PS3 Devil will make you cry with 20 min install time

Devil May Cry 4 is coming to 360 and PS3 this Friday. That's good news mainly for the reason that it's an awesome game. But there's a little issue of a massive installation process that forces all PS3 gamers to wait just under 22 mins before they can tuck in to Dante's finest.

You'd think there'd be a benefit after being forced to install nearly 5GB of game data, like shorter or even no loading times during the entire game. Funny thing is though, it doesn't make much difference to load times compared to the 360 version, that you can play straight away.

The article's tone is biased off the bat. IGN reviewed the game and said that load times were up to 3x's faster on the PS3. I'll take 22 minutes and go piss, make a sandwich, and grab a drink before I sit down to play. For having 3x's shorter in game load times but hey that's just me thinking logical.

I hate nothing more then load times. I am wondering why they don't stream the whole game. That should remove the install time (or at least initial cache) and even get rid of the remaining 2 sec. If the game re-loads that often like the demo does, it is a significant improvement, though.

The 20 minute load time is to get past the PS3's 2x drive. They had to have BR in the PS3 but a 4x or more drive would have put the costs of the PS3 above $1000, which in turn forced them to put a HDD in all skus(which would have been a good move regardless). Hopefully they will come out with a new sku with a faster drive or a mod for current models. I'm pretty sure this isn't going to make anyone sell there PS3 and run out to buy a 360 or vice versa.

CvG has always been flamebait actually. CvG, Gametrailers, and Gamersyde constantly create flame wars with video and screen shot comparisons of each multi-platform game that is released.

As for the "no load times" I'm not going to say that CvG isn't wrong about the lack of any real difference, but I will point out that plenty of other sources say that there -is- a significant difference in between the load times due to the install. It's kind of an "all against them" type of situation really.

Not to mention it's not like you just have to sit and look at a download bar for the 20 minutes or so. It retells the entire DMC series story on the download screens whole your waiting and it has pictures and character bios that appear when its telling the story. Not stuff we didn't already know, but to newcomers it kind of introduces them to the story and it also recaps for us veterans things that we might have forgot.

SO! All in all? the story itself is flamebait and is in no way as bad as the article makes it sound.

Actually martini there is, those control screens that pop up and show you how to do a move are cleverly hidden load screens. Also everytime you walk through a door is a load sequence, hence thats why theres so many damn doors in the demo. Just because a big bar doesnt pop up on the screen and says LOADING doesnt mean its not loading...

Because every PS3 in the world comes with a built-in HDD. I'm sure if the 360 had a built-in HDD in all of they're systems, they could have incorporated a "install" feature on all they're games reducing load times, and caching textures and data.

here's what you need to do....buy the game on ps3 and wait till you absolutely can't hold it much longer(number 2) put the game on and install it and.............run to the bathroom. by the time you're done the game will be ready for you to play

They seem to favor the 360 just the way the way they go about saying things such as their last comment "While we're 'on topic', it's also being reported that (in Japan) the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4 is outselling the 360 game 5-1. -- Buy DMC4 for the PS3.

-- When you get home, put the disk in your PS3 and start downloading the installation file to your hard drive.

-- Next, grab your favorite game magazine and head for the bathroom and take a dump. When you are done with your number 2, you may have a few extra chocolate chips stuck in your butt crack... so it would be a good time for a quick shower.

-- Take your shower, dry off. Throw on some shorts.

that according to most sources, the PS3 load times are like .5-1 second. Three times the number 1 is just 3. Three seconds. Three seconds is hardly anything worth mentioning, and still a lot better than a lot of games. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with either version.

I really hope this does not become a trend... I know many people in this site will not agree (Most are Playstation fans to the death when you see the disagree vs agree against some comments)... but one of the biggest benefits of console games over PC games was always the ability to just insert the game in the console and play... simple as that... though PC was always more powerful and games probably looked better... developers optimized console games to keep this console advantage. What's next for consoles once the next xbox comes with a built in hard drive? All games will require installation? Should we need external hard drives? Imagine those PS3 owners that own a 20GB SKU... people that know nothing now need to learn how to swap hard drives or pay someon to do it for them in order to play nmore than 4 games if they all start requiring at least 5GB of hard drive space?

