As a solo campaign, Resistance 2 just doesn't have a compelling main character. Insomniac didn't make it easy or exciting for gamers to relate to and identify with Nathan Hale.

On the other hand, Resistance 2 is unmatched as a multi-player game in almost every single way.

Let's get off the subject for a moment of r2 vs. geow2. You wanna know what game creams both of these titles (after I had the chance to play both)? MGS4. Better shooting mechanics than either, much much much better story than either, better cinematics, sound, music score, steath, bosses, enemy variety, etc.

Kojima totally reamed the competition this year in the FPS/TPS genre. Epic has no shot, Insomniac has no shot. And that's with my heavy bias toward both of these companies over Konami (whom I thought was good but not that good...)

In my opionion (no bias whatsoever as I proudly own both systems), believe that RFOM2 is both better in the single and multiplayer. Why?

- RFOM2's battles in single player were epic. There are sometimes up to 15 enemies that you face that actually keep their AI intact. GOW2, I only counted 4 or 5 enemies at once that kept their AI intact. When sequences appeared that presented more enemies they were just foliage. They just walked and fired or stood their and fired.

- GOW2 framerate drops during some of the more busy experiences dropped horrifically. I remember the battle on the large platform truck things that actually was not playable at a few points as I couldnt see what was going on. The slow down was sad.

As for the rest of the video. I agree. The online is much better on the PS3.

Keep in mind. I loved both games. I am a big GOW fan and loved both the first and the second. I just think RFOM2 is an overall better shooter.

I'm playing through Gears 2 right now and there have been a few times when the slowdown is so bad it takes you right out of the game. Some of the textures pop-in is pretty obvious as well. Hasn't stopped me from loving Gears 2, but it does explain why we haven't seen much push the 360 farther than the first Gears did...it can't be pushed much farther, obviously.

Haven't played R2 yet. That's next.

Gears of wars 2 is no doubt a fun game to play but in just about any front and topic, R2 makes it look like a 64 bit game on a cartridge. R2 is simply that rich in content.

I'm a huge Playstation 3 fan with an extreme bias for Gears of War. So I'm leaning towards Gears on this one. Keep in mind I haven't played either of them, but I'll be playing through Gears as early as this weekend. Although the numbers in multi-player were pretty limited in the first, it had a great strategic element to it. I watched some live MLG matches that were just sick. They had Halo 3 and R6 Vegas playing near it and those games looked pathetic next to Gears. I'll always remember a game awhile back where I was the sole survivor on my team, playing against a highly talented bunch, and I eliminated all of them single-handedly with my chainsaw, awesome.

There's just something to the character models in Resistance that doesn't sit well with me. Granted, what they achieved in their multi-player is pretty damn impressive. Gears just seems a little more polished, although at times it plays rather slow. That's from the perspective of a huge Quake/Unreal player though.

With all that said I doubt the story is any good for Gears. Epic fail badly at stories. I'm still shaking my head at UT3.

but people are nuts on this forum. I own both systems. I'm a sony fan. I played both and loved both. Since I bought resistance first...I'm still playing gears because I beat the game quick!

I'd have to give the story edge to gears 2, because I felt like the war against the chimera is just hopeless, and only got worse. I wanted to learn more about Nathan Hale and it seems like we just pushed farther down the rabbit hole. ( i don't want to wait 2 more years for a sequel, either). But for Gears 2, a story upgrade isn't saying much as the first game's story was worthless. Gears 2 had a campaign that was MUCH improved over the first game.

But Gears is squad based....and poor nathan is virtually alone as the other sentinels are pretty worthless.

I love horde mode, but I think the ability to switch your weapon loadout in Resistance Gives it the edge for multiplayer. No running around trying to be the first person to grab the torque bow.

But that's just me.

Anyway, its Thanksgiving...so go play.

All I know, is that IGN has just lost all of their crediability. The Resistance series is the definition of generic shooter. The forums were full of people complaining the Orange Box on the PS3 was unplayable and it still received a better metacritic score than L4D. By the way, Orange Box on the PS3 was fantastic. I finished all 3 episodes a couple of weeks ago before trading it in against Gears 2.

