The reviews are a bit harsh overall...

but with many of those games that received bad scores (R2 and Mirror's Edge) it seems like they were getting very good scores or only average scores, so not too surprising considering Edge is such a harsh mag.

Then again it all might be to generate sales of the magazine (negative reviews bring people in droves to check them out)

Isn't edge the most trusted game magazine out there? From a developers point of view I believe they are pretty reputable. Heck, even N4G advertises in their magazine.

I've got to say I pretty much disagree completely with each and every one of their reviews for PS3 games/multiplatform games on PS3. As well as Left 4 Dead - that score is way too high. Even if I liked the gameplay in L4D it still wouldn't deserve a 9 because it simply doesn't have enough content.

Imo Mirror's Edge deserves a 6/10. If you haven't played it don't comment back.

What I thought killed the game was the constant trial & error approach you have to use to get past each area. It gets boring fast and the game is limited so that you can never get any better than the level design itself. If they had used some subtle arrows that indicated where you are supposed to go the game would have been a little better. You basically get chased most of the time and if you run in the wrong direction or jump off the wrong ledge you need to endure a frustrating load time before you can try again, and eventually fail as soon as you approach new obstacles. Mirror's Edge is more or less Dragons Lair in a shiny parkour coat.

The other scores are crazy. I think Banjo deserves a 7, but only if Fallout 3 and Resistance 2 get 9's.

OK, now I realize they're of different genres, but... Banjo Kazooie gets a higher score than Resistance 2? Are they on crack? Resistance 2 is a far better than 6 out of 10 game. FAR better. That is just an obscenely low score.

And a 9 out of 10 for Left 4 Dead? That game is no better than Resistance 2. Not saying it's worse, either, but it doesn't have as much to offer as Resistance 2, despite that what it does offer is done very well.

And a 7 for Fallout 3? Are they absolutely joking? That game is massive, with great writing, it's fun, it's just all-around a well done game. What the hell are they thinking?

I agree with you completely, after the "Wow, a FPS that's not really a FPS" gloss dulls, there's almost nothing on Mirror's Edge. I played the demo twice and after that, I was bored mindless. Personally, I'd give it a 6.8, there's an original Xbox game that's like Mirror's Edge, but more fun.

I'd give Resistance 2 an 8.3, CoD: WaW a 7.5 and Banjo Kazooie an 8.0

Edge have always been ridiculously harsh for scoring. They gave Bioshock and Metal Gear 4 both 8/10 and they're both easily 10's, let's not joke about that. Gears got a 9 and R2 got a 6, seems that pretty much every1 loves Gears 2 (for good reason) and some people don't think R2 is that great and others think it's amazing. And Fallout a 7? Haven't played it but that seems off the mark as well. I think Edge love standing out and that's the only reason they do it. They're not biased, they're just so harsh to certain games which don't deserve it.

why are bioshock and MGS instantly 10/10? In your eyes maybe but i couldnt give BioShock a 10 coz it has no multiplayer. MGS was a great game, maybe a 10, but i didnt like it as much as the first one on PSone so i would mark it down for not being as good as an old game.

I havent played resistance or fallout yet but i am dubious about these scores. Endwar 8/10 - i hated it.

At the end of the day these are someones opinions, you cant really argue with them. Just dont take it to heart if they gave your beloved game a bad score, it doesnt make the game any worse for you does it?

EDGE usually awards innovation and polish, anything else they down. Though I'm not saying R2 or CoD: WaW or Mirror's Edge are bad, they're nothing special. Essentially, they're all basically souped up Goldeneye 007 FPSes. Mirror's Edge is a souped up version of an original Xbox game, I don't remember the name but it's quite similar.

Wow, if these guys are going to be this harsh on video games, they shouldn't even be taken seriously, or they shouldn't even be reviewing games at all.

There's no way in hell Fallout 3 is a 7/10. I have the game and after putting in over 22 hours, I would give Fallout 3 a 9/10, the game is awesome. I have Resistance 2, but haven't started playing it yet (because I want to finish Fallout 3 first), but considering that review sites like X-Play gave R2 a 5/5 and IGN gave R2 a 9.5/10, Edge's review score is WAY off the mark.

Too many games on that list are underscored.

I have magazines here that are 15-20 years old, and even back then 9's and 10 were easily given to mediocre games, like Body Blows (Amiga), Eternal Champions, A CENSORED(!) Mortal Kombat on SNES, FIFA93, etc etc etc etc. No difference between now and back then.

Reviewers score a game they feel it should be scored, It's their own opinion of a game, and doesnt have to agree with 'popular' opinion.

1 guy giving Mirror's Edge doesnt mean it's a bad game. It means this guy didnt like it, for whatever reason that might be (I LOVED the demo and I will buy it).

I do think that certain reviewers are overly critical, some are inconsistent, some are just plain bad, etc etc.

It's just some dude's opinion. I'm 32 years old myself. I've been gaming ever since it pretty much started. Many of these reviewers are younger than me. I make up my own mind about a game, not basing it on 1 review from some dude that I hardly know.

The mags i used to read always seemed to have a 90% game of the month and a couple of 80%'s, but Edge has always been the same (I'm 34 if it helps)
But, the thing i like about Edge reviews is that they're so well written. You may disagree with a review, but you do get a good idea of what the reviewer thought was right/wrong with it, unlike some reviews where you get a list of moans and then, whap, 89%...???

Another thing to note about edge is that the review section is only about 20 pages long (out of about 150). Edge is more a magazine which specialises in the people behind the games rather than bragging about 'exclusive reviews' on the cover.

Nothing is wrong with L4D except it is repetitive. Also SP Team AI isn't what it was made out to be. Those people run backwards like track stars. I have it preordered on Steam and I played both the 360 and PC demo. They are the same. No one is knocking the 360 here. The fact they have that game over Fallout 3 is ridiculous. Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead the only AAA on 9 out of 10 average in Edge. They see the quality of these games.

Resistance 2 blows indeed. Only thing is "60 multiplayer wow it must be great!". Nope it isn't. Its about quality, not quantity. Mirrors Edge has new gameplay but isn't the Messiah. Gameplay needs to be better then that.