And it's not about the 20 Minutes.. or only the 5GB... but where does it stop? There are other games more complex than this game... and there are other methods like stream loading or code and textures optimization that developers always had to do to make things happen... but now that Disc holds more data and a hard drive is available.. why bother doing that.. instead of taking the lazy route?

If this trend continue... even the next PSP or DS will require game installation... PC all over again... and if things go through with the One console world... and companies like microsoft, Sony and Nintendo do not subsidize the cost of the hardware and people do... ala PC... what will be the benefit of having a console over a PC?

the downside to blueray, as the disc spins slower it would take age to load games. Its like having a sinclair zx spectrum and it takes up 5gb on the hard drive. thats bad.

Well since the PS3 isn't doing as well, the Sony fanboys will certainly do anything in the power to protect Sony's reputation. If the tables were turned around, I'm sure many Xbox fanboys will do the same.

In my opinion, 20 minutes is a long wait time for a console. We are not talking about a PC here. Imagine waiting 20 minutes before you can watch a new DVD movie. For me the whole point of consoles is, I don't have to fickle with hardware installation or do software installation. The PS3 is turning into a home computer... next thing you know it will crash like a Windows PC.

On the flipside, 20 minute wait time is not terrible considering the lenght of time you will be playing the game. In addition, the benefit of faster load times is beneficial throughout the game time. However, I can see that only a few seconds is shaved off load times because in most cases for me I wait 5-10 seconds for a game to load. With a hard drive I might cut that in half the time and it is negligable since I will still be waiting.

The greates benefit is your console disc drive will not get worn out as fast and that is a huge plus! Still 20 minutes, how much data are they moving over or is it the number of files that has to be written and merged into the drive...?

Dont get me wrong Ill soon get a PS3, but not many games for it if I have to install them. Any way you cut it, PS3 gamers are going to have to wait to play their games. Either it's a multiplatform game, that shows up 3-6 months after the 360 version, or a 20 minute wait after you buy it, because Blu-Ray is for MOVIES, not GAMES. Game installation is for the rapidly-dying PC market...NOT consoles. :o
Maybe Capcom thought they would win back some of the PS3 fans...whom they'd dissed so badly,by dropping the PS3 exclusivity...by shaving mere seconds off of load times. I guess some of these consoles realy are PC's when it comes to installing data onto the HD. The PS3's 80gb would be 50-60gb, just by installing data for 10 games. "Blu-Ray is needed for games" apprantly so is a hard drive and that goes for the 360 aswell. Wow! and I thought juggling 20gb was bad before I got my 120. Terabyte anyone? you only install once right. clutch much. whats the big deal. my only gripe is that you cant install in the background and thats it. Having a standard hdd should not be seen or portrayed as some type of disadvantage because it clearly isn't. And to bladestar, who on one side will love the 360 for being so similar to the pc but worried about the ps3 for having similar features, you're shows how out of touch he is with the current gen on this instance. Maybe we should of stuck with cartridges. hdd's have made games better on the ps3 and will do so on the 360 when MS finally opens the door to devs to create games that need the hdd. I praise some of the features consoles inherited from the PC... like Online play, voice chat, patch updates, digital distribution, hell even mods if done right.. and the ability to download new maps, etc... but not PC weakness... Let me guess... would you like consoles to take as much as a Server to boot? imagine having to wait 10-15 minutes before you get to start any game? Well installing games is the same... if you had the choice to install a game before playing it on the PC or any console... or not.. you would?
Would you rather Sony to make the Blu-ray player on the PS3 3 times faster in order not to use the hard drive to improve loading or you would like to use the hard drive? Let's not mix thing up here should we... let's not make installing games into a hard drive before playing it a great feature... it's a work around... do you know what work arounds are?... this game is relatively small.. fits in 1-2 DVD 9 and it requires 5GB on the PS3 version of hard drive space... now when as PS3 fans say, "Developer will soon take advantage of the power of the PS3 and blu-ray"... and games are 50GB of space or more... imagine having to install 30GB of data into your hard drive... what will that be 1-2 hours? also, forcing people with 20GB hard drives to replace their hard drives before being able to play the game? or wait.. they can't do that.. developers will have to let people deal with slow loading times...

