"With the launch of PS3 firmware update 2.40 on July 2, Sony has officially launched their own gamer reward system to compete with Microsoft's well entrenched Achievement system. Microsoft was the first the out of the gate, and has had two and a half years to refine and improve their product. With this experience under their belt, is Microsoft's Achievement offering better than their rival's Trophy system? Or has the extra time allowed Sony to develop a superior reward system?

If there is one thing we have learned, its that PSN is ever evolving while LIVE is static.

Therefore PSN is superior in the end.

Trophies are merely the beginning. And we have yet to see a game take full advantage of it. Dont worry, when Uncharted trophies and MGS4 trophies come, Ill replay both of these games. Cos they simply worth it.

Meanwhile you can cry and act like as if Xbox 360 still has the upper hand. While you do that, Ill be knowing that movie downloads is coming this summer and HOME in the fall with LBP in November.

What you see here, bots is merely the 2D (thats TWO DEE for you bots) trophies. Home is where the trophy system truly shines in full 3D glory.

My intent was to ignite intelligent debate over the two platform's reward system - not to cause a flame war. I'm not sure if some of the commenters actually read the synopsis, for it clearly states I will be arguing both sides. I think Achievements and Trophies are both unique products and have differing strengths. It's interesting to review the pros and cons of each reward system, and I hope people enjoy the articles.

They are almost the same thing however, I must admit I do like the way you rank up after gaining so may trophies. Again it means nothing in the grand scheme of things but it kind of makes a mini-game out of it.

Now if only both MS and Sony would reward players with something more tangible. That is, convert your hard earned trophies or achievements to points you can use to purchase items off the respective on-line stores. So technically you can record getting that trophy. Home also has nothing to do with the youtube recording. Its completely separate and coming to a firmware update in the near future with titles depending on if the developer wants that option in thier game.

By adding this to games you get a further layer of gaming. Whether heading for a specific award, specific sets, trying to complete them all, get the toughest one or simply getting more than your mates.

You've instantly got much more game to play (if you care).

It starts off uncared for, but as soon as you start building a collection and comparing it to mates there's a nice friendly competition that can take place.

If you don't care for them, don't look.

2nd I can tell this guy has never even seen the trophy system and can tell he does not own a ps3. The online intergration part is the same exact thing on the ps3 you can hold up your friends card and compare your trophies with 1 click. The only thing I can give MS system is that you can access it online anywhere and check out your things. Everything else Sony has.

Achievements are part of the base toolkit that all 360 developers get. It's free, is on all games and can be viewed in comparison to friends or others without costing a gamer a single dime (ie. Silver Live).

No. Sorry that subscription pays for other things such as network infrastructure, XMB from launch and making TruSkill and multiplayer integration/matchmaking part of all 360 development toolkits so that developers don't need to waste valuable resources on developing their own solutions like on other platforms.

You DO NOT have to pay for achievements on xbox live. the only thing you are paying for is the ability to play games online. everything else stills works the same. so you still get achievements even if you only have Live Silver.

Why is it that nobody cares about in-game unlockables anymore? People would rather have a little digital sticker that says "achievement" or "trophy" instead of extra costumes, levels, more bosses, weapons, gear, music, XMB wallpapers/themes, and stuff that you can...I dunno...USE?

I agree mostly with your post but disagree in other aspects. I was never into the whole achievements thing, and so far trophies isn't too different.

However it is only an option if you want to participate in it. It's not like you MUST unlock achievements or trophies to continue the game or anything.

But you also have to look at it in a different way. Sometimes gamers will buy 1 game per month, or even 1 game every 3-6 months. And that's the only game they'll play for awhile. After beating everything the game has to offer, achievements/trophies could be something to extend the value of the game.

Even if it's just some "stamp" or "ego boosting" ploy, to some it's satisfaction. Which is the whole reason of playing video games to begin with, get satisfaction.

So I just think you shouldn't be too quick to point at others just because they like achievements/trophies. But instead just respect them for what they want, and if you hate it then just ignore the option.

I see, but I'm just in the same boat as you. I tried achievements, i couldn't justify myself wasting 3 hours trying to get 10 points to an overall score that does not give me anything else for the game.

I have both consoles but I think the trophy system is better. I mean to actually have the trophy and rank it up in different levels is something new to the table and I like it. The number one reason why I like it more is how it is going to be integrated into Play station home, with the 3-D trophies. TRUE intent with Trophies is HOME. Im glad they put it out first so now all they got to do is link them instead of home releasing and this happens then. I play the game the way I want to play it, and I could care less about trophies or gamer score or what ever. All that matters to me is that I find the game fun, and without having some stupid "score" to look that that I'll only care about for a few minutes.

Games aren't what they used to be. I don't see many(if any) epic hits like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy IX, Mortal Kombat II, Killer Instinct 2, Banjo Kazooie, Metal Gear Solid, Mario Kart, Super Mario 3... Just... classic hits like that.

