An exclusive interview conducted by gc-navi.jap with a producer who worked on Valkyria for PS3. When asked what he thinks about the game industry he replied:

"Interviewer: Tell us about your take of the future of the game industry..?

Nishino: There is a problem with the platforms .. I feel confused that games like Wii Fit sell.. They aren't games.. I did make some casual titles too.. But really.. Wii Fit and Wii Sports should be the gateway for the nongamers.. But ultimately they should play proper games like Valkyria Chronicles."

to be honest People don't buy PS3 for Blu-Ray, but it was an awful analogy becuase Wii owners aren't real gamers. I would say all my friends liek to game, casually. But the only people I know with a Wii are a family with two young girls and a married couple who work all the time.

Just because it's fun doesn't make it bad, and the first party games are spectacular. The rest of the 3rd party-casual crap I could really do without.

I agree with the general hardcore gamer's disgust with the Wii. I think the Wii is a silly, cheesy, childish, dumbed-down disgrace to gaming. I even hate the name "Wii". I hate saying it, hate writing it, and hate how people who know nothing about gaming say it with ignorant pride.

But you know what? That's just my opinion. I come from a different gaming tradition. I don't admire Mario. I think Smash Brothers is childish and makes people act stupid. But that's just ME.

While I do believe that the Wii is a fad, and I laugh at people who try to measure it up in anyway to the PS3 or 360, we have to give credit where credit is due. If the name of the game is to make money, Nintendo has done that. There's nothing wrong with Nintendo taking advantage of a sector of people that we didn't know would buy a console.

Most of us are threatened by the Wii because we think all of gaming will go to "Wii" standards. We think we will lose our traditional and trusted franchises to the Wii, and see them disgraced. But while this is happening to a few franchises, it won't happen to 99% of them because we hardcore gamers are still a market that must be attended to.

I think it's very prideful and stupid for people to say that Wii games are not games. If anything, Wii games are way more normal than what we hardcore gamers play. If anything, we are the ones that have to make sure we still live in reality. At least the Wii represents games as they are....GAMES...and not an OBSESSION.

But I think it's also stupid to think that the Wii is somehow the new face of gaming. It's a fad. It's bought by people who don't game normally. It's third party games suck and don't sell as a result. The Wii will rise and fall very quickly because of this.

I personally hope the Wii crashes and burns very quickly. But I know that that is the irrational part of me talking, the part that doesn't want the Wii to threaten anything to do with my PS3. :)

I don't think you have to worry about games settling for "wii standards" (which I assume refers to graphics) because that isn't the trend. Look at Gears of War. The game is ok on the 360, but it truly shines on a PC where you have access to full anti-aliasing, and all the graphics goodies you want. So, you can always count on a platform that will support the best graphics possible; just make sure you don't expect that platform to be a console...

and you consider what you do to be an artform, then it would seem natural to want to progress. The Wii, while appealing to large quatities of people with it's controller, is a step back in power. It doesn't give devs the opportunity to go crazy and see what they can accomplish like the 360 and PS3 do. Technology progresses exponentially and with it, so has video games. Why couldn't the Wii progress just a little more too.

Personally Wii Fit should be classed as an interactive fitness simulator. It's not a game by modern terms.

Going crazy is not guarenteed by hardware power. It could go either way, because there are more risks involved with creating beautiful games on the 360/ps3. So in some aspects you might see some poeple take risks and make truely spectacular games but you could also see companies shy away and stick with what works.

As for this guys comments its kinda stupid. Its not like casual gamers are ruining the market they are being brought into the market with hopes that they can be turned into bigger gamers who want to play mroe hardcore games. Will it always work no, is it worth the shot yes. Because even if 1:5 ratio of people that buy the wii can be swayed into bigger gamers then the market has grown.