Also, kind interesting that this game is less than 9GB and more than have needs to be install in the hard drive... why not just let people install the whole game? then at least it would be an advantage over many PC games... though many PC games let you install the entire game...

it seems this will be the trend for Games on the PS3 and the xbox 360... PS3 gamers will have to wait 20-30 mins.. up to 1 hours for huge games before they can start the game... Require a large hard drive.. specially thouse with 20GB-60GB if they have multiple games.

Xbox 360 gamers will get games in multiple disc.. be able to play without installing the game first... after playing the game for 10-15 hours be asked to insert next disc and be ready to go within 10-15 seconds...

mabe for 5 sec if your fat but how many times do you change games while playing through another. Me I change games all the time or cds or dvds and for you, blue ray. If I had to choose between swaping a disk once or twice or even 5 times id rather do that than have to instal a game before playing it. The install should be optiona as it wont allow the devs to become lazy. I hear uncharted doesnt laod much and that is a pretty game. Dmc is the same as previous ones but now in HD. whiy does it have to load so much. I switched disks for resident evil 2, mgs, and FF7. If I recall the time it took me to switch disks for all those games it is probaly under a min. There are huge games that only require a 15-20 second load at the begining and then there is a huge open area for you to explore. Im thinking of Crackdown(GTA where yo uare a supersoldier law enforcer who jumps over buildings) and uncharted mabe(never played it).

This does not bother me really you can just go off and do something while the game installs. I expect the same situation with the Playstation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV considering how big the game will be with no loading times. It has been said that Grand Theft Auto IV would have a lengthly loading process (same with the XBOX 360 version as well I bet).

Crackdown was a huge city taht was completley loaded with one semi lengthy load at the begining, and you could go anywhare after that. I Really prefer this type of loading and think its much beter than littler loads all over the place. Im sure Rockstar knows how to handle this as they almost achieved this with vice city on ps2 without a harddrive. These guys know how to take care of loading times/placement.

I agree that the only issue with this install is not the time it takes to do it but for those people who bought the 20gb and the space the game takes up. 5gb is a 1/4 of your total space (a little more after the PS3 OS has taken up it's own space) that is pretty hefty.

as HALO-32 says though, you can uninstall or move stuff (if you have the equipment) 20gb today though is a very small HD and for anyone who is looking to store demos, music, video and keep their PS3 game install files together a bigger hard drive is a must.

To a lot of people I know, their PS3 is the hub of their entertainment system and so a bigger HD is a must and it's a blessing that Sony has made it so easy to do.

I have a 60gb and the DMC install will leave me with 25gb left and I have all the games I've ever bought and a whole host of demos and videos installed. I still want to upgrade into the realms of 250gb+ but for now the 60gb is keeping me going.

Who are these people who keep video and music *on their console*? Like most people, that stuff comes from the internet -- if it didnt, you'd have bought a disc.

On second thought 5GB is a lot actually to install one game. I have the 60GB Playstation 3 but that will still take up a lot of memory. I tend to delete any demos when I am done with them anyway because they can take up space quickly and I see no reason to save lot's of trailers and such on the hardrive when you can easily view them on the internet.

I agree with some of the points raised here. When i first bought a console it was a joy compared to the PC, no upgrades, no ram issues ect. No fiddling with Autoexec.bat or Config.sys file optimizing, min max setting for ur graphics snd ect. You jus bought and played.

I bought my PS3 a mnth ago and 1 of the first things i noticed was the dld of demos and install feature, which i found irritating to start of with. I have got used to it, i dont like it but i got used to it. Wot im not liking is the upgrade thing.

Upgrading is wot u do on a PC, if, like others have said, its going to be a 5-10gig install on future games then im goin to struggle for space. I absolutely refuse to upgrade a console, and that goes for my 360. Ive managed with my 20gig hdd on my 360 for 2yrs, and i like replaying certain games, boxing, beat-em-ups, racers or 1s i didnt finish not to mention the games i keep solely for multiplay. This will not be poss if this trend continues and goes to the 360.

If this is the case then both Sony and MS r turning the console into a PC and using there systems as the 1 stop for ur media content. Sony alrdy incorporates a browser into there PS3. In future if u want certain things u will need to upgrade to get them. Bigger hard drive to play more games snds like the start of it to me.

