Rumour: Shenmue III for E3 (omglolwtf)

VG247: Spanish site Meristation's rumouring that the game Sega recently signed an Unreal Engine license extension for is Shenmue III, and that the game will be on show in some form at E3.

Cool, loved Shenmue on the Dreamcast. Hope this is rumour true and the game lives up to it's predecessors.

Should be in for a good E3 in 2008... I'm still trying to wangle getting a ticket.

shenmue one of my favourite games of all time but come unreal engine is soo overused and old now.

why not if on sonys console talk to insomniac or guerilla about licensing their engines which are really impressive uncharted/ killzone and resistance2 come to mind

I think for Shenmue III to be made it would have to outsource some kind of engine. SEGA probably wouldn't allow Yu to tinker with an engine, the game would just rack up the cash far too quickly. If Shenmue III ever got the green light, it would just be to let Yu finish what he started without bankrupting the company again.

Agee with 1.2.... UE3 engine is way overused.

I dislike the engine cuz even though it present very clear textures, everything seems so shiny and plasticy and characters r usually as buff as any WWE or sumthing wrestlers. I don't want to see that in shenmue!

Shenmue's biggest in Japan, as is the Wii so.... But I'm crossing my fingers they decide to go with the big boys.

No sorry, I obviously I don't religiously check sales numbers, I go on personal experience, more of my japanese friends are interested/enjoy Shenmue more than my western friends.

But my claim had NOTHING to do with ethics. I have spent a lot of my life in Asia, I don't type cast.

Shenmue 2 cost 60 million or so to make back in the days(By comparison, KZ2 is 60 million and MGS4 is 100 million). By todays standard its comparable with 120 million.

It didnt even sold 1 million copies and almost banktrupted sega.
Because of this fiasco, shenmue 3 will never come.

Rumors have been floating around since Shenmue 2. I need to see it before I believe it.

I don't think it will ever come out. It didn't make a profit and it cost them a ton of money.

I don't want to get my hopes up because this rumor always pops up around E3 time, but I can't help it. I can only hope it's not another disappointment... Beyond Good and Evil 2 might be a good omen, though.

It's the version of the Unreal engine that Gears 2 uses that they are licensing.

To me the big question is not what engine they will be using, it's wether Yu Suzuki will be producing it or not.

Have to add that I don't believe the rumor is true.

I've been waiting a long time to finish this game considering that Shenmue suppose to be 16 chapters long.

Shenmue can surely be made. When development started on the game originally, it was done for the Sega Saturn console. Both Shenmue I and II were complete on the Saturn. Then development obviously shifted to the Dreamcast. Shenmue cost Sega 70 million dollars to develop yes. But only because Yu Suzuki and AM2 developed both 1 and 2 at the same time. While the game did go to sell over a million copies, every Dreamcast owner would have to buy the game twice for Sega to recoup the profits.

With all of this said, it's still likely that Shenmue III can be made. With the story already written, it wouldnt cost as much for Sega to make this game like it did in the past. Here's hopes to Dark Sniper's favorite game finally reaching a conclusion.

P.S. The unreal engine is clearly not the way to go for this great franchise. As in past games, they should use the modified Virtua Fighter engine. Especially for the combat scenes.

If this game comes out then I would expect it to be on 360 if anything since the Unreal Engeen will not work on the wii and also that Shenmue 2 also came out on the Xbox. If Nintendo gets anything from all this would be the original shenmue that came on dreamcast. I just hope it's not a rumor and I wounder what happen to the canncelled Shenmue online? I always thought Shenmue III, if it ever saw the light of day, would be running on the same engine as the original 2 games.

It wouldn't be that expensive to make these days anyway. At the time yes, but nothing in the game can't be made on a reasonable budget in 2008...

Man I still have a copy of Shenmue for DC in my closet somewhere. Never played the second one since I heard AM2 studios gave up on the third installment since it wasn't financially viable. I agree with some of the comments above regarding the use of blue ray to really expend the universe that is Shenmue. If it's released it'll be likely on 360 unfortunately.

Yah at the end of Shenmue 2.... TO BE CONTINUED.. the story was great, the fighting and jumping around pushing the right buttons was a cool combination of gaming! Just get it done Sega!

I will be quite happy. Shenmue 1 and 2 were some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. They had some kind of magic to them that is hard to explain. Fans and everyone needs this game to come out. If its not true, my heart isn't broken, Sega broke it too many times already.