Plus bringing in casuals further expands the market and expands the gaming industry. Not every movie, cd or book is put out to the same crowed so why should gaming not follow the same way. There are a ton of poeple in the world that could become gamers. Witht he success of the wii theres an oppturnity to expand the market and try and bridge the gap between gamers and non gamers. Sony did this abit in a differnt way with their systems they expanded the market by making games seem cool. So why not be happy that nintendo is expanding the market by making games seem easy and fun?

Though I do agree that Id like to see some mroe hardcore games come out for the wii, but there needs to be companies that take notice when hardcore games do sell on the wii which they do. Not all the time but hey not every game sells on every system.

The only first party title I am interested in is SSBB. And of course all of the old games you can download. I am really upset with the way Nintendo is tackling online. I know the Nintendo is more for kids, but they need to have chat in games.

The reason no other First Party game interests me is that they are all rehashed games that have been released over and over. Either that or they are minigame wiimote things. Even SSBB is sorta rehashed, but it has enough new stuff to excite me to the point of possibly buying one.

Nintendo is using the Wii as the console, that can get anybody to jump on and like something about it. Whether it be Fit games, platformers, rpgs...etc

The thing is, those that are not used to playing video games in general are buying into it because it's simple and mindless fun and all can take part.

What we have to realize, the Wii-Mote makes it possible to deliver all these typed of games on the console, since you don't have to just sit there and play, which I have felt, some non gamers, may have felt that was just, so boring to do..

With the obesity epidemic here in the States, Wii fit is not a bad thing. Parents complain kids do not get enough exercise sitting in front of the TV playing video games all day, now comes Wii fit, which they can throw that argument right back at mom and pops. See I can do both if you buy me this game. Now even mom has a reason to buy the game aswell..

I think people are a bit confused. Are consoles now entertainment multimedia hubs or are they game machines? Or are they both? Many or most would posit that they, in the case of the 360 and PS3 (to a lesser extent, the Wii, as it has some media center properties) are both and that this is a good thing.

If it is, then Consoles have moved out of the realm of packaged games into the realm of software. Of course, in retrospect, this has been happening at least since the ps1. But if dvd's/br's are acceptable in a console (which requires very little to no user interaction) then things like WiiFit are equally valid.

My oft-used analogy about railroads comes to mind here. Railroads thought they were in the railroad business when they were really in the transportation business. This almost killed them. Ironically, the people who deride Nintendo most about media center features (software implementation outside the traditional game realm) also deride them the most for Wiifit (software implementation outside the traditional game realm).

Game consoles differ from movie players in their ability to provide user interaction, yet I actually never realized the hypocrisy of praising a console's ability to play movies while at the same time condemning WiiFit despite the fact that it is a far more interactive experience than simply watching a movie.

I think it'll get worse before it gets better though. There'll always be someone who claims purity when a piece of software that's not in their interests comes along. It's fine to not like it, but you still have to compete. I really doubt that Wiifit is cannibalizing Valkyria Chronicles sales. As such, why would he be sad that someone's buying software that they find interesting/amusing?

Most CC's in parts of the country where people take classes run at least $60 per credit hour. Most also have decent security that won't allow just anyone to walk in for safety reasons, and most (this is the most important part) would cost you more in gas than wiifit in just a few months if you went 3-4 times per week.

I for one am grateful for all that Nintendo has done for the industry, right from the beginning... I love being able to play a game with my girlfriend, my family, and my friends. The Wii brought my girlfriend into gaming, and once in a while (not often but still enough)... she'll play COD4 with me or Resistance... I don't think I would have gotten her to touch a controller were it not for the Wii...

The Wii has brought innovation into gaming... a console shouldn't be just about graphics and power (don't get me wrong, those are great things to have), but should also make developers think differently about games. That way gaming doesn't become stale and repetitive.
The Wii allows developers to be creative and think outside the box in order to come up with a different way to play games...

i don't mind a mini game or 2. but when i system is released with a majority of it's games are mini game motion controlled junk then thats where i draw the line.

i've been playing hardcore games for 15 years and i'm still enjoying them. and i've bought a wii and played wii sport for 2 weeks and i never played it again. in fact the only time i go back tp playing the wii is when a real game is released like mario galaxy. now most of you here thought it was over hyped but i thought it was one of the best mario games ever and it truly was the game of 2007.