Fallout 3 well it seems Oblivion with guns and a different surrounding. Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead are the only main hits in this list, anyone can agree that knows the games.

It's not only that they gave a 6 - some may argue all they want that 6 is an "OK" score - but I think the overall tone of the review was pretty negative. They list all the flaws of R2 in the captions...

What is really annoying me right now is that they devote ONE (yes just one) paragraph to the co-op in R2. Now from what I've heard, the co-op is the best bit. But the most descriptive thing they had to say was "it's partially successful", and then criticised the map design. That's completely ridiculous in my eyes.

Competitive multiplayer gets a single sentence.

I can understand their AI & graphics criticisms, but when they give a game like L4D a 9 which actually doesn't really HAVE AI (enemies just run at you), and has inferior graphics to R2, it makes their credibility go out the window (if they had any to begin with).

i have the game, i've beaten the game, and i think it's AWESOME.

i don't really know what kind of complaints i'd lob at the AI, because the enemy AI is sharp as a tack. they do EVERYTHING they can to destroy you, even using the secondary fire on their weapons.

the Ally AI is pretty damn good too, and i've had my bacon saved by them on more than one occasion.

the complaints i hear about enemies SOLELY attacking you is only partially true. generally, you are fighting alongside 5-8 other soldiers. you are being attacked by, often, over 30+ enemies AT THE SAME TIME. in a situation like that, yes, you are often being targeted by more than one enemy, and yes, it will feel like all eyes are on you.

i've had my entire squad wiped out because of being overwhelmed by enemy fire.

the feeling is intense, not frustrating, at least to me.

as for map design? i don't have any complaints. in single OR co-op, or competitive.

i enjoy the levels and the way they're laid out.

it seems like the reviewers at EDGE are disgruntled failed game designers who get their jollies off of nitpicking the obvious hard work of other, more talented, and ACTUAL game developers.

they have a chip on their shoulder, and they should be ignored, REGARDLESS of the console they are reviewing for. their criteria is obviously all over the place when it comes to their "reviews."

There is something seriously against the trend for most of these reviews though. Now Gears 2 - fine. I can believe a 9/10. Left 4 Dead - well I didn't like the demo particularly, and furthermore, this game offers... a co-op mode. That's it. Compare with Resistance 2 (in which the co-op is INCREDIBLY similar, the graphics are superior, the player count is double, and the mechanics have 10000x more depth), which has co-op as just 1/3 of the entire package, which gets a 6/10.

Is quantum of solace _really_ almost as good as Resistance 2?

The Valkyria Chronicles score seems a little out of kilter with the general review trend; look at the user reviews for the game on N4G - it doesn't look like a 7/10 game.

I've never trusted Edge and I don't think I ever will. You can say that these are just giving their opinion but it seems incredibly biased to me.

Exactly thor. I feel the same way as well. I wouldn't have minded if they gave R2 an 8/10 but a 6/10? Did they actually play the damn game? And Mirror's Edge is a good game. I played the demo and it's very interesting. Valkyria Chronicles is awesome as well. It was sold out at my local store so I have to wait until next week to get it or order from Amazon.

i have no doubt that Gears of War 2 deserves a 9/10. why WOULDN'T it deserve high scores?

i haven't played Left4Dead yet, so i can't vouch for it's score, but i'm also sure it's worthy of high scores, as Valve makes quality games.

on the other hand, they are so off base with the Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, and even Call of Duty review it's laughable.

i don't know what Edge scored the original Resistance (and i'm loathe to go to their site to find out), but there is NO way, regardless of the score they gave the original, that Resistance 2 deserves a score equal to the original Resistance. it is it's superior in EVERY way, from visuals, to controls, to story, to gameplay design, to multi-player, to co-op.

even if Edge gave the original a 7, R2 would deserve at the LEAST, an 8, because of the improvements to every aspect of the original and it's design. they even overhauled the community features for the game to make it better.

i'd personally give Resistance 2 a high 9. maybe not a 9.5, but most certainly in between a 9 and 9.5. the game is simply an exceptional experience.

i'm not going to make claims that Edge is bias, but when ALL the PS3 exclusives (even though they've been getting praised in other places, from websites to fans), score like sh*t - and there's no denying that those are sh*t scores - and yet ALL the 360 exclusives for the month are the ONLY games to score 9's, i have to wonder.

i think even those that aren't Resistance 2 fans will admit that the score is rather unfair.

quality single player campaign with big, epic battles and bosses (trust me, the battles are large scale and the bosses are HUGE. even the regular enemies tower over you)

8 player, class based co-op mode that has a separate narrative to the single player campaign.

60 player, objective based competitive mode. you can have large AND small scale battles; whatever suits your preference.

i just don't see how a game executed so well (they had separate teams for EACH of the three main modes in the game) can get a score so low except out of spite.

Edge is a joke. the shameful thing is that people like you will eat it up and take it as gospel truth, and avoid missing out on not one, not two, not three, but SIX quality games (Resistance 2, Mirror's Edge, Call of Duty, Valkyria Chronicles, Fallout 3, and SOCOM), because of these reviews from edge.

and while i think people should PLAY the game for themselves before making a decision, it's obvious that many people base their buying decisions on OTHER people's opinions.

i know you didn't ask me, but i think Fallout 3 is excellent. no matter WHAT platform you pick it up on.

like i said in another post, i've sunk about 30 hours into Fallout 3, and have only completed a handful of story missions. i get a lot of joy from the game just wandering around, looking for new locales and Vaults, and getting wrapped up in side quests (seriously, i was exploring, and i found this new location, and got sidetracked for an hour doing a quest for them. it wasn't even a story quest, but it was certainly awesome).

i highly recommend Fallout 3 to anyone who hasn't picked it up yet, had a marginal interest in Oblivion (or DIDN'T. personally, i found Oblivion to be boring, so i just watched my fiance play it, but Fallout 3 totally captivates me).

you definitely feel like a part of that world, and it's probably due to the very well done tutorial, which literally births you into their universe.

it deserves WAY more than a 7/10.

i cant make up my mind about this game. ive also put about 30 hours into it, and do like the story, depth and scope of this game. its fun, no doubt.

