by complaining about it. Lets face it though, if n4g wasn't spammed with these it would just be something else. This website is, due to its very nature, tiresome and repetative if you use it often. There simply isn't enough news in games to keep someone occupied daily. If you check here weekly and ignore articles you don't approve of you will maximise your enjoyment.

And??? Dint the Ps2 have year advantage on the Xbox? you werent up there complaining at that time I bet.

That argument might hold water if the PS2 just beat the X-Box, instead it was demolished.

CrazzyMan5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

m?
Bubbles to anyone, who can explain me that. =)

1. PS3 is selling on pair with x360 in Europe +-1 mln., though x360 had 1,5 year advantage.
2. PS3 has over 2 mln. userbase advantage in Japan and most GOOD games on PS3 easy pass 300k mark. While on x360 only some jrpgs can pass 100k sales mark.
3. Now, NA, it`s 7 mln. vs 14 mln., that is some difference, BUT because of that difference, NOBODY is going to ignore 33% of NA market share.

Time has changed, we live in a MULTIPLATFORM ERA, there is VERY low chance, that developers will start support x360 exclusively, because of those 7 mln. advantage.
There is MORE chance, that some Japanese developers will still exclusively support PS3, but for wesern developers, unless they are paid, there is no chance.
Well, slim chance, that western developers will want to utilize blu-ray disc space and cell power and create something amazing, but this will cost a lot of money, so not in near future so far.

Time has changed. Sales doesn`t matter anymore THAT much, as they did in PS2 gen. Wii is number one, yet we get more HIGH quality 3rd party PS360 games, then Wii.

And last thing, let`s assume, that PS3 in next 2 year outsells x360 by a lot, and will be like 20 or 30 mln. ahead of x360. That is 35-40 mln. vs 60-70 mln. So what, what will change?
Does anybody actually believe, that western developers will abandon x360 now?
The only winner now, who can make a profit. Sales doesn`t matter anymore. By the end of this year, all 3 console will pass xbox/GC sales. Now it`s only about GAMES and profit. =)

Before anyone reads this, I'm copying and pasting most of everything because I have no time for this, but anyone want to read a reasonably unbiased discussion on this article, read this thread.

"Time has changed. Sales doesn`t matter anymore THAT much, as they did in PS2 gen. Wii is number one, yet we get more HIGH quality 3rd party PS360 games, then Wii."

I agree on you with the fact that PS360 gets more high quality 3rd party games than the Wii, but the Wii's third party line up is looking very good. The Wii's first party line up is the real show.

Sales really don't matter, it's more a E-Peen measuring contest.

Sales do matter to a certain extent, for Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo has it's pockets overflowing since the release of the Wii, quite a turnaround from the Gamecube.

The sales matter because Sony has been actually losing profit since the PS3 has been released though they are almost at breaking even, it also matters because the 360 was never suppose to even surpass the PS3 that much according to Sony's PR and fans back when the PS3 was almost released.

From here on I'm going to copy and paste something from NeoGAF forums that I believe will be the trend UNLESS a drastic change is made.

Q: "Can PS3 catch up to 360?"
A: In America, no. Worldwide, probably no.

Here's the reasoning behind my answer (which is a ridiculous guess far into the future):

Basis
1. 360 will likely not see a replacement until the end of 2011. PS3 will likely not see a replacement until a year later. Of course, they'll both continue to sell after that, but let's assume parity on their decay curves. This gives the PS3 an extra year at the end of the generation.
2. Microsoft currently has an ~7.5m unit lead worldwide: 1.5m in Europe (mostly in the UK), 7m in the U.S., -2m in Japan, 1m elsewhere.

Projection
A. Japan. PS3 exceeded 360 by about 600k units in 2008. It has far bigger games coming this year (like FF XIII exclusive), but on the other hand the 360 appears to be doing better week to week than before. I think we'll see about a 1m unit lead in 2009, then 1.2m in 2010 and 2011, and 1.6m in 2012. PS3 versus 360 from here out: +5m
B. Europe. The two HD consoles are neck and neck there, with a little extra momentum on Microsoft's side due to the recent price cut. Sony has more room for those in the future, though. I'd say next year Sony might be a little behind again, rising to parity in 2010 and beyond. PS3 versus 360 from here out: +2m.
C. U.S. PS3 was behind by 1.2m this year, all from the second half of the year. That means they move into 2009 with lower momentum. A price cut will help, but I still think they'll fall behind overall by about 750k. As 360 reaches a price floor and PS3 can drop comparatively further, I think they can almost close that gap in 2010, but not until 2011 will they outsell 360, and then only barely. The following year will give them their only big win, but it won't be enough. PS3 versus 360 from here out: dead even.

