Xbox '540' coming in 2009?

TSMC plans to begin producing the Valhalla chip, which will be the foundation of the mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox 360, thus called 'Xbox 2.5' or simply 'Xbox 540' (360+180), in fall of 2009. We learned that this new chip is apparently much more than a die-shrink and end up as a system-on-a-chip design. This change is likely to enable to redesign the Xbox 360 casing and go towards a slim-design, much like what Sony did with the Gen1 and Gen2 PS2. TG Daily believes that TSMC will use a 45 nm process for this Multi-Chip-Module package (CPU+GPU+eDRAM).

Is all you need - the reduction to the 65 nm feature size for both the CPU and GPU (along with the reduced heat) will permanently solve heating problems. I am waiting to pick up a second 360 until that happens (I also want a price cut and a quieter DVD drive). The whole bluray drive thing is interesting - would easily make an Elite module truly elite - but I don't see that happening as MS seems more interested in downloading. Still, if a add-on ever comes out I may pick it up as I still need to get a bluray and I refuse to pay more than $200 for a player - especially when the movies are priced at $25-35.

Lair was 25gb, res 1 was 17gb this one was 23gb and that one was 50gb. If you could read... I asked name one game that has been LONGER or contained ADDITIONAL CONTENT because of Bluray. I've been involved in the MGO beta and so far I'm not impressed. I know it's a beta and I know it's toned down because of it being an online game so I'm not going to trash talk it anymore than saying "not impressed". If I find out that MGS4 has 25gig of HD video taking up the BR disc and not actual textures, music, etc I will be disappointed. If they used uncompressed video and they are saying that it's 1/3 cut scenes the argument for Blu-ray sounds weak.

Anyway, I know I sound already jaded but I am keeping an open mind and if it is something that can't be done on the 360 from a gameplay perspective I will be hear shouting it from the rooftops.

Go buy a 360 now and it will have a Falcon i.e. 65nm CPU, I have had only 1 rrod that was on my launch console within the first few months after that I have NEVER had any issues with rrod or disc scratching or anything.

I know cause it says it on a sticker on the outside of the box. I havent had any problems with it and it is an older one. The only thing Ive noticed is when I turn it on the dvd drive gos "errrrrrrrrrk" and sometimes I can hear it making noises. Falcon was 65nm CPU but still has 90nm GPU. The boards this summer are 65nm CPU and GPU. The Valhalla boards will be 45nm on a single chip enabling them to theoretically shrink the case with a new cooling solution.

One of the major problems in the original launch units was improper ventilation for the GPU, and also it's placement under the CD drive.

Chances are with the die shrink and new placement on the board it wold keep failures within the expected ranges.

Why would Microsoft do a redesign and keep the architecture the same way that would end up costing them even more money for repairs? It doesn't take an engineer to realize the obvious.

Working towards what they can't achieve. 2/3s of more of the Xbox's out there already have the infamous 33% failure rate. Recent statistics brought us to believe that more recent model with the Falcon mobo's those failure rates are around 16% Even with the implementation of Jasper it is too late. At least 1/3 of all Xbox 360's are destined to fail. Even 8, 9 or 10% failure rate is too high. There's no way you can spin this. Microsofts hardware Q&A is a technical nightmare. I'm not hating on the Games Xbox 360 has, but the hardware is below standard.

You could argue all day that they got cut off the problem at the source, that doesn't make it fact.

I dont think a redesign for a slimline model is underway:

1) They will have to somehow rethink their precise cut-Harddrive which are formed to fit original model... unless they keep that the same (although that might look fugly).

2) Faceplates... how on earth would a slim-line work with these things if its half the width.

3) Xbox 360 is already slim enough... It certainly is no PStwo, but it is a far cry from an original Xbox. The width isnt really that big, and its not taking up much room.

It is the darn DVD drive - way too loud. I think that is probably the biggest reason the XBOX 360 hasn't sold well in Japan (the RROD issues didn't help either). If you live in a small apartment place and your console is making a lot of noise then you might just go crazy. My solution is to use headphones - I can crank the volume without waking up the kids and I don't hear the DVD drive.

