Yea its getting ridiculous at this point. Its really because they are so close that it is hard to get a definitive answer.

Personally i didn't really notice any pop in when both were falling, but i did notice quite a bit of pop in from the 360 helicopter vid.

Personally i think the 360 pop in adds a bit of an edge to the game. When you are driving and tree pops out of no where keeps you on your toes:D

but the fall didn't seem drastic for either...you can see ground texture chaging just before he hits in both...

PS3 has some texture pop up, as does 360 (and any Unreal game on 360) but the XBox in some movies I've seen seems to have bad geometry popup, that is a tree or a whole building pops up.

Too bad I can't find Grand Theft Auto 4 for the PS3 any where in Toronto, Canada. I must have checked like 8 different places. Oddly enough they were all over flowing with the 360 version. I guess some people don't think paying for extra content in half a year makes the 360 version superior...

#1 video- the 360 has some serious pop-in problem, not just the trees, i noticed several boats and a building pop right in if you pay closer attention.

#2 video- the cars on the PS 3 version are clearly visible from a far distance, whereas the 360 version doesn't have that many cars and the framerate doesn't remain constant...

It's not that he is intensionally doing sommersault or what, but he flips several times which I consider as abnormal as far as physics is concerned. I bet that they are trying hard to make this game as fun as possible and that's good but the physics? far from perfect! Tell me where you saw the majority of the pop-in?? I am having a tough time spotting much besides the trees. The angle of descent on the 360 video came over the trees in a way that the color popped in more harshly but the PS3 video they came down straight on top of the trees and the color popped while he was a still good distance away. Both had the pop-in (as has any GTA game prior)

I didn't see any pop-in from the free fall. Even though he landed on a different streets so there was no trees in the 360 version. Also keep in mind that this game has day/night simulation so color palletes will change and makes it tough for straight comparisons. That is why some used the intro instead of gameplay to do the comparison.

Enough with the damage control. Enough Nasim with accusing other people of something you can't seem to be able to pull off without being spotted because you write and act like a child. Enough with grasping at straws to try and prove the PS3 version sold more. Guess what? I don't give a flip which sold more and I am not going to say anything about sales numbers until we get solid Chart Track and NPD numbers. You do not know the software allocations for each store, so your theory that it is sold out on the PS3 and not on the 360 doesn't hold water.

Does it really matter? The GTA games have never had good graphics and GTA4 looks pretty ugly on both consoles from what I've seen. Some of those cut-scenes look PS2ish to me. The GTAs aren't about graphics, they're about characters, good writing, jokes, music, and etc.

I am not sure if I am just getting old, but it is a bit eerie seeing something that looks so life like falling like that. This is the first game that I have actually had a bad feeling about shooting at innocent characters in a game. I would give them props for doing such a good job of mimicing what a real person would do and how they move, but I don't think I will have the stomach to play a game if it gets more and more realistic.

the only thing that bugged me a bit at first about the 360 version was the jaggies, especially during the day they are more noticeable. i really haven't seen much crazy pop in and the framerate hasn't been a problem either. now though, i don't even really notice the jaggies i think because i've had a bit of time in the game world and realized how amazing the experience is...

If you don't like the comparisons videos do us all a favor and avoid it. It's more annoying seeing people complain about their being "another" comparison video almost as much as their being a comparison video to began with.

As for the video, it proves that HDD load is a plus. So, X360 owners should install it if they have the option to do so. Less pop up makes for a better game, and helps avoid those awful crashes on a tree etc.. you didn't see while turning that corner.

I bought the 360 version of the game and for myself I've noticed no pop ins or anything like that. Been playing for about 7.5 hours, ran it through it paces if you will. The point here is we should just enjoy the game, honestly who cares about comparisons? Really now. Are we all 5 years old or something?
I noticed at least on my HDTV that the preset contrast, lighting, etc.. was a bit dark. So ai fooled around with the settings and now it looks even better. I haven't seen the PS3 version of this game personally. But for me I do not care. However I did want to let it be known that I've experienced none of these "pop in" issues on my 360. BTW this is the best GTA hands down. The story is very compelling and gripping so far, one of the best I've seen in a video game in a long time.

EDIT: I thought the optional install on the 360 HDD wasn't true? I have an Elite, but I was never prompted to make such an install, if there is though, would someone mind telling me how to do this? Thanks.

There is no Hard drive install my friend - and its most likely that thats will explain the pop in that people are talking about.