but a part of me is saddened when comparing this game to the first two. they really have simplified the game mechanics, doing away with armor class, different types of armor piercing ammo, dodging, aimed shots with melee weapons, as well as simplifying the perk and skill systems. i miss a lot of these from the old games, and it makes me hate fallout3 when i think about it.

but then i start playing it again, and have a total blast. i feel that they took out the hardcore rpg elements and replaced them with simpler game mechanics to appeal to a broader audience. in fact, i have heard many fps gamers picking this title up, and am sad to predict that they probably will not find this a fulfilling experience because of weakened fps elements, as i have not found this the fulfilling rpg experience that i had with the first two.

i hope this by no means stops anyone from buying the title. it is definitely a fun game to play, and one that will keep you busy for at least 30-40 hours, something that is rare in games these days. It also is a unique experience in terms of themes, story, and openness. i hated oblivion, but am finding fallout to be quite enjoyable.

so in conclusion and on topic: a 7/10 for this game is a joke, honestly. deserves at least an 8-9 in my book.

Edges reviews of Call of Duty, Mirror's Edge, Resistance 2, SOCOM, Valkyria Chronicles, and Fallout 3 ARE NOT consistent with other places.

Mirror's Edge is roughly averaging in the B's (a "B" numerically, is roughly translated to an 8. a "C" is roughly in the 7 range, and naturally, an "A" is roughly in the 9 range. anything less than a 6 should be considered "D"s and below).

Resistance is averaging in the 9's across various publications.
Valkyria Chronicles is averaging in the high 8's and 9's.
COD: WAW is averaging in the 8's.
Fallout 3 is averaging in the high 9's.
SOCOM is averaging in the high 7's low 8's, due to the widespread server issues that hurt it's score. if you don't believe me, check out 1ups original review, where they gave it a C, and then, after the network patch, they reviewed it AGAIN, and gave it a B+.

the fact that Edge has a history of giving 360 exclusives VERY high scores, and PS3 exclusive uncharacteristically LOW scores, is most certainly something to raise eyebrows, but that's not what most of us, 360 and PS3 owner alike are having an issue with.

we have issue with the fact that Edges scores are so FAR below the averages that these CLEARLY quality games have been receiving thus far.

yes, reviews are opinions, but it seems like the reviewers of these games had sand in their vagina, or forgot what a GOOD game is.

i say they should be forced to play Kane and Lynch, Turok, Blacksite, Legendary, and Frontlines for a YEAR straight, THEN allow them to play a game like Fallout 3, Resistance 2, SOCOM, Mirror's Edge, and Valkyria Chronicles, so they can more accurately gauge between a quality, 8/10 game, or a mediocre, average 6/10 and below game.

I used to play CS all the time. I would get accused of hacking so much I had to get my own server. I was GOOD with the KB/M. My transition into shooters with the controller has been less than smooth. I am getting a lot better than I used to be, but like they say: Practice makes perfect. I still would love to see all games include KB/M support. Epic did it and it was the first UT I bought.

i played World at War last night, and it's not a AAA title, but it's not god awful. a 6/10 is extreme.

Resistance 2 is GREAT. period. the single player is really good (much, MUCH better than the first), the co-op campaign is addicting, and the competitive mode is equal to, and often BETTER, than contemporary games.

Mirror's Edge is a good, if nauseating game. the concept is sound, and the developer gets kudos for at LEAST trying something different.

SOCOM: Confrontation had some growing pains, but now that the server issues have been patched, the game is great.

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most unique, and enjoyable RTS titles i've played in a long time. it should, at the LEAST, get an 8.5. at the most, a 9+.

and Fallout 3? 7/10? i don't think so. the world is huge and immersive, with unique and interesting characters, some genuinely creepy locales and enemies, and a fun combat system (VATS never gets old). while the story is standard, the point of the game is to make your OWN story. i've spent a good 30 hours into the game, and i've BARELY touched the story quests (i think i've only done 4 story quests; the rest was me wandering around, discovering sh*t and unleashing my own brand of justice on the Wasteland). at the LEAST, Fallout 3 should get a 9/10. at the most, a 9.5/10.

L4D and Gears 2 deserve their scores. i'm not a fan of Gears, and i'm a little annoyed at Valve for their complete dismissal of the PS3, but they make good games, and even Gears is a good series (just not my thing). so the 9/10 scores for them are probably more than warranted, and i agree with them.

but their scores for the others are just...WRONG. i know opinions are just that, opinions, but WHO did they have review these games? the gamers themselves that have those games have already sung their virtues, and other publications have also been impressed with them.

i can understand 1 point lower than the norm, but we're talking about scoring discrepancies of 3 points or higher from the average score?

is Fallout 3 really so bad that it deserved a FULL 3 points deducted from it's score?

ok, lets analyze this for a second, and i'll use Fallout 3 because it's multi-platform:

the highest score it can get on Edge's scale is a 10/10, right?

my issues with the game are the PSN message notification pause. that's worthy of a demerit until they package it. but not a full POINT demerit. more like a point-something or other. maybe a .5 at the most.

the game is definitely buggy, and it freezes sometimes (my fiance has had more freezes than i have, however). take off another .5 points.

some people may be disappointed to learn that the game ISN'T really a full-fledged FPS game. the manual aiming on the console version is made more difficult by a tiny targeting reticule. it's obvious this game was designed with the precision of a mouse in mind. even so, the VATS system renders manual aiming practically unnecessary except in the most extreme of circumstances. for sticklers, however, take off another .5.

right now, we've subtracted 1.5 points from the total score of Fallout 3, based off of the major negatives of the game (that i've personally come across so far). that leaves the score at 8.5.

now, lets do it another way.

an average game on a scale from 1-10 is 5, correct?

lets do Fallout 3 again, but instead ADD points.

base score: 5

Fallout 3 features fantastic graphics, and detailed, immersive world that are far beyond average. not many open world games this generation have reached this level of detail.

add 1 point.

base score is now 6:

Fallout 3 also features a unique, and enjoyable VATS combat system. the system lets you individually target body parts, so you can strategically take down enemies (for example, you can disable their arms and legs, rendering them useless, before moving in for the kill). while the manual weapon aiming isn't as precise, as it's evident that the game was designed for keyboard and mouse support, but the controllers most certainly get the job done when VATS is unavailable (the VATS meter recharges rather quickly, however, so there's almost no reason not to use it exclusively).

add 1 point.

base score is now 7.