I also understand what ur saying... it's true there is a whole lot of crap released on Wii and it's very frustrating... But the PS2 was like that in its lifetime too... so hopefully its just a phase.

There are a lot of good games for Wii that are coming out... and not all of them are nintendo franchises (like boom blox, fatal frame 4, monster hunter III...). But gamers have to support the good games on Wii in order for good games to overshadow the crap...

Oh... I don't think Wii sports was meant to be played everyday... I still play it once in a while with my girl or my family when I go to visit them...

the wii success shifted many games naturally to the wii. and i honestly believe that the system won't do those games justice. take fatal frame for instance. it's the type of game that depends on the overall experience than gameplay skills or reflexes. now just imagine what this game could have been on the ps3.

As for fun, it is definitly not fun to me but the thing is that Wii Fit is exactly what I define is not fun. It's the unfun defined. I don't like Wii Sports but I understand how it's a casual game and fun for some but Wii Fit lacks most of what makes a game fun. The ball guide mini-game wasn't that bad but the rest made me feel worse than studying history.

Yes, they do. As a matter of fact Wii software has been outselling 360 and PS3 software the worldwide charts for the past several months. Here is another fact, there are more 1 million sellers on Wii than the PS3.

Yes it does. Smash Bros, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil UC, Battalion Wars 2, Zelda, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes and on and on.

No it's not. The Wii is for everybody not just casual gamers (hence why the Wii is so succesful). Read the response to number 4.

There is an 360 SKU that is only selling 30 bucks more than the Wii yet the Wii is still outselling it by a wide margin.

Just wishful thinking. Wii haters have been saying since it debuted in fall of 2006. TODAY it is still outselling the 360 and PS3 combined worldwide as it has been for virtually every month since it was released.

You are pulling it out of thin air when you say it will die out soon which makes you look irrational. Otherwise offer some kind analysis which indicates it will.

What do you mean by fad? Do you mean it will be hot for a brief period of time then die out? Well, in that case then every other console that came out was a fad. The Dreamcast, N64, PS1, Xbox etc. were fads. They all were hot then eventually died out.

8) "Motion controls is a gimmick"

Then so are the PS3 controls are a gimmick. And so are the future 360 controls which will have motion controls (if not then I'll eat my hat). And you know they say immitation is the best form of flattery....

9) "The Wii has last gen graphics"

True, but so what? The vast majority of the population doesn't care about fancy graphics. It's usually hardcore gamers, who make up a small demographic, like fancy graphics. If high end graphics were important than the PS1, PS2, GameBoy, and DS wouldn't have dominated.

10) "Third party games suck on the Wii"

Okay, this complaint has at least some validity. Most third party games on the Wii have been ports and shovelware because just like you guys, third parties didn't take the Wii seriously. Now that the Wii has the largest userbase and continues to outsell its competitors, it is expected for third parties to make higher quality games for the Wii. Even UBIsoft stated that they were now going to make Nintendo quality games on the Wii.

I cannot stress it enough, while Nintendo has not been the one to push the Hardware Barrier like other consoles, they are like "C0caroaches", they will survive after Sony and MS nuke each other continuously.

Nice. But I wonder what you would say about the Wiimote and the constant peripherals that keep popping up. Wasn't the Wiimote supposed to be the standard controller? It certainly isn't a gimmick, but it seems Nintendo is cashing in on the "idea" that you "need" these add-on peripherals.

...because every time the thing catches fire you have to:

1. Get behind your cramped home theatre system to unplug all the cables and that takes time and effort. You can get sweaty.

2. Walk to your car with the console, and then walk to the service department once you get there. I mean, what if you park far away from the door? That could mean a long walk! or what if you have to take the bus, or ride your bike?

3. Actually go outside and do something...