...to say that this has nothing to do with the Playstation hardware is not entirely accurate. The reason that they're doing this is to ease up on the amount of reading that the Blu-Ray player needs to do. The Blu-Ray player (now I'm not sure why this is) has a access/read time. I'm not sure if this is because of the size of the discs or the way they built it. It just is. I have a theory that the laser shuttle might be geared differently to be more accurate as the system has to deal with more data.
Bethesda got around the read issue by placing multiple copies of the textures in multiple locations on the disc. This way they could have quicker access to them depending on what point of the game you were at. It's possible that other games, like Uncharted and Lair do the same thing.
So basically the Blu-Ray drive can store more data but it also takes a bit longer to access said data. I guess it's a matter of balancing what's possible.

I'm not bothered about a 20 minute install but it should be optional and it should eliminate loading times, knocking a couple of seconds off a 7 second loading time is worthless. I like a lot of people am concerned that consoles are going down the PC route, 5gb might not be much for some people but if you've got a 20gb PS3, then that's 25%. Add this to the £10 more for PS3 game in Europe and i'm thinking i would've been better off ordering it on the 360.

I do not have a ps3 yet. I will get one when tax $$ comes in. I am curious as to if all ps3 games require some form of installation to the hdd? Why would a multi game like DMC4 be subjected to installation where as the dvd version on the 360 doesnt? Is it have to do with the (rumored) slow read time on the bluray drive? Would it be different if the game were on a dvd for ps3 instead of bluray?

Are load times affected because of this and has someone confirmed if the same section of the game loads longer on the 360 than the ps3? It is my assumption that not every game for ps3 takes full advantage of the capacity of the bluray format (multi plat games for example)so why do all games come on the format? Sony should have dvd games where applicable if it makes loading easier. Just a thought.

BD-ROM IS slow. At least the PS3 drive for that matter. DVD-ROM is several times faster when it comes to data transfer.

Yes, PS3 games allow you (and sometimes require you) to install them to cut down on load times.

Yes, the BluRay drive was not incorporated to benefit games, but to watch and sell HD movies.

I find it a little ironic that Sony bragged about all the storage space on the BD-ROM, and now, due to it's limitations, they have to suck up more of the hard drive space as well.

As a final note, I'd like to add that many copies of PS3 games go out on DVD-ROM before release, like to reviewers and such. Sony pushes developers and requires any retail game to ship as a BD-ROM in order to sell the format even though it's more expensive and often times performs worse than DVD-ROM.

...that a one time 20 minute wait is not even worth complaining about (though if it happened everytime you put in the game it would be inexcusable), its surely avoidable at this point. Games like Uncharted have proven that to me in spades. Uncharted has NO install, a 15 second loading time at the beginning of a session, and then not one single loading time for the rest of the game. i find it hard to believe that there is SOOOO much more going on in DMC4 that it warrants a 5gb install. Naughty Dog obviously has an intimacy with the PS3 that Capcom (and almost every other developer, save Insomniac, and Infinity Ward) hasn't had time to cultivate. Developers will eventually learn little tricks to make thing like load times and installs occur with less and less inteference to your gaming experience.

Its a situation where I think they got lazy in the end by making it multiplat personally. No I am not saying it was PS3's OR X360's fault but the developer's. Different companies are going to take different approaches when they multiplat 2 systems that are pretty different. Everyone knew BD-ROM was much slower than DVD-ROM, that's why you even have the options to install games on the PS3, and that's why Sony really pushed for decent sized hard drives.

Another reason why a DVD-ROM would have been a better choice, but I guess you can't argue that if you enjoy the BluRay movies.

Disc speed is only one factor in videogame loading times; the other factors are how efficiently the code is written, as well as how much of the hardware is being utilized to process that code.

For example, 360 code runs horrifically slow on Cell because it's entirely PowerPC-based, which means only one PowerPC core in Cell is being utilized, and also does about twice the work that Cell needs to do to load the same data since the SPUs have their own Local Storage. Cell actually loads and processes data off a disc or hard drive much faster than traditional processers, but only if the code is written specifically for Cell's SPUs.