Fallout 3's story is on the relatively light side (you are a young man/woman who emerges from the Vault in search of their father), but the narrative really only serves as a springboard for YOUR adventure. Bethesda wisely chose to offer you some guidelines, but the "real" story of Fallout 3 unfolds as you travel the wastelands yourself, discovering it's secrets, and many, MANY side-quests and characters. there is also a fair bit of emergent gameplay. a simple example happened early in the game:

my character was escaping the Vault, and in my original game (i created a secondary character), my character bumped into a friendly NPC who chatted me up, giving me helpful advice. simple.

HOWEVER, during my second playthrough with my new character, the friendly NPC accidentally got in the path of a robot using a flamethrower to kill some Radroaches, and he was killed. i didn't get to chat him up, but i did loot his corpse and take his valuables.

there is a lot of this emergent gameplay throughout Fallout 3, and what makes it so remarkable, is that it's completely random. me and my fiance are currently playing through the game, and she's had an entirely different experience than me outside of the main quest. and even during the main quest, there are so many little choices you can make that alter the overall flow of the story.

hell, my fiance made a random stop at a location, and discovered her missing father; barely a few hours into the game. finding him was such a big deal, but ultimately, it was just a small cog in the big picture of the game.

Fallout 3 goes above and beyond Oblivion in terms of the immersion, depth, and detail in the world and many other "sandbox RPGs" like it.

add another 1.5 points to the gameplay.

base score is now 8.5. well, based off of MY opinion of the game, of course. personally, i'd give it HIGHER, a 9+, because i absolutely love it, but if you start with a base, average score, 5, and then add or subtract points based off of the key elements of game design (Control, Visuals, Design, Story; if applicable), then you can pretty much get a fair assessment of any game.

we've ALL played truly terrible games (try The Lost World on the PS1, or Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness for just two examples of really SH*TTY game and game design. throw in Legendary for some extra credit on even WORSE game design), but we very rarely really point out what makes the game terrible, we simply say, "i'm not having any fun, so i don't want to play this game anymore."

well, the job of the reviewer is to explain WHY they aren't having fun, and be reasonable and objective about it. very few reviewers these days really explain why they don't like a game, and instead prefer to do laundry lists of their nitpicks ("i can't send an invite across games! waahh, minus 5 points!"), even when those nitpicks don't ACTUALLY negatively affect gameplay in a big way, or is even vital to the overall enjoyment of the game ("Uncharted didn't have Trophies at launch! minus 10 points! so what if the game is AWESOME even without them!").

like i said in another thread, most review sites these days don't have consistent criteria when reviewing games, and reviewing games in the same genre, or even across genre.

there's absolutely NO reason to reference Gears of War 2 in a Resistance 2 review, or vice versa. the games are in two totally different genres. they aren't the same. PERIOD.

i refuse to believe that Resistance 2 is in the same league as other FPS titles like The Darkness, Prey, Turok, Blacksite, etc, which scored equal, if not BETTER scores from Edge than Resistance 2. that just doesn't compute, because it's NOT true. what criteria did Edge use when reviewing The Darkness, Prey, Turok, Blacksite when determining their score that convinced them that Resistance 2 was worthy of a similar score.

the same thing applies to the other low scorers this issue. WHAT makes them "mediocre," in comparison to other games in that genre that scored well?

reviewers don't answer those questions, and instead choose to fuel fanboy wars with sh*t like "Gears of War 2 vs Resistance 2! Round 2!" yeah, an 3PS vs an FPS. that makes a LOT of sense. /sarcasm.

This is my first of very very few messages I'll ever post onto N4G, because to be honest, I have nothing but contempt for most of the ill formed irrationally bipolar discussion that occurs here.

Figboy, you've devoted reams and reams in this thread trying to justify your purchases. You also seem to have joined in with the Edge hates PS3 conspiracy theorists, plotting points where none exist and have totally forgotten that Edge gave LBP a 10, and placed FFXII in their top 10 games of all time.

Your ideas over what a review should and shouldn't be fly from all angles, some totally contradicting the other. You try and enforce your opinions of Fallout 3 as irrefutable fact which everyone should follow. You're too hung up on the number 7 just because IGN deems that number bad, when you'll find that the text is mostly positive.

(Bonus - I'll give you some background to Edge and open world, their editorial stance has historically been negative. They feel that the onus on the player to explore without direction is either confusing, lazy, leads to bad pacing or bad structure. GTA III got a 6 (I totally disagree), and I think Morrowind did too (again, I totally disagree). They gave Oblivion an 8, it'd obviously taken a step forward, and if you read the Fallout review, they say it improves on Oblivion in some respects, but doesn't really advance it much. It's been two years, and their bar has moved higher.)

Whiny nitpickers? You have the text available to you on Flickr. You'll find that the criticism is very rarely the nitpicking sense, instead Edge offers the most cogent analysis of fundamental design issues.

Edge don't award scores for trying. You either succeed or you fail, a failed experiment is still a failure. And that's it's analysis of Mirror's Edge, Edge will not pull its punches. Compare the Edge review of the game, with Eurogamer's, and you'll see whereas the tone of Eurogamer's is mostly as negative as Edge's, it scores it 8/10 anyway. It's either because they're afraid of rocking the boat, or are doing it to award "innovation". Edge clearly states in the conclusion, that there are two ways of looking at the game, theirs being less forgiving. (read IGN UK's Fallout 3 review for a similar "don't rock the boat" score for a review negative in tone)

But the most inconsistent piece of your criticism, and one that is flat out contradictory is your insistence upon the beacon of Metacritic scores. You ask people to "be people, not sheeple", yet you chastise a publication from boldly putting forward their analysis, because it strays from the sheeple line. You suggest that instead of forming their own opinions, they should second guess the consensus opinion? I'm of no doubt that some of the worthless online publications already do this in order to avoid a forum backlash, but where does this stop? You'll no longer be guessing what the consensus is, but what the other publications guess the consensus will be.