I have to say, though it doesn't spoil the game at all, pop in is very noticeable in the 360 game, which I've been playing for 6 days now. Most of the time its OK, but you can see whole buildings pop in suddenly, or turn a corner fast and suddenly a fire hydrant appears right next to you, or run into a yard and stand for 5 seconds before the grass magically appears at your feet..
For the most part, the game does a good job of predicting which geometry and textures it will need and loading them in before you get there. But if you're moving fast and changing direction rapidly, which the game obviously requires you to do, the DVD data rate can't keep up, and theres a delay while it loads the required data. The PS3 version is the same of course, but with the faster access rate of the hard drive it gets caught out far less often and when it does it loads the data it needs much quicker.
I'm surprised you haven't noticed while playing your game, as it really is quite obvious? But as I say, it really doesn't spoil this amazing title, and its an issue thats present in many games and not limited to just this one.
It's a shame there was no optional HD install as this issue would not be the point of debate and comparison it has become, but this kind of thing was always going to be an issue if you have sku's without Hard drives...

I have played Gta4 360 version/Ps3 version for 2-3 hrs each. My 360 version and my friends Ps3 version.

The only pop up i have seen while driving which occurs on both versions is trees in the distance looking solid but becoming more detailed as you get closer. You can only see this if your are looking into the distance and not the road your actually driving on. I guess when your in a chopper in the air there is more enviroment to process and therefore the lack of hdd install means there is pop up.

But saying that i still find it funny that the pop up is minor even with out an install. The ps3 has a big install and still only manages to be slighty better in the pop up stakes with a decreased resolution.

I have read your comments on the litter of Gta4 threads and ive only heard you say negative things about the 360 version while talking up the Ps3 version. so find it very hard to believe you would go out and buy it. If you are exp these problems then it may be that you have never cleared your hard drive cache.

After trying both versions i have noticed that the colours on the ps3 version are more faded/less vibrant. The frame rate is steady mostly for both but the ps3 version does slow down/stutter when traffic gets heavy.

The Ps3 version also looks blurrier probably due to the the lower res and vaseline filter meaning you cant see some of the edges and details. The 360 version is sharper and more clear.

As for the controls without preference (had a ps2/gc last gen)i find that the 360 triggers feel better and give you more control when driving. Also the 360s analogues feel tighter and more precise in cp to ps3. This makes free aiming harder on the Ps3.

I now know what rockstar meant when they said the ps3 version is "warmer and softer and that the 360 looks more clinical"=Ps3 version is blurrier and colours lack vibrance due to the decrease in res and vaseline filter.

I think Rockstar have tried to do some damage control due to either being loyal to Sony or being payed off. They may of also just been making sure that you harcore Ps3 fans pick up the game instead of going on one of your famous boycotts. Why else would they not tell us the reasons behind the differences in the two games??

I couldn't care less what you believe. Unlike you, I have owned and continue to own all games machines, and have developed games for over 15 years for the largest publishers in the business. Indeed I am credited on previous incarnations of this very title, GTA3 on the xbox, and have worked on 3 different 360 titles in the last year alone. I have no 'drum to bang' and I take my games where I find them.

I can only talk about what I see on the 360 version. as this is the version of the game I have played for 5 days now. Yes I grabbed a retail dump from the net the moment it was available while I wait for a proper copy to be delivered. To deny there is pop up, is to proclaim yourself an ignorant fool. It's in the videos widely available on the net, its widely talked about by all the professional journalists who play it, many other reliable users of this site can confirm it, and most importantly, its right in front of your face for anyone who has actually spent any time properly playing the game. Or are you claiming that everyone else in the world is blind and been bought in some kind of 'mass conspiracy' to make you seem a fool?
Is it any worse than the PS3 version? I can't tell from personal experience as my own PS3 copy has not arrived yet, but accounts from sources I trust would indicate the problem is more noticeable on the 360 - and I certainly wouldn't trust a rabid fan-boy like yourself to convince me the opposite is true.

What are you talking about - 'clearing hard drive cache'? There is no Hard Drive install on the 360 version of the game, as you should know if you genuinely own a copy of the game. If you wish to classify occasional pop in as a problem (and it is present on almost every next gent tile to a greater or lesser extent) - its result of this lack of hard drive that causes it. Thats an absolute fact. Its certainly no worse than some of the extraordinary pop up that occurs in Mass effect, yet that much problem never stopped me enjoying that title either.

