Pretty much all this game ever had going for it was it's technical superiority on the orignal Xbox. Boths part 1 and 2 set the bar for their respective time.

Looks like this one is gonna miss the mark.

i agree i was expecting more, but it does still look good but it doesnt look like an AAA title, but keep in mind its an alpha build...the downfall of this game or any games is the hype, people are expecting too much thats the problem.

I think the screens look pretty amazing. I don't play Halo cause it's the best looking game of all time, but rather cause the gameplay is the best around. On face, it's easy to look at the graphics as a gauge to how a game will succeed, but the graphics aren't everything in making a AAA title.

They don't look good to me for a few reasons though. I've seen Unreal III, Blacksite, and other FPS's in action... It's from a tv...which makes them all blurry. The only promising one is the last one because it's shiny.

What I can see happening is something like...in that last screenshot...when that guy turns around to look at you it looks extremely human-like. I don't know why, but that would be effing cool. I think Bungie will pull off a good game, but not freaking AMAZING!!!

Looks like combat evolved to me, yeh i know its only alpha whatever but i woulda expected more stuff on screen.
Im severely underhyped for this game. I was a big fan, played the first halo for yrs with mates and read the books then halo 2 came and rewined it all. I just wonna know how it ends. Maybe a rental for the story, but Gears is the only shooter ill ever need for a loooong time to come.

But if there is a guy out there like you that says that these screens look like Combat Evolved then you and them need to get their eyes checked. If you are a Halo 2 mp player, go back and play halo 1's mp and you can see that the difference is astounding. Halo 2 looks at least 3 to 4 times better than 1. So saying that Halo 3 screens look just as good as Combat evolved is just ignorant.

you guys have seen the alpha builds of the original halo right?? they were markedly worse than the final build... as with any game.

if you then read the egm article, the interview talked about a lot of effects (weather and hdr) that were left out the alpha build. so wait for the beta before passing judgement.

plus, they didn't change the art style at all, so people will think they are looking at the same thing... just like if you compare gt4 to gthd....

To start with I am a PS3 fanboy, but I think xbox is ok to! despite theirs(MS) sometimes nasty marketing of the 360(and other products). After looking at this alpha pictures I wasnt surprised the grafics wasnt better, but I am convinced that the final halo3 will look better than Gears! After they added all the filters, better textures and all other effects the game will be amazing! No game looks amazing at alpha stage! I remember long back reading about how Motorstorm didnt look amazing att all when it was shown behind closed doors when the game was in a early stage and look at it now! Freeking awesome! Fanboy? I'm a fanboy? Fanboys stay with a system because they're in love with the company. I stay with PS3 because it will have a better line-up than the 360 or wii. Fanboys never change systems. It took me 4 years to change from the genesis to the Super Nintendo. I also wasn't sold on the Playstation...because of the N64. However, when I played it...it changed gaming for me. I go with the system that brings fun to me. That's why I own a PC, a PS3, and i'll get a wii once it has better games. I own a PS3 this early because of blu-ray movies and I want some of the really cool downloadable games and stuff. I recognize there's only one good game out right now, but the PS3 will have better games this year than the 360 or Wii.

It looks like an upgrade to Halo 1. Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forward to this game. I'm an extreme 360 Fanboy, but it seems these pics, the map designs, the weapon designs, it looks like Halo 1. The sniper looks a lot like the Halo 1 one, rather than the 2 one. They've gone back to the Assault Rifle. Hopefully all this is just the Alpha Build, and it'll look fabulicious. ;)

But if Killzone 2 is how it was in the E3 2005 trailer, then this game won't be holding any candles to it in the graphics department, these screens aren't to great, sure there bad quality and they will polish this game up, but the question is how much eh? About as much as they polished Motorstorm up i say!

Since they are angled diagonally, I can imagine quite a few instances where you'll try and snipe an enemy and end up hitting the weapon on their back instead (when they're turned away from you). This is an even more crucial question for SWAT games. Hopefully Bungie chooses gameplay over realism for that little thing. Making secondary weapons visible was a great decision though; it'll add even more strategy and prevent people from hiding their snipes/swords.

I'm not going to comment on graphics until I see at least a near-final build. I know Bungie's not working on superior hardware anymore, but I'm sure it'll still look pretty good.

I am not the one with my choice of gaming console in my avatar. I am still getting a PlayStation 3, when there are more games I like, and the price drops. This game is going to own 2007! Wow I cant wait. The King is back and nothing is going to get in its way. Halo is just perfect in every way. The multiplayer maps are perfectly balanced in a creative science fiction theme. Lockout, Midships, Zanzibar, etc... Multiplayer maps just don't get any better than that folks. The gameplay is far and beyond better than all first person shooters out there. Nothing better than sticking somebody from across the map. I wonder when they're going to release some info about the secret "x" button. I'm guessing it's some sort of sprint or dash.

