PlayTV saved files no longer transferable - Sony: HD signals not recordable at launch

Sony has told Eurogamer that PlayTV will not allow saved video files be transferred to PSP, PC, or memory sticks.

Instead, the PS3 telly-recorder will only be able to stream live or recorded content to your PSP using remote play functionality.

Sony Cambridge, the studio making the software for PlayTV, had told us there was no copy protection or time restrictions on the standard format recordings, which could be moved freely onto all manner of storage devices.

I still hope they can bring this to the US though, those out there using a cable card with no cable box could make use of this for the channel guide along with the dvr being an added bonus.

No they can't, as it only has a receiver for DVBT, no way to link the cable to it. And there is no DVBT broadcasting at all in the US = useless box

That doesn't mean they can't release a DVB-C PlayTV for cable (both needed in US and Europe). Or a DVB-T/C for that matter.

Just like all the LCD TV's in Europe only had DVB-T in the begining, but now half of them has both DVB-T and DVB-C.

Well PlayTV only offers you freeview channels, none of which are even in HD for the next few years so I dont see that as a problem.

I've lost nterest in this service long ago. I'm not trying to play Mr. Uptight Buisnessman, but why is Sony funding al of these usless things? Maybe if they focus on their other projects, they won't get delayed as much. Again, I'm not trying to rant too much, but IMO, play tv is a waist of time. But for anyone who likes it, good for them!!

Useless? For one you live in America so as of now this has no bearing on you, two, if you live in a freeview area ie the UK like me this is far from useless. Freeview boxes cost around the same amount (good one) and they dont even allow you to record. Also, I'm stoked by about the ability to watch Live TV at work on my PSP.

Also how does this have anything to do with delays? You think the same team working on PlayTV is making Home, maybe they're juggling it with GOW development? That's like saying if Sony spent less time working on OLED televisions we'd have Killzone now.

This is just one more step towards making the PS3 a fully fledged media hub.

Import? The US doesnt have over the air freeview support, Import all you want but it WONT work in the US, basically it will be a £70 black box. Do you even understand what PlayTV/freeview is all about? Your comments believe me to think not.

Why would you import a huge,expensive paperweight? There is a reason why it is exclusive to the UK.

Its not exclusive to the UK; its the UK and most of Europe, Australia and New Zealand as the common DVB platform is used by all; the PlayTV will be release on the same day in the UK, France Germany, Italy and Spain.

The box absolutely will not work in the USA, Canada or Mexico as they all use the ATSC platform; PlayTV in its current form would only be a small black box with a light. SCEA could make their own PlayTV using a different tuner in the box but with the same software and design so make sure they know you would like one, SCEE have done the donkey work ofgetting it all up and running in the available memory and processor space so a minor hardware change on SCEAs part and they might be onto a winner.

Who do you think is going to have more knowledge of this device?
I was under the impression it would work something like a tivo, but apparently, I'm wrong. I've only read one short article of it. And I haven't bothered researching it because I don't want to bother mashing tv with a game console. I understand you want to get the most out of your investment and truely utilize the multimedia features of this behemoth of a machine, but that doesn't mean you have to go smartass on me. Bob put it in a good, understandable way, which I'd like to thank him for. You, on the other hand, are going way out of your power to try and humiliate me or something. Why don't you calm down? Stuff needs to be transferred to PSP, I thought this was the point. Not buying, I already have hardware capable of doing this on my laptop for £20.

Kinda a disappointment now TBH, I would have liked to transfer to my PSP and watch on the bus in a morning where there is no wifi. I wonder if maybe the decision was due to pressure from broadcasters fearful of an increase in high quality torrents.

I hope they change their mind back soon because the ability to copy files was a major selling point for me, all it needs is the same copy option they have on all music and video files already.

With this in mind, I repeat my call for a mini USB 3g dongle for the PSP to make it online everywhere.

This is only guess work, but if you have a 3G USB dongle, could you use a USB to mini USB converter and it work with the PSP? It's something I've never thought about, but now you've mentioned it, it certainly has me intrigued.

I dunno, maybe its possible but I guess the PSP would need some kind of software hack to make it connect to the net through the USB port. I am sure there are some folks much smarter than myself who could get this to work but lacking a 3G dongle myself means I cannot try (I would get one for this purpose only).

assuming you have the full virgin TV package the only thing you would miss is TV playback on the PSP

To be honest I'm a bit dissapointed with this decision as this was a big selling point for me as I was wanting to save programs to my PSP to watch on long journeys or on my breaks at UNI.

Wouldn't be so bad if the remote play actually worked through my BT Homehub router.