You judge the harshness of Edge's scores in comparison to other publications, yet fail to take into account that some, such as Gamespot, IGN et al. have only recently taken to using more than the 8-10 range (take a look at the 2006 analysis of all Gamespot and IGN scores, other magazines may have similar averages, but that's because they only review the better games whereas websites reviews all). A 6/10 from Edge mean's it's above average, whereas a 6/10 from IGN probably means it's a turd.

I've already mentioned above some Edge reviews that I disagree with, yet I respect their opinion because of the quality of their prose, and their clear succinct analysis of the game's design, structure and flaws. The criticisms I've mentioned above are by no means dedicated solely towards you Figboy, I'm sure many have similar issues. Only that you've made such verbose posts in this thread, that you're most likely to appreciate some kind of measured response.

Well.. there was a few things.
1 - Left 4 Dead isn't a Xbox exclusive, learn you facts.
2 - Only because 'you' claim Resistance 2 is better then the first, doesn't mean everybody will. Remember reviews are purely based on opinion.
3 - (I haven't played Resistance 2, so I'm doing this of what I've heard.) All I can tell that is actually different from the first one to the second is the co-op, larger enemies and slightly polished, in all honesty that doesn't make the game get straight 10's from every publication under the sun. The first Resistance was pure mediocre, the shooting, the story, the graphics, and the second one doesn't sound that much different.

The funny part is, most review outlets such as magazines and websites harp their OPINION as a "definitive fact." Considering that game reviews are entirely subjective, and review scores are ENTIRELY arbitrary, well I can see why people would be upset. The game probably has more then most games to date because of the dynamic AI director which means no enemy, weapon drops, bosses etc. will never, ever be in the same place.

I've been a subsciber to Edge for about 7 years now. I like their original and honest reviews.
However the review scores that really pissed me off were Fallout a 7! Should be a 9 in my opinion. A while back I was equally pissed when they gave the great game Bioschock a low score ( I think that was also a 7 )

They are certainly the strictest out there, and don't care about pissing off fan boys. Sometimes they are a bit too "highbrow" in their reviews, but generally, they do a good job, and you know if they give a game 9 or (rarely) a 10 it's gonna be excellent on many levels.

So, for example, Resistance 2 gets a 9.5 from IGN and a 6 from Edge. Those are the extreme ends of the spectrum. Personally, I don't agree with either of those scores--I think the IGN one is too high and the Edge one is too low. I would give Resistance 2 an 8.5. The point is, these are the sincere perspectives of the editors/reviewers at Edge and if you feel differently there is no reason to attack them for their opinions any more than you should be attacked for yours.

first things first, i don't think Edge hates the PS3, nor do i think. i think Edge has become a rather sh*tty publication since this generation of consoles started. PERIOD. why would i care if Edge gave LBP a 10, or put FFXII in their top ten games of all time? this ISN'T about the PS3 vs 360, or media bias, although there is no doubt that many a publication, since E3 2006, have been especially hard on Sony and the PS3. even after Blu Ray won, multi-plats became on equal parity with the 360, the Trophy patch, the boost in quality software, and the constant improvements of the PSN, the gaming media at large STILL seems to hold a grudge for that E3 full of $600 price tags and CGI Target renders.

THEN, even after games like Killzone 2 have finally been shown in gameplay form, AND playable by the media and beta testers, the gaming media STILL wants to sh*t talk, after being proven WRONG by Guerrilla Games. they had such a field day bemoaning the Killzone 2 "target render," when their bubble was popped at E3 2007, they were bitter (just look at sites like kotaku and joystiq, and destructoid, to name a few. the tone in their PS3 stories after KZ2 proved them wrong is quite apparent).

but like i said before, i'm commenting that Edge's views seem extremely off on their assessment of these games.

personally, i believe the gaming media has FORGOT what makes a good or bad game. and yes, they DO nitpick titles to death. i think my own personal criteria is FAIR when it comes to reviewing games.

you don't rate a game down because a few minor pixels may be missing. in my opinion, there are roughly four basic principles that apply to most games in terms of game design:

Controls, Visuals, Gameplay, and Sound. you can most certainly have one of those elements be perfect and the rest terrible, but when ALL four combine, you get a stellar, often memorable gaming experience.

you can't play the game properly without spot on controls. if controls are terrible, the gaming experience is ruined. see games like Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, The Lost Word: Jurassic Park, and Oni, for examples of games that suffer because of poor controls.

as for graphics, no, they don't have to be state of the art, "partial pixel pro-leatherization," but they should be in line with the standards of the genre. very few games go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to visuals. games like Half Life 2, MGS4, Uncharted, Gears of War, and other jawdropping games don't come around every day. yes, there are some good-looking games out there, but few reach the high bar set by the few i listed above (hell, the 360 is STILL looking for a game to put Gears of War down visually). there IS a minimum bar of graphical detail we are willing to accept each generation of gaming. look at Splinter Cell: Double Agent on the PS3, or Spider-Man 3. both games are FAR below what should be expected of this generation, especially when the GAMER is paying $60 a pop for their entertainment.

when you have games that are pushing the bar like Bioshock and MGS4, why drop $60 on Turok instead?

Gameplay and game design are vital to a good gaming experience. games like Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Halo all had EXCELLENT game design, on top of tight controls and beautiful visuals. games with poor controls and poor game design are apparent, because you AREN'T having fun with the game. i've already listed a few games above that are poor, so check those out for more examples of poor game design.

Sound is looked at as being unimportant by most folks, but whether subliminally, or overtly, sound is as much a vital part to gaming as the controls, visuals, and game design. poor sound is generally apparent, even if you don't quite know why it sounds "off." you don't have to be an art major to know when a drawing's perspective is off, so you don't have to be a sound engineer when a game has poor sound.

the four components listed above, in the best games, work TOGETHER, and bring us a memorable experience. in my opinion, i think a good game has those four elements singing in harmony.

Resistance 2 has rock solid controls. they are smooth, responsive, and really, what more do you need?

