Sony Talks Firmware; PS3 web browser better than IE (Internet Explorer) 7

IGN reports:

"Sony has actually been working on Flash 9 support for quite some time -- as far back as late last year. To get it running on the PS3, Sony ended up customizing a separate Flash implementation that was provided to it by Adobe.

For a sense of how computationally intensive some areas of Flash 9 can be, you need only consider this little bit. According to Takase, the PS3 implementation of Flash-based playback for H.264 videos makes use of an SPU. This allows for loading up of web pages to be separate from video playback, improving framerate.

The entire web experience on the PS3 has been improved with the new firmware update. Noda cited a 2.8 times increase in Javascript speed according to Sony's own benchmarks. Takase believes PS3's Javascript performance, while not up to the level of Google Chrome, beats Internet Explorer 7. "

Yea, it really isn't difficult to beat Internet Explorer, but that's pretty damn good for a gaming console to accomplish! I would have preferred for Sony to work out a deal with Mozilla to get a Firefox-based browser on the PS3, but with the new update the internet works much better than before.

does google chrome still crash with flash? Also Flash 9 is horrible especially on Ubunutu. Flash 10 is a lot better.

I agree. FF and my linux pc work hard with the flash 9 content, compared to FF in XP. Don't know why. Good news for us PS3 users though.

this is old news, anyone who NOTICED that the playstationstore LOADS faster....can tell you that the ps3 got finely tuned with the last update.

Im satisfied with sonys progress with the ps3. I have an original launch system......and i remember when the xmb was plain and everything was slower.

KNOWING this, i would buy a ps4 at launch just like i did with everyother playstation HW.

do you? mine broke down at the beginning of this month. I'm sure you know that our 1 year warranty is done. So know i have to get a job and pay Sony a bit over $200 to get my GT prologue BD out of the ps3. weird thing is my friends 60gb is down too but my other friends' 20gb is fine. LOL he lets me know it at least ones a week.

about you noticing a difference i can't say i saw the same thing mostly do to the fact that i didn't get a chance to updated but partly because it has been a slow proses it's like watching your brother grow up (if you have one) you don't rely notice the growth.

Agreed. What a laugh, the PS3 browser is decent for basic surfing but it is no IE. You can only surf so long before you get an Out of Memory error.

I've heard some doozies from $ony but this ranks up there.

Its like beating a crippled kid in a race. I wanna see firefox on the ps3 though. That, getting java\php blah all the other langauges working so then I would 100% not have to bother with my PC for just bs web browsing.

They took care of whats most important though, having ti work with Youtube is genius, if you have parties or something and somone mentions it.. its right there hehe. (i use a projector) so its big enough for everyone to see.

Hmmm...i dunno, if the issue about running out of memory was addressed every time you have more than 2+ windows open...then maybe....otherwise...I don't think so, it is convenient to use while not running to your PC all the time...but the fact that it has that "Ran out of Memory" problem. It somewhat makes it primitive to use.

Just a quick test you can do yourself. Open up N4G in your PS3 broswer and on the main page click on the small box that lists the latest forum topics and click one. KABOOM!

...like to access www.nicknz.co.nz and the java script does not work correctly. The site is heavy in javascript which is why I'm guessing it does not work as intended through the PS3 browser.

The PS3 browser is not better than IE, in my opinion. The interface is way too clunky for me. Plus it has problems with web scripting languages.

I just watched the new Killzone 2 trailer on my 40" LCD using my PS3's web browser; it's nice having multiple pages open at the same time and being able to zoom in on them as well. Granted, the video wasn't at 720p resolution so it didn't look as great as it could have, but I have the choice of viewing it at its original size instead of blowing it up to the whole screen.

The end result: a more satisfying internet experience on my PS3 than any PC Internet Explorer experience I've ever had, so I couldn't ask for more (although I know Sony will deliver anyway and continue to improve their browser and all their services, free of charge). I'm very impressed with this update, and the PS3 browser sure beats IE for my purposes!

That's true, of course, however Safari is by far the best browser. Safari scores 100/100 on acid3, the definitive test for any browser. Firefox, chrome, and opera all fail miserably. IE, is by far the lowest scoring.