I have no idea what happened in 2006. But the reason that this site is the way it is, is because of broken commentary system which does nothing but to magnify the imbecilic opinions and drown out opposition. A bubble system would work, if the arbiters of the system were reasonable, but they're not, it's open to every idiot available.

What this does, is to magnify any imbalance in the community to extremes. The tiny discrepancy allows the larger group to pat each other on the back, in an inbred self congratulatory wank, regardless of whether their opinions and analysis are in any way informed.

I'm not going to go in depth into why your analysis of the 360's 2008 performance is wholly flawed, just taking a look at Arcade would refute that. Frankly, I don't care about that.

Agreed. Narrative, dialogue, characterisation, body language, events, drama, tongue-in-cheek humour, ripping the first game, constant escalation of the fun from good to superb and, to me, some of the most amazingly envisaged scenes in games so far.

I think its safe to say that this review could be biased, while I dont know if theyre getting paid off for this article, I do think a person that is impartial wouldn't proudly announce one side to be the winner.

It sounded to me like he admitted that. GeOW2 does the story mode better than R2, but he also claims that GeOW2 isn't the best shooter story mode out this year. I believe this is where he's placing the emphasis. Resistance 2 has one of the best multiplayer modes out there, for any shooting game.

So he's saying if you want to only play one, buy the one that pushes industry boundaries with what it did better, not the one that comes out on top in a direct comparison but falls short compared to other games recently.

havent leveled up the 3 different classes in co op mode or 60 player mode.

after a while going to beat it in superhuman mode.

my point was there are (aside from replaying the campaign mode and playing deathmatch) R2 has a separate co op mode that can be played in 3 different styles (medic, soldier, special ops)

gears 2 co op mode is just the same story line but with help. i'm not knocking gears, when i had a 360 gears was one of my favorite games. i prefer the co op story mode, never really liked the multiplayer for gears.

About the single player campaign in Resistance 2 his complaint is that it's very linear with scripted events...? What first person shooter isn't let alone shooters in general? It's like saying real time strategy games are slow paced, it makes no sense. Grand Theft Auto is an "action-adventure" game so exploration is something part of that genre. Shooters are pure "action" so linear scripted events are typical of a shooter.

Far Cry 2 are those rare pure "action" shooter titles with non-linear dynamic scripted events. You aren't going to see a lot of those types of shooters so thinking realistically is distant in this video.

Confusing I know. But one of the titles that's managed to blur the lines and pulled it off is Valkyria Chronicles.

I consider Valkyria Chronicles a role playing game because you take on specific roles to do your duty. To be more specific I call it a tactical role playing game because it uses elements of strategy as secondary elements complimenting the role playing game mechanics.

Like for example there are tactical first person shooters where it's still pure action with a little strategy. I consider Fallout 3 a role playing game because the main game mechanics are of an RPG with heavy action. So this will make it an action-role playing game since this game implements quick-time mechanics to a role playing mechanic. This game is different from Valkyria Chronicles because Valkyria Chronicles isn't about quick reflexes to overcome your objective while Fallout 3 requires that.

What separate RPG like Fallout 3 from being a pure action game is that you take on specific roles that give you advantages/disadvantages. For example in persistent online games you can take on a role of an elf in pure action games your role doesn't really effect what you can or can't do since it's very light. So being a wizzard in a first person shooter will be different than a wizzard in a persistent online game.

Don't get me wrong there will most likely be a game that blurs the lines. Some people say "Linger in Shadows" isn't a game but in reality it's an adventure game at its purest form. Adventure games aren't heavy with the quick reflexes to overcome objectives and usually have on objective to overcome throughout the game. These games are different compared to Splinter Cell where quick/timing actions are key to winning making it an action-adventure game. What makes action-adventure different from action is that you usually explore/back-track often and action games you rarely do.

I've seen G2 and thought it looked pretty good. But it does look the same as the first one. Although that looked pretty good.

I also think some of you are confusing textures, with bump mapping, Look closely at GOW textures, and most are nothing special. But it doesn't make it a bad game does it.