Total until generation end: PS3 +7m.

This is also from NeoGAF that I thought was kinda funny and in a sense somewhat true.

"In USA no, Worldwide probably no"

Well, I'm guessing you're American since it has to be "USA and the rest of the world". LMAO. Now that we cleared that you're probably a bigot (hell, you're probably not, but who cares? Your line of reasoning is as shoddy as this one anyway, so it's not like you can complain), we can move to the actual argument.

My answer is: In America? Unlikely. In Japan? It already did. In Europe? The gap has already closed on most countries and/or PS3 is already beating it in some. Only UK sees 360 beat PS3 by a significant margin. PS3 had actually surpassed 360 in Europe a long time ago but, with 360 dual price drop in Europe, the 360 caught up and regained a minor lead of 1 million consoles (give or take). However, considering all it took Microsoft to regain such a minor lead, it's very likely that the PS3 will beat 360 all over Europe except the UK (I guess that by your logic it's "UK europe and non-UK europe" right?).

In "the rest of the world" (i.e., Latin America, India, China, the middle east, Korea, Africa, etcetera) , it's a mixed bag. Some people will just not put up with shoddy hardware, others won't put up with delays and expensive prices. It probably depends on the economic situation of each country.

Now, why is regional stratification important? Because each region buys games differently (some genres are more important than others) and because of currency; basically, each region has a different strategic position (not like Bitter guy understands any of this but I hope others do).

Even though as of now there is a minor lead in Europe in terms of 360 against PS3, PS3 games consistently outsell 360 games. It's likely that the 360 is used as a second console. Take Italian and Spanish charts for example. PS3 just keeps pwning 360 despite 360 launching earlier.

Considering the dollar is very weak compared to the Euro, and that prices were already much higher in Europe than in America, you shouldn't be surprised to see the big development houses have a higher revenue from PS3 games than from 360 games. PS3 games cost to develop just a little more than 360 games and that's just a maybe, since that was back in 2006 when PS3 dev kits were rare and PS3 was unknown.

Now that PS3 is well known by devs, it's likely that development houses make as much profit from PS3 games if not more, regardless of attach rates, NPD and whatever 360 fanboys seem to be clinging from as of late. In the end it's the bottomline that counts, and with the current state of the economy, it's likely that a game sale in Europe will matter more than a game sale in America. Therefore, if PS3 beats 360 in Europe, it's likely to get many games that were formerly exclusive to 360 (See: Gears of War (owned by Epic), Mass Effect (owned by EA), Ninja Gaiden 2 (Owned by Tecmo), Fallout, GTAIV and Tomb Raider DLC (each owned by their respective non-Microsoft Studios dev houses)). Just remember that most of the big development houses revealed that they were making more revenue off PS3 than 360, just a fact that you have to consider before you come to "bicker" ;).

It's always funny how guys with nicknames such as: "Bitter tears", "Voiceofreason", "truegamer" and seemingly "neutral" avatars that supposedly come to make fun of all fanboys equally end up being fanboys themselves. Their nicknames are usually pretty ironic, isn't it Bitter guy? lmao

The Lazy One5578d ago

that was one of the better thought out posts I've ever seen on N4G.

The PS3 has to outsell the 360 by 2.5 million units per year to overcome the 360 in the next 3 years.

For the past 2, it has been selling on par, and just recently trended worse globally. I find it very hard to believe that M$ would 1. not announce or release a console in the next 3 years and 2. not respond in any way to any action taken by sony to increase sales.

40cal5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

Almost every analyst thinks that the PS3 will over take the 360 in sales this gen. They all seem to think it is just a matter of either when/and or price cut.

