Tokyo (Reuters) - Investors cheered an impending end to a format war for next-generation DVDs on Monday, pushing up shares of both Toshiba, on the verge of abandoning its HD DVD discs, and Sony, the leader of the rival Blu-ray camp.
Toshiba Corp shares jumped 5.1 percent as analysts praised its decision to cut its losses, while Sony Corp, whose technology is set to become the industry standard for the next generation of high-definition home movie DVDs, rose 2.7 percent.
Analysts gave high marks to Toshiba's seemingly quick decision to pull the plug on HD DVD because of the heavy costs involved in promoting the format tat has no growth potential without video software.
Workers at Sega of America, a division of Sega Sammy Holdings Inc., have became the first employees at a major North American video-game company to ratify a union contract, a move that may accelerate a burgeoning labor movement in an industry known for widespread instability among its work force.
The contract, ratified Tuesday, covers around 150 people across marketing and other departments at the division’s offices in Southern California. Workers will receive minimum yearly pay increases of 4% in 2024, 3% in 2025 and 2.5% in 2026 as well as a number of other benefits, Catalina Brennan-Gatica, a representative for the Communications Workers of America, said in an interview.

Worst thing that will happen is it will have a lower stock price and ceos won't get extra millions they don't really need. Other than that the company will continue on and ppl will be treated better.
"Global indie publisher ESDigital Games is thrilled to announce its participation in London Games Festival 2024 from 9th - 20th April at venues across the city." - ESDigital Games.
Christopher Dring has revealed that he spoke to a number of developers at GDC this year that questioned why the PS5 Pro is even happening, with many saying they haven’t even got the most out of the standard version of the console yet.
Exactly
They should have just let developers squeeze as much from the PS5 and then wait for the PS6
By the time developers even get into the PS5 Pro within a couple of years Sony will most likely be sending PS6 dev kits out.
I'm definitely questioning it. Seems entirely unnecessary since there's been no sign of peak optimization by first-party, let alone third. This will just move more focus on more graphics push than fix steady 30fps/60fps modes.
"A couple of companies said this isn’t going to grow the market – it’s not going to move the needle. This generation doesn’t even seem to have got started really, let alone feel the need for a mid-generation update. How about we just get some original, next-generation software up and spinning?"
Ok devs who's fault is that though? The only publisher that came ready was Epic Unreal Engine 5 tech. Sure they were hit and miss with some of their tech in games but they at least brought something new to the table. The consoles released in 2020, you've all had dev kits way before then (2016-2017) to develop new tech, engines innovation. Like y'all have done all other generations. Nope y'all were too busy doing the same stuff staying cross gen and not innovating like before. They should of known Sony would have a Pro console this gen. Devs are lagging behind, take all that money that some of y'all are making from Microtransactions stop being lazy and create innovative new engines and gameplay mechanics. I know it's hard, takes allot money, resources especially time but that's part of being in the industry and a game developer. They should done these things 6 or 7 years ago because it takes so long.
Can't say I feel bad for them tbh.
This is an odd choice just make ps6 in 2026 or 2027 something in those ranges than this
The CPU certainly needed an upgrade, UE 5 titles are going to have a bit of a hard time with that Zen 2 CPU, that's why Robocop has FPS dips.
It's about damn time. Now they can make some money on HD optical media for another 5-10 years that it takes for DD to become widespread.
U gave it ur best and now its time to throw in the towel. U did get a few hits at Sony, but u were ultimitly out performed. Don't worry Toshiba ur still a great company and there will be other format wars in which u can win, but for know the BD won the belt.
For now.
Toshiba stands to loose a lot of money and the share price goes up.
Isn't the stock market funny. Toshibas shares rose higher than Sonys for being a gracious loser. Weird.
Anyway, is there any actual official word on this yet?
all i can say is finally i've been wanting those hd dvd movies on blu ray forever.