R2 has some very good texture work, and some good fx. Is it the best looking game ever, no. If it's fun and you enjoy it good.

I bought R:FOM with my PS3, when it launched.. and i f'ckn hated it!, the story was such a cliche, the multiplayer lacked anything exiting, and the weapons where uncreative imho. After i bought Halo 3 i sold it right away.
but back to the point..

Is R:FOM2 really that much better than RFOM? :O is the story actually dramatic and exiting this time around? has the anoying WW2 weapons been replaced? and is the online more than just a run&gun like in RFOM?

Why, it's 13 of those super positive reviews. What a surprise. If you throw in a few known Microsoft shills, like Gametrailers, Gamespot, Eurogamer and Variety that number goes to 17.

The number of reviewers that have Sony, or Playstation in the title? 2. The number of professional sites known to have a Sony bias? Hell, I can't name one.

Now I'm not saying there's a media bias. I personally think Gears 2 is the best 360 game this year and deserves excellent scores. I just know that there are some sites with a proven bias which is demonstrated over and over again - then there are sites like IGN which haven't seemed to go one way or the other. It just so happens this is their opinion. More power to em.

I thought Gears 2 smashed R2 into the ground when it came to the story, AI, and co-op fun. I also give it the graphical edge.

R2 was better online but the co-op was weird with the 4:3 aspect ratio.

I played through R2 first, beat it, and got Gears 2 a couple weeks later. Best decision I've made in a while as Gears 2 was insanely fun on split-screen co-op.

While IGN are just about the only site(of the majors) that I feel has any integrity whatsoever, and I believe it's an honest review again, I still don't feel you can really compare the two games directly like this. FPS v TPS? Both are great games-no doubt about it whatever's been written here-but if you prefer a FPS then you go for R2 if not probably Gears2. I just don't see where the direct parrallels are, tbh.

I have a genuine grudge against MS as a company but wouldn't ever let it spill over into what I think of the games on each platform(I just got really miffed about the number of times my 360 died on me before I'd had enough and feel MS shouldn't have been allowed to release a product with such a huge fail rate-but hey that's just what happened to me, yknow?)and I was over at a mates playing Gears2 for the first week after release and it's better than the first game(one of the few I miss now I don't own a 360)but the improvement in R2(managed to get a copy yesterday luckily)is far greater and that may be whats influenced IGN here. I agree about the relative merits of both the single and multiplayer aspects of the games as well-what they've said is right but the fact remains that most people who own a 360 don't own a PS3 and folk do say things without knowing what each game is really like. I've played both now and being really straight I enjoyed tham equally overall but don't see why there isn't room in the world for both considering they aren't even really the same genre.

Thing is if this had been on a site I have less respect for I'd have wondered if they'd done it to get hits by stoking the fanboys' flames.

epic made gears2 off of their own engine and the game still has tearing,slowdowns,glitches,scr een tearing, horrible clipping issues or Collision Detection problems. i promise everybody that DOM will get lost on you or get stuck on a wall or on top of a stump;if you play through the SP enough. every since gears1 he has done this to me. He is the AKA Carmine. lol if epic can not make a clean game off of their own engine then who can(Sknight). This is why they were sued by Sknights. the engine sucks. They had more time and the game is still the same with minor improvements from the last game. you still are fighting 8 enemies at a time. Epic try to smuggle in a boomer,reaper,ticker or a "dog rider" after you kill 5 of the total 8 coming for you. Gears2 has a some really big boards but you will only fight 8 enemies in the foreground at a time. the boards are design well for a war but you are only fighting vacationing locust. the background look good and there are hundred of enemies in that background but not the foreground. epic needs to bring 20 of those locust into the foreground. the boards can support it but the engine can not. gears is a great concept but poor execution with the current engine. Her is example of poor design. Spoiler Alert!!!