As for talking negative about the 360 version - you are again distorting reality, and my posting record is there for all who are interested to examine. I have continually stated that anyone claiming the 360 version is stuttering mess has it totally wrong as its excellent and well worth its rave reviews. Wake up and open your eyes.
I am playing this game solely on 360 at the moment, and loving every second of it. But I'm not stupid enough to deny that it has pop in, I see it in every single gaming session I have had, and if you can't you either have a 'super magic 360' with a dvd data rate far in excess of anyone else's on the planet, or your blind. All that ive written are from what ive seen/played first hand. I never said pop in does not exist i said it is minimal on both versions and when driving(all i have exp so far) this pop in can only be seen in the distance if your looking for it.

The bad pop-in & frame-rate issues on the xbox360 is because of 3 reasons:

1) Tiling: Since GTAIV uses 2 tiles per screen, all the geometry has to be processed twice per frame. This limits the amount of geometry the scene can handle.

2) Bandwidth: Because of tiling and high CPU overhead (AI, gameplay, NPCs, etc) the shared memory bandwidth eats into the amount of data that can be squeezed through to the GPU

3) No standard Hard-drive: Because the Xbox360 comes in non-hard-drive versions, Rockstar could not force the hard-drive install to reduce the chance of the CPU & GPU being starved for data.

Difference between streaming data from DVD and HDD is time. Getting data from DVD is slower than getting it from HDD. Also data in DVD is always compressed and it needs to be decompressed by CPU before usage, but HDD doesn't have similar size limits than DVD, so data can be stored without any compression and CPU and GPU can use it without any delays.

I've been developing games for more than 15 years now, and can guarantee you that the rate of data access IS DEFINITELY what causes the 'pop-in ' effect in this, and other games. Current-gen games now need to stream data off the Storage Media (DVD/ Blu-ray) onto the HDD, which can hold Gigabytes worth of uncompressed data. At the same time, the CPU is also coordinating data off the HDD and into RAM as needed.

Gives a whole new meaning to multi-tasking.

the only pop up i have notice was just bushes and crap like that.. Some buildings to when your looking at the sky line from far away... It doesnt bother me at all but i know if it was a lot worse my eyes would be like wtf!!!! lol.. the bushes popping up take my eyes away from what im doing for like 1 second..

I have the 360 version, I decided on the triggers and more people from work having live than PSN. I have not noticed any pop-in, this game is so huge, and so detailed and I am so busy doing a million things in it, that even if it is their, I still wouldn't know it. This is one of the BEST games I have ever seen, and the fact it looks this good, runs this well and has such minor issues is a technical feat. GIVE IT UP AND JUST PLAY THE GAME!!!!!

The problem we have is that Rockstar are trying to create a game that is as similar as possible on both platforms to maximize their profits. If they had two different teams with no-holds-barred to create the ultimate GTAIV experience they could make, then the PS3 version would be noticeably better and with more features thanks to the larger 25GB-50GB of space they would have available to fit stuff into plus the fact that all PS3 come with a Hard drive as standard. I will be impressed/shocked with the first company that lets their development teams do this.

The falling part, is if u look, the cars appear earlier in the ps3 version, while they appear at the end in the 360 version, just pop in.

Wow the texture pop in on the 360 is VERY noticeable. On both comparisons there is way more pop in. The trees are brutal on the 360 version and silky smooth on the PS3 version. The cop car and some objects also pop in right before you get close to the ground on the 360 version where in the PS3 you can see those objects from a much higher height. Looks like the PS3 version has much more fluid loading.

On the trees subject the ps3 trees looked like blurry breen blobs and the 360 trees looked much clearer and full of fall colors. The two versions were not set at the same time in the video, so that is a poor comparrison. I saw almost no pop in on the fall, and again the location was different on the 2 versions. lame compare.

Shockingly after sitting down with both (HDMI both systems) on the same display the PS3 came ahead the clear winner.

What we noticed:

Framerate: PS3 a smooth constant fps, not 60 frames obviously but good. 360 version not smooth at all, hiccups and inconsistant. Also, just rotate the stick 360 degrees on both, easy to see the PS3 is the champ here.

Textures swapping/ Pop in: PS3 huge advantage as seen in that video.

Resolution.. ok, I couldn't count pixels, but the techies say the 360 has more on websites. However the street signs are clearer on the PS3 version.

Lighting: close but the PS3 seems to shade more naturally. 360 pushes colors too hard.

Sound: pretty much equal. Well the hardware isn't equal as the Elite puts out quite a bit of noise.