And I cant believe some sony boys here talk about the graphics being crappy when it's obvious that is just an alpha build. Yet they talk about the motorstorm demo being an early build all the time! Funny stuff.

This is alpha so, basically it's ... not even close to be done. Buffed Halo 2 kind of... My MAJOR complaint is, why doesn't the sniper rifle have a fcuking LCD screen? Lame-o greeny 1970s' computer look!! Anyway, this game is uber super overhyped FPS of all time, FEARs' story and gameplay knocks Halo. I only say this cause Halo 2 was poopie to me; SP, MP, Weapons, Enemies bosses!! C'mon!! :(

In the end I'm sure Beta will blow me away, and the game will be awesome. Would this count as 2nd generation game, or 3rd?

as for killzone,that game had flaws,but it was a fun game.it had story,art,guns,online.it was still a good game.this may be microsoft's way of trying to get sony to show some cards.you just don't get a hold of pre alpha screens unless you stole them and are a VERY GOOD HACKER.so much talk was being given about killzone possibly showing up at GDC.this may be the counter.to get us to talk about halo3 again.

Anyone who buys a game based on graphics is dumb. It always comes down to the gamplay. I would buy halo 3 for 360 even if it had the exact same graphics because it would continue the great campain and deliver the flawless multiplayer which i have loved for the past couple of years. Nothing spectacular, that's for sure, but they're obviously well done and clean looking. I'm sure Halo 3 will rock the house like the previous 2 iterations. One of the things I like about Halo is how the mechanics are so simple, but the gameplay is so deep and varied, it's a different experience every time, and hopefully 3 continues this tradition of sorts.

BTW feralphoenix, Sony NEVER said Killzone was a Halo-killer, and they never said it about KZ 2. FYI, Killzone was originally intended to be a PC shooter YEARS before Sony even batted an eye in Guerilla's direction, so Halo never was of any consequence in the development of Killzone. Once Guerilla showed Sony their demo for WINDOWS, Sony worked it out to have it published for PS2 instead, and with that, we have the Killzone we all know and love(to hate).

The main problem with these screens is that they are taken with a piece of crap camera. It almost looks like a razor or some other phone type of device, which would be easier to sneak pictures at. This significantly reduces the quality, and will make any game look like crap. Regaurdless, even with the lacking camera, and the fact its a beta version the screenshots are pretty impressive. I mean look at the environment of the screenshot with the assault rifle. The background behind the tunnel look stunning, and nearly real.

Some times as I play I find myself thinking that the developers have to be 100% gamers. They do such a good job at making it right. From the way grenades and explosive weapons have a detectable splash effect to the point you can find the angle to frag a guy from any position on the map it is crazy.

Also how you can feel your joystick bounce from pulling the trigger. Is just too cool. I can not wait to play the Bata this MAY.

sony has hits in different genres on ps2.they see that microsoft has a hit that is climbing the charts.if you get the system,most likely your getting halo.that was usually the case as i worked behind the counter at one time as sales lead for one company and as manager for another with a halo 2 launch.i had 100 plus people outside my door at 12 midnight.while my guys rang up the sales,i stood out in the cold with them to make sure they were okay(we didn't have room)so i know what halo is to some gamers.it's their devil may cry.and more came for the rest of the week.

OK, Genki hey thats cool....you're right you never said I was lying, but as far as it being a "misconception" that Sony was behind the "Halo Killer" idea, I have to disagree because it was widely reported at the time and yet I haven't read anything from any official Sony rep's disputing, the claim. -"If" they have indeed denied it, I just haven't read it.....so is this definitive "proof" that Sony has made the claim before, -NO and I could provide similiar links but the point is that anything short of having a "caught on tape" video of someone from Sony actually having the words come out of his mouth wouldn't "prove" it either. When i first saw halo on xbox 1 i was shock the graphics was amazing -and all so a cople of racers amaze me on the xbox including pgr. I found the original Halo an awesome game to play and by all accounts, so did millions of others.Strange thing though,when i think of the fun i had playing the whole campaign 5-6 times, it isn't the graphics i remember.Now,Halo 2 had superior graphics, but i completed that only once and that was because i had purchased the game.Great games are special for many reasons,graphics being just a small slice of the pie.The graphics shown on this post are alpha, so you can't really make too much of that, but judging by Halo 2's gameplay, there are greater concerns for me.Sequels rarely, if ever surpass the originals,of course there are exceptions.Lets hope Bungie can re-capture that special Halo magic,if they can, i'll trade my textures.