This is the reason so many PS3 exclusives have high visual fidelity, as well as almost nonexistent loading times; the SPUs are simply being put to good use. Again, depends on the developer's experience. You'll either get 45 second load times (Motorstorm) or no loading at all (Uncharted). Expect loading times to continue to decrease on the PS3 though since so much technology is being shared across 1st party devs for that platform.

Load times are not really inherent to the hardware. Games like Uncharted don't have load times because the developer is able to reasonably predict where the player is going to go next, so it reads ahead in anticipation of that. Games like Motorstorm have load times because a large amount of data needs to be front-loaded for each track based on whether you lose a race or advance to the next track or whatever. It's been this way since the PS2. GTA III only had loading screens when you changed boroughs. Crackdown never seems to load. It doesn't really have anything to do with the platform.

And 360 code wouldn't be run directly on the Cell. That's not how it works. The compiler should be optimizing code for the target architecture.

Actually this is totally wrong. The limiting factor in loading anything from storage media is the media itself, unless the CPU is way, WAY slower than a modern processor. Any modern processor is going to be sitting there tapping its foot waiting for hard drive data...hard drives are *extremely slow* compared to how fast CPUs can process data.

The limiting factor in a PS3 loading scheme is the hard drive speed and how the developer programs their game to load, *NOT* the speed of the Cell architecture.

Blu-ray discs are read at Constant Bit Rate (CBR) no matter where the data is placed on the disc, and no matter how many layers are on the disc.

DVD discs are read at Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and whatever speed the drive is said to be capable of reading is just the Theoretical drive speed. This is an interesting fact since only the outer rim of a DVD disc is ever read at peak Theoretical speed; the speed drops down considerably the closer data is written towards the center of the disc. In addition to this, Dual-Layer DVDs (that means almost every 360 title in existence) are read at only 70% the speed of Single-Layer DVDs.

You'll now note that I said "On Average, 2x Blu-ray is faster than 12x DVD", and thus made the error of not specifying that I was comparing Dual-layer speeds. The fact that I am comparing average, and not theoretical peak speeds, essentially proves that I'm correct.

First, what evidence do you have that the X360's optical reads dual layer at only 70% of DVD-ROM? Link please. Differing optical drives have differeing performance, both on DVDROM and DVD-DL discs, so to bluntly claim only a 70% read speed of normal DVDROM would be a total guess unless you provide a nice link to a reputable source.

And yes, you do make a good point, the PS3 is a CLV drive whereas the 360's is CAV, so that's something to take into consideration.

Even PSM, who LOVES Devil May Cry...couldn't give DMC3 a 10/10. That made me SO MAD!!!

They gave it to God of War...which was a great game. It just didn't have the storyline or combo-system that DMC3 had.

With PS3 version, I needed to wait a few seconds between movies, but 0 seconds between doors. So, I think the installation really works great for PS3. Especially, compared to an old demo movie. The old DMC4 demo movie showed a few seconds loading for all doors. It seemed not like fun for me. Now, although with 20 min installation time, there is no loading time for all doors.

I don't own 360, so I don't know the experience on it.

Anyway, DMC4 is fun game. Good to play. Just buy one and play it on your favorite console. :)

Is the blu-ray drive that slow? Maybe. This is an issue I dislike about my ps3 and thats installing a game. Drake's Fortune took at least 15 mins to install etc. also and on top of that when I download a demo off PSN it has to install. Give me the choice to install DMC4 or have longer load times.

Two seconds shaved off of every load sounds pretty significant to me...

When you're playing a game, two seconds of downtime is an eternity. I mean, the load screens in Oblivion were extremely painful to me but they only took about three to five seconds.

Twenty minutes is pretty long, but to do that once and then be able to better enjoy the entire game is worth it in my opinion. You have to ask yourself honestly: if it was optional on either system, would you do it? Personally, I would. I'm not surprised that forcing a twenty minute install on everyone whether they want it or not has caused a bit of irritability though.

If I have a 40 gig PS3 and I own this game Oblivion and Burnout Paradise, that's almost 15 gigs of space on just three games. Now say more games come out that have to be preinstalled, I'm going to have to either get a bigger harddrive or delete some other game that has been preinstalled and later on if I want to play that game I deleted earlier I'm going to have to preinstall the game again.