Resistance 2 also has FANTASTIC visuals. i'm playing the game on a 40" LCD 720p Samsung HDTV, and the game is visually stunning. Insomniac clearly put a lot of work into making the world of Resistance 2 visually rich, and it's a HUGE improvement over the visuals of the "drab" original.

Resistance 2 offers a LOT of gameplay for your $60 (or whatever the price may be in your region). the single player campaign is VERY good. i'd say it's epic in scope. the missions are big and intense, as are the firefights. is the gameplay perfect? no, but there are few issues i have with the game outside of some "trial and error" moments. the co-op campaign is one of the most addicting experiences i've had in gaming. i'm an RPG fan, so the level up and class system really excite me. the mission structure is sound, and the battles are tough. a lot tougher than the single player, meaning you NEED your teammate to be on the ball with their "jobs," or you won't survive.

i admittedly haven't played enough of the competitive mode, but from what i've played, it was fast paced, hectic, and the weapons are a lot of fun to use on other human players. the large scale battles are also really well done. the choice of having small, "intimate battles," and huge, 60 player epic battles is nice.

aside from a few network connection issues my online experience with R2 has been lag free (although that's not always going to be the case; it's an inevitability with online systems). co-op and MP in Resistance 2 is genuinely it's strongest point, and a lot of fun. possibly more fun than the single player.

the Sound in Resistance 2 is also excellently implemented. from the unintelligible chatter of the Chimera, to the disturbing sounds of a Grim waiting to burst from his pod, or the startup of the Bullseye, the sound in Resistance 2 is top notch. the chatter from your squad is well done as well.

i don't see how Resistance 2 is a worse game than games like The Darkness, Prey, Turok, and other games that Edge has scored equally or HIGHER than R2. i've played ALL of those, and i genuinely think Resistance 2 is the better product, and like i analyzed it before, it's because of it's excellent controls, visuals, game design, and sound design. it doesn't just do one or two of those elements well, but it does ALL of them well. i've been playing games for 23 years; since the NES launched in 1985 and i got my first taste of Super Mario Bros at age 6. i've played my fair share of TERRIBLE GAMES (i actually owned the NES Friday the 13th game, the Lost World on the PS1, and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness on the PS2, to name only a few of the god-awful games i've owned and played over the years).

as a gamer that has NO need for an agenda, or even to justify my console purchase, i KNOW what games i find fun and enjoyable, and what games i believe excel at game design, and fun gameplay. i'm no less qualified to voice my opinion than the paid "reviewers" at Edge.

i do think Edge is wrong here. and also wrong in their assessments of the other games they reamed, like Fallout 3. all of those games have, at the LEAST, solid controls, visuals, game design, and sound design, so, at the LEAST, i'd expect them to get an 8. not 5's, 6's, and 7's. maybe wrong is too harsh of a word, but i think their scores are "off."

thanks, but i KNOW Edge's background, as i've been following (AND PURCHASING) their magazine for a while now, up until the quality of their publication started to drop.

i disagree that Edge offers an objective OR cogent analysis of the game. they spend the first paragraph of the Resistance 2 interview complaining about the fact that Insomniac "dared" to go bigger with Resistance 2's game design. they seem to have particular issue with the fact that the game supports a large number of players this time around. what's so bad about 8 player co-op? or 60 player Skirmish mode? it's not like you can't play with smaller groups of people, and most importantly, it's not like those 8 player co-op games, and 60 player Skirmish matches aren't FUN.

why call it "communal grinding" like it's a bad thing. MILLIONS of people play WOW on a daily basis. there are millions playing it right NOW, as i type this. MMO's are level grinds. in fact, most RPGs are level grinds, but people LIKE them. there's something alluring about leveling up your character, making him/her bigger and stronger than before. Resistance 2 has that appeal, and it is quite enjoyable to unlock more skills and equipment for your character to use while you fight alongside your buddies. what i'm trying to say is the co-op and competitive modes of the game WORK. Edge never actually says WHY this doesn't work (are the battles not organized, are the objectives unclear? do the number of players in the game bog the game down and cause significant lag?). they just run down the list of features, and top it off with "those big numbers again." yeah, what about them?

they spend the NEXT two paragraphs complaining (yes, COMPLAINING), about the switch from an unrealistic, walking human ARMY of the first game, to a more believable two weapon setup, and how Nathan is "inequipped" for the battles ahead. i've beaten the game. TWICE. first time through, i worried about the two weapon issue. about a good 30 minutes into the game, i realized that Insomniac ALWAYS made sure that there was enough ammo, and the right kind of weapon lying nearby. and it's not like you can't pick up that new weapon, use it, then pick the old one BACK UP. it just doesn't seem like a legitimate complaint. no one complained about other games that have adopted the two weapon system, why complain about Resistance 2's switch? especially since SO MANY people seemed to hate the original so much in the first place.

the NEXT paragraph complains, like many others, about Chimera singling YOU out in firefights. this complaint is somewhat understandable, but not quite true. look, it's YOU, plus 5-10 other people during a LOT of the battles in Resistance 2. you are fighting against upwards of 30 or so Chimera AT THE SAME TIME. you are practically outnumbered 2 to 1. once your soldiers start dropping like flies, why would the enemies NOT fire at you, and even before the others drop, why WOULDN'T they try and kill you? i've never had more than three or four Chimera shooting at me at once. it was never ALL THIRTY at the same time.

how do you kill 2 Titans? easy. you find the LAARK conveniently placed nearby (there's always a LAARK nearby the Titan battles, or an equally strong weapon), and you take out one. if you run out of LAARK shots on the first (which is possible, if you miss), and there are no LAARK bullets around, use whatever other weapon you have at your disposal (or lying around; there's usually also a Carbine or Bullseye lying around also), and if it's the Carbine, you use the two grenade rounds in your Secondary fire to soften them up, then fire at will until he explodes. if you have the Auger, you stand fast, pop up your shield, and fire away; the Titan's shots don't penetrate the shield. if you have grenades, use them (the Hedgehog works REALLY well). and there you go.

there's no conspiracy to make the gameplay miserable. you either think strategically when you enter a battle against 30 other enemies and a Titan or two, or you DIE. the result of these hectic battles is an incredible sense of accomplishment when you execute your strategy and win.

