2008: The Year of the PlayStation 3

This is an opinion of DailyGame.net, specifically Jonas Allen, who writes:

There's an old saying in politics that "history is written by the winners." In recent console wars, from "Dreamcast vs. PlayStation" to "Xbox vs. PlayStation 2," Sony got cramps in its hands from writing so much. Whether by failed marketing or poor leadership, Sega couldn't overcome the Sony hurdle, and the original Xbox was picking up steam just as Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360, relegating the Xbox once again to being little more than a Halo adapter for your TV.

With the most-recent console war now in full swing (Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 vs. Wii), it's tempting to think Sony is finally going to be the company written about by someone else (Microsoft and Nintendo). [DailyGame.net] is not making that bet. [DailyGame.net] has taken a long look at the console landscape, and it's clear that this is the year the PS3 takes the reins.

more people adapting to HDTV's. PS3's strong lineup of games this year and prices of next gen consoles going down.

Their brand recognition is making a difference in Pal territories and Japan.

I'm starting to see a lot of the parts fall into place.

nicholascage245921d ago

but no fanboyism this time

keep that in mind

Kain815921d ago

I hope PS-home will released soon.
i cant wait for that, i will collect some Trophies hehee

SSCOOLCHEA5920d ago

It was people perception they were losing , in my mind 07 rock for me 10 games , what more can you ask for in one year.. they want sony to sell 40 million in one year, how is that even humanly possible. we know what the hardware is all about , be patience and you will see results...

deeznuts5920d ago

Uh yeah like MS didn't time on their Xbox Live service? Xbox Live apparently is the standard, which MS set. So you are suggesting Sony match that standard, without wasting their time on it. What planet does this logic derive from?

Oh btw, Sony outsold MS last year, with MS's heavy hitters. Maybe you should dispense advice to MS instead.

mighty_douche5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Every year from now on is the year of the PS3.

Hell, it outsold the 360 last year! The so called year of the 360.

captainjy5920d ago

Before you keep shooting off your mouth about beating the 360 last year, prove it. Give us hard numbers and not BLOG numbers.

mighty_douche5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

^^
VGCharts, the same charts the xbox fanboys used time and time again, but oh, whats this, as soon as the PS3 is top its not reliable.... i take it you missed the like 200 comment thread..

oh and the disagree hurt my feelings... : (

captainjy5920d ago

It's VGChartz and it's crap. Other Xbox fanboys can use them all they want, this one doesn't for the 360 or the PSFree. Even this so-called article, a blog or opinion says that Phony is #3, still.

mighty_douche5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

so where do you get your figures?

Because from where im sitting it sounds like its your ass...

Whats wrong, mummy wont buy you a PS3... ahhhh Christmas will be here before you know it.

It's blatantly obvious that Sony has placed themselves in the prime position for PLAYSTATION® 3 to overthrow XBox 360. Microsoft has made countless amount of mistakes from the moment the console was launched. Fortunately for Sony Snipers, their mistakes have come back to haunt them.

No longer is the consumer uninformed. Consumer awareness for PLAYSTATION® 3's superiority has increased tenfold. Expect Dumpster Juice 360 to officially bow out of the console wars in 2009.

captainjy5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Countless mistakes and the 360 is still beating the PSFree down. Speaking of mistakes, let's talk about them:

Phony is delayed because of Blu-ray
Phony releases at $599
Phony has no AAA titles
PSN is NOT Live, but hey, you have home and can go Trophy hunting! WhooHooo!!!
GTA no longer a one console exclusive
Many titles delayed because of dev problems on that movie machine

I could go on, but that's enough to blacken any console.

mighty_douche5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

"GTA no longer a one console exclusive "

no just the next rockstar games, you know new IP's, thats something a 360 fanboy might not be aware of.

roybatty5920d ago

You are a child. A typical 360 fangirl right to the bone.
'Phony' aaawwwww! Isn't that mature!? Did she think of that one herself?
Oh, and shove your gaming media definition 'AAA' (means nothing) up your dirt pipe.

Loser.

captainjy5920d ago

The next R* games like...???? Yeah, so good that everyone is talking about them. I'll hold you to your name.

heyheyhey5920d ago

captainjy

LA Noire and Red Dead Revolver 2 are R* PS3 exclusives

and believe me- plenty of people are talking about them (gamers that is, not crying fanboys like you)

So, the PS3 is going to do well in 2008?

Wow, this is a completely original thought, and certainly hasn't been stated over and over by anyone who has been paying attention to the gaming world for the past year.

whengeeksgobad5920d ago

I've said it before, but just as a recap since the articles are just as repetetive.

what n4g has become:

1)2008 will be sony's year
2)Blu Ray Winner! or ANOTHER HD-DVD FIRE SALE THE END IS NEAR!
3)HD-DVD Still kicking
4)Game X no longer exclusive!
5)Game X still exclusive after all!
6)Is the WII bubble about to bust?
7)Developer X claims ps3 power completely untapped!
9)Microsoft = teh Dumb?
10) silver/black/pink/red/blue console X headed to US??
11)GERSTMAN-GATE and other crap about gamestop that no one cares about.
12) 2008 is MS's year!

At least I'm getting paid to basically surf - otherwise it may be a complete loss.

Silellak5920d ago

But this one has a shocking twist -

Did you know the PS1 and PS2 were both incredibly successful but the success of the PS3 has been in doubt and 2008/2009 will determine its fate?!

The author of this article is clearly conscious AND able to state the completely obvious!

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing696h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker6h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing696h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos12h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto11h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8811h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies1h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