They Look Decent. But this game has some big shoes to fill with gears. All you Halo and Xbox fanatics are aware if this game doesnt top Gears it will be looked at as somewhat of a let down. I cant wait to watch my lil bro play this. He's the Xbox fan in the family. So far I watched him run through Gears and Lost Planet in about 5 hours each. Hope this has Better visuals than Gears and more content that R:FOM that would make this a big hitter.

I would wonder the same thing if I was naive enough to think an Alpha build represents the final product. All that good sh*t like textures and finish effect comes last. They're concentrating on core gameplay and design features in early, then add all the visual flair and extra niceties later. I’m not worried, they pushed the Xbox and I’m sure the game is going to look phenomenal when its done. I mean MS and Bungie are pouring loads of time, effort, and $$ into this project. This is the Xbox's biggest franchise. With Microsoft financing this project and talented developers like Bungie pouring their best efforts into this game, expect nothing less than "Game Of The Year" just like it's predecessors!

if you look at the screens there is absoulutly no bumpy textures and it looks like halo 2 so much because they use the same grass effects and just place holder water ect. while they design the real stuff. they use place holder stuff so they can test the gameplay elment before finishing the graphics. http://www.bungie.net/News/...

I'm not worried at all,Bungie have said that the single player is now complete,from start to finish! So there main concern now is with multiplayer,they wanna get it right this time,and they got like 8 months to polish the game up and make it look amazing,even better than GOW..So dnt worry,they will give us a kick @ss game for sure later this year :) p.s just remember the e3 2006 demo of halo 3..it should look sumerts like that on the final product if not better!!

I agree that ut looks like a high res Halo 2 screenshot but its in alpha stage which many people don't seem to get. Remember the E3 2006 Halo trailer everything in that trailer was in game or "Realtime" they a were using the ingame engine. The reason they are showing all this alpha stuff is that they want to keep their fans informed. I also reckon its an excellent marketing plot, just wait until the final version is shipped, read the reviews and then play the game yourself.

Bungie announces Halo 3, the third and final game in the Halo Trilogy. Halo 3 will be released for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2007.

The game was revealed to the world at the Microsoft press conference at Grauman's Chinese Theater, in Hollywood, CA. By the time you read this, the announcement trailer should be available for download on bungie.net and directly to your Xbox 360, in full HD glory from Xbox Live Marketplace. Read no further if you want to avoid spoilers.

Nobody saw it coming. Halo 3! Who knew? For the last year or two, people have speculated about what our next project was and surprisingly, in all that time, not a single person guessed that it would be Halo 3. Not one.

We declare it the best kept secret ever.

Seriously though, it's been a chore biting our tongues on this one. Call it a combination of studio secrecy, corporate secrecy, Bill Gates already announcing it four times and, you know, whatever.

We won't ruin the content of our short presentation by describing it frame by frame, but we will note that everything you're seeing here is being rendered in real-time on the Xbox 360, using the current version of our Halo 3 game engine. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects should make it intact (and more) to our final game.

We demonstrated the real-time nature of the demo after the press conference (thanks to our friends at Pioneer with awesome audio-video assistance) to a small group of reporters, so we'll wait and see what their judgment on the presentation was, but you should feel free to make your own.

The trailer was built to have minimum impact on the development process, and while it required long hours and hard work from many, many Bungie staffers, it utilizes real-game assets, fiction and locations from parts of the "real" game.

In fact, it's the stuff it doesn't contain that gives it a strange kind of context. You can see how detailed the Chief is, but that detail applies to our other, unseen, unrevealed characters, vehicles, environment and so on. There's no AI visible in the demo, no multiplayer, and the entire thing has been left deliberately subdued both to give scale to the artifact and because this is our announcement. The real stuff will come later.

Fans of Halo fiction will be able to guess at a vast array of possibilities, even from this short piece, and discuss them in our newly launched Halo 3 Forum. For those new to the series, we'll make every effort to bring you up to speed on the story in forthcoming Bungie.net updates. We'll also be resurrecting the true purpose of the Update-proper - a weekly diary on the progress of the game that has been stymied recently, by the absence of (reveal-able) information.

Of course the trailer itself is a teaser - with no multiplayer, a single Earth-based locale, none of our sweet new AI or gameplay technologies. No physics to speak of, no new features other than a sneak peek at the graphics and audio engines…but the other stuff is there, and we'll reveal more as time goes on.