On a side note, I love how some people still think that Blu-Ray is just for HD movies. If it was not for Blu-Ray some really awesome games would have not been able to be made, Metal Gear Solid 4 anyone?

RussDeBuss5578d ago

i aggree, ps3 is rumoured to be into profit now, so as long as it keeps selling, even if it doen't passs 360 sales by the end of this gen it will still have made sony money, and from a business point of view it will be a success.

i don't know if 360 is in profit yet because of big price drop and rrod issues, but i am aslo sure it will be in profit by the end of its lifetime, again a success, doing more than xbox1 which i read never made profit.

Helghast5578d ago

Oh no this sucks for Sony! If Pachter said it, it's NOT going to happen! The dude is consistently wrong.

I.E. On the Bonus Round he said "PSN is like a park; it's where all the losers and low-lifes hang around." *5 minutes later he says* "Have you guys played on PSN? I NEVER have!"

So if Pachter hasn't played PSN how does he know that it's where the low-lifes are? He bluntly admitted that he has never actually been online with PS3 and basically said "You know, I'm just pulling all this out of my a**." If he did ever go on PSN he'd see it's where the mature gamers are. The ones who do NOT scream into the mic, insult your mom and call you a noob even though you just owned them.

Pachter seems like a nice guy, but when it comes to predictions and assumptions, he really out of his element.

What really matters is when. =P We know it will catch up.

-PS3 life cycle is about 10 years
-360 life cycle is 5-7 years at best

Now do the math and ask again....damn MS payed journalists!

Kushan5578d ago

Why do people keep thinking the 360 wont last as long as the PS3? Because it's under-powered? Yeah, I don't think we've had a single generation where the most powerful console both "won" and lasted the longest.

Take last generation - Gamecube AND Xbox were more powerful than the PS2, yet the PS2 is still selling extremely well today.

Previous generation - N64 was more powerful than the PS1, yet the PS1 both outlived it and sold more (Admittedly it had a couple of years head start, but in this instance, so does the 360).

And most importantly, people don't get that it doesn't matter if one console has sold 8million more than the other, or they're both neck and neck - at the end of the day, they'll be around for as long as they're good for making money on. The 360 is raking in plenty of cash and the PS3 isn't doing too badly either, so expect both to be around for a couple of years yet. And you should be happy! If there was no competition, neither Sony or Microsoft would give a crap about you, they'd happily push out a new console every 3 years, charging enough that they make a profit on and keeping the prices of all games and accessories high, that's what happens without competition.

So, will the PS3 catch up to the 360? Who knows? More importantly, why does anyone care? By the time it does catch up, we'll all be waiting for the next generation anyway. Call it a draw and marvel at the good things that's come from it, for your sake and everyone else's.

pippoppow5578d ago

It should catch up. It's exclusive catalog of games will grow as the years go on which will outdistance the competitions. The PS3 should just keep doing what it's doing, except advertise more. If it's must have high quality games that sell gaming consoles then Sony will be more than fine.

Kinetix5578d ago

Another one of these? Where's the good stuff?

PirateThom5578d ago

You know, last year, I would have said 2009.

I wasn't someone who was like "PS3 WILL DESTROY THE 360 IN SALES FOR 2008", I was being realistic, but Sony seem more concerned now with making a profit than coming first and are trying to sell the console through games, which is fair enough. I'm sure if Sony wanted to come first (and that was all they cared about), they'd drop the PS3 to $99 and be done with it.

I don't hold shares in Sony, but if they continue to pump out the games, I have no reason to worry about their sales or their desire to make profit. When they put their number of consoles sold above the games they're releasing, then I'll be concerned.

2008 was a good year for the PS3, 2009 will be a good year for the PS3 and anyone who uses "install base" as a reason to discount this games, isn't a gamer.

games4fun5578d ago

are making me feel really old. I get tired of telling people the common sense answer. Blu-ray for instance i didn't really care about which held how much it just mattered that there was Disney and Many others supporting blu-ray it was an obvious choice.

Will sony catch up? yes and here is why, sony will win every territory in the long run except the USA they will end up even in the USA. So sony will win this will take at least 2 to 4 years though.

Sony will pass msoft in numbers only for msoft to launch thier next console and claim victory over last gen even though it isnt over.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt15h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken12h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