Most likely a slim model using upgradeable flash drive technology for storage. Perhaps MS will keep the current external hard drives at the same embarrassing high price and then phase in the flash drives at the current price, thus making it look like a good deal?

If they redesign a slim 360, they'd probably redesign the hard drive. Maybe switch it to a solid state, or some sort of vertical drive. They might start producing 2 kinds of hard drives, or they might just release an adapter to plug in new hard drives to old 360s, or design the new 360 with the old hard drive in mind.

There's plenty of ways to work around the hard drive, and they have a whole year to get there.

This really isn't a fanboy issue, although it's fair to question MS hardware after RRoD. An appearance change would be a welcome advantage from a consumer psychological viewpoint. The 360 is paired with the RROD from all but the most casual and uninformed buyers. Just changing internal chips may be helpful, but may not sway people into believing it. Plus, it isn't trivial for someone to know if they have the newer chipset if the outside looks the same. A new redesign would go a long way to giving consumers confidence that the RROD is behind them. That is of course if the problems do go away with the changes. If the problems still persist with a new design after MS has had 3 years to fix it, you could probably start shoveling dirt on that corpse.

The average life cycle of most game consoles is only 5-6 years.

How would keeping with that average hurt games? Personally, having a console go longer is stupid, because regardless of architecture it will look dated compared to PC and even other consoles by then.

Take the PS3. Say the cell is fully capable by normal standards to last 10 years. Even the next year, there should be a newer better Cell chip that will have better performance.

Any technology capable of lasting 10 years with the normal rate of change will just increase the rate of change, and then it will be less powerful.

The Xbox 360 has more racers, rpgs, games for all ages than the PS3 does, the 360 is second out of the 3 consoles and has sold more consoles and has a higher attach rate than that of the PS3. The 360 also has around 8million+ Xbox Live users which is a fantasic all in one intergrated network where you can sign into Xbox.com also and see what your friends are doing and currently playing.

Can you do that with the PS3? NO.

540 suggest it is an upgrade to the consumer, which a hardware revision is not. It is a cost savings measure for MS and has the side effect of running cooler and can be housed in smaller casing i.e. cheaper electronics packaging.

I used to own a 360 and a PS3. I've had both sinch they launched. My 360 got the RROD three times. The third one was a falcon model, so that didn't make a difference for me. After the third RROD, I sold my 360. Now I only own a PS3, and I haven't had a single problem at all. I leave it on all the time too. I haven't shut it off for months(I leave it folding all the time). Don't get me wrong, I want a 360, but I won't put up with the RROD anymore. I'm tired of it. If this fixes it, I'll get one again for Gears 2. Thanks for lisntning, and I'm not a fanboy. I love all the systems, but the 360 personally let me down.

You don't really have to see it to believe it. The smaller chip enables the 360 to run cool. Thus, getting rid of the overheating, which in turn puts an end to RROD(since the motherboard doesn't expand due to heat).

I don't know how to describe it other than this: Think of it like a 360 running as cool and quiet as the PS3.

this is what I've been telling people for about a year now. MS is going to release the new XBOX in 09. They aren't going to tell the public just yet (maybe at E3) because some people might just wait for the next one instead of buying a 360 now. But in 09 the next XBOX will be backward compatable with all 360 games.

dem0n, I'm not sure if you heard but Home is coming in November. It's in closed beta stage but will be opened to the public. I think you ought to be fair with Sony. They are not a software company. They mostly specialize in hardware and it's better for them to take their time rather to rush this all at once. We are not developers or testers so we don't know how long this actually takes. I could imagine this being very hard to do on a complex system as the PS3.

I too, was impatient back in 2007 because I kept hearing about this and was wondering when they were going to bring this out. But now I'm more patient because it's coming.

If MS had taken their time with the 360, it would have been more of a worthy competitor for Sony. I do believe that MS has some excellent software, but their hardware is shaky and quite crippled. I would have to have some kind of an assurance that the RROD issue is completely fixed before I make a decision in buying one of their systems.