Cortana and the Chief being a galaxy apart is a situation we haven't seen before"

CJ Cowan, Bungie's director of cinematics discussed one of the most startling moments in the piece, the return of Cortana, "Given the variety of character and story arcs at the end of Halo 2, we wanted to boil down our announcement to a few key threads. Cortana and the Chief being a galaxy apart is a situation we haven't seen before, and is something that is a powerful component to Halo 3. We are using her transmissions in the demo to give the viewer a few subtle clues to her situation and state of mind, without revealing any specifics we want to save for the game itself."

The Cortana reveal is the first evidence that this trailer might be for Halo 3, but the game's main protagonist is the item that seals that deal. CJ explains, "It is the Chief, back on a devastated and Covenant controlled Earth, standing over the excavation of a structure buried in the crust of our own planet that is the meat of our demo."

"The questions raised by these images, and the feeling that our assumptions about the Halo universe are being challenged this late in the story is what I am personally most excited about leaving with our fans. That's the type of thing that builds anticipation even more for the payoff to this trilogy we are preparing."

CJ's long nights are far from over. Cinematics are going to be as vital a part of Halo 3 as they were in Halo 2 and Halo: Combat Evolved. As before, they will use the game engine to keep the player feeling like a part of the action.

Graphically, the game follows closely in the tradition of Halo 2, although obviously upgraded to take advantage of the Xbox 360's more prodigious visual abilities. As art director Marcus Lehto explains, "It was intended to be an understated announce of Halo 3 - the tone is that of mystery and suspense – the calm before the storm. I wanted to make sure that we re-introduced the Chief, show that Earth is thoroughly conquered, with Covenant everywhere, and that there is a glorious, ancient artifact buried under the Earth’s crust which will provide H3 with the epic journey which we all want."

Asked about the battered state of the Chief's armor, Marcus ventured, "The Chief is shown as warrior who has seen horrific battle – and it shows. The Earth is dry, barren, ravaged by the Covenant."

Grim stuff, but then things were grim at the end of Halo 2 when we left the Chief and the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance. A cliffhanger about which we received over twenty emails... cough.

Marty O'Donnell's music will no doubt be heard over and over again. We can relate. The Studio has been thundering with the brass and bass of the trailer music for weeks.

Marty hired a 60 piece orchestra and a 24 piece choir to record the trailer music. "I want the viewer to have a feeling of anticipation and wonder for the first fifty seconds or so, up until Master Chief is revealed and they realize that it’s Cortana trying to tell them something," he says.

Marty's music was designed from the ground up to lull the listener into a sense of doubt, then wonder. "I want them to feel pride and longing the moment Master Chief walks out of the smoke," says Marty. "I want them to get excited and perhaps even froth at the mouth when they see the Covenant Capital ship and then the incredible buried artifact. I want them to be left with that, 'I can hardly wait to play this game' feeling by the end with a slight, 'I wonder what she meant by that' aftertaste."

"I want there to be no doubt in anyone’s mind when it is the right moment to applaud and scream. I hope they do, anyway."

As to the unmistakable new trumpety note, Marty is perfectly blunt. "The first time the world sees this trailer is at a live Microsoft press event in the Chinese Theater in LA. It is the first time we announce officially that Bungie is making Halo 3. My thought is that since it is an announcement event that is full of pomp and gravity, music will contain a fanfare and be somewhat over the top. I want there to be no doubt in anyone’s mind when it is the right moment to applaud and scream. I hope they do, anyway."

so without proof ,my theory is just as valid.they bought a game in development to release on ps2 to get you to question buying xbox for halo.not to "KILL HALO".the media,doesn't matter if it's regular news or game news.THEY BLOW THINGS OUT OF PROPORTION.that's what they do.if you can't see that,then i just don't know.EXAMPLE:IGN cover with ps3 with tomato on it.the release was november,but i believe march issue has it on the cover.3 MONTHS LATER.oj simpson,anna nichole.i could go on and on.

looking at this site and others,you can clearly see things being blown out of proportion.with japan supposedly dropping prices of ps3 when it was one store.people reading between the lines and saying metal gear is coming to 360.devil may cry4 is coming to 360.why would these companies not want to make money on such a large fanbase is usually what they say.people posting articles,or should i say fanboys,to suite their own needs.instead of just posting news.the captions themselves speak volumes before any news article.rumors being pushed out as fact.when it's unsubstantiated.

so without the "SONY PROOF",it's heresy,with possibly a hint of fact.i'm not saying your lying,so don't put words there that i didn't say.i'm saying your proof is flimsy because it is a small website reporting what was obviously spread throughout the gaming media as fact.but they post no proof either.