The fight inside of the worm body. the worm body has a good design. you are only fighting 6 to 8 enemies of one type at a time and nothing else. they could of had hundreds of little parsites coming for you but nope only 6 to 8. you run around cutting five veins and done... a monster that big should of had 100 or more different parsite inside of its body. Example tape worm,hook worm,round and worm. they should put legs on these creature and have them spit acid at you or swarm in packs. the point is that they could of done more not less....

the online is just bad. i like the old setup. i host a macth with 15 rounds or more. there was so much up and down on the score board throuhout the match. fun!! you play a match now as low as two or as high as five. this is not worth the 20 minutes or more of connection issues before the match starts. most of the matches i play or laggy/glitchy as well. i have SBC so its not me.!!

R2 has none of the tearing,slowdowns,glitches,scr een tearing, horrible clipping issues or Collision Detection problems in the SP. The water effects falling off the wall is the only bad spot in the game. R2 has 30 to 40 enemies on screen at a time in the FOREGROUND not back ground.... you are fighting three tpyes of air enemies and over 10 types land enemies at a time same time. the game is fire!!! i do wish the chimera would throw more then one type of gernade at you. the MP side of the 8coop has clipping issues or Collision Detection problems. last the 60mp has none of the problems above. R2 has delivered at the end of the day!! Gears2 added tape to a broken engine and call it a seq... Gears2 is still a fun game but i prefer R2 for the entire package...

ran into this issue a few times. But the most annoying issue was that Dom would sometimes disappear on me or just freeze in place. It usually happened in the Hollow levels and once in the Nexus right before the battle with Skorge.

This glitch did provide a humorous moment though. Towards the end of Act 3, when you hijack the gunboat, instead of getting in the boat with me Dom pulled a Jesus and just sorta floated out over the water. However, instead of moving he just stood out in the water firing in circles as the gunboat I was on sped away.

I went through the entire sequence alone on the boat. Dom finally decided to join me on the boat during the fight with the Leviathan. But he decided to walk on water again after I died fighting the monster.

R2 single player is poor.

personally, i LOVE it.

i also don't mind that most of the juiciest story tidbits are in intel scattered throughout.

i actively sought out the intel, because it was a fun diversion. the info i got in the intel really helped to piece together and explain the story and set-pieces.

sure, if you want be like a reviewer and just bulldog your way through the campaign mode, you can, but it's much more rewarding to explore the environments (which are quite large), and not only take in the excellent visuals, but locate the intel (most of which are NOT hidden very far off the main "path").

the overall story being told, minus intel, is still more interesting than MOST FPS titles, and the story is loads better than what's going on in the Gears story (in my opinion), but the story WITH intel is extremely well thought out.

it's not so much that Insomniac is giving you a narrative, but moreso giving you a WORLD to live in, and the campaign mode is simply that world viewed through ONE character's eyes.

i expect big things from Resistance 3, especially in light of some great twists near the end of part 2.

I personally thought the R2 campaign kicked ass. Super Human was too easy this time though. FOM campaign was way better. I think most people just suck at Resistance and the campaign overwhelms them. The story is great if you read all of the intel. I don't think Insomniac should be knocked for not spoon feeding the story to everyone, if you really want to know the story so bad, you'll find it.

i have both games and i have to say that its a matter of taste. the single player is without a doubt better for gears2. R2 only has things u pick up to tell the story and not everybody will find them. in multiplayer gears2 is inferior to resistance resistance 2 is my favourate online for a shooter. the coop for both is great but im gonna have to say resistance is better 8 players and a seperate campaign is better than 4 players same old campaign. at first i liked gears better i even beat it first but now that ive beat both single players i like resistance better... just my opinion

If you have a PS3 get Resistance 2, it is a great game. If you have a 360 get Gears of War 2, it is a fantastic game. If you own both consoles, like I do, get both games if you can. I do have to admit, though, that I like Gears 2 quite a bit better. I enjoy the gameplay more and it seems much more polished and epic overall. They are both very good games though.

am i the only person who doesnt see a difference between gears1 and 2 graphics. the characters look the same the game still takes place in the dark in most of the levels. r2 has completely different levels and much bigger levels. in the end 60 is better than 10 any way you put it so r2 is better than gears2 this dude in the video proves it. sort of.