they also seem to begrudgingly acknowledge that the game picks up halfway through (it DOES), but they were unimpressed with the Chicago level. fair enough, but i find that really hard to believe. it is the best level in the game, and it is the game where the visuals, level design, and intensity of the firefights REALLY gel together.

i don't care if Edge doesn't pull their punches, and yes, Mirror's Edge was an experiment. personally, the game gives me motion sickness, but i think other areas of the game are executed well. i think the art design, story, and overall gameplay are a solid foundation. as an experiment, i think, for the most part, Mirror's Edge succeeds. at the least, it should get a 7/10, at the most, an 8/10. i also don't really think of Mirror's Edge as being very innovative (a buzzword that gets thrown around by EVERYONE these days). they wanted to really immerse you into the character's life, like ALL games want to do.

they just thought that buy making the screen wobble a lot when you moved would do so. in that respect, they could have used more tuning. the rest of their experiment (to craft a gameplay experience that doesn't revolve around blowing peoples heads off with various firearms, and instead revolves around an Ico-esque puzzle like design of trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B in a high intensity scenario, but wrapping it in a narrative), i think, succeeds. is Mirror's Edge for everybody? clearly no. but i don't think a 5/10 score is very fair. the game doesn't fail at fundamental design issues, and everything else about the game is rather above average.

also, Eurogamer is about as bad as Edge when it comes to the inconsistent criteria in which they review their games across the various genres, and within the same genre. an FPS should not be mentioned in a 3PS review, in the same way most logical reviewers don't mention a sports game in an RPG review. there is absolutely NO reason for publications like Eurogamer, for example, to bring up a title like Gears of War 2, when reviewing Resistance 2, or vice versa. the games are different genres, and thus the gameplay of both will be too drastically different to logically mention both in the same review. many reviews i've read of Resistance 2 make a seemingly arbitrary, or maybe obligatory to incite hits, mention of Gears of War 2. i hardly see any Resistance 2 references in many Gears 2 reviews, however.

who mentioned anything about METACRITIC? that piece of sh*t site? they don't even use the same criteria across all the consoles when choosing which sites to post their reviews from. don't get me started on metacritic. and yes, people that flock to one review and base their entire opinion of a game on that one review are being sheep. there is nothing BOLD about Edge's review of these games. they are being anal-retentive whiners, and it's clear that they've forgotten the fundamental, universal across ALL gaming platforms, rule when it comes to game: they must be FUN.

they don't need to revolutionize the genre, reinvent the wheel, defy convention, or shape the industry as we know it. they simply need to be FUN. i'm having fun with Resistance 2. i'm having fun with Call of Duty: WAW. i'm having fun with Valkyria Chronicles and SOCOM. i'm not LOOKING for things to tear the game down with like it appears that Edge has done. there is such a thing as OVER-analyzing something, and i think Edge has crossed over into that territory. they got so wrapped up in the "big numbers" of a game like Resistance 2, for example, that i think they forgot to sit back and have some fun with game. Resistance 2 isn't meant to be played in a rush. i've spent literally 2 to 3 hours a NIGHT playing through co-op. i've beaten the single player twice. each time lasting about 10-12 hours.

i've leveled up my Medic, Soldier, and Spec Ops to level 4 each so far (with my Spec Ops treading close to level 5). if i wasn't having a good time with the game, i wouldn't be playing it. i wouldn't say it's mindless fun, because it's most certainly not (a team that works together in co-op absolutely DOMINATES. it's an awesome feeling when you and 7 other people are doing thier jobs, whether healing/reviving, shielding, or supplying ammo to the Soldier, when you are in unison with those 7 people, R2 co-op is a remarkable experience).

i also find sites like Gamespot poor outlets for review scores as well. in fact, as i've said in so many posts before, i think that reviews are worthless these days. they've been diluted by the fact that the gaming industry has gotten so huge, that there is so much money to be made in this business now, that the system has lost the "niche" innocence it had when i was younger. back then, the magazines weren't always 100% free of shady deals, but they were a lot more earnest in their reviews. if they said Contra was a must have, chances are, that was right on the money. if a game like ET sucked, they let you know. and games like ET sucked because they had sh*tty gameplay, not because the graphics had some pixelization, or because they failed to live up to the graphics of ANOTHER game in a different genre, on another console, like nowadays.

i understand what you're saying about the averages of reviews like Edge, where a 6/10 means above average, which i agree it does, but that's entirely the point i was trying to make in my above comments: Resistance 2 is NOT just an above average game. and neither is Call of Duty: WAW, SOCOM, Valkyria Chronicles, and even Mirror's Edge, although ME is much closer to a 7.5/10, than the 9s that Resistance 2 and Valkyria Chronicles deserve.

i've already stated why i think R2 is in the high 9s, so i won't go through it again. but Edge is saying that the game doesn't reach above "average," and they aren't clear enough as to WHY they think that way. they through out jabs like "partially successful," and "communal grinding," but never clearly state WHY they really think that way. or WHY they even think that R2 is simply "above average."

what about the execution of the game bugs them so? ESPECIALLY in relation to the original game. is Resistance 2 REALLY a step back from it's predecessor? and i highly doubt that the loss of the gun wheel was so great that they had to take off 4 potential points from the score.

any other sequel gets graded on the improvements it's made over it's predecessors (for example, Devil May Cry 2 was graded against the original, and deemed pathetic. DMC3 was graded against 1 and 2, and deemed worthy. GTA: San Andreas was judged against GTAIII, and Vice City, and deemed worthy. every MGS sequel is judged against the original on the PS1), but Resistance 2 seems to not only be getting graded against the original, but every OTHER FPS title released so far, and a THIRD PERSON shooter on another CONSOLE.

Props on actually defending a stance with something other than pixel count and computer-analyzed frame-tearing. I love technical jargon, but most of this generation seems lost to a misconstrued view of what makes a game better.

I can't comment on R2, roommate bought it and I can't wait to play it. Only reason I haven't is because he's on the PS3 from the moment he's home until we head out at night. I believe that says something about how good the game is (he is NOT a big gamer, in fact this might be the first title he's purchased; though he's played a ton of games).