Nowadays all games are about who has the biggest score, and who is the best at it. Not about how much fun it is. Fighters are about boobs, FPS's are about online competitions, TPS's are turning the same way. Platformers aren't hardly even platformers anymore, it's just get from Point A to Point B, nothing like Mario 64 which I think should be the game all platformers need to be more similar to. Racing games are about how realistic it is or how many different options there are to customize a car. RPG's & JRPG's are all about girly men having feelings for some girl, and on the other side is [insert lame storyline here]. or just about leveling up and being online, and making people pay a monthly fee. It's just complete crap! Sports games are all about adding new features in one year at a time, and still being the same game.

Games suck. This era sucks. Gas prices are high, all the fun things are being outlawed(big, cool fireworks, skateboarding, loud music, being shoeless((I hate wearing shoes and socks)), it's just... nothings fun anymore. When I hear stories from my mom and dad talking about all the things they did in high school and all that, they had cool stuff. I used to play with those little green soldiers when I was a kid, and my dad told me about 10" to 12" tall green soldiers that actually shot stuff, big rockets he could have... all sorts of cool things.

are both good ideas. the overall score doesn't matter though because people can get really easy games and buff the score. however, it's nice to be able to look at your competition before a match, compare games, and see what they've done that you haven't. it lets you know the level of competition you're about to enter.

with that said, the idea did belong to microsoft and it was taken by sony. and there is no "clever twist" with trophies. it's the same concept but if they called it achievement points, microsoft could sue. but i have been referring to my trophies as "achievements."

Trophies will be integrated into Home - whether cheap@ss c*nt developers like capcom and infinity ward choose to retroactively implement them does nothing to the fact that they WILL be in future titles.

PSN is free = instant victory over XBL
PSN has in-game XMB, and XMB>Blades so it's quite simple.

Personally, I own both systems. And I think its great PS3 is finally getting trophies. I know right now it doesn't look all that great. But give it time and a few months and it will be in full force. I disagree. Achievements don't necessarily coincide with unlocking some game content. If you play some PS3 exclusives, like Resistance, for example, you unlock game content without having an achievement or trophy system.

Achievements, and trophies are just like getting the high score in pac man, or frogger. The trophy>achievement article is coming later. With that said, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Obviously, Sony thought achievements were a very good idea. I do too and I'm a PS3 only owner. In fact, so much so, that I will now include it as one of the great concepts that MS has introduced/contributed to the gaming industry.

Achievements/Trophies add an extra incentive for people to buy and play games - yes even those that flop critically/commercially. For us consumers, it not only adds to the replay value of AAA titles, but may give a much needed boost to SP-only games. Even if achievements/trophies don't interest you, it's hard to deny the possible benefits.

With Super Stardust HD, I played the demo and thought it was ok. However, as the only title to implement the newest features of 2.4 at launch, I purchased it. I now LOVE that game and never would've bought if not for the trophies. It ended up a win/win situation for Sony and me.

At the end of the day, if you only own one console, the it shouldn't really matter. If you own both the 360 and the PS3 then this adds longevity to your games in a simple yet enjoyable way. In that respects they're both pretty cool. I personally can't wait for more games to start implementing trophies on the PS3, achievements have always kept me pushing at games and coming back to old ones. They're just a bit of fun.

i don't think copying everyone is sony's problem.their problem is not fully supporting the feature when they implemented into the ps3. look at the sixaxis for example. they copied the wii-mote. and everyone one was like look sony got it's own motion control like the wii but not exactly like the wii. the problem with that is it's not supported in all games. just a hand full of games actually use motion control. the samething is happening with trophies. sony copies achievement with it's own version.
the problem with sony is. instead of them getting all the dev's to agree to patch any older game as well as the new ones to come. sony puts out trophies and now only a handfull of games will only support it. sony asumed that most dev's would go back and patch these games and are now coming to the sad reality that dev's have moved on to other project with no plans of patching the older games.
to me and other this is starting to look like a gimmick on sony's part. just to say to everyone look. we have motion-control and now we have trophies just like the 360 and the wii. but we don't support it in all our games. and this is why i say this is a HALF-ASS attempt to fool the people with sony's "JACK OF ALL TRADES, MASTER OF NONE".

Sony wouldn't wait until all developers knew and agreed that this was coming. MS was smart when it made sure every game had achievements (although early games dont have 1000 i hear but still) but yet Sony is just gonna throw random trophies out there for games? makes no sense to me!
and some of the best games for PS3 arent getting them? seems like they're sticking to Sony. couldnt CoD4 simply have the same trophies as achievements? im no developer / game designer, but if they can make games the way they do, they should be able to insert some trophies for god sakes. but then again, i wouldnt wanna go back and play just an "okay" game or game i havent played in months just to have trophies.

100% of the guys hating on achievements or trophies are ps3 owners in particular since they havent achieved a single thing till date. we have had achievements since the begining just like rumble and expect every game to have it as well as rumble as part of "NEXT GEN" experience.

If you guys dont like it do a petition against it and tell sony u dont want it simple. Just let us enjoy our part and parcel of next gen gaming.

And yeah who ever says its useless hasn't experienced the popup and bell like sound of achievements or is just too lazy to get them. I'm playing BF:BD again on hardest setting just to get the additional achievements, just like i'm trying to do for COD4.