You're right, you did actually dismiss some of the conspiracy claims, only in the next sentence to reiterate those imaginary points and endorse it with a "I wonder." You say the press has been giving the PS3 a hard time, and I think lately, with the global recession looming, it has. But Edge actually declared 2008 to be the year of the PS3 back in late 2007, pretty much before everyone else. I think they called it wrong.

I sincerely doubt that you are familiar with Edge magazine, let alone a customer of theirs. Surface remarks such as Turok scoring higher than Resistance is false and easily cleared up with a bit of Googling, unless of course, you're talking about the 9/10 for Turok 2 (N64), which Edge later apologised for and admitted a mistake in their assessment.

But what is more telling is your assertion that the magazine has gone downhill since the current generation, it's subjective, but many will disagree. With the current generation, the reviews are longer and the features more relevant for the consumer, and superficially, the design has gone from strength to strength. Compare a current edition of Edge to one dating back to the PS2, and it's as clear as black and white.

I dismissed your repeated justifications for your Fallout 3 purchase as irrelevant, yet you've moved onto justifying your Resistance 2 purchase. You've given me an entire run down of your review criteria, regardless that it has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion anyway, Edge actually share some of your views. Read the Left 4 Dead review - 9/10, they don't care about how many shaders are used per pixel, the graphics are described as economical. It's the sound design, the level design, the AI director, and the art design which gives it flair. Edge do a yearly awards issue, they don't care about best graphics, or the amount of trees you can render on screen, they award for best visual design. There's a clear difference there, and one many lesser publications fail to distinguish.

It's yet again irrelevant to the points I made in my original post, but you've given an impassioned defence on grinding. Consider what you've just done, you've defended a smokescreen of a gameplay mechanic to mask where none exist. You're right, lots of people like pointlessly grinding, because the game structure isn't solid enough to support genuine progression through skill or pacing. The entire nation of Korea loves to grind, Edge obviously doesn't, and I don't either. It's why I'm not one of the millions playing Warcraft.

(Incidentally, N'Gai Croal writes a regular independent column for Edge. He's not part of the main editorial staff writing the magazine, but he too criticises Resistance 2's co-op - "Insomniac's approach is at once the most intriguing and the least fully fleshed out, mainly because it appears to have been designed with just a single strategy for success... ...Whether the enemy AI or the encounter design is to blame I can't be sure")

I'm not going to continue in picking your points apart, because none of them have any relevance to my original post in the first place. Needless to say, your criticism over Eurogamer without actually addressing to the specific piece I was referring to, and your assertion that it is erroneous to compare games from different genres are red herrings. (See comparisons between Braid and Portal, or The Club and Geometry Wars, and yes, Resistance and Gears for very valid comparisons)

As for reviews, I don't take any notice of them anyway. I've been gaming since Space Invaders and one thing I've learned is that if I think I am going to like a game, I do. Taking one persons judgement of a game to heart is sheer folly.

Guys, EDGE has known to be massively Pro XBox. And these reviews prove it again. They gave Halo3 a 10, and then Resistance a 6. You notice how the XBox exclusives get higher scores and the multiplatform games/PS3 exclusives get low scores.

EDGE are playing a very risky game since they rely on magazine sales to make money, not through their website. Like with sites that show clear fanboy-ism in their reviews (Gamespot etc) people stopped going to their websites, but if people stopped buying EDGE magazine then they will ultimately go bust.

Due to the clear Fanboy reviews I have seen in that magazine in the last year or so, I will never ever buy another EDGE magazine.

By regarding themselves as (self-appointed) arbitars of fair scoring, Edge only make their inconsistencies seem ever more glaring.

Edge gave Dead or Alive- Xtreme Beach Volleyball 8/10, one reason being that it sums up a vacation experience. I bought Dead or Alive- Xtreme Beach Volleyball brand new for a relatively small £12.00. It arguably does what it sets out to do but it is still the same short scenes, on the court, by the pool, at the shop and in the casino, about 30 seconds of entertainment, repeated over and over again. The same amount of repetition is found in some early videogames that, in my opinion, remain ludicriously over-rated by many people just because they are felt to have achieved some iconic status and because of their simplicity. But at least Dead or Alive- Xtreme Beach Volleyball excels in its visuals and sound and made a welcome change from many other violent Xbox games.

The problem is that Edge also gave 8/10 to Banjo Kazooie on the N64 and yet gave Super Mario Sunshine 9/10. Presumably they may have felt, like with Xtreme Beach Volleyball, that SMS summed up a vacation experience. But, apart from Isle Defino itself and Noki Bay, I found every single level disappointing in some way, whether it's due to a clumsy need to use Yoshi, who felt tacked on to the game, and underwhelming level design and mini games. To be fair, most magazines went too far in their praise of Super Mario Sunshine at the time but, with previous Rare games like Conker's Bad Fur Day (whatever you think of some of the content) showing what a really ambitious game looks like, to me, Luigi's Mansion was the best game featuring Mario (in a small role) on the Gamecube.

Edge is inconsistent- it seemed to mark down Bioshock because, although it was atmospheric, they felt it was linear (absolutely no bad thing in my opinion- Half Life 2, which they gave 10/10 to, is also a great on rails ghost train really) and yet they gave a much less ambitious volleyball game the same score.

If only they could see that their attempts at being fair are really just misplaced elitsim as they bend their own rules at their own will. I couldn't say for certain that the similar GamesTM are always better in this respect but they seem to be.

Well what people are saying is that 'Edge', which is the product that people buy, contains poor reviews. They are not suggesting that 'Edge' is a living entity capable of its own thought, unless one of the members of U2 or a namesake has decided to take up videogame reviewing. It's like saying the Daily Mirror is poor at entertainment news (it is- they make a large part of it up suhc as when they said that Michael Jackson had put in an excellent performance at the World Music Awards and then the following day, when they had actually been at the show- or seen a tape of it- or heard from someone else- or stole a line from somewhere else- they said how shambolic the performance had been).

As Edge has an editor who can decide which reviews fulfil the Edge 'ethos', if it exists, and can have total control over what is published, it is relatively fair to make a broad statement about Edge as a product on those terms.
